Аннотация: This research was aimed at obtaining a closed control system. This was achieved by placing all the technological processes providing for human vital activities within the hermetically sealed space, and by transferring the entire control and guidance of these processes to people inhabiting the system. In contrast to existing biological life support systems, man has been included not only as a participant of metabolism, but as an operator who is the central figure in collecting information, making decisions and controlling all technological processes. To tackle this problem, the "BIOS-3" experimental complex was created for performing long-term experiments using different structures of biological life-support system. The experiment lasted six months and consisted of three stages. During the first stage the system was comprised of two equivalent phytotrons with the culture of wheat and an assortment of vegetable plants, and the living compartment. At the second stage, one of the phytotrons was removed while a compartment of chlorella cultivators was introduced. The third stage differed from the second, the former using wheat phytotron and the latter employing phytotron with an assortment of vegetable cultures. Three men inhabited the system simultaneously. The experiment demonstrated that a biological life support system controlled autonomously from the inside is feasible within a small confined space. However, immunological and microbiological research shows, that the medium created by the system is not fully adequate for man. In conclusion, some prospects have been outlined for further studies of biological life support systems. В© 1976.

Аннотация: Experimental models of small biotic cycles of different degree of closure and complexity with spatially separated components based on unicellular organisms have been studied. Gas closure of components looped into "autotroph-heterotroph" (chlorella-yeast) system doubled the lifetime of the system (as opposed to individually cultivated components). Higher complexity of the heterotroph component consisting of two yeast species also increased the lifetime of the system through more complete utilization of the substrate by competing yeast species. The lifetime of gas and substrate closed "producer-consumer" trophic chain (chlorella-paramecia) increased to 7 months. In 60 days the components' numbers reached their steady state followed by more than 40 cycles of the medium. The role of a predator organism (protozoan) in nitrogen cycling was demonstrated; reproduction of protozoa correlated directly with their emission of nitrogen in the ammonia form that is most optimum for growth of chlorella.

Аннотация: This study addresses competition between the Paramecium bursaria and zoochlorella - endosymbiosis and the infusoria Paramecium caudatum in a closed aquatic system. The system is a natural model of a simple biotic cycle. P. bursaria consumes glucose and oxygen released by its zoochlorella and releases nitrogenous compounds and carbon dioxide necessary for algal photosynthesis. P. caudatum was fed on bacteria. It was shown that the infusoria P. bursaria united in one cycle with Chlorella had a higher competitive ability than P. caudatum. With any initial percentage of the infusoria in the mixed culture, the end portion of P. bursaria reached 90 - 99%, which was significantly higher than the end portion of the P. caudatum population. It is assumed that the sustenance expenditures of P. caudatum were greater than those of the endosymbiotic paramecium, i.e. the closing of the components into a biotic cycle leads to a decrease in sustenance expenditures.     Gene pool maintenance and the prospects for using a special-purpose luminous bacteria collection / E. K. Rodicheva [et al.] // Applied Biochemistry and Microbiology. - 1998. - Vol. 34, Is. 1. - P70-76 . - ISSN 0003-6838
Аннотация: The culture collection maintained at the Institute of Biophysics (IB), Siberian Division, Russian Academy of Sciences, is the only deposit in Russia and CIS which contains about 700 strains of five species of marine luminous bacteria sampled in various sites of the World Ocean. The strains collected are used for identification of luminous bacteria; studying their physiology, biochemistry, and cytology; and developing concepts of organization and metabolism of luminous bacteria under natural and laboratory conditions. Methods of their storage and practical use are developed. The results of these studies are summarized in a data bank, which will be incorporated into the general network of data banks on microbial cultures kept in Russia and into the international network of data banks on microorganisms (MSDN). Systematization of information on luminous bacteria possessing a unique visual marker allows their extensive use in basic research and genetic engineering, for environmental and medical applications, and for biotechnological purposes.

Аннотация: Effect of different concentrations of salts on natural and recombinant strains of Bacillus subtilis and Escherichia coli was studied. The recombinant strain of B. subtilis was found to be more osmotolerant than the wild-type strain of this bacterium, whereas the opposite situation was observed for the recombinant and wildtype strains of E. coli. Some salts exerted a bacteriostatic effect on E. coli and B. subtilis. The adaptive capacity of recombinant strains depended on the number of plasmid copies in the cells. The introduction of recombinant bacteria into model ecosystems resulted in the generation of their variants with increased osmotolerance.

Аннотация: High reproduction rates make the bacterial component of ecosystems a good indicator of the state of the system on the whole. This determines the necessity to develop rapid monitoring of the functional state of the bacterial component of small ecosystems. Information about substrate concentration in the population is indicative of the state of the bacterial culture. Conventional methods of monitoring the concentration of integral substrate in the system take time much longer than the changes in the ecosystem. The paper presents theoretical foundations for the logical sequence "catalase activity - intracellular substrate concentration - estimate of substrate consumed by bacteria" for experimental verification and as a consequence of development of the integral method of monitoring the bacterial population on the basis of determining bacterial catalase activity.
