Soil organic matter -- Continual model of soil -- Soil formation
Аннотация: The study proposes a model of transformation and decomposition of soil organic matter, based on using the rate of matter transformation as a continual scale of its transformation degree. The model is represented by one partial derivative differential equation that has an analytical solution. This model has only two adjustable parameters, while the number of experimentally determined parameters depends on how detailed the description of the plant litter is supposed to be. The model has been tested, and model parameters have been evaluated by comparing model predictions with the literature data on the stock of soil organic matter in different types of ecosystems. carbon monoxide -- bacterial growth -- culture medium -- nonhuman
Аннотация: The growth of the carboxydobacterium Seliberia carboxydohydrogena Z-1062 was studied at a different concentration of mineral elements under the conditions of continuous turbidostat cultivation. The chemical composition of the bacterium was determined and the dynamics of its specific growth rate and the intracellular content of mineral elements were studied when the concentration of these elements was changed in the growth medium. The synthesis of 1 g of biomass by this strain required: N, 120 mg; P, 23 mg; S, 5.5 mg; K, 1.5 mg; Mg, 3.5 mg. Changes in the residual concentrations of the elements within a broad range had no effect on the specific rate of the carboxydobacterial growth and chemical composition.

A low-cost underwater particle tracking velocimetry system for measuring in situ particle flux and sedimentation rate in low-turbulence environments / S. Simoncelli [et al.] // Limnol. Oceanogr. Methods. - 2019, DOI 10.1002/lom3.10341 . - Article in press. - ISSN 1541-5856
Аннотация: We describe a low-cost three-dimensional underwater particle tracking velocimetry system to directly measure particle settling rate and flux in low-turbulence aquatic environments. The system consists of two waterproof cameras that acquire stereoscopic videos of sinking particles at 48 frames s?1 over a tunable sampling volume of about 45 ? 25 ? 24 cm. A dedicated software package has been developed to allow evaluation of particle velocities, concentration and flux, but also of morphometric parameters such as particle area, sinking angle, shape irregularity, and density. Our method offers several advantages over traditional approaches, like sediment trap or expensive in situ camera systems: (1) it does not require beforehand particle collection and handling; (2) it is not subjected to sediment trap biases from turbulence, horizontal advection, or presence of swimmers, that may alter particulate load and flux; (3) the camera system enables faster data processing and flux computation at higher spatial resolution; (4) apart from the particle settling rates, the particle size distribution, and morphology is determined. We tested the camera system in Lake Stechlin (Germany) in low turbulence and mean flow, and analyzed the morphological properties and settling rates of particles to determine their sinking behavior. The particle flux assessed from conventional sediment trap measurements agreed well with that determined by our system. By this, the low-cost approach demonstrated its reliability in low turbulence environments and a strong potential to provide new insights into particulate carbon transport in aquatic systems. Extension of the method to more turbulent and advective conditions is also discussed. © 2019 The Authors. Аннотация: A mathematical model concerning the interaction of plants and rhizospheric microorganisms on complete mineral medium and under nitrogen limitation has been constructed. The model takes into account the closeness of plants and microorganisms in terms of the matter released by the plant and consumed by the microorganisms. The effect of rhizospheric microorganisms on plant growth with normal carbon dioxide and complete mineral medium has been demonstrated. Plants interacting with microorganisms have a greater biomass than plants growing without microorganisms. Wheat growth stimulation by metabolites of rhizospheric microorganisms under laboratory conditions on artificial soil has been experimentally demonstrated (Pechurkin, 1997). Under nitrogen limitation , the biomass of plants, with or without microorganisms, is identical, and is substantially reduced as compared with the medium with standard nitrogen. В© 1999 COSPAR. Аннотация: A mathematical model describing the interaction of plants and rhizospheric microorganisms on complete mineral medium at a higher CO2 level in the atmosphere was constructed. The positive effect of CO2-enrichment on the system plant - rhizospheric microorganisms was shown. The effect of rhizospheric microorganisms on plant growth at normal and high level of carbon dioxide was demonstrated. It was shown that the biomass of plant in the system is smaller than the biomass of plant growing without microorganisms. It was experimentally demonstrated that a simple ecosystem wheat - Pseudomonas putida - artificial soil develops and functions differently than its individual constituents in the case of a wheat-artificial soil system. With unlimited nutrition and a higher CO2 level (0.06%), plants with roots inoculated with microorganisms have a smaller biomass than plants that were not inoculated with microorganisms.

Аннотация: Remote sensing applications have greatly enhanced ability to monitor and manage in the areas of forestry. Accurate measurements of regional and global scale vegetation dynamics (phenology) are required to improve models and understanding of inter-annual variability in terrestrial ecosystem carbon exchange and climate-biosphere interactions. Study of vegetation phenology is required for understanding of variability in ecosystem. In this paper, monitoring of vegetation dynamics using time series of satellite data is presented. Vegetation variability (vegetation rate) in different topoclimatic areas is investigated. Original software using IDL interactive language for processing of satellite long-term data series was developed. To investigate growth dynamics vegetation rate inferred from remote sensing was used. All estimations based on annual time series of Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) imagery. Vegetation rate for Enhanced Vegetation Index (EVI) and Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) was calculated using MODIS data. The time series covers spring seasons of each of 9 years, from 2000 to 2008. Comparison of EVI and NDVI derived growth rates has shown that NDVI derived rates reveal spatial structure better. Using long-term data of vegetation rates variance was estimated that helps to reveal areas with anomalous growth rate. Such estimation shows sensitivity degree of different areas to different topoclimatic conditions. Woods of heights depend on spatial topoclimatic variability unlike woods of lowlands. Principal components analysis shows vegetation with different rate conditions. Also it reveals vegetation of same type in areas with different conditions. It was demonstrated that using of methods for estimating the dynamic state of vegetation based on remote sensing data enables successful monitoring of vegetation phenology. В© 2011 COSPAR. Amino acids -- Epilithic microalgae and cyanobacteria -- Nutritive quality -- River ecosystem -- Zoobenthos
Аннотация: We studied amino acid (AA) composition of epilithic biofilms and zoobenthos near the shore at a middle section of the Yenisei River (Siberia, Russia). We hypothesised that there was an imbalance between the composition and content of amino acids in the biofilm and its consumers, the zoobenthos, as well as between those in the zoobenthos and fish. Based on monthly sampling from 2007 to 2010, there was seasonal variation in AA profiles in the epilithic biofilms, probably caused by the succession of microalgal and cyanobacterial species. Overall, there was an imbalance in the percentage of the essential amino acids (lysine and histidine) between benthic animals and their food (the epilithic biofilm), which suggests that benthic animals may be limited by food quality. Moreover, the zoobenthos had a significantly higher content of AA, relative to carbon, than the biofilm. Based on sampling in 2012, there was an imbalance between the AA profiles of zoobenthos and that of their main consumer, the Siberian grayling (Thymallus arcticus), particularly in the percentages of two essential amino acids, lysine and leucine. In terms of overall content of essential amino acids, the nutritional value to fish of gammarids, which have recently invaded the river, was significantly lower than that of indigenous taxa, trichopteran and chironomid larvae. Аннотация: The flow of long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) of the omega-3 family, namely, eicosapentaenoic acid (20:5n-3, EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (22:6n-3, DHA), exported by amphibian metamorphs from water to terrestrial ecosystems in the Medveditsa River floodplain, was quantified for the first time. The total biomass export by three amphibian species (Pelobates fuscus, Bombina bombina, and Pelophylax ridibundus) per unit area of the lake surface was 0.594 g/m(2) per year (as a mean for 2 years). The biomass flow per unit area of land was 0.726 g/ha per year (0.302 g/ha per year for organic carbon) in 2015-2016. The average annual total removal of EPA + DHA by amphibians from the floodplain lake was 1.47 mg/m(2) of water surface area. Due to the high content of EPA and DHA in biomass, amphibians are potentially a valuable food for terrestrial predators having no access to other sources of essential PUFAs.

Аннотация: This work concerns the model of a biological life support system consisting of higher plants, a unit of "biological combustion", a physicochemical reactor, and 1/30 of a human. The cycling of the main biogenic elements of the system, water, and carbon dioxide was closed to a high degree (more than 95%). Experimental-theoretical analysis of the cycling processes in the system was based on the calculations of mass exchange rates dynamics and some stoichiometric equations. The model was designed for the study of mechanisms of material transformation and the directions of mass exchange processes in the artificial ecosystems. Copyright В© 2003 SAE International.

Аннотация: This study was performed to investigate water and gas exchange in the experimental model of a closed ecological system (CES) intended for an estimated portion of a human in the long-duration (several-month) experiment. The diversity of the vegetable conveyor in the system was increased. Human wastes were involved in mass exchange processes, and human respiratory function was periodically connected to the experimental model of a CES. The experimental model of a CES was used to quantify regeneration of the gaseous atmosphere with oxygen and carbon dioxide loops by linking the photosynthesizing compartment with the heterotrophic compartment (soil-like substrate) and by the periodic connection of the human respiratory function. Under the preset light and temperature conditions, atmospheric CO2 concentration in the CES model intended for a portion of a human was maintained at a level that neither limited photosynthetic processes nor was harmful to humans (800–2000 ppm) during the 154-day experiment. At the same time, O2 concentration did not either drop below 20.8% or rise above 22.6%. The amount of the evapotranspiration water collected in the system could satisfy 50% of the daily water requirement of a human (with all the water used and excreted by the human being processed and used to irrigate plants). The evapotranspiration water did not need to be additionally purified before being used by humans. Thus, in the experimental model of the closed ecological system, human oxygen and food requirements (per 0.05 portion of a human) were matched to the function of the heterotrophic compartment and the photosynthesizing activity of the multispecies uneven-aged higher plant community. © 2018 IAA

Аннотация: Fullerenols are nanosized water-soluble polyhydroxylated derivatives of fullerenes, a specific allotropic form of carbon, bioactive compounds, and perspective basis for drug development. Our paper analyzes the antioxidant activity and toxicity of a series of fullerenols with different number of oxygen substituents. Two groups of fullerenols were under investigation: (1) C60Oy(OH)x, C60,70Oy(OH)x, where x + y = 24-28 and (2) C60,70Oy(OH)x, Fe0,5C60Oy(OH)x, Gd@C82Oy(OH)x, where x + y = 40-42. Bioluminescent cellular and enzymatic assays (luminous marine bacteria and their enzymatic reactions, respectively) were applied to monitor toxicity in the model fullerenol solutions and bioluminescence was applied as a signaling physiological parameter. The inhibiting concentrations of the fullerenols were determined, revealing the fullerenols' toxic effects. Antioxidant fullerenol' ability was studied in solutions of model oxidizer, 1,4-benzoquinone, and detoxification coefficients of general and oxidative types (DGT and DOxT) were calculated. All fullerenols produced toxic effect at high concentrations (>0.01 g L-1), while their antioxidant activity was demonstrated at low and ultralow concentrations (<0.001 g L-1). Quantitative toxic and antioxidant characteristics of the fullerenols (effective concentrations, concentration ranges, DGT, and DOxT) were found to depend on the number of oxygen substituents. Lower toxicity and higher antioxidant activity were determined in solutions of fullerenols with fewer oxygen substituents (x + y = 24-28). The differences in fullerenol properties were attributed to their catalytic activity due to reversible electron acceptance, radical trapping, and balance of reactive oxygen species in aqueous solutions. The results provide pharmaceutical sciences with a basis for selection of carbon nanoparticles with appropriate toxic and antioxidant characteristics. Based on the results, we recommend, to reduce the toxicity of prospective endohedral gadolinium-fullerenol preparations Gd@C82Oy(OH)x, decreasing the number of oxygen groups to x + y = 24-28. The potential of bioluminescence methods to compare toxic and antioxidant characteristics of carbon nanostructures were demonstrated.

Аннотация: It has been found that the carbon monoxide (CO)-resistant strain of the hydrogen bacteria Ralstonia eutropha B5786 is able to synthesise polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHAs) in the presence of CO under autotrophic conditions. This strain, grown on model gas mixtures containing 5-25% CO v/v), accumulates up to 70-75% (of absolutely dry matter) PHA, without significant variation in the yield coefficient on hydrogen. No suppression of the activities of the key enzymes of PHA synthesis (beta-ketothiolase, acetoacetyl-CoA-reductase, butyrate dehydrogenase and poly-3-hydroxybutyrate synthase) was recorded. The PHA synthesised is a copolymer containing mostly beta-hydroxybutyrate (more than 99 mol%) with trace amounts of beta-hydroxyvalerate. The investigated properties of the polymer (molecular weight, crystallinity, temperature characteristics) do not differ from those of the polymer synthesised on electrolytic hydrogen.

Аннотация: The paper presents a brief overview of the results of the implementation of the project "Agropreparations of the new generation: a strategy of construction and realization". The first part contains the analysis of the growth of the wild-type strain Cupriavidus necator B-10646 (formerly eutrophus) and the synthesis of polyhydroxyalkanoates by this strain on various substrates: glycerol, palm oil, Siberian oil seed, sunflower seed oils, and oleic acid. On refined glycerin, a highly productive process is implemented when scaling up, allowing to obtain 128 ± 11 g / L PHA. Evaluation of oils has shown that palm oil is the best carbon substrate. The second part presents the results of the development of environmentally friendly slow-release pesticide formulations. They are a degradable matrix of poly-3-hydroxybutyrate mixed with natural materials (peat, clay, wood flour), into which a pesticide (metribuzin, tribenuron-methyl, fenoxaprop-P-ethyl, azoxystrobin, epoxiconazole, and tebuconazole) has been. The developed preparations showed high activity against pathogenic fungi and weeds and had a much weaker negative effect on the soil microflora. Studies of the degradation of the developed preparations and the release of pesticides into the soil confirm their effectiveness over a long period of time, up to 90 days. © Published under licence by IOP Publishing Ltd.

Аннотация: Biodegradability patterns of two PHAs: a polymer of 3-hydroxybutyric acid (3-PHB) and a copolymer of 3-hydroxybutyric and 3-hydroxyvaleric acids (3-PHB/3-PHV) containing 11 mol% of hydroxyvalerate, were studied in the tropical marine environment, in the South China Sea (Nha Trang, Vietnam). No significant differences have been observed between degradation rates of 3-PHB and 3-PHB/3-PHV specimens; it has been found that under study conditions, biodegradation is rather influenced by the shape of the polymer item and the preparation technique than by the chemical composition of the polymer. Biodegradation rates of polymer films in seawater have been found to be higher than those of compacted pellets. As 3-PHB and 3-PHB/3-PHV are degraded and the specimens lose their mass, molecular weight of both polymers is decreased, i.e. polymer chains get destroyed. The polydispersity index of the PHAs grows significantly. However, the degree of crystallinity of both PHAs remains unchanged, i.e. the amorphous phase and the crystalline one are equally disintegrated. PHA-degrading microorganisms were isolated using the clear-zone technique, by inoculating the isolates onto mineral agar that contained PHA as sole carbon source. Based on the 16S rRNA analysis, the PHA-degrading strains were identified as Enterobacter sp. (four strains), Bacillus sp. and Gracilibacillus sp.В© 2010 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.
