Аннотация: The present study addresses the seasonal dynamics of productivity and species composition of the meadow and steppe vegetation communities in Khakassia, determined using the ground-based and satellite data of 2017. The MODIS/Terra satellite data were used to analyze the Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) and the Land Surface Water Index (LSWI). The NDVI and LSWI were found to be related to the productivity of the meadow and steppe vegetation. The NDVI increased as the portion of the mesophyte grasses in the grass canopy became larger. The LSWI was higher in the steppe communities, which had lower projective coverage, with spots of bare soil, than in the meadow communities, with their abundant vegetation. © Published under licence by IOP Publishing Ltd.

Аннотация: The problem of developing a technology for the removal or drastic reduction of NaCl from organic waste, including human exometabolites and plant waste and intended for disposal in closed agricultural cycles, is very relevant, especially for Northern regions with risky agriculture. Without its solution, it becomes almost impossible to create a long-term functioning ecosystem due to the danger of accumulation of NaCl in irrigation solutions and soil with subsequent poisoning of plants. It is obvious that the development of the technology for extracting NaCl is most rational to perform in combination with the technology for processing human exometabolites, since they are the main source of NaCl. © Published under licence by IOP Publishing Ltd.

Аннотация: Productivity values, sodium accumulation in aboveground biomass, and photosynthetic indices of watercress (Nasturtium officinale) leaves were investigated under conditions resembling artificial closed ecological systems (CES). The seedlings were grown on nutrient media with various NaCl concentrations (0.7, 1.4, and 1.8 g/L) for 7, 14, and 19 days after transferring them to saline solutions. The productivity of plants on the seventh day of their growth on saline media did not differ from that of control plants. The decrease in plant productivity was noted in all the treatments starting from the 14th day after transferring the plants to saline solutions. When NaCl concentration in the nutrient solution was raised from 0.7 to 1.8 g/L, a significant increase in relative Na+ content in plant tissues was observed, regardless of the duration of NaCl treatment. A substantial decrease in chlorophyll (a + b) to carotenoid content ratio was noted on the seventh and 14th days in plants grown at 1.8 g/L NaCl. In plants treated for 7 days with 0.7 and 1.4 g/L NaCl, the content of chlorophylls a and b and carotenoids was found to increase, which indicates the tolerance of N. officinale to CES conditions. The relative content of chlorophylls a and b in the light-harvesting chlorophyll (a + b) complex was independent of the extent of salinity. The maximum quantum yield of photosystem II reaction in N. officinale plants had typically high values (Y(II)(max) of 0.755 +/- 0.007). Using the Imaging Maxi version of the pulse amplitude-modulated (PAM) fluorometer, it was found that light curves for the effective quantum yield of photochemical and nonphotochemical fluorescence quenching (Y(II) and Y(NPQ), respectively) differed appreciably between the salt-treated and untreated plants in the case of long-term cultivation (19 days) at 0.7 and 1.4 g/L NaCl. The treatment with 1.8 g/L NaCl for the period from 14 to 19 days had no effect on light curves of Y(II) and Y(NPQ). It is argued that N. officinale can be used as a source of NaCl for humans under CES conditions.

Аннотация: The research on cellulose fiber-reinforced nanocomposites has increased by an unprecedented magnitude over the past few years due to its wide application range and low production cost. However, the incompatibility between cellulose and most thermoplastics has raised significant challenges in composite fabrication. This paper addresses the behavior of plasma-modified polyethylene (PE) reinforced with cellulose nanofibers extracted from isora plants (i.e., isora nanofibrils (INFs)). The crystallization kinetics of PE-INF composites were explained using the Avrami model. The effect of cellulose nanofillers on tuning the physiochemical properties of the nanocomposite was also explored in this work. The increase in mechanical properties was due to the uniform dispersion of fillers in the PE. The investigation on viscoelastic properties confirmed good filler-matrix interactions, facilitating the stress transfer.

Аннотация: The review considers probable ways to overcome the deficiency of eicosapentaenoic and docosahexaenoic acids in the human diet through the rational development of aquaculture. Currently, aquaculture is not a producer, but a consumer of polyunsaturated fatty acids, since it is based on feed, the main components of which are fishmeal and fish oil obtained from commercial catches. It is proposed to transform farmed fish from a consumer to producer of these polyunsaturated fatty acids. The source of production of eicosapentaenoic and docosahexaenoic acids in aquaculture can be their synthesis by fish from short-chain alpha-linolenic acid contained in the oil of terrestrial agricultural plants. Calculations of the threshold value of the content of eicosapentaenoic and docosahexaenoic acids in feed for salmon fish (Salmonidae) with partial replacement of fish oil with vegetable oil are presented. Another possible way to transform aquaculture into a producer of polyunsaturated fatty acids is to partially replace fishmeal in feed with flour from terrestrial invertebrates. Some species of insects and worms that are promising for aquaculture as objects for the production of feed meal are considered.

Аннотация: Long-term trends of artificial radionuclides, from 2003 to 2018, in two abundant species of macrophytes, shining pondweed, Potamogeton lucens, and water moss, Fontinalis antipyretica, have been analyzed to estimate the indicative reliability of these two species as biomonitors of radioactive contamination in a river system and to quantify the decrease in the content of artificial radionuclides in the Yenisei River. Time-dependent trends of artificial radionuclides in the biomass of these species were similar, resulting in estimates of effective half-lives for Mn-54, Co-58, Co-60, Zn-65, Cs-137, and Eu-152 similar for both species. Concentrations of artificial radionuclides in biomass of shining pondweed and water moss correlated with annual discharges of the radionuclides to the Yenisei at different levels of significance, and the strongest (R-2 0.7) positive correlation (p 0.05) was obtained for Co-60, Zn-65, and Eu-152. Concentrations of Co-60, Cs-137, and Eu-152 in water moss were 2-7.5 times higher than in shining pondweed, and considerable percentages of those isotopes were recorded in extracellular particulate matter, which was largely represented by epiphytic diatoms. Higher concentrations of artificial radionuclides in the biomass of water moss can be considered as an advantage of water moss as a monitor of radioactive contamination of the Yenisei, while shining pondweed is more useful for estimation of annual deposits of radionuclides in vegetation of the Yenisei and spatial transfer of radionuclides downstream of the discharge site. Despite differences in concentrations of artificial radionuclides, both species can be considered as reliable indicators of radioactive contamination of the river on a long-term scale.

Аннотация: The review is devoted to the study of the internal radiation regime in the canopies cultivated under controlled environmental conditions. The expediency of using canopies as an object of research for evaluating the photobiological efficiency of radiation in light culture conditions is justified. The appropriateness of light measurements in multi-tiered canopies is shown, taking into account the role of leaves of different tiers in the formation of an economically useful crop. The main requirements for light devices for their use in measuring artificial radiation in light culture conditions are considered, and a brief analysis of the existing instrument base for performing these studies is given. A number of examples show the complexity and ambiguity of the internal structure of the light field that is forming within canopies in light culture conditions. Conceptual approaches to the choice of spectral and energy characteristics of artificial irradiation for plant light culture are proposed and justified. The necessity of taking into account the light conditions of leaves of different tiers when choosing the spectral and energy characteristics of light sources for the cultivation of multi-tiered canopies is justified. Techniques, methods, and light sources used for additional intracanopy lighting are analysed. The efficiency of using side illumination of plant canopies and conditions for its implementation are considered. The advantages of the volume distribution of canopies on the most common multi-tiered lighting installations are discussed. Based on the presented mate- rial, we consider ways to improve methodological approaches for evaluating the photobiological effectiveness of artificial radiation in light culture conditions for canopies of cultivated plants, taking into account the features of their architectonics and internal radiation regime.

Аннотация: The efficacy of slow-release formulations of tribenuron-methyl (TBM) embedded in the matrix of degradable poly(3-hydroxybutyrate) blended with birch wood flour [polymer/wood flour/herbicide 50/30/20 wt.%] was compared with the efficacy of TBM as the active ingredient of the Mortira commercial formulation, which was applied as post-emergence spray to treat spring wheat cv. Novosibirskaya 15. The study was conducted in Central Siberia (in the environs of the city of Krasnoyarsk, Russia) from May to August 2020. The biological efficacy of the embedded TBM was 92.3%, which was considerably higher than the biological efficacy of the Mortira formulation used as the post-emergence spray (15.4%). The embedding of TBM into degradable blended matrix enabled long-duration functioning of this unstable herbicide in soil. The sensitivity of weed plants to TBM differed depending on the species. TBM was more effective against A. retroflexus and A. blitoides, which were killed at an earlier stage, than against C. album and G. aparine, whose percentage increased in the earlier stage and which were controlled by the herbicide less effectively and at later stages. On the plot treated with the embedded herbicide, the parameters of the wheat yield structure were the best, and the total yield was the highest: 3360 +/- 40 kg/ha versus 3250 +/- 50 kg/ha in the group of plants sprayed with the Mortira formulation. The grain produced in all groups was of high quality and was classified as Grade 1 food grain. The highest quality parameters (grain hectoliter mass, gluten, and protein contents) were obtained in the group of plants treated with the embedded herbicide. The study of the embedded TBM confirmed the high efficacy of the experimental formulation.

The possibility of deep purification of gas emitted from the reactor of physical-chemical processing of organic wastes is demonstrated. Wheat growing experiment on using the facility for oxidation of volatile organic compounds in a sealed chamber was performed. Аннотация: Bioassays based on aquatic plants are a convenient tool for studying the quality of bottom sediments. One of the stages in the development of a bioassay is the selection of optimal growth conditions for indicator plants in a model test system. Response of indicator physiological endpoints of Canadian waterweed (Elodea canadensis) to light flux density was investigated to determine optimal irradiance level in a “water - sediment” model system, proposed previously for contact bioassay of natural bulk bottom sediments. Based on the response of shoot and root growth (length and weight), and concentration and ratio of photosynthetic pigments (chl. a, chl. b, and carotenoids) of Elodea to the change of light flux density, no limitation or inhibition of growth and photosynthesis of Elodea was revealed at light flux density from 56 to 143 µmol quanta • m-2 • s-1. Hence, the level of irradiance within this range can be recommended for use in the experimental system proposed for bioassay of bulk bottom sediments using E. canadensis as an indicator. © Siberian Federal University. Аннотация: Accumulation of essential/beneficial and non-essential chemical elements by submerged (Stuckenia pectinata (L.) Borner) and emergent (Phragmites australis (Cav.) Trin. ex Steud.) rooted macrophytes in three water bodies was studied as dependent on water salinity (specific conductivity) and main environmental factors (temperature, pH of water, growing period, element contents in water and sediments). Inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometry (ICP - OES) was used for the element detection in the plants, sediments, and water. Multivariate statistics redundancy analysis (RDA) showed that investigated factors together explained 37.8 - 44.7% and 29.9 - 42.6% of the essential/beneficial and non-essential elements variability, respectively, whereas salinity was one of the main factors determining the accumulation of a number of elements (Mg, S, Na, Li, Sr, Sb) by the macrophytes. A decrease in the essential element contents (K, P, N, Cu, Zn) was observed in both species of the macrophytes during the growing season. Environmental factors (salinity, growing period, and pH) were more significant than the element contents in water and the sediments for the essential/beneficial element accumulation by two species of the macrophytes. The element contents in the sediments to a greater extent determined non-essential element accumulation by P. australis than by S. pectinata. The study showed that the efficiency of using P. australis and S. pectinata for remediation of aquatic ecosystems contaminated by heavy metals should not decrease with a salinity increase. © 2020 Elsevier Masson SAS

Аннотация: The herbicidal activity of long-acting formulations of metribuzin and tribenuron methyl herbicides embedded in granules prepared from a mixture of degradable poly(3-hydroxybutyrate) and birch wood flour was studied in laboratory-grown weeds of various species and in wheat Triticum aestivum and barley Hordeum vulgare stands infested by weeds. The constructed formulations effectively suppressed all species of weeds studied. The biological effectiveness of herbicide formulations toward intact plants in wheat and barley stands infested with weeds was close to 100%, which was significantly higher than the effect of their free forms. The more effective suppression of weeds by embedded herbicides was beneficial for the growth of crops whose aboveground biomass was 8-13 to 20% greater than that of the crops in the treatments with free herbicides. Embedded metribuzin and tribenuron methyl exhibit sustained and pronounced herbicidal activity and are effective for pre-emergence soil application for crops infested with weeds of various species.

Аннотация: Purpose The purpose of this study was to assess the long-term effects of gamma-radiation, including low-dose radiation, on growth parameters of onion (Allium cepa) seedling roots 6-10 days after irradiation. Materials and methods Onion seedlings were exposed to a Cs-137 gamma source at doses ranging from 0.1 to 10 grays (Gy). Responses of root and shoot length growth were studied 6 and 10 days after irradiation. Results Our results showed inhibition of the root and shoot length growth 6 days after exposure at all doses, including the low dose - 0.1 Gy. At a later point in time (day 10), root and shoot inhibition was only observed after irradiation at high doses (above 5 Gy), and that suggested the occurrence of cell repair after irradiation at low doses. The results indicated that the length of seedling roots was more sensitive to gamma-irradiation than the shoot length. Conclusion The results of the study suggested that short-term gamma-irradiation of onion seedlings (absorbed doses of 0.1-10 Gy) caused inhibition of plant growth 6 and 10 days after irradiation. The dose dependence of the onion root length was linear. The present study showed for the first time that short-term low-dose gamma-irradiation could induce long-term negative effects on plant growth.

Аннотация: The paper dwells upon the use of autochthonous microbial cinosis as a source of antagonistic strains for bioprotection of wheat against Fusarium in biotechnical life support systems (BT LSS). Six bacterial strains antagonistic to 9 phytopathogenic fungi Fusarium responsible for seedling blight of wheat in BT LSS were isolated from hydroponic solutions and artificial soils and subject to the genetic typing. Five strains represent bacteria g. Bacillus, one strain - Chryseobacterium. The 16S rRNA sequencing showed 94 to 100 % genetic affinity with typical cultures. All spore-forming strains-antagonists were capable of germinating and going through the whole development cycle In the presence of swelling wheat seeds. The isolates did not demonstrate antagonism to each other and can grow in a mixed culture. Spectra and levels of the antiobiotic activity of the antagonists, along with the Fusarium sensitivity to their antibiotic action, differed statistically (p 0.001). None of the antagonists was capable of suppressing the entire Fusarium spectrum detected in BT LSS individually. Аннотация: Successful incorporation of soil-like substrate (SLS) into biotechnical life support systems is often complicated by the necessity to maintain the balance between flows of mineral elements taken up from the substrate by growing plants and mineral elements added to the SLS as components of mineralized plant inedible biomass. An imbalance between these two flows can be caused by the addition of recalcitrant plant waste such as wheat straw. The purpose of this study was to determine whether the availability of essential nutrients to be taken up by the roots of the wheat plants grown on the SLS could be enhanced by supplementing the SLS with the products derived from wheat straw subjected to different levels of physicochemical mineralization in the aqueous solution of hydrogen peroxide. Different degrees of straw mineralization were achieved by using different ratios of the aqueous solution of hydrogen peroxide to straw. The study showed that supplementation of the SLS with insufficiently oxidized products of physicochemical mineralization of straw resulted in a decrease in the grain yields. The inhibitory effect of the straw subjected to physicochemical oxidation increased with a decrease in the degree to which the straw had been oxidized. Only supplementation with the straw mineralized to the highest possible degree did not inhibit plant growth and development, and the crop yield in that treatment was higher than in the other treatments. © 2020

Аннотация: Autoluminescent plants engineered to express a bacterial bioluminescence gene cluster in plastids have not been widely adopted because of low light output. We engineered tobacco plants with a fungal bioluminescence system that converts caffeic acid (present in all plants) into luciferin and report self-sustained luminescence that is visible to the naked eye. Our findings could underpin development of a suite of imaging tools for plants.
