Аннотация: The circadian rhythm of grazing of microalgae by a laboratory culture of Ceriodaphnia quadrangula under continuous illumination was studied by continuous registration of chlorophyll fluorescence at the outlet of a flow-through cultivator. A culture of green alga Chlorella vulgaris was used as a feed. The data obtained were treated by the statistical spectral analysis. It was found that animals preliminarily grown under a 12 h light : 12 h dark regime and transferred to constant light showed two maxima in the circadian rhythm of grazing with periods of 0.7 and 1.1 h. Animals preliminarily grown under constant light showed no circadian rhythm of grazing. It was concluded that the circadian rhythm of grazing of C. quadrangula has endogenous nature and can change according to light conditions.

Аннотация: A one-dimensional ecological model of the meromictic brackish Lake Shira (Russia, Khakasia) was developed. The model incorporates state-of-the-art knowledge about the functioning of the lake ecosystem using the most recent field observations and ideas from PCLake, a general ecosystem model of shallow freshwater lakes. The model of Lake Shira presented here takes into account the vertical dynamics of biomasses of the main species of algae, zooplankton and microbial community, as well as the dynamics of oxygen, detritus, nutrients and hydrogen sulphide from spring to autumn. Solar radiation, temperature and diffusion are modelled using real meteorological data. The parameters of the model were calibrated to the field data, after applying different methods of sensitivity analysis to the model. The resulting patterns of phytoplankton and nutrients dynamics show a good qualitative and quantitative agreement with the field observations during the whole summer season. Results are less satisfactory with respect to the vertical distribution of zooplankton biomass. We hypothesize that this is due to the fact that the current model does not take the sex and age structure of zooplankton into account. The dynamics of oxygen, hydrogen sulphide and the modelled positions of the chemocline and thermocline are again in good agreement with field data. This resemblance confirms the validity of the approach we took in the model regarding the main physical, chemical and ecological processes. This general model opens the way for checking various hypotheses on the functioning of the Lake Shira ecosystem in future investigations and for analysing options for management of this economically important lake. competition -- metabolite interaction -- principle of competitive exclusion
Аннотация: This paper presents a mathematical model of interactions between two herbivorous invertebrates (ciliate Paramecium caudatum and rotifer Brachionus plicatilis) and two planktonic algae (Chlorella vulgaris and Scenedesmus quadricauda) spatially segregated in two compartments of a chemostat - type experimental microcosm system. The model mimics a "producer-consumer" aquatic biotic cycle, describing the dynamics of the mixed culture of ciliates and rotifers, as "consumer" compartment, feeding on the mixed algal culture, as "producer" compartment, under N-limiting conditions. We experimentally found that metabolites of the alga Scenedesmus produce an adverse effect on the reproduction of ciliate Paramecium. Taking this effect into account improved the behavior of the model, the results of which came into qualitative agreement with the experimental results. Both our experimental and modeling approaches demonstrated that, even in conditions of a spatially - segregated "producer-consumer" biotic cycle, species coexistence is impossible either in the mixed algal culture or in the mixed invertebrate culture. Scenedesmus excluded Chlorella, whereas Brachionus excluded Paramecium.

Phytoflagellates -- Meromictic lake -- Simulation modeling -- Lake Shira
Аннотация: Using mathematical modeling methods, the work investigates possible existence of a phytoflagellate population in the ecosystem of a stratified lake (Lake Shira, Khakasia, Russia). Until this study was carried out, no phytoflagellate population had been detected in the lake, although there had been indirect evidence of the possible presence of a cryptomonad population in this water body. To answer the question if this population may be present in this water body, as the first step of investigation, a mathematical model was developed describing the microorganism biomass dynamics and phytoflagellate relationship with the lake food web. The calculations showed that cryptophytic algae were abundant in the water column layers above the lake chemocline at the beginning of summer but showed low biomass concentrations during other periods of time. In the summer following the construction of the model, samples were collected from Lake Shira, as the next step of the study. A cryptophytic algae population was found in the water column, and the pattern of its distribution in the ecosystem was similar to that predicted by the model. In addition to that, we studied theoretically possible reasons for the early summer development of the population in the deep water layers and found that it was the result of the mixotrophic feeding strategy of cryptomonads and trophic interactions in the food web. The study shows that preliminary modeling of the locational and temporal distribution of populations whose presence in the ecosystem is only suggested by indirect evidence may be useful as a tool for searching for the species in natural ecosystems and as an approach enabling a more accurate description of the food web structure of a water body. Аннотация: The brightness spectra of the Krasnoyarsk and Dnepr reservoir systems are presented for various periods of their development, from the beginning of their filling to the final stage of their formation. The curves of the surface distribution of chlorophyll a, which were remotely obtained from the brightness coefficient spectra, are found to be monotonic when diatomaceous, green protococcus, and dinophyte algae dominate in the phytoplankton. In the presence of blue-green algae, the curve of the distribution of phytoplankton on the surface is essentially irregular. The irregularities range from tens to hundreds of meters with sharp gradients of the phytoplankton concentration. The negative values of the VI color index change for positive ones when the concentration of chlorophyll a of the phytoplankton in the subsurface layer Cchl > 250-270 mg/m3. This is associated with the change in the species composition of the phytoplankton from the dominating diatom forms to bluegreen algae. Copyright В© 2005 by Pleiades Publishing, Inc.

Аннотация: The effect of ambient temperature on the composition of intracellular fatty acids and the release of free fatty acids (FFA) into a medium by cyanobacterium Spirulina platensis and eukaryotic microalgae, Chlorella vulgaris and Botryococcus braunii, was studied using their batch cultures. It was found that all the species studied, regardless of their taxonomic status, responded to the temperature regime by similar changes in their intracellular fatty acid composition: the relative content of more unsaturated fatty acids decreased with the elevation of temperature. At the same time, in the prokaryote, this temperature shift blocked, first of all, the elongation of 16:0 to 18:0 and then their further desaturation. In eukaryotes, the change in the desaturation of dienoic to trienoic fatty acids was the most pronounced process. The ratio of dienoic to trienoic fatty acids remained almost unchanged in S. platensis. The relative content of extracellular unsaturated FFA increased in the prokaryotic organism S. platensis at a higher temperature. But no significant changes in the composition of extracellular unsaturated FFA were detected in eukaryotic algae upon temperature elevation.

Аннотация: In this work we experimentally estimated the capacities of the key components of the Yenisei River (Russia): particulate suspended matter (seston), diatom microalgae, and submerged macrophytes for accumulating Am-241 from water. In our experiments large particles of seston (>8 mu m), comparable in size with diatoms, took up most of americium from water. The accumulation of americium by isolated diatom algae (Asterionella formosa and Diatoma vulgare) was lower than by total seston. The concentration factors (CFs) of Am-241 for seston of the Yenisei River in our experiments were (2.8-6.9).10(5); for diatoms -(1.5-4.2)-10(4). The Us for aquatic plant Elodea canadensis were within the same order of magnitude as those for diatoms. Activity concentration and CFs of Am-241 were nearly the same in experiments under dark and light conditions. This is indicative of an energy independent mechanism of americium uptake from the water by diatoms and submerged macrophytes. (C) 2009 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

paleolimnology -- diatom algae -- meromictic lake -- sedimentation -- Cyclotella -- choctawhatcheeana -- Aulacoseira valida -- Aulacoseira ambigua
Аннотация: Lake Shira as a meromictic lake is object of interest for paleolimnological studies. In May 2011 core samples were collected from the bottom of Lake Shira and the species composition of diatom algae, which serve as bioindicators of the state of the lake, were studied. In addition, in 2012, seasonal water samples and material from sediment traps were collected and the species composition of diatoms in them was analyzed. The results of the analysis showed that the lake, like in previous years of research, was dominated by Cyclotella choctawhatcheeana Prasad. Diatoms were found twice in the studied core above the white carbonate layers and were absent in other layers. The species living in the lake at present were observed down to the first white carbonate layer, including the predominant Cyclotella choctawhatcheeana. This fact presumably proves the consistency of the species composition of diatoms and the overall stable condition of the lake since 1946 (Rogozin et al., 2005). Down to the second white carbonate layer, the dominant species were Aulcosira valida (Grunow) Krammer and Aulcosira italica (Grunow) Simonsen. Nitzchia sigmodea (Nitzsch) W. Smith and Fragilaria construens var. venter (Ehrenberg) Grunow were also observed at these depths, dating approximately to 1655-1690. These are freshwater species that belong to the diatoms of arctic, alpine, and temperate latitudes, which develop in shallow waters under moderate temperature conditions. This fact suggests that Lake Shira was less salty in the middle and end of the 17th century than today.

Аннотация: The study of the composition of fatty acid markers of tadpoles of cohabiting amphibian species for the first time revealed differences in their diets: the moor frog Rana arvalis prefers bacteria not associated with plant detritus, whereas the diet of the common spadefoot Pelobates fuscus is based on cyanobacteria, green algae, diatoms, and possibly higher plants. Major differences in the fatty acid composition are determined by the difference in the percentage of eicosapentaenoic and myristic acids.

Аннотация: Studies were conducted to investigate the antibiotic resistance of freshwater, halophile and moderate halotolerant bacteria isolated from the nearshore part of Shira lake, which is affected by the activity of a health resort, and from the central part of the lake in the summer (June to August) of 1999. It has been shown that the allochthonous microflora, which is brought into the lake with the resort effluent in mid-summer, is the anthropogenic factor contributing to an increase in the number of freshwater bacteria that feature multiple antibiotic resistance in the central part of the lake. It has been found that resistance to ampicillin of freshwater and halophile heterotrophic bacteria is related to the increase in the biomass of blue-green and green algae in the central part of Shira lake between mid-July and the end of August. A mathematical model has been constructed to describe the dynamics of the antibiotic resistance of heterotrophic bacteria in the close-to-resort and the central parts of Shira lake under natural and anthropogenic impacts.

Аннотация: The study of the trophic relationships of aquatic animals requires correct estimates of their diets. We compared the quantitative fatty acid signature analysis (QFASA) and the isotope?mixing model IsoError, based on the compound?specific isotope analysis of fatty acids (CSIA?FA), which are potentially effective models for quantitative diet estimations. In a 21?day experiment, Daphnia was fed a mixture of two food items, Chlorella and Cryptomonas, which were supplied in nearly equal proportions. The percentages and isotope values of the FAs of the algal species and Daphnia were measured. The IsoError based on CSIA?FA gave an estimation of algae consumption using only one FA, 18:3n?3. According to this model, the proportion of consumption of Chlorella decreased while the proportion of consumption of Cryptomonas increased during the experiment. The QFASA model was used for two FA subsets—the extended?dietary subset, which included sixteen FAs, and the dietary one, which included nine FAs. According to both subsets, the portion of consumed Chlorella decreased from Day 5 to 10 and then increased at Day 21. The comparison of the two model approaches showed that the QFASA model is a more reliable method to determine the contribution of different food sources to the diet of zooplankton than the CSIA?based mixing model. © 2021 by the authors. Аннотация: 1. We studied variation in the composition of fatty acids in the seston of a small freshwater reservoir with changes in phytoplankton composition during four growth seasons. We focused on the dynamics of the omega3 fatty acids because of their potential importance for zooplankton nutrition. 2. Total diatoms were related to the 20:5omega3 fatty acid (eicosapentaenoic, EPA) content in seston. Among two dominant diatom genera, Cyclotella was not associated with EPA content. In contrast, there was a significant correlation between Stephanodiscus and the percentage contribution and content of EPA throughout the study. Hence, freshwater diatoms can differ strongly in content of the essential EPA. 3. We considered abundant cyanobacteria as a potential source of 18:3omega3 fatty acid (linolenic, ALA) to aquatic food webs. Among four dominant cyanobacteria species, two (Anabaena flos-aquae and Planktothrix agardhii) showed significant correlation with the ALA content of the seston, while the other two (Aphanizomenon flos-aquae and Microcystis aeruginosa) did not. 4. Dinophyta had a relatively high level of 22:6omega3 (docosahexaenoic, DHA) for freshwater species and can be also a source of EPA to aquatic food webs. 5. Our results show that various species of diatoms as well as cyanobacteria can be of contrasting nutritional value for zooplankton because of their different content of the essential PUFAs. Diatoms, which are low in EPA, could not be considered as a valuable food, while some field populations of cyanobacteria might be valuable sources of essential ALA.

Аннотация: We studied species composition, density, biomass and production of larvae of the family Ceratopogonidae in two saline rivers (Volgograd region, Russia). Ceratopoponids make up an important part of macroinvertebrate community in these rivers. Average monthly production (dry weight) of ceratopogonid larvae in the rivers was 3.5-4.8 g m -2 month -1 in May and ?0.9 g m -2 month -1 in August. For the first time, feeding spectra of ceratopogonid larvae, Palpomyia schmidti Goetghebuer, 1934, was studied using fatty acid analyses. The larvae of P. schmidti appeared to selectively consume diatoms and other algae and to avoid bacteria and decomposed dead organic matter (detritus) of low nutritive quality. © CSIRO.
