Аннотация: The effect of ambient temperature on the composition of intracellular fatty acids and the release of free fatty acids (FFA) into a medium by cyanobacterium Spirulina platensis and eukaryotic microalgae, Chlorella vulgaris and Botryococcus braunii, was studied using their batch cultures. It was found that all the species studied, regardless of their taxonomic status, responded to the temperature regime by similar changes in their intracellular fatty acid composition: the relative content of more unsaturated fatty acids decreased with the elevation of temperature. At the same time, in the prokaryote, this temperature shift blocked, first of all, the elongation of 16:0 to 18:0 and then their further desaturation. In eukaryotes, the change in the desaturation of dienoic to trienoic fatty acids was the most pronounced process. The ratio of dienoic to trienoic fatty acids remained almost unchanged in S. platensis. The relative content of extracellular unsaturated FFA increased in the prokaryotic organism S. platensis at a higher temperature. But no significant changes in the composition of extracellular unsaturated FFA were detected in eukaryotic algae upon temperature elevation.

Аннотация: The source of radioactive contamination of the Yenisei River floodplain, including contamination with transuranic elements, is the Mining-and-Chemical Combine of the Russian Ministry of Atomic Energy, which has for many years been producing weapons-grade plutonium. Transuranic elements have been detected not only in the soil and sediment of the river but also in the biomass of aquatic plants. This work is an investigation of accumulation and release of 241Am by a submerged macrophyte of the Yenisei River (Elodea canadensis) in laboratory experiments. In 2000-2003, laboratory experiments were carried out with biomass of E. canadensis Mich. and filtered river water. The samples were collected from the Yenisei River upstream of the discharge of the Combine's radioactive effluent. The experiments showed that 241Am is accumulated by Elodea biomass: the activity concentration of 241Am can reach 3280 В± 240 Bq/g, with the concentration factor for 241Am 16 600 В± 2200 l/kg. Results of chemical fractionation have proved that in the course of 241Am accumulation by Elodea biomass, 241Am tightly bound to biomass increases from 11% to 27% of the total 241Am in the biomass. Release of 241Am from the decaying Elodea biomass has been evaluated experimentally. By the end of the experiment (lasting up to 127 days), the Elodea plants had lost up to 65% of their initial 241Am activity and the rate of 241Am release into the water environment reached 23 Bq/day. Аннотация: The study addresses 242Pu accumulation by Elodea canadensis, one of the abundant species of submerged plants in the Yenisei River. 242Pu in water samples of the "Elodea - Yenisei River water" model system and in the biomass fractions was determined ?-spectrometrically, following radiochemical recovery of 242Pu using 236Pu - a chemical yield tracer. The experiments on accumulation of 242Pu by Elodea biomass showed that the activity concentration of 242Pu can reach 21 В± 2 Bq/g dry wt, with the concentration factor for 242Pu 13100 В± 2100 L/kg dry wt. Results of chemical fractionation proved that during the first few hours of the experiment 242Pu contained in Elodea was mainly concentrated in the exchangeable and the adsorbed fractions of biomass (about 100%). As Elodea biomass accumulated 242Pu, the absolute amount of 242Pu in the exchangeable and the adsorbed fractions remained almost unchanged, although the portion of 242Pu tightly bound to biomass increased. At the end of the experiment, on day 7, 242Pu tightly bound to biomass (fractions of organics and mineral residue) constituted 43-63% (in different experiments) of the total 242Pu in the biomass. Aquatic plants -- Essential/beneficial elements -- Non-essential elements -- Water conductivity
Аннотация: Accumulation of essential/beneficial and non-essential chemical elements by submerged (Stuckenia pectinata (L.) Borner) and emergent (Phragmites australis (Cav.) Trin. ex Steud.) rooted macrophytes in three water bodies was studied as dependent on water salinity (specific conductivity) and main environmental factors (temperature, pH of water, growing period, element contents in water and sediments). Inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometry (ICP - OES) was used for the element detection in the plants, sediments, and water. Multivariate statistics redundancy analysis (RDA) showed that investigated factors together explained 37.8 - 44.7% and 29.9 - 42.6% of the essential/beneficial and non-essential elements variability, respectively, whereas salinity was one of the main factors determining the accumulation of a number of elements (Mg, S, Na, Li, Sr, Sb) by the macrophytes. A decrease in the essential element contents (K, P, N, Cu, Zn) was observed in both species of the macrophytes during the growing season. Environmental factors (salinity, growing period, and pH) were more significant than the element contents in water and the sediments for the essential/beneficial element accumulation by two species of the macrophytes. The element contents in the sediments to a greater extent determined non-essential element accumulation by P. australis than by S. pectinata. The study showed that the efficiency of using P. australis and S. pectinata for remediation of aquatic ecosystems contaminated by heavy metals should not decrease with a salinity increase. © 2020 Elsevier Masson SAS

Triticum aestivum -- Raphanus sativus var. minor -- fluorescence -- heat tolerance -- pigments -- CO2 exchange
Аннотация: The heat tolerance of wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) and radish (Raphanus sativus L. var. minor) cenoses exposed to elevated and damaging air temperatures (35 degreesC for 20 h, 45 degreesC for 7 h) under photoculture conditions at various levels of photosynthetically active radiation (PAR) was assessed by measuring characteristics of the slow induction curve of chlorophyll fluorescence at 682 and 734 nm and the CO2 exchange rate. Irrespective of the illumination level, the exposure of the cenoses to 35 degreesC did not induce irreversible changes in the plant photosynthetic apparatus. The lowest extent of damage to wheat and radish cenoses exposed to 45 degreesC was observed at 150 W/m(2) of PAR, whereas the highest damage of the plants was observed at an illumination level that was close to the compensation point of the cenose photosynthesis (50-70 W/m(2) of PAR at air temperature of 24 degreesC). Viability index proved to be the most sensitive. characteristic, compared to other characteristics, which were determined by measuring the slow phase of fluorescence induction at 682 and 734 nm. In the cenoses studied, the pattern of changes in the viability index in response to a stress factor was close to the changes in the photosynthetic rate.

Аннотация: Three levels of chemical communications involved plankton Crustacea are considered: 1) Influence of zooplankton excretion on phytoplankton; 2) Influence of zooplankton excretion on the individuals of the same or other species of the same trophic level; 3) Influence of chemical cues released by predatory zooplankton and fish on herbivorous zooplankton. The data on the influence of excreted cues on some physiological (growth, reproduction, feeding, etc.) and behavioural (vertical and horizontal migrations) characters of planktonic crustaceans are presented. Ecological role and chemistry cues responsible for the interactions of different trophic levels can be different. It is considered that chemical communications in aquatic ecosystems can be provided with: 1) Species-specific cues that strictly influence particular biological functions (communication system of feromone type); 2) Non-specific cues that strictly influence particular functions (system of regulator, that act at the whole ecosystem as the hormonal system of an organism). 3) Non-specific substances with broad (non-specidic) influence - toxic substances of "biocondition substances" according to classification of Novikov and Kharlamova (2000).
