Аннотация: Abstract: Fatty acid composition and content of 2 forms of sockeye salmon Oncorhynchus nerka from lakes in Kamchatka Peninsula (Russia) were compared. One form of sockeye salmon was anadromous ("marine"), that is, adult fish migrated in ocean to feed and grow and than return in the lake to breed. Fish of another form, kokanee, never migrate in the ocean. Per cent levels of the main indicators of nutritive value, eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA, 20:5n-3), and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA, 22:6n-3), were significantly higher in the landlocked O. nerka. However, concentrations of EPA and DHA per wet weight of filets were higher in the marine form, because of the relatively higher content of sum of fatty acids in their muscle tissue. As concluded, fish fed in marine environment had higher contents of long-chain n-3 fatty acids per wet weight than fish of the same species, fed in fresh waters. In general, both the anadromous sockeye salmon and the landlocked kokanee salmon can be recommended for human diet as a valuable product concerning contents of EPA and DHA. Аннотация: To preserve and utilize the biosphere it is imperative that we understand the long-term dynamics of the primary production process on our planet. Variability of chlorophyll concentration in the ocean is one of the most important components of this process. However, size and access make its investigation labour-intensive. Dependence of primary production on high variability of hydrophysical phenomena in the ocean (fluctuations of currents, frontal zones, etc.) makes it difficult to locate points to measure chlorophyll concentration dynamics. To locate such quasistationary zones with respect to seasonal dynamics of chlorophyll concentration by satellite data the Institute of Biophysics (Russian Academy of Sciences, Siberian Branch) has developed a geoinformation system. Its use made it possible to locate such zones over the entire ocean. The work shows zones on the Central and Northern Atlantic. They form the ground to analyse perennial dynamics of chlorophyll concentration. The quasistationary zones are proposed for systematic monitoring of phytopigment concentration by space-borne and marine craft.

Аннотация: To estimate the seasonal progress of the production process over the planet and its long-standing trend it is important to measure not only the spatial distributions of pigment that represent the rates of photosynthesis but also their time variability. Anthropogenic impact on natural complexes can be efficiently estimated by satellite observations of phytopigment dynamics. This study presents CZCS satellite data processed to reveal spatial inhomogeneity in the seasonal course of chlorophyll concentration in the world ocean on a global scale. Areas with quasistationary and non-stationary seasonal changes in chlorophyll concentration are revealed for the 7.5 years period of CZCS operation. Areas in the world ocean with maximum absolute and relative differences in chlorophyll concentration during different seasons were found. Results are illustrated with a chart of areas in the Atlantic Ocean discerned by dynamic parameters.

Аннотация: Continuous monitoring of phytopigment concentrations and sea surface temperature in the ocean by space-borne methods makes possible to estimate ecological condition of biocenoses in critical areas. In the papers of the authors (Shevyrnogov A.P., Vysotskaya G.S., Gitelzon J.I. 1996) existence of zones, which are quasi-stationary with similar seasonal dynamics of chlorophyll concentration at surface layer of ocean, was shown. Results were obtained on the base of processing of time series of satellite images SeaWiFS. It was shown that fronts and frontal zones coincide with dividing lines between quasi-stationary areas, especially in areas of large oceanic streams. The usage of the seasonal dynamics gives a possibility to circumvent influence of high-frequency component in investigation of dynamics of spatial distribution of surface streams. In addition, an analyses of unstable ocean productivity phenomena, stood out time series of satellite images, showed existence of areas with different types of instability in the all Global ocean. They are observed as adjacent nonstationary zones of different size, which are associated by different ways with known oceanic phenomena. It is evident that dynamics of a spatial distribution of biological productivity and sea surface temperature can give an additional knowledge of complicated picture of surface oceanic layer hydrology. Аннотация: To preserve the biosphere and to use it efficiently, it is necessary to gain a deep insight into the dynamics of the primary production process on our planet. Variability of chlorophyll concentration in the ocean is one of the most important components of this process. These investigations are, however, very labor-consuming, because of the difficulties related to the accessibility of the water surface and its large size. In this work long-term changes in chlorophyll concentration in the surface layer of the ocean have been analyzed on the basis of the CZCS data for 7.5 years from 1979 to 1986 and the SeaWiFS data from 1997 to 2004. It has been shown that the average chlorophyll concentration calculated in all investigated areas varies moderately. However, when analyzing spatially local trends, the areas have been detected that have significant rise and fall of chlorophyll concentrations. Some interesting features of the long-term dynamics of chlorophyll concentration have been found. The opposite directions of long-term trends (essential increase or decrease) cannot be explained only by large-scale hydrological phenomena in the ocean (currents, upwellings, etc.). The measured chlorophyll concentration results from the balance between production and destruction processes. Which process dominates is determined by various hydrophysical, hydrobiological, and climatic processes, leading to sharp rises or falls of the concentration. It is important to estimate the scale of the areas in which this or that process dominates. Therefore, the study addresses not only the dynamics of the mean value but also the dynamics of the areas in which the dominance of certain factors has led to a sharp fall or rise in chlorophyll concentration. Аннотация: The work presents the data on the spatial distribution of temperature anomalies in the Global Ocean, based on the long-term measurements with the AVHRR satellite equipment. It is noteworthy that such results can be only obtained by using long time series of satellite images. To obtain them by ship-borne methods is actually impossible. The proposed anomaly criterion is equal to a difference between minimum/maximum and average temperature, normed for the mean square deviation. The difference is calculated from the whole time series (with regard to a season). Based on this criterion, anomalies can be distinguished on the background of usual seasonal dynamics at various absolute values of deviations of the measured parameter. Besides, rare, single, fluctuations can be also revealed. Based on the proposed criterion, connected zones have been defined. These zones occur almost in every part of the Global Ocean. The data obtained have been analyzed in association with the CZCS (1978-1986) and SeaWiFS satellite images in order to compare them with the areas of anomalous dynamics of chlorophyll concentration and the regions quasistationary in the seasonal dynamics of chlorophyll. Anomalies in the temperature dynamics are of exceptional importance for the formation of climatic deviations; they affect the ocean-atmosphere interaction and reflect variations in the hydrological structure of the surface waters. The work presents a comparison with the dynamics of chlorophyll concentration distribution determined from the SeaWiFS data for the Atlantic Ocean. В© 2003 COSPAR. Published by Elsevier Ltd. Аннотация: The paper analyzes the stability of areas in the Global Ocean, which are quasistationary with respect to the seasonal dynamics of chlorophyll concentration. Such areas were first discovered based on the CZCS data. They occur almost in all regions of the Global Ocean. They reflect typical seasonal dynamics of phytoplankton, which depends on both large ocean currents and local hydrological instability. It is related to the displacement of frontal zones and to local hydrological anomalies. Since the completion of the CZCS work there has been a 10 years gap in monitoring chlorophyll spatial distribution dynamics in the ocean. The reason is the long absence of equipment on the orbit, which would be suitable for the measurement of chlorophyll concentration. Recently, SeaWiFS data have been accumulated and their quantity is sufficient for the crude statistical analysis of image time series for 25 years. Thus, it has become possible to obtain data on the long-term stability of quasistationary areas and, therefore, on the stability of large-scale hydrological phenomena in the Atlantic Ocean. To preserve the biosphere and to make appropriate use of it, it is imperative to have a deep insight into the long-term dynamics of the primary production on the planet. To investigate the dynamics of chlorophyll concentration based on satellite data, the Institute of Biophysics (Russian Academy of Sciences, Siberian Branch) has developed a geoinformation system. It was used to detect the areas in the global ocean that are quasistationary in relation to seasonal dynamics of chlorophyll concentration. Areas such as these, found in the Indian Ocean, are described in this work. These areas form the basis for the analysis of long-term dynamics of chlorophyll concentration. In these quasistationary zones systematic monitoring of phytopigment concentration is conducted by space-borne and marine craft. The work presents long-term satellite-based data on the space distribution of anomalous deviations of chlorophyll concentration in the ocean. An anomaly criterion is proposed and maps of Pacific Ocean areas with a high probability of anomalies are presented. В© 2004 Taylor and Francis Ltd.

Аннотация: The new data on anomalies in seasonal dynamics of chlorophyll concentration in the ocean have altered the approach to the analysis of long-term trends of phytopigments in the surface layer of the ocean. Zones have been found in which at various times there was a many-fold increase in chlorophyll concentration versus its usual level. These changes are local in time and space. If anomalies in the long-term tendencies in the change of phytopigment surface distribution in the ocean are ignored in the analysis, the resulting picture will inadequately reflect the real processes. The work presents the results of the analysis of long-term trends of chlorophyll concentration on the basis of the CZCS satellite data in the Atlantic Ocean. The results are given as maps representing different variants of trends. The data obtained can be used to analyze the consequences of long-term changes of climate and changes in the interaction between the atmosphere and the ocean. В©2002 COSPAR. Аннотация: The work presents long-standing CZCS-satellite-based data about spatial distribution of anomalies in chlorophyll concentration and temperature of the ocean. An anomaly criterion is proposed. Maps of Atlantic ocean areas with elevated probability of anomalies are given. Properties of anomalous zones in different parts of the Atlantic ocean are discussed. Satellite-based maps of anomaly coefficients for chlorophyll concentration and temperature in the Atlantic ocean have been shown to feature substantial differences, the zones of elevated anomaly of chlorophyll concentration and temperature - to be close only in the vicinity of the Amazon outflow into the Atlantic ocean. Along with fundamental knowledge about dynamics of biological phenomena in the ocean the methods described may be used to reveal deviations due to anthropogenic impact. The methods presented may be used to process SeaWiFS prograna data. The data derived may be used to analyze long-standing time series to estimate randomness of cunent changes. В©2002 COSPAR. Аннотация: The influence of a monolayer of a palmitic acid on amplitude-frequency characteristics of temperature oscillations caused by thermal spots of a surface film was experimentally determined in a Langmuir tank. An analysis of the power spectra showed that the temperature oscillations were multimodal. In addition, no consistant differences between the spectrum for a pure surface and the spectrum for a surface covered by an acid monolayer were found. A roughened gain-frequency factor was found that is equal to the ratio of the average period between the thermal spots to the dispersion of the time series of temperature oscillations. The factor significantly differed over a wide range of temperatures for a pure surface and for a surface covered with the monolayer. The experimental results do not confirm the existence of a leading frequency in the temperature oscillations of a cold surface film due to an appearance of thermal spots.

Аннотация: A concept is formulated on ecological and biophysics as a scientific discipline which studies physical processes and phenomena resulting from the functioning of live supra-organism systems. Three main directions of ecological biophysics are defined: creation of methods of monitoring ecosystems on the basis of probing biophysical fields (fields of bioluminescence and fluorescence); mathematical and physical modelling; and study of the role of live organisms in hydrophysical processes on the ecosystem scale. Examples are given of the realization of the ecologo-biophysical approach in research into the ecosystems of the world ocean, Lake Baikal and the Dnieper and Yenisei reservoirs. В© 1994.

Аннотация: Characteristics of the diurnal rhythm of the bioluminescence field are analyzed on the basis of experimental data obtained in the region around Kamchatka peninsula (50В°3 1'N; 163В°50'E). The feasibility of reconstructing the nocturnal structure of the bioluminescence field by measurements made at other times of the day has been demonstrated. Diurnal rhythm parameters for the bioluminescent field of several other studied areas of the ocean have been defined. The temporal parameters feature linear latitudinal dependence. At the equator the boundaries of morning and evening transition periods are 05:06 to 07:30 and 17:48 to 19:54 hrs, respectively. In the Barents Sea in spring these boundaries are 02:42 to 04:06 and 19:48 to 21:12 hrs. Boundary times of diurnal rhythm do not deviate from the linear regression by more than 10%.

Аннотация: The culture collection maintained at the Institute of Biophysics (IB), Siberian Division, Russian Academy of Sciences, is the only deposit in Russia and CIS which contains about 700 strains of five species of marine luminous bacteria sampled in various sites of the World Ocean. The strains collected are used for identification of luminous bacteria; studying their physiology, biochemistry, and cytology; and developing concepts of organization and metabolism of luminous bacteria under natural and laboratory conditions. Methods of their storage and practical use are developed. The results of these studies are summarized in a data bank, which will be incorporated into the general network of data banks on microbial cultures kept in Russia and into the international network of data banks on microorganisms (MSDN). Systematization of information on luminous bacteria possessing a unique visual marker allows their extensive use in basic research and genetic engineering, for environmental and medical applications, and for biotechnological purposes.

Аннотация: The notion of ecological biophysics as a scientific discipline investigating physical processes and phenomena caused by functioning of the living super-organism systems is formulated. The three main constituents of the ecological biophysics are defined: elaboration of the monitoring methods of the basis of sensing of the biophysical fields (of bioluminescence and fluorescence), mathematical and physical modeling and investigation of the part of living organisms in the hydrophysical processes of the ecosystem scale. Examples of realization of the ecological biophysical approach in the process of investigations of the World Ocean, Lake Baikal, the reservoirs of Dnieper and Yenisei revers are given.

Аннотация: AVHRR MCSST data for the periods 1982-2000 (mean weekly data) were used to calculate mean gradient fields in the ocean for different periods of time. Three-month averaged sea surface temperature gradients (SSTG) and their mean seasonal variations have been studied for 25 points in the large-scale oceanic fronts zones. Major oceanic fronts in the Atlantic and Pacific have been identified and compared in literature. In the North Atlantic and Pacific, the areas under study were the North Polar Front and Subpolar Fronts. In the South Atlantic and Pacific we studied the region of the Antarctic Circumpolar Current (ACC) and the fronts formed by this current, known as the South Polar Front, and the Subantarctic Front. SSTG were also calculated for El Nino (Southeast Pacific) and Benguela Current (Southeast Atlantic). In warm periods seasonal SSTG in the North Atlantic markedly increased and exhibit some interannual cycles. The correlation between the North Atlantic Oscillation index and seasonal SSTG for a single point in the Gulf Stream zone can be the key point for evaluation of heat transfer by the currents to the coast of East Europe. In the Southern Atlantic, the SSTG values are low during the cold period (summer in the southern hemisphere) in the ACC zone and increase in the warm season (winter in the southern hemisphere). It also exhibits interannual cycles. In the Northwest Pacific for some points in the Subpolar Front the SSTG values are high in the cold period (winter). Here at seven points in the spring of 1993 and 2000 the calculations disclosed significant increase of the gradient. In these years, the anomalous SSTG in Subpolar Front and South Polar Front were found to vary synchronously in both hemispheres, with maximum intensity in spring (North Pacific) and in summer (South Pacific). Mean annual SSTG in the El Nino zone and south oscillation index have been found to exhibit some correlation. Major jet currents periodically form high-gradient temperature fields and from the temperature satellite data we can derive information about variation in the large-scale fronts in the Global Ocean. Аннотация: Satellite monitoring of large-scale ocean fields allows collection and analyse of information on dynamics processes in various areas of the ocean. Investigation of the World Ocean processes involves the determination of space-time changes of sea surface temperature (SST). Water temperature of the ocean is one of major characteristics of surface water masses. Distribution of water temperature depends not only on regional climate peculiarities but also on formation of high gradient temperature zones. These zones emerge due to interaction of different current structure, circulation and eddies. Some more important characteristics of such zones are space dimensions and time of existence (lifetime). Space-time scales of the above structure have not been investigated in detail. The aim of the paper is to study space-time changes of the surface temperature frontal zones and frontal partitions in the ocean by AVHRR satellite information.

Аннотация: The main purpose of the work is to investigate the frontal temperature zones using the mathematical model of the oceanic temperature field. The forecast of the frontal temperature zone variability is based on satellite data. The model calculates the temperature under different starting conditions and allows for the mean monthly intensity of solar radiation, components of current velocities, and turbulent diffusion. The input data are the mean monthly current velocities and the radiation heat flows. The model is used to calculate the dynamics of the frontal temperature zones in separate parts of the ocean. Based on the results of numerical experiments presented in the paper we estimated the spatial and temporal ranges of the frontal zone variation affected by the advection of currents, horizontal turbulent heat exchange, and the radiation heat flow in separate parts of the ocean. As examples we consider the basic frontal zones in the Atlantic and the Pacific Oceans. The work also shows possible applications of parametrization of spatial horizontal components of the frontal zones functionally related to the processes of heat advection and diffusion in the absence of exact information about the magnitudes of the current velocities and turbulent mixing. Аннотация: The vertical structure of the ecosystem in the euphotic zone of the western Equatorial Pacific has been studied. The studies were based on a continuous sounding of the bioluminescence field, with simultaneous, vertically aimed sampling made with the aid of a 5l water bottle and plankton nets. The bioluminescence field has a two-maxima structure with a more pronounced and permanent lower maximum found in the oligotrophic regions as deep as 60 to 100 m. In the narrow (10 m) layer of maximum bioluminescence, the concentration of zooplankton, as well as the concentration, activity and production of bacteria and phytoplankton, are several times higher than those in immediately adjacent waters at greater or lesser depth. At the same time, the concentration of nutrient salts in that layer diminishes sharply and approaches zero in the overlying water. Analysis of the data obtained shows that the production processes above the lower maximum layer are dependent not only on the turbulent influx of nutrient salts from the underlying layers, but also on the horizontal supply from the zone of upwelling. A pelagic community, in its different time aspects from the moment of water ascending until its sinking in the convergence zone, is suggested as a common system for modelling.
