Аннотация: A feature of meromictic lakes is that several physicochemical and biological gradients affect the vertical distribution of different organisms. The vertical stratification of physical, chemical and biological components in saline, fishless meromictic lakes Shira and Shunet (Siberia, Russia) is quite different mainly because both mean depth and maximum depth of lakes differ as well as their salinity levels differ. The chemocline of the Lake Shira, as in many meromictic lakes, is inhabited by bacterial community consisting of purple sulphur and heterotrophic bacteria. As the depth of the chemocline is variable, the bacterial community does not attain high densities. The mixolimnion in Lake Shira, which is thermally stratified in summer, also creates different habitat for various species. The distribution of phytoplankton is non-uniform with its biomass peak in the metalimnion. The distribution of zooplankton is also heterogeneous with rotifers and juvenile copepods inhabiting the warmer epilimnion and older copepods found in the cold but oxic hypolimnion. The amphipod Gammarus lacustris which can be assigned to the higher trophic link in the fishless lake's ecosystem, such as Lake Shira, is also distributed non-uniformly, with its peak density generally observed in the thermocline region. The chemocline in Lake Shunet is located at the depth of 5 m, and unlike in Lake Shira, due to a sharp salinity gradient between the mixolimnion and monimolimnion, this depth is very stable. The mixolimnion in Lake Shunet is relatively shallow and the chemocline is inhabited by (1) an extremely dense bacterial community; (2) a population of Cryptomonas sp.; and (3) ciliate community comprising several species. As the mixolimnion of Lake Shunet is not thermally stratified for long period, the phytoplankton and zooplankton populations are not vertically stratified. The gammarids, however, tend to concentrate in a narrow layer located 1-2 m above the chemocline. We believe that in addition to vertical inhomogeneities of both physicochemical parameters, biological and physical factors also play a role in maintaining these inhomogeneities. We conclude that the stratified distributions of the major food web components will have several implications for ecosystem structure and dynamics. Trophic interactions as well as mass and energy flows can be significantly impacted by such heterogeneous distributions. Species spatially separated even by relatively short distances, say a few centimetres will not directly compete. Importantly, we demonstrate that not only bacteria, phytoflagellates and ciliate tend to concentrate in thin layers but also larger-sized species such Gammarus (amphipods) can also under certain environmental conditions have stratified distribution with maxima in relatively thin layer. As the vertical structure of the lake ecosystem is rather complex in such stratified lakes as ours, the strategy of research, including sampling techniques, should consider potentially variable and non-homogeneous distributions.     The vertical structure of a pelagic community in the tropical ocean / M. E. Vinogradov, I. I. Gitelzon, Yu. I. Sorokin // Marine Biology. - 1970. - Vol. 6, Is. 3. - P187-194, DOI 10.1007/BF00347226 . - ISSN 0025-3162
Аннотация: The vertical structure of the ecosystem in the euphotic zone of the western Equatorial Pacific has been studied. The studies were based on a continuous sounding of the bioluminescence field, with simultaneous, vertically aimed sampling made with the aid of a 5l water bottle and plankton nets. The bioluminescence field has a two-maxima structure with a more pronounced and permanent lower maximum found in the oligotrophic regions as deep as 60 to 100 m. In the narrow (10 m) layer of maximum bioluminescence, the concentration of zooplankton, as well as the concentration, activity and production of bacteria and phytoplankton, are several times higher than those in immediately adjacent waters at greater or lesser depth. At the same time, the concentration of nutrient salts in that layer diminishes sharply and approaches zero in the overlying water. Analysis of the data obtained shows that the production processes above the lower maximum layer are dependent not only on the turbulent influx of nutrient salts from the underlying layers, but also on the horizontal supply from the zone of upwelling. A pelagic community, in its different time aspects from the moment of water ascending until its sinking in the convergence zone, is suggested as a common system for modelling. frontal temperature zones -- model -- numerical experiments -- current velocity -- turbulent diffusion -- heat flow
Аннотация: The main purpose of the work is to investigate the frontal temperature zones using the mathematical model of the oceanic temperature field. The forecast of the frontal temperature zone variability is based on satellite data. The model calculates the temperature under different starting conditions and allows for the mean monthly intensity of solar radiation, components of current velocities, and turbulent diffusion. The input data are the mean monthly current velocities and the radiation heat flows. The model is used to calculate the dynamics of the frontal temperature zones in separate parts of the ocean. Based on the results of numerical experiments presented in the paper we estimated the spatial and temporal ranges of the frontal zone variation affected by the advection of currents, horizontal turbulent heat exchange, and the radiation heat flow in separate parts of the ocean. As examples we consider the basic frontal zones in the Atlantic and the Pacific Oceans. The work also shows possible applications of parametrization of spatial horizontal components of the frontal zones functionally related to the processes of heat advection and diffusion in the absence of exact information about the magnitudes of the current velocities and turbulent mixing. Аннотация: Previously we have proposed a continuous model of soil organic matter (SOM) transformation which was based on describing only the most general notions of this process – a gradual increase in SOM stability toward transformation, occurring concurrently with partial decomposition of SOM. The model provided qualitative description of vertical SOM distributions in different soils. In the present study this model has been modified to make the description more realistic. The study demonstrates quantitative correspondence between the calculated and averaged observed vertical distributions of SOM for different biomes. © 2017 Elsevier B.V.

    Principle of the worst scenario in the modelling past and future of biosphere dynamics / S. I. Bartsev, A. G. Degermendzhi, D. V. Erokhin // Ecological Modelling. - 2008. - Vol. 216, Is. 2. - P160-171, DOI 10.1016/j.ecolmodel.2008.03.002 . - ISSN 0304-3800

Irreversible biosphere changes -- Minimal model of biosphere -- The worst scenario principle -- Biospherics -- agricultural land -- anthropogenic effect -- atmosphere-biosphere interaction -- carbon dioxide -- deforestation -- Little Ice Age -- numerical model -- Eurasia -- Europe
Аннотация: The "biosphere-climate" system is subjected to different influences (influx of anthropogenic CO2 and pollutants, deforestation, harmful land management, biological species depopulation, etc.). Therefore, the vital question arises: "Can these influences lead to irreversible negative changes in the climate-biosphere system or a global ecological catastrophe?" The possibility of irreversible changes may be not very high, but one cannot ignore it. So the main aim of our investigation is to evaluate possible consequences of human impact on the biosphere focusing on irreversible changes of it. Traditional mathematical complicated models describe the biosphere in great detail, but the large number of equations and parameters leads to accumulation of uncertainties in the forecast due to inevitable uncertainties of experimental estimations of model parameters. An approach based on the principle of the worst scenario was proposed. Minimization of mathematical model with respect to this principle is conducted to study limiting (but possible) versions of models in which the contribution of the possible compensatory and smoothing mechanisms is minimal. Namely the most unfavorable scenarios (corresponding to the values of parameters at the boundaries of confidence interval) have to be considered in estimating consequences of anthropogenic impact. One of the fastest CO2 releasing mechanisms, based on the positive feedback effect, was considered in the context of the worst scenario principle. The family of simple mathematical models was created for biosphere dynamics representation on different timescales. The main result of the investigation consists in confirmation of the possibility of negative and irreversible changes in the "biosphere-climate" system, caused by amplification of the positive feedback: "anthropogenic emission of CO2 - temperature increase - additional CO2 emission due to decomposition of soil organics". Crucial parameters of models, responsible for avalanche-like biosphere changes, are determined. A realizability of hypotheses on anthropogenic causes of Little Ice Age was estimated by corresponding minimal model. Model were used to show the feasibility of the mechanism describing the changing of agricultural field species into indigenous forests in Europe during the Plague, which led to CO2 decrease and temperature fall. salt lake -- one-dimensioanal vertical model -- temperature and salinity -- profiles of water
Аннотация: Many salt lakes are meromictic, in which the water column is not mixed to the bottom for at least one year. In the stratified lake, the upper (epilimnion) and deep (hypolimnion) layers are distinguished, in which the density gradients are small. Between them is a layer of water (metalimnion), within which the density gradient is great. In the near-bottom layer, hydrogen sulphide accumulates and there is no oxygen. One-dimensional mathematical models are used to determine the dynamics of the vertical thermohaline structure of the salt lake Uchum. Two periods in the annual regime are considered: the period of the absence of the ice cover (IC) and the period with the existence of the IC. The vertical distributions of temperature and water salinity in Lake Uchum have been calculated in different seasons. The results of the calculations are consistent with the data of field measurements.

Аннотация: Forecasting response of the biosphere and regional ecosystems to observed and expected climate change is the fundamental problem with obvious practical significance. Fundamental non-linearity of the climate system and biosphere makes feasible implementing multiple states and threshold processes in the biosphere-climate system (BCS) in response to gradually increasing influence factor (greenhouse gas concentrations growth). Really time series analysis of global temperature and other global and local parameters indicates the presence of abrupt transitions between stationary states. Identification of the switching mechanisms using general circulation models of the atmosphere and the ocean is associated with the obvious difficulties due to their complexity. Understanding the nature of such switches at qualitative level can be achieved by using a conceptual small-scale models. Some variants of possible mechanisms capable of generating these shifts and simultaneously supporting quasi-stationary periods between them are discussed.

Аннотация: In 2002, a "top-down" biomanipulation (reduction of biomass of planktivorous fish Carassius auratus) had been successfully carried out in a small reservoir of the river Bugach (Krasnoyarsk, Russia), after which the cyanobacterial blooming ceased. However, the reservoir ecosystem was absolutely free of Daphnia - the main link of trophic cascade. As supposed, the reduction of blooming was the result of suppression of a direct stimulation effect of planktivorous fish on cyanobacteria, revealed earlier in laboratory experiments. The question arose as to whether the effect of stimulation of cyanobacteria revealed in laboratory may lead to the changes in biomass of cyanobacteria in the reservoir, observed after the biomanipulation. To test this supposition, a mathematical model describing growth of cyanobacteria in the reservoir was developed. The modelling results and field data on biomass of cyanobacteria in summer closely coincided. Modelling calculations showed that direct influence of planktivorous fish could cause the second summer peak of water blooming by Microcystis. On the contrary, removal of crucian carp from the reservoir will not affect the level of water blooming caused by cyanobacteria Anabaena, as this species' growth is not stimulated by fish. Аннотация: The possibility of introducing genetically engineered microorganisms (GEM) into simple biotic cycles of laboratory water microcosms was investigated. The survival of the recombinant strain Escherichia coli Z905 (Ap(r), Lux+) in microcosms depends on the type of model ecosystems. During the absence of algae blooming in the model ecosystem, the part of plasmid-containing cells E.coli decreased fast, and the structure of the plasmid was also modified. In conditions of algae blooming (Ankistrodesmus sp.) an almost total maintenance of plasmid-containing cells was observed in E.coli population. A mathematics model of GEM's behavior in water ecosystems with different level of complexity has been formulated. Mechanisms causing the difference in luminescent exhibition of different species are discussed, and attempts are made to forecast the GEM's behavior in water ecosystems.

Global carbon cycle -- Siberian boreal forests -- mathematical modeling -- atmospheric boundary layer budget method
Аннотация: Difficulties in estimating terrestrial ecosystem CO2 fluxes on regional scales have significantly limited our understanding of the global carbon cycle. We present a method of using tall-tower-based CO2 concentrations for estimating CO2 fluxes over a forested region. With long-term measurements of the CO2 mixing ratio at a 300-m-tall tower, regional CO2 fluxes were estimated for several months, from the first obtained data. Estimates of a monthly-integrated surface CO2 flux over the region were obtained by the analysis of average gradients and estimates of the rate of vertical mixing between the atmospheric boundary layer (ABL) and the free troposphere. For the comparison of the ABL budget method and field measurements a zero-dimensional mathematical model of the ecosystem of Siberian boreal forests was used. The model is a system of ordinary differential equations with additional conditions superimposed on the parameters. The main occurring processes are described - photosynthesis, respiration, seasonal changes of active phytomass, water balance of trees, the influence of light, humidity, and temperature on photosynthesis and respiration. Аннотация: An individual-based model of cyclic development of Cladocera populations was developed on the basis of experimental data. The model takes into account the following processes describing the development of an individual animal: maturation, transition into other reproductive classes, selection of the reproduction mode (parthenogenetic or gamogenetic), release of parthenogenetic progeny and death. The model assumes that switching from asexual to sexual reproduction is controlled by the concentration of food and metabolic by-products of the animal population. Verification of the model by independent experiments demonstrated that (1) during population growth, metabolic by-products build up in the medium, and (2) the effect of metabolic by-products on gamogenesis induction depends on concentration. The hypothesis that the effect of regulating reproductive switching factors should synchronise the development of population with the change of environmental conditions in order to ensure production of the maximum number of diapausing eggs was tested. It is shown that combination of regulating reproductive switching factors maximises the production of diapausing eggs. В© 2002 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.

Climate shifts -- ENSO variability -- pause in global warming
Аннотация: In this study we used HadCRUT4 monthly mean near surface temperature anomalies for 1950–2014 years in order to investigate properties of recent warming. Our aim was to separate changes produced by short-term natural variations and to look on temporal and spatial dynamics of residual temperature anomalies. For this we subtract linear influence of El Nino Southern Oscillation from each grid box of surface temperature measurements. We found that residual global temperature dynamics looks like staircase function: linear trends for three quasi-stable periods 1950–1987, 1988–1997 and 1998–2014 are near zero and near all warming occurred during two shifts of 1987/1988 and 1997/1998 years. Examples of similar staircase behavior of some climate parameters were found in NCEP/NCAR and NASA MERRA reanalysis data. Staircase signal suggests the existence of some regulation mechanism in climate system. This mechanism should maintain global temperature adjusted for El Nino Southern Oscillation near stable in 1950–1987, 1988–1997 and 1998–2014 periods nevertheless all the time growing forcing due to anthropogenic greenhouse gases. © 2015, Korean Meteorological Society and Springer Science+Business Media Dordrecht.

    Ecological biophysics and its role in study of aquatic ecosystems / I. I. Gitel'zon [et al.] // Biophysics. - 1993. - Vol. 38, Is. 6. - P1099-1108 . - ISSN 0006-3509
Аннотация: A concept is formulated on ecological and biophysics as a scientific discipline which studies physical processes and phenomena resulting from the functioning of live supra-organism systems. Three main directions of ecological biophysics are defined: creation of methods of monitoring ecosystems on the basis of probing biophysical fields (fields of bioluminescence and fluorescence); mathematical and physical modelling; and study of the role of live organisms in hydrophysical processes on the ecosystem scale. Examples are given of the realization of the ecologo-biophysical approach in research into the ecosystems of the world ocean, Lake Baikal and the Dnieper and Yenisei reservoirs. В© 1994.
