Аннотация: The inhibition of bacterial luminescence has been used in testing industrial enterprises sewage. The toxicity of the sewage is less than the total toxicity of separate components due to neutralization of quinone products of polyphenol oxidation in the reactions with the other phenol components of sewage. Toxicity increase is due to their influence on the cell membrane. Studies of cell ultrastructure confirm this fact. The studied mechanism of the complex effect allowed a more accurate forecast of the ecological situation during the discharge of phenol compounds and metals. It also showed the necessity of taking into account the complex effect of sewage components on contaminant discharge into water reservoirs.

    Patterns of inhibition of bacterial bioluminescence in vitro by quinones and phenols - Components of sewage / N. S. Kudryasheva [et al.] // Biophysics. - 1994. - Vol. 39, Is. 3. - P. 441-451 . - ISSN 0006-3509
Аннотация: Quenching of bioluminescence of the bienzyme system bacterial luciferase-NAD В· H:FMN-oxidoreductase† † NADВ·H is reduced nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide and FMN is flavine manonucleotide. is considered in terms of the patterns of intermolecular transfer of an electron and hydrogen between donor (bioluminescent centre) and acceptor (compound to be analysed) taking into account the structure of the acceptor molecule. The link between the induction period of bioluminescence and the redox potential of the quinone-acceptor has been confirmed. It is shown that the induction period and the time of passage to the bioluminescence maximum in the presence of quinones are determined by the size of the aromatic and aliphatic fragments of the quinone molecule; the intensity of bioluminescence depends on the efficiency of the processes of intermolecular electron transfer (donor-acceptor) and the competition of the compound being analysed with aldehyde for the binding site on luciferase. Аннотация: Dynamics of active sludge microorganism activity in aerotanks under chemostat conditions has been studied. Dependence of microorganism catalase activity has been found to depend on residual substrate concentration in proportion to the biomass of microorganisms. Experimental data and field observations has formed the basis to develop a technique to evaluate in relative units the amount of the substrate consumed by biocenosis of the active sludge in the air tanks of purification facilities. Аннотация: Plants in experiments on "man-higher plants" closed ecosystem (CES) have been demonstrated to have inhibited growth and reduced productivity due to three basic factors: prolonged usage of a permanent nutrient solution introduction into the nutrient medium of intra-system gray water, and closure of the system. Gray water was detrimental to plants the longer the nutrient solution was used. However, higher plant growth was mostly affected by the gaseous composition of the CES atmosphere, through accumulation of volatile substances. В© 1997 COSPAR. Published by Elsevier Science Ltd.

    Direct utilization of human liquid wastes by plants in a closed ecosystem / G. M. Lisovsky [et al.] // Advances in Space Research. - 1997. - Vol. 20, Is. 10. - P1801-1804 . - ISSN 0273-1177

Аннотация: Model experiments in phytotrons have shown that urea is able to cover 70% of the demand in nitrogen of the conveyer cultivated wheat. At the same time wheat plants can directly utilize human liquid wastes. In this article by human liquid wastes the authors mean human urine only. In a long-term experiment on "man-higher plants" system with two crewmen, plants covered 63 m2, with wheat planted to - 39.6 m2. For 103 days, complete human urine (total amount - 210.7 1) wassupplied into the nutrient solution for wheat. In a month and a half NaCl supply into the nutrient solution stabilized at 0.9-1.65 g/l. This salination had no marked effect on wheat production. The experiment revealed the realistic feasibility to directly involve liquid wastes into the biological turnover of the life support system. The closure of the system, in terms of water, increased by 15.7% and the supply of nutrients for wheat plants into the system was decreased. Closedness of biological turnover of matter in a man-made "man - higher plants" ecological system might involve, among other processes, direct utilization of human liquid wastes by plants. The amount of urine comprises 15-20% of the total amount of water cycling within the system including water as part of food, household, hygiene and potable water necessary for man. What is more, it they contains most nitrogen-bearing compounds emitted by man, almost all of the NaCl and some other substances involved in the biological turnover. Human liquid wastes can be utilized either by preliminary physical-chemical treatment (evaporating or freezing out the water, finally oxidizing the organic matter, isolating the mineral components required for plants, etc.) and further involvement of the obtained products or by direct application into the nutrient solution for plants. The challenge of direct utilization is that plants have no need of Na+ and Cl-, and also the organic forms of nitrogen emitted by man cannot fully meet the demand of plants forthis element. Besides, hygienic and/or psychological reasons make it desirable to avoid direct use of liquid wastes in the nutrient solutions that would have direct contact with edible part of plants (tubers, roots, bulbs). Feasibility of direct utilization of liquid wastes by plants in a closed "man - higher plants" ecosystem has been experimentally studied on wheat - grain culture as a model plant with the edible part in the form of seeds spatially dissociated with the nutrient medium. The wheat covered 60-65% of the area under higher plants. The studies have been carried out in "Bios-3"experimental facility described in detail elsewhere (Lisovsky, 1979; Gitelson et al., 1989). Аннотация: Functional, regulatory and indicator features of microorganisms in development and functioning of the systems and sustaining stability of three man-made ecosystem types has been studied. 1) The functional (metabolic) feature was studied in aquatic ecosystems of biological treatment of sewage waters for the reducer component. 2) The regulatory feature of bacteria for plants (producer component) was studied in simple terrestrial systems "wheat plants-rhizospheric microorganisms - artificial soil" where the behavior of the system varied with activity of the microbial component. For example with atmospheric carbon dioxide content elevated microbes promote intensification of photosynthesis processes, without binding the carbon in the plant biomass. 3) The indicator feature for the humans (consumer component) was studied in Life Support Systems (LSS). High sensitivity of human microflora to system conditions allowed its use as an indicator of the state of both system components and the entire ecosystem. В© 2001 COSPAR. bioluminescence -- halides -- heavy atom -- inhibition -- activation
Аннотация: The effects of potassium halides KCl, KBr and KI on NADH:FMN-oxidoreductase-luciferase bioluminescent coupled enzyme system were studied. The influence of salt additions on bioluminescence intensity and bioluminescence light yield was investigated. The inhibition and activation parameters of the salts were calculated using their dependencies on concentration of the salts. The correlation between the inhibition of bioluminescence intensity and the halide mass was demonstrated: the inhibiting ability of the salts increases with the increase of atomic weight of the anions. The inhibition parameters increase and the activation parameters decrease, accordingly. (C) 2002 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.

Аннотация: Patterns of sulfate reduction were studied in water and sediments of Lake Shira, South Siberia, Russia. The lake was characterized by a high level of sulfate (91-116 mM). The concentration of hydrogen sulfide in the anoxic waters of the lake reached 0.6 mM. In summer the sulfate reduction rate in the water column, measured by radiometric technique, varied from 0.25 to 9.81 mumol sulfate l(-1) d(-1). There were two peaks of sulfate reduction activity: just below the chemocline and near the sediment surface. Sulfate reduction rate in the profundal silts ranged from 4.1 to 90.6 mumol l(-1) d(-1). The zone of the most active sulfate reduction was restricted to the surface sediment layers. The acceleration of sulfate reduction rate (up to 236 mumol l(-1) d(-1)) and the increase of density of viable sulfate reducers (up to 2x10(5) cells ml(-1)) were recorded in the littoral sediments adjacent to the mouth of the Son River and sewage discharge. It was apparently caused by the input of allochthonous organic substrates and also by a high environmental temperature. On an areal basis, sulfate reduction rate in the water was approximately 8 times higher than that in the profundal sediments. Sulfate reduction was the most important process of anaerobic oxidation of organic carbon in Lake Shira. In summer in the profundal zone of the lake, sulfate reducers were able to mineralize about 67% of the daily integrated primary production of phototrophic and chemotrophic organisms.

Аннотация: Studying material transformations and biotic cycling in artificial ecosystems (AES), we need to know the principles of biological adaptation of active organisms to change in the environment. Microorganisms in AES for water purification are the most active transforming organisms and consumers of the organic substances contained in wastes. Utilization of organic substances is directly connected with the energy fluxes used by AES. According to energy criteria, the energy fluxes used by a biological system tend to reach maximum values under stable conditions. Unutilized substrate concentration decreases as a result of biological adaptations. After a dramatic change in environmental factors, for example, after a sharp increase in the flow rate of organic substances, the biological system is not able to react quickly. The concentration of unutilized substrate increases and the energy flux used by the biological system decreases. The structure of the microbial community also changes, with a decrease in biological diversity. The efficiency of energy use by simple terrestrial ecosystems depends on the energetic intensity and interactions between plants and rhizospheric microorganisms. В© 2005 COSPAR. Аннотация: The content of a long-lived technogenic radionuclide 99Tc in the Yenisei within the territory of radioactive effluents of the Rosatom mining chemical combine (MCC) has been studied. In 2008-2009 the maximal 99Tc content in water was registered near the dumping site of the MCC and came to 33 mBq/l. According to analysis of filtered water samples, technetium in the Yenisei water is presented as pertechnetate ion (TcO 4). When moving away from the MCC downstream, the 99Tc content in water is decreased, which is caused both by dilution of waste water and by 99Tc accumulation by aquatic plants. The 99Tc content in the biomass of the aquatic plant Potamogeton lucens came to 82 15 Bq/kg, and the concentration factor (CF) to 8200, which is three times more than the maximal values of the CF of 99Tc by the plants in laboratory conditions (2700).
