Аннотация: MOX-fuel production and spent nuclear fuel reprocessing started recently at the Mining-and-Chemical Combine (MCC, Zheleznogorsk, Russia) have caused an increase in controlled releases of plutonium to the Yenisei River. In this study, we analyzed time-dependent trends of plutonium (239,240Pu and 238Pu) in biota and bottom sediments of the Yenisei during 2008-2019, to estimate comparatively the potential of abundant representatives of biota as bio-monitors of contamination of the Yenisei by plutonium. Gamma-emitting radionuclides (40 K; 60Co; 137Cs; 152Eu; 241Am) were measured in environmental samples of the Yenisei as well. Samples of bottom sediments, water moss (Fontinalis antipyretica), shining pondweed (Potamogeton lucens), caddisfly larvae with casings (Apatania crymophila), and amphipods (Eulimnogammarus viridis and Palaseopsis cancelloides) were collected downstream and upstream of the radioactive discharge site. Environmental samples of the Yenisei collected downstream of the radioactive discharge site differed considerably in activity concentrations of plutonium but were similar in time-dependent trends of plutonium, reflecting the trends of annual discharges of plutonium. In 2018, the year of a sharp increase in controlled discharge of plutonium, the concentration of 239,240Pu in water moss (26 Bq kg-1 d.w.) was higher than in sediments (14 Bq kg-1 d.w.). In other years, the highest activity concentration of 2391,240Pu was observed in bottom sediments. In view of the higher magnitude of increase in plutonium concentration, water moss and shining pondweed can be considered as more sensitive indicators of increased fresh releases of plutonium than bottom sediments. Taking into account the food-related mechanism of plutonium uptake by amphipods, this representative of biota can be regarded as a sensitive monitor of bioavailable plutonium in the Yenisei.

Аннотация: The source of radioactive contamination of the Yenisei River floodplain, including contamination with transuranic elements, is the Mining-and-Chemical Combine of the Russian Ministry of Atomic Energy, which has for many years been producing weapons-grade plutonium. Transuranic elements have been detected not only in the soil and sediment of the river but also in the biomass of aquatic plants. This work is an investigation of accumulation and release of 241Am by a submerged macrophyte of the Yenisei River (Elodea canadensis) in laboratory experiments. In 2000-2003, laboratory experiments were carried out with biomass of E. canadensis Mich. and filtered river water. The samples were collected from the Yenisei River upstream of the discharge of the Combine's radioactive effluent. The experiments showed that 241Am is accumulated by Elodea biomass: the activity concentration of 241Am can reach 3280 В± 240 Bq/g, with the concentration factor for 241Am 16 600 В± 2200 l/kg. Results of chemical fractionation have proved that in the course of 241Am accumulation by Elodea biomass, 241Am tightly bound to biomass increases from 11% to 27% of the total 241Am in the biomass. Release of 241Am from the decaying Elodea biomass has been evaluated experimentally. By the end of the experiment (lasting up to 127 days), the Elodea plants had lost up to 65% of their initial 241Am activity and the rate of 241Am release into the water environment reached 23 Bq/day. Аннотация: The study addresses 99Tc accumulation and release by Elodea canadensis, one of the abundant species of submerged plants in the Yenisei River. 99Tc in water samples of the "Elodea - Yenisei River water" model system and in the biomass fractions was measured using a liquid scintillation analyzer. Experiments on accumulation of 99Tc by Elodea showed that 99Tc activity concentration can reach 120В±6 Bq/g dry wt, with the concentration factor for 99Tc 2700В±500 l/kg dry wt. In experiments on 99Tc release, over 504 hours about 82% of the total 99Tc activity was released into the water from the plant; most of 99Tc was released within the first 192 hours. The data obtained using sequential chemical fractionation of biomass confirmed the experimental data on 99Tc release, which suggested that most of the biomass-bound 99Tc was adsorbed on the surface of Elodea. 99Tc tightly bound to biomass (fractions of organics and mineral residue) constituted just 17% of the total 99Tc activity. Аннотация: The study addresses 242Pu accumulation by Elodea canadensis, one of the abundant species of submerged plants in the Yenisei River. 242Pu in water samples of the "Elodea - Yenisei River water" model system and in the biomass fractions was determined ?-spectrometrically, following radiochemical recovery of 242Pu using 236Pu - a chemical yield tracer. The experiments on accumulation of 242Pu by Elodea biomass showed that the activity concentration of 242Pu can reach 21 В± 2 Bq/g dry wt, with the concentration factor for 242Pu 13100 В± 2100 L/kg dry wt. Results of chemical fractionation proved that during the first few hours of the experiment 242Pu contained in Elodea was mainly concentrated in the exchangeable and the adsorbed fractions of biomass (about 100%). As Elodea biomass accumulated 242Pu, the absolute amount of 242Pu in the exchangeable and the adsorbed fractions remained almost unchanged, although the portion of 242Pu tightly bound to biomass increased. At the end of the experiment, on day 7, 242Pu tightly bound to biomass (fractions of organics and mineral residue) constituted 43-63% (in different experiments) of the total 242Pu in the biomass. Аннотация: The lab experiments showed that specific activity of 241Am achieves 3280В±240 Bc/g with 241Am accumulation coefficient = 16600В±2200 l/kg. The chemical fractionation results confirmed that 241Am can be strongly fixed by elodea biomass. At the end of long-term experiment the part of 241Am strongly bonded by the biomass reached 27% of total 241Am content in biomass. The accumulation process proceeds with 241Am redistribution towards decreasing of the part of exchange and adsorbed fractions and increasing of the part of organic and mineral fractions. Thus, the 241Am part in organic fractions doubled during the experiment and in mineral fraction - grew more than 10 times as compared with initial 241Am distribution.

    Bioavailability of 99Tc to a macrophyte of the Yenisei River / L. Bondareva, A. Bolsunovsky // Radioprotection. - 2009. - Vol. 44, Is. 5. - P71-76, DOI 10.1051/radiopro/20095019 . - ISSN 0033-8451
Аннотация: The experiments on accumulation of 99Tc by Elodea biomass showed that 99Tc activity concentration can reach 120 В± 6Bq/g, with the concentration factor for 99Tc 2700 В± 500 L/kg. In experiments on 99Tc release, over 504 h about 82% of the total 99Tc activity was released into the water from plant biomass; most of 99Tc was released within the first 192 h. Results of chemical fractionation of the biomass show that 99Tc contained in biomass was mainly concentrated in the exchangeable and the adsorbed fractions (83%). Thus, the data obtained using chemical fractionation of biomass confirmed the experimental data on 99Tc release, which suggested that most of the biomass-bound 99Tc was adsorbed on the biomass surface. 99Tc tightly bound to Elodea biomass (fractions of organics and mineral residue) constituted just 17% of the total 99Tc activity. Decreased illumination of Elodea shoots during the experiment did not cause any reduction in 99Tc activity concentration or concentration factor. Results of chemical fractionation of the biomass grown under lower illumination conditions show that the percentage of 99Tc tightly bound to Elodea biomass (fractions of organics and mineral residue) decreased while the 99Tc of the adsorbed fractions decreased. Our results and data reported by other authors suggest that some part of 99Tc activity can be bioavailable to living organisms and that the portion of bioavailable 99Tc can be determined by a number of factors. Аннотация: Accumulation of americium ( 241Am) and plutonium ( 238,242Pu) and their distribution in cell compartments and biochemical components of the biomass of freshwater aquatic plants Elodea canadensis, Ceratophyllum demersum and Myrioplyllum spicatum and aquatic moss Fontinalis antipyretica have been investigated in laboratory experiments. Americium and plutonium taken up from water by Elodea canadensis apical shoots were mainly absorbed by structural components of plant cells (90% for 241Am; 89% for 238Pu and 82-87% for 242Pu). About 10-18% of isotope activity was recorded in the cytosol fraction. The major concentration (76-92%) of americium was bound to cell wall cellulose-like polysaccharides of Elodea canadensis, Myriophyllum spicatum, Ceratophyllum demersum and Fontinalis antipyretica, 8-24% of americium activity was registered in the fraction of proteins and carbohydrates, and just a minor concentration (<1%) in the lipid fraction. The distribution of plutonium in the biomass fractions of Elodea was similar to that of americium. Hence, americium and plutonium had the highest affinity to cellulose-like polysaccharides of cell walls of freshwater submerged macrophytes. В© 2011 Akademiai Kiado, Budapest, Hungary.

Аннотация: Submersed freshwater macrophytes are considered as relevant indicators for use in bulk bottom sediment contact tests. The purpose of this study was to estimate the validity of endpoints of aquatic plant Elodea canadensis for laboratory genotoxicity testing of natural bottom sediments. The inherent level of chromosome abnormalities (on artificial sediments) in roots of E. canadensis under laboratory conditions was lower than the percentage of abnormal cells in bulk sediments from the Yenisei River. The percentage of abnormal cells in roots of E. canadensis was more sensitive to the presence of genotoxic agents in laboratory contact tests than in the natural population of the plant. The spectra of chromosomal abnormalities that occur in roots of E. canadensis under natural conditions in the Yenisei River and in laboratory contact tests on the bulk bottom sediments from the Yenisei River were similar. Hence, chromosome abnormalities in roots of E. canadensis can be used as a relevant and sensitive genotoxicity endpoint in bottom sediment-contact tests. © 2015 Elsevier Inc.

Аннотация: A submerged macrophyte of the Yenisei River, Elodea canadensis, was used to study the microdistribution of the artificial radionuclide 241Am among different components of the plant. The total amount of 241Am added to the experimental system was 1850 В± 31 Bq/L. The total amount of 241Am accumulated by the plants was 182 Bq per sample, or 758,333 В± 385 Bq/kg dry mass. It has been found that the major portion of 241Am accumulated by E. canadensis, up to 85%, was bound to solid components of the cells. It is observed that the microdistribution of 241Am within different components of the submerged plant E. canadensis was not uniform. 241Am distribution vary depending on the age of the leaf blades, the state of the cells and morphological features of the plant stem. Аннотация: The distribution of the resting stages of blue-green algae (akinetes) in bottom sediments of the littoral of a small Siberian water reservoir has been studied. The irregularity (mosaicism) of the distribution of akinetes in the bottom sediments of the littoral has been demonstrated and the possible mechanisms of its formation have been analyzed. Аннотация: Recruitment of pelagic populations of cyanobacteria from littoral bottom sediments is assumed to be one of the key factors for the development of harmful blooms. Therefore, it is necessary to obtain more information on the possible factors influencing the spatial distribution of the resting stages in littoral bottom sediments. To test the hypothesis that akinete abundances in littoral bottom sediments are associated with silt and the presence of higher water plants, we sampled spatial and vertical distribution and seasonal dynamics of akinetes of cyanobacterium Anabaena flos-aquae in a small Siberian reservoir. We found that akinetes accumulate in silt at stations located in macrophyte beds. Two experiments were carried out to test if there is relationship between size of inoculum and size of the pelagic population of A. flos-aquae. The proportion of A. flos-aquae in total phytoplankton biomass depended on the initial abundance of akinetes in bottom sediments. The model based on laboratory experiments gave good qualitative description of the field data. These findings can be useful to predict the location of the main akinete accumulation zones in a water body and plan the removal of sediment to prevent the cyanobacterial blooms. В© CSIRO 2011.

Аннотация: We estimated the seston elemental composition (C, N, P) and its ratio in pelagic and littoral zones of mesotrophic shallow Lake Obsterno during two contrasting seasons, as well as the influence of macrophyte beds on the seston stoichiometry. In the both pelagial and littoral zones in summer the C : N ratio was small, 4.62 and 7.05 respectively. But it increased slightly during autumn to 5.66 in pelagic samples against 8.33 in littoral ones. The large N : P ratio and the small phosphorus content specially in the macrophyte covered littoral zone equal to 57.7 in July against 22.47 in September suggest a high level of phosphorus limitation in the littoral locations as a possible mediated reason suppressing zooplankton abundance in summer. Our results in the both pelagial and littoral habitat showed a highly P limited situation in which the N : P ratio was larger in littoral with macrophyte than in pelagial zones. The obtained data of littoral seston stoichiometry were recorded for the first time and exceeded the classical Redfield ratio. The elemental imbalance between macrophyte covered littoral and pelagial suggest that nutrients, especially P, are more limiting in macrophyte beds in summer due to the resource competition between phytoplankton and macrophytes for nutrients, a poor food quality, low zooplankton abundance, as well as its poor taxon-specific elemental ratio in summer.
