Аннотация: The main obstacle to using mineralized human solid and liquid wastes as a source of mineral elements for plants cultivated in bio-technical life support systems (BLSS) is that they contain NaCl. The purpose of this study is to determine whether mineralized human wastes can be used to prepare the nutrient solution for long-duration conveyor cultivation of uneven-aged wheat and Salicornia europaea L. plant community. Human solid and liquid wastes were mineralized by the method of "wet incineration" developed by Yu. Kudenko. They served as a basis for preparing the solutions that were used for conveyor-type cultivation of wheat community represented by 5 age groups, planted with a time interval of 14 days. Wheat was cultivated hydroponically on expanded clay particles. To reduce salt content of the nutrient solution, every two weeks, after wheat was harvested, 12 L of solution was removed from the wheat irrigation tank and used for Salicornia europaea cultivation in water culture in a conveyor mode. The Salicornia community was represented by 2 age groups, planted with a time interval of 14 days. As some portion of the nutrient solution used for wheat cultivation was regularly removed, sodium concentration in the wheat irrigation solution did not exceed 400 mg/L, and mineral elements contained in the removed portion were used for Salicornia cultivation. The experiment lasted 4 months. The total wheat biomass productivity averaged 30.1 gВ·m -2В·day -1, and the harvest index amounted to 36.8%. The average productivity of Salicornia edible biomass on a dry weight basis was 39.3 gВ·m -2В·day -1, and its aboveground mass contained at least 20% of NaCl. Thus, the proposed technology of cultivation of wheat and halophyte plant community enables using mineralized human wastes as a basis for preparing nutrient solutions and including NaCl in the mass exchange of the BLSS; moreover, humans are supplied with additional amounts of leafy vegetables. Аннотация: This closing technology developed for experimental BIOS-3 facility seems to be highly expedient for providing normal life conditions in high-latitude settlements and first of all for life-support of Antarctic stations. Obvious advantages of ecological life-support system based on photosynthesis, in comparison with used now in Antarctic Continent, are: 1) highly effective cascade usage of energy for performance of all functions of life-support; 2) minimization of environmental pollution due to processing human excretions and polluted water; 3) providing crew with fresh vegetable food all-the-year-round; 4) contact with alive plants is powerful source of positive emotions and effective means of psychological relaxation; 5) significant reduction of the transport charges on delivery of foodstuff to Antarctic Continent. First of all, the usage of closed ecosystem can be recommended for high-mountainous station "Concordia". Similar ecosystems can be used in northern high-latitude settlements - Russian North, Canadian Northern territories, Alaska. Finally, the experience of closed ecological life-support system operation in Antarctic Continent can serve as the best range for modeling some aspects of Martian mission - its ecological, biotechnological and psychophysiological problems - since there are no natural conditions on the Earth closer to Mars with respect to severity of a place.

Аннотация: A mathematical model concerning the interaction of plants and rhizospheric microorganisms on complete mineral medium and under nitrogen limitation has been constructed. The model takes into account the closeness of plants and microorganisms in terms of the matter released by the plant and consumed by the microorganisms. The effect of rhizospheric microorganisms on plant growth with normal carbon dioxide and complete mineral medium has been demonstrated. Plants interacting with microorganisms have a greater biomass than plants growing without microorganisms. Wheat growth stimulation by metabolites of rhizospheric microorganisms under laboratory conditions on artificial soil has been experimentally demonstrated (Pechurkin, 1997). Under nitrogen limitation , the biomass of plants, with or without microorganisms, is identical, and is substantially reduced as compared with the medium with standard nitrogen. В© 1999 COSPAR. Аннотация: A mathematical model describing the interaction of plants and rhizospheric microorganisms on complete mineral medium at a higher CO2 level in the atmosphere was constructed. The positive effect of CO2-enrichment on the system plant - rhizospheric micro organisms was shown. The effect of rhizospheric microorganisms on plant growth at normal and high level of carbon dioxide was demonstrated. It was shown that the biomass of plant in the system is smaller than the biomass of plant growing without microorganisms. It was experimentally demonstrated that a simple ecosystem wheat - Pseudomonas putida - artificial soil develops and functions differently than its individual constituents in the case of a wheat-artificial soil system. With unlimited nutrition and a higher CO2 level (0.06%), plants with roots inoculated with micro organisms have a smaller biomass than plants that were not inoculated with micro organisms.

Аннотация: The work presents the results of the study aimed at determining the seasonal dynamics of the spectral brightness and reflectance of agricultural crops (wheat, barley and oats) in the Krasnoyarskii Krai (Russia). The analysis of spectral curves obtained through field ground measurements and from satellite data showed that fine spectral differences can be used to study the spatial distribution of various types of vegetation and their ecological state. Based on the created electronic spectral brightness data base, the possibilities are shown of using spectrophotometric information for determining morphophysiological changes occurring in the plants and their species composition. The determined contrasts can be effectively used to obtain necessary information while processing space images, which suffer from natural interferences (varying optical thickness of the atmosphere, cloudiness, alterations in the scanner's angle of view, varying solar height, and highly inhomogeneous underlying surface). Аннотация: Remote sensing applications have greatly enhanced ability to monitor and manage in the areas of forestry. Accurate measurements of regional and global scale vegetation dynamics (phenology) are required to improve models and understanding of inter-annual variability in terrestrial ecosystem carbon exchange and climate-biosphere interactions. Study of vegetation phenology is required for understanding of variability in ecosystem. In this paper, monitoring of vegetation dynamics using time series of satellite data is presented. Vegetation variability (vegetation rate) in different topoclimatic areas is investigated. Original software using IDL interactive language for processing of satellite long-term data series was developed. To investigate growth dynamics vegetation rate inferred from remote sensing was used. All estimations based on annual time series of Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) imagery. Vegetation rate for Enhanced Vegetation Index (EVI) and Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) was calculated using MODIS data. The time series covers spring seasons of each of 9 years, from 2000 to 2008. Comparison of EVI and NDVI derived growth rates has shown that NDVI derived rates reveal spatial structure better. Using long-term data of vegetation rates variance was estimated that helps to reveal areas with anomalous growth rate. Such estimation shows sensitivity degree of different areas to different topoclimatic conditions. Woods of heights depend on spatial topoclimatic variability unlike woods of lowlands. Principal components analysis shows vegetation with different rate conditions. Also it reveals vegetation of same type in areas with different conditions. It was demonstrated that using of methods for estimating the dynamic state of vegetation based on remote sensing data enables successful monitoring of vegetation phenology. В© 2011 COSPAR. Аннотация: The present study addresses the seasonal dynamics of productivity and species composition of the meadow and steppe vegetation communities in Khakassia, determined using the ground-based and satellite data of 2017. The MODIS/Terra satellite data were used to analyze the Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) and the Land Surface Water Index (LSWI). The NDVI and LSWI were found to be related to the productivity of the meadow and steppe vegetation. The NDVI increased as the portion of the mesophyte grasses in the grass canopy became larger. The LSWI was higher in the steppe communities, which had lower projective coverage, with spots of bare soil, than in the meadow communities, with their abundant vegetation. © Published under licence by IOP Publishing Ltd.

Аннотация: The source of radioactive contamination of the Yenisei River floodplain, including contamination with transuranic elements, is the Mining-and-Chemical Combine of the Russian Ministry of Atomic Energy, which has for many years been producing weapons-grade plutonium. Transuranic elements have been detected not only in the soil and sediment of the river but also in the biomass of aquatic plants. This work is an investigation of accumulation and release of 241Am by a submerged macrophyte of the Yenisei River (Elodea canadensis) in laboratory experiments. In 2000-2003, laboratory experiments were carried out with biomass of E. canadensis Mich. and filtered river water. The samples were collected from the Yenisei River upstream of the discharge of the Combine's radioactive effluent. The experiments showed that 241Am is accumulated by Elodea biomass: the activity concentration of 241Am can reach 3280 В± 240 Bq/g, with the concentration factor for 241Am 16 600 В± 2200 l/kg. Results of chemical fractionation have proved that in the course of 241Am accumulation by Elodea biomass, 241Am tightly bound to biomass increases from 11% to 27% of the total 241Am in the biomass. Release of 241Am from the decaying Elodea biomass has been evaluated experimentally. By the end of the experiment (lasting up to 127 days), the Elodea plants had lost up to 65% of their initial 241Am activity and the rate of 241Am release into the water environment reached 23 Bq/day. Аннотация: The study addresses 99Tc accumulation and release by Elodea canadensis, one of the abundant species of submerged plants in the Yenisei River. 99Tc in water samples of the "Elodea - Yenisei River water" model system and in the biomass fractions was measured using a liquid scintillation analyzer. Experiments on accumulation of 99Tc by Elodea showed that 99Tc activity concentration can reach 120В±6 Bq/g dry wt, with the concentration factor for 99Tc 2700В±500 l/kg dry wt. In experiments on 99Tc release, over 504 hours about 82% of the total 99Tc activity was released into the water from the plant; most of 99Tc was released within the first 192 hours. The data obtained using sequential chemical fractionation of biomass confirmed the experimental data on 99Tc release, which suggested that most of the biomass-bound 99Tc was adsorbed on the surface of Elodea. 99Tc tightly bound to biomass (fractions of organics and mineral residue) constituted just 17% of the total 99Tc activity. Аннотация: The study addresses 242Pu accumulation by Elodea canadensis, one of the abundant species of submerged plants in the Yenisei River. 242Pu in water samples of the "Elodea - Yenisei River water" model system and in the biomass fractions was determined ?-spectrometrically, following radiochemical recovery of 242Pu using 236Pu - a chemical yield tracer. The experiments on accumulation of 242Pu by Elodea biomass showed that the activity concentration of 242Pu can reach 21 В± 2 Bq/g dry wt, with the concentration factor for 242Pu 13100 В± 2100 L/kg dry wt. Results of chemical fractionation proved that during the first few hours of the experiment 242Pu contained in Elodea was mainly concentrated in the exchangeable and the adsorbed fractions of biomass (about 100%). As Elodea biomass accumulated 242Pu, the absolute amount of 242Pu in the exchangeable and the adsorbed fractions remained almost unchanged, although the portion of 242Pu tightly bound to biomass increased. At the end of the experiment, on day 7, 242Pu tightly bound to biomass (fractions of organics and mineral residue) constituted 43-63% (in different experiments) of the total 242Pu in the biomass. Аннотация: In this work we experimentally estimated the capacities of the key components of the Yenisei River (Russia): particulate suspended matter (seston), diatom microalgae, and submerged macrophytes for accumulating Am-241 from water. In our experiments large particles of seston (>8 mu m), comparable in size with diatoms, took up most of americium from water. The accumulation of americium by isolated diatom algae (Asterionella formosa and Diatoma vulgare) was lower than by total seston. The concentration factors (CFs) of Am-241 for seston of the Yenisei River in our experiments were (2.8-6.9).10(5); for diatoms -(1.5-4.2)-10(4). The Us for aquatic plant Elodea canadensis were within the same order of magnitude as those for diatoms. Activity concentration and CFs of Am-241 were nearly the same in experiments under dark and light conditions. This is indicative of an energy independent mechanism of americium uptake from the water by diatoms and submerged macrophytes. (C) 2009 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Аннотация: The aim of the paper is to investigate accumulation of artificial radionuclides by the Yenisei river aquatic plants collected in the area affected by the activity of the Mining-and-Chemical Combine (Zheleznogorsk) from 1997 to 2000. The samples of aquatic plants were of four species: Potamogeton lucens, Fontinalis antipyretica, Elodea canadensis, and Ceratophyllum demersum. The gamma-spectrometric analysis of the samples of aquatic plants for artificial radionuclides revealed a wide spectrum of radionuclides. Radionuclides of activation origin were found in the aquatic plants taken both near the Combine and 200 km down of it. The radiochemical analysis of aquatic plants revealed strontium and plutonium isotopes. Among the aquatic plants, the highest concentration factors for the principal radionuclides were recorded in Fontinalis antipyretica (water moss).

Аннотация: Accumulation of essential/beneficial and non-essential chemical elements by submerged (Stuckenia pectinata (L.) Borner) and emergent (Phragmites australis (Cav.) Trin. ex Steud.) rooted macrophytes in three water bodies was studied as dependent on water salinity (specific conductivity) and main environmental factors (temperature, pH of water, growing period, element contents in water and sediments). Inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometry (ICP - OES) was used for the element detection in the plants, sediments, and water. Multivariate statistics redundancy analysis (RDA) showed that investigated factors together explained 37.8 - 44.7% and 29.9 - 42.6% of the essential/beneficial and non-essential elements variability, respectively, whereas salinity was one of the main factors determining the accumulation of a number of elements (Mg, S, Na, Li, Sr, Sb) by the macrophytes. A decrease in the essential element contents (K, P, N, Cu, Zn) was observed in both species of the macrophytes during the growing season. Environmental factors (salinity, growing period, and pH) were more significant than the element contents in water and the sediments for the essential/beneficial element accumulation by two species of the macrophytes. The element contents in the sediments to a greater extent determined non-essential element accumulation by P. australis than by S. pectinata. The study showed that the efficiency of using P. australis and S. pectinata for remediation of aquatic ecosystems contaminated by heavy metals should not decrease with a salinity increase. © 2020 Elsevier Masson SAS

Аннотация: The source of radioactive contamination of the Yenisei River floodplain, including contamination with actinides, is the Mining-and-Chemical combine (MCC), which has for many years been producing weapons-grade plutonium. Actinides have been detected not only in the soil and sediment of the river but also in the biomass of aquatic plants. The aim of our investigation was to assess the levels of actinides and other radionuclides in sediments and aquatic plants both near the MCC and at a considerable distance from it, down the Yenisei River. Investigations of the Yenisei River sediment samples revealed high activity concentrations of actinides (Pu isotopes and 241Am), which were 100 times higher than their global fallout levels. Sequential extraction of radionuclides from samples of sediments collected near the MCC showed that the amounts of extracted 241Am were the largest (up to 98% of initial activity). It was found that aquatic plants of the Yenisei River collected both near the MCC discharge site and at a distance up to 200 km downstream contained several actinide isotopes. The aquatic moss, Fontinalis antipyretica, was found to contain higher levels of radionuclides than Potamogeton lucens. Leaves of P. lucens contained higher levels of radionuclides, including 239Np, than stems. Sequential extraction of radionuclides from samples of aquatic plants showed that 239Np levels in exchangeable and adsorption fractions of P. lucens biomass were higher than in the respective fractions of F. antipyretica biomass. Аннотация: For systematic human Mars exploration, meeting crew safety requirements, it seems perspective to assemble into a spacecraft: an electrical rocket, a well-shielded long-term life support system, and a manipulator-robots operating in combined "presence effect" and "master-slave" mode. The electrical spacecraft would carry humans to the orbit of Mars, providing short distance (and low signal time delay) between operator and robot-manipulators, which are landed on the surface of the planet. Long-term hybrid biological and physical/chemical LSS could provide environment supporting human health and well being. Robot-manipulators operating in "presence effect" and "master-slave" mode exclude necessity of human landing on Martian surface decreasing the level of risk for crew. Since crewmen would not have direct contact with the Martian environment then the problem of mutual biological protection is essentially reduced. Lightweight robot-manipulators, without heavy life support systems and without the necessity of returning to the mother vessel, could be sent as scouts to different places on the planet surface, scanning the most interesting for exobiological research site. Some approximate estimations of electric spacecraft, long-term hybrid LSS, radiation protection and mission parameters are conducted and discussed. (C) 2002 COSPAR. Published by Elsevier Science Ltd. Аннотация: The lab experiments showed that specific activity of 241Am achieves 3280В±240 Bc/g with 241Am accumulation coefficient = 16600В±2200 l/kg. The chemical fractionation results confirmed that 241Am can be strongly fixed by elodea biomass. At the end of long-term experiment the part of 241Am strongly bonded by the biomass reached 27% of total 241Am content in biomass. The accumulation process proceeds with 241Am redistribution towards decreasing of the part of exchange and adsorbed fractions and increasing of the part of organic and mineral fractions. Thus, the 241Am part in organic fractions doubled during the experiment and in mineral fraction - grew more than 10 times as compared with initial 241Am distribution.

Аннотация: In the lab experiments (2000-2003) the biomass of Elodea canadelis (water thyme) and Fontinalis antipyretica (water moss) plants was used. The plants were exposed in filtered Enisei water with radionuclide additive in the form of 241Am(NO3)3 solution. The activity (A) was measured with gamma-spectrometer ("Canberra", USA) with ultra-pure germanium detector. The main A release in aqueous medium is observed after long stabilization stage caused by the plant necrosis. Elodea plants in 127 days lost up to 65% of initial A, and moss biomass - 35% in 373 days.
