Аннотация: The localization of the key photoreductive and oxidative processes and some stress-protective reactions within leaves of mesophytic C3 plants were investigated. The role of light in determining the profile of Rubisco, glutamate oxaloacetate transaminase, catalase, fumarase, and cytochrome-c-oxidase across spinach leaves was examined by exposing leaves to illumination on either the adaxial or abaxial leaf surfaces. Oxygen evolution in fresh paradermal leaf sections and CO2 gas exchange in whole leaves under adaxial or abaxial illumination was also examined. The results showed that the palisade mesophyll is responsible for the midday depression of photosynthesis in spinach leaves. The photosynthetic apparatus was more sensitive to the light environment than the respiratory apparatus. Additionally, examination of the paradermal leaf sections by optical microscopy allowed us to describe two new types of parenchyma in spinach-pirum mesophyll and pillow spongy mesophyll. A hypothesis that oxaloacetate may protect the upper leaf tissue from the destructive influence of active oxygen is presented. The application of mathematical modeling shows that the pattern of enzymatic distribution across leaves abides by the principle of maximal ecological utility. Light regulation of carbon metabolism across leaves is discussed. В© 2010 Springer-Verlag.

Аннотация: Triploid fish has become an important item of commercial aquaculture, but data on its fatty acid (FA) composition are still controversial, especially regarding essential polyunsaturated fatty acids, eicosapentaenoic acid (20:5n-3, EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (22:6n-3, DHA). We studied FA composition and content of diploid and triploid pink salmon Oncorhynchus gorbuscha, reared in aquaculture in a bay of the White Sea (Russia). FA composition, measured as percentages of total FA of triploids and immature diploid females significantly differed from that of mature diploid fish. Specifically, mature diploids had higher percentage of EPA and DHA in their muscle tissue (filets) compared to that of triploids and immature diploid females. Nevertheless, the contents of EPA and DHA per mass of the filets in diploid and triploid specimens were similar. Thus, no special efforts are needed to improve EPA and DHA contents in filets of triploids. © 2016 Elsevier Ltd

    Transfer of americium-241 from food and water to organs and tissues of the crucian carp * / T. Zotina [et al.] // Radioprotection. - 2011. - Vol. 46, Is. 6 SUPPL. - S69-S73, DOI 10.1051/radiopro/20116648s . - ISSN 0033-8451
Аннотация: The transfer of transuranium element americium-241 (241Am) from food and water to organs and tissues of freshwater fish (Carassius auratus gibelio, crucian carp) has been investigated in laboratory experiments. The fishes were fed with homogenized biomass of submerged macrophytes labeled with 241Am, through catheter. For the first two days after force-feeding, fishes excreted up to 80% of ingested americium, for four days - 98%. 241Am was registered in internal organs and tissues that had no direct contact with americium (liver, bones, muscles) as early as two days after the feeding and after eight days, when the digestive tract was depurated. Among internal organs, the highest activity concentration was recorded in the liver (up to 427 Bq/kg). Activity concentration in bones (19-31 Bq/kg) was several times higher than in muscles, indicating the affinity of americium to bone tissue. Assimilation of 241Am in organs and tissues of crucian carp from water occurred mainly via the digestive tract too. В© 2011 EDP Sciences.

Аннотация: Polyhydroxyalkanoate (PHA) sutures were implanted to test animals intramuscularly, and tissue reaction was investigated and compared with the reaction to silk and catgut. Tested monofilament sutures made of PHAs of two types polyhydroxybutyrate (PHB) and a copolymer of hydroxybutyrate and hydroxyvalerate (PHV) featured the strength necessary for the healing of muscle-fascial wounds. The reaction of tissues to polymeric implants was similar to their reaction to silk and was less pronounced than the reaction to catgut; it was expressed in a transient post-traumatic inflammation (up to four weeks) and the formation of a fibrous capsule less than 200 ?m thick, which became as thin as 4060 ?m after 16 weeks, in the course of reverse development. Macrophages and foreign-body giant cells with a high activity of acid phosphatase were actively involved in this process. PHB and PHB/PHV sutures implanted intramuscularly for an extended period (up to one year) did not cause any acute vascular reaction at the site of implantation or any adverse events, such as suppurative inflammation, necrosis, calcification of the fibrous capsule or malignant tumor formation. No statistically significant differences were revealed in the tissue response to polymer sutures of the two types. Capsules around silk and catgut sutures did not become significantly thinner.

Аннотация: Tissue reaction to implantation of polymeric microparticles from resorbable polymer (polyhydroxybutyrate) is characterized by slight inflammatory reaction and pronounced progressive macrophage infiltration with the presence of mono-and multinuclear foreign body giant cells resorbing the polymeric matrix. No fibrous capsules were formed around the polymeric microparticles; neither necrosis nor other adverse morphological changes and tissue transformation in response to implantation of the PHB microparticles were recorded. The results indicate good prospects of using polyhydroxybutyrate for the construction of long-acting dosage forms as microparticles for intramuscular injection. Аннотация: Currently, the patients with purulent wounds account for about 40% of the patients of surgical profilt. Since the treatment of septic wounds under the bandage remains the main method, as it is the most convenient and economically beneficial, but not effective enough, the development of new advanced coatings possessing simultaneously by multiple properties, is considered to be relevant. In the process of wound healing a physician faces with many problems including the issue of the selection option of a wound dressing, as they differ significantly in their design and properties. A disadvantage of many wound dressings for wound care is the adherence to wound. This results in the regenerating tissue injury and the dressings become sore. Many of the positive properties of dressings reduced as a result of damage caused by daily dressings. In recent years the biocompatible materials for injuries and wounds contribute to more effective healing and regeneration. In this regard, the paper presents the main types of current wound dressings used in the treatment of purulent wounds, their properties, indications and methods of applicatio.

Аннотация: In cold smoked species of genus Coregonus, identified by molecular genetic analysis, contents of fatty acids and heavy metals and arsenic were measured. The highest content of sum of long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acids of omega-3 family (LC-PUFA), namely eicosapentaenoic (EPA) and docosahexaenoic (DHA) fatty acids, 6.53 +/- 0.78 mg g(-1) wet weight, was characteristic of tugun Coregonus tugun. This is the first quantitative estimation (mg LC-PUFA per g of product) of the nutritive value of smoked fish. Thus, to obtain a daily personal doze of EPA + DHA of 1 g, recommended for prevention of cardiovascular diseases, one needs to consume 153 g of the smoked tugun. Metals contents did not exceed standards for fish meat except Pb in least cisco Coregonus sardinella. Accordingly, values of hazard quotients, which estimate benefit-risk ratio of fish intake, indicate that most of the smoked fish species are safe product for human nutrition, except least cisco regarding Pb content.

Аннотация: Chronic experiments on mature Wistar rats studied the biological properties of suture threads from two types of polyoxyalkanoates (POA), such as polyoxybutyrate (POB) and the copolymer of POB and polyoxyvalerate (POV) (POB/POV) as compared to the conventional surgical material (silk and catgut). The physiological and biochemical parameters that reflect the status of the animals, including their behavior, height and development, the weight of the body and viscera, the morphology of peripheral blood, the biochemical parameters of blood, the activity of some enzymes, as well as histological findings of the viscera, and lymphoid tissue responses were assessed. POA was found to produce no negative effect on the physiological, biochemical, and functional characteristics of the animals irrespective of the duration of contact with the internal medium of the body and of the chemical composition of a material.

Аннотация: Seasonal variations of fatty acid contents in muscle tissue of one of the main food fish species in Siberian rivers, grayling, Thymallus arcticus, were studied over 3 years. Under a comparatively low range of water temperature variations, spawning appeared to be the main cause of seasonal changes in contents of quantitatively prominent and essential fatty acids in fish filets. In general, fish accumulated essential polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA), such as eicosapentaenoic (EPA) and docosahexaenoic (DHA), in their muscle tissue before reproductive seasons and then the PUFA seemed to be transferred into gonads during their formation. Hard roe of Siberian grayling had 3-4 times higher PUFA contents, than had that of the muscle tissue. The fish species, T. arcticus, was found to be a valuable source of the essential PUFA, including EPA and DHA, for human diet. В© 2007 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Аннотация: The paper presents the results of biomedical investigations of sutures made of polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHAs) of two types (poly-3-hydroxybutyrate (PHB) and poly-3-hydroxybutyrate-co-poly-3-hydroxyvalerate (PHB/PHV)), synthesized by the bacteria Ralstonia eutropha B 5786 in the experiment on test animals in vivo, in comparison with silk and catgut sutures. PHB and PHB/PHV (PHBV) implants produced no adverse effect on physiological, biochemical and functional parameters of the animals during the post-surgery period. The tested PHA sutures featured the necessary strength throughout the healing period of the muscle-fascial cuts. The reaction of tissues to the implantation of PHB and PHB/PHV fibers fitted into the usual scheme characteristic of the wound process and of the reaction to a foreign-body invasion. This reaction and the reaction of tissues to silk had the similar nature and period of inflammation, but it was much less pronounced than the reaction to catgut. The tissue response to the implantation of PHAs consisted in a short-duration (up to 2 weeks) post-traumatic inflammation and the formation of a fibrous capsule less than 200 ?m thick during weeks 4-8, which in 4-6 months was reduced to 40-60 ?m in the course of reverse development. There were no adverse changes, such as suppurative inflammation, necrosis, calcification, and malignization of the cicatrice, at the site of implantation of PHA filaments, unlike in the cases with silk and catgut. In the case of PHA implantation there was a typical prolonged (throughout the post-surgery monitoring period) pronounced macrophagal stage with a large number of macrophages present. The macrophages were of the phagocytic type and multinucleate giant foreign cells, with a high activity of acid phosphomonoesterase that correlated with the activity of the enzyme in blood. Throughout the period of monitoring no differences in the tissue response to the implantation of the polymer filaments of two PHA types were recorded. В© 2003 Elsevier Science B.V. Аннотация: Additional integral and kinetic parameters of induction curves have been introduced on the basis of analysis of currently employed parameters of slow induction of fluorescence (SIF) for a more complete quantitative description of SIF changes during ontogenesis of higher plant leaves. High sensitivity of the additional parameters to the age state of leaf tissue as compared with previously employed parameters is demonstrated on the example of cucumber leaves (Cucumis sativus L.). Analysis of the relationship between the photosynthetic rate and SIF parameters of separate cucumber leaf disks revealed the presence of a high positive correlation between the photosynthetic rate and the greatest possible average decline in fluorescence intensity during the inductive period for mature regions of the leaf and regions starting to senesce (the correlation coeffcient attained values of 0.95), which indicates the possibility of using the given SIF parameter in further elaboration of methods for estimation of chloroplast photosynthetic activity at the level of the higher plant leaf.

polyhydroxybutyrate -- polycaprolactone -- biopolymers -- polyesters -- porosity -- co-soluble porogen -- camphor
Аннотация: Porous films have been prepared from degradable polymers-poly-3-hydroxybutyrate (PHB), poly-epsilon-caprolactone (PCL) and a blend of these polymers (1:3)-by adding porogen (camphor) to the polymer solution at 10%, 30% or 50% of the total mass of the polymer and porogen, and leaching it out afterwards. After the rinse, camphor content in films decreased to about 0.025%. The structure, physical/mechanical and biological properties of the films were investigated as dependent on their composition and porosity, which varied depending on the amount of camphor added. The surface of PHB films was porous, the PCL films were relatively smooth, and the PHB/PCL films had an intermediate structure. The addition of camphor increased the thickness (from 35 to 45 mu m, from 40 to 80 mu m and from 20 to 65 mu m for PHB, PCL and PHB/PCL, respectively) and porosity (from 4.2(+/- 3.6)% to 50.0(+/- 12.8)%, from 6.4(+/- 5.5)% to 54.5(+/- 6.0)% and from 4.9(+/- 4.8)% to 51.5(+/- 5.8)%, respectively) of the films. The introduction (and removal) of 10% camphor into the PHB and PHB/PCL films led to an approximately twofold increase in the polar component of the free surface energy (from 5.4 +/- 0.38 to 11.8 +/- 1.33 and from 2.7 +/- 0.13 to 5.2 +/- 0.09 mN/m, respectively) but in other cases, on the contrary, a decrease in this indicator was registered. The increase of camphor addition from 0% to 50% gradually impaired mechanical properties of the films: so, Young's modulus decreased from 3.6 to 1.8 GPa, from 0.30 to 0.12 GPa and from 0.50 to 0.20 GPa for PHB, PCL and PHB/PCL, respectively. At the same time, the water vapor transmission rate considerably increased from 197.37 +/- 23.62 to 934.03 +/- 114.34 g/m(2)/d for PHB films; from 1027.99 +/- 154.10 to 7014.62 +/- 280.81 g/m(2)/d for PCL films; and from 715.47 +/- 50.08 to 4239.09 +/- 275.54 g/m(2)/d for PHB/PCL films. Results of biocompatibility testing in the culture of NIH 3T3 mouse fibroblast cells showed that for the most of experimental samples cell adhesion and proliferation were comparable or superior to the corresponding parameters on the initial nonporous films. The best results were obtained for PHB films where at Day 3 of the experiment the registered cell density for experimental samples arrived at 2.66(+/- 0.26) x 10(5) cells/cm(2) versus 1.29(+/- 0.33) x 10(5) cells/cm(2) in the control. So, the proposed method can be used to construct highly porous cell scaffolds for cellular engineering.
