Аннотация: For the identification of ecologically significant dominant groups of phytoplanktonic algae a polychromatic DCMU-induced fluorescence method is recommended. A special fluorometer equipped with a system of replaceable filters is used to differentiate three regions of the spectrum (410 +/- 20, 510 +/- 20 and 540 +/- 10 nm) that can excite the basic light-harvesting pigments. Total and differential (for every algal taxon studied) chlorophyll a calculated from the fluorescence signals is in good agreement with biomass estimates from direct cell counts for several different trophic types of aquatic systems. This is made possible by the vizualization of the ratios of fluorescence signal values in their own coordinates: first, to decide whether it is necessary to correct linear equations in order to eliminate negative solutions; second, to determine the possibility of nulling the negative solution if a point is situated close to a side of the triangle; and third, to reduce the number of linear algebraic equations to two if the points are situated along one of the triangle sides or to one if the points are gathered at the apex. The polychromatic DCMU-induced fluorescence method can be used for monitoring natural phytoplankton populations to detect changes in their taxonomic structure.

Аннотация: The localization of the key photoreductive and oxidative processes and some stress-protective reactions within leaves of mesophytic C3 plants were investigated. The role of light in determining the profile of Rubisco, glutamate oxaloacetate transaminase, catalase, fumarase, and cytochrome-c-oxidase across spinach leaves was examined by exposing leaves to illumination on either the adaxial or abaxial leaf surfaces. Oxygen evolution in fresh paradermal leaf sections and CO2 gas exchange in whole leaves under adaxial or abaxial illumination was also examined. The results showed that the palisade mesophyll is responsible for the midday depression of photosynthesis in spinach leaves. The photosynthetic apparatus was more sensitive to the light environment than the respiratory apparatus. Additionally, examination of the paradermal leaf sections by optical microscopy allowed us to describe two new types of parenchyma in spinach-pirum mesophyll and pillow spongy mesophyll. A hypothesis that oxaloacetate may protect the upper leaf tissue from the destructive influence of active oxygen is presented. The application of mathematical modeling shows that the pattern of enzymatic distribution across leaves abides by the principle of maximal ecological utility. Light regulation of carbon metabolism across leaves is discussed. В© 2010 Springer-Verlag.

Аннотация: The new data on anomalies in seasonal dynamics of chlorophyll concentration in the ocean have altered the approach to the analysis of long-term trends of phytopigments in the surface layer of the ocean. Zones have been found in which at various times there was a many-fold increase in chlorophyll concentration versus its usual level. These changes are local in time and space. If anomalies in the long-term tendencies in the change of phytopigment surface distribution in the ocean are ignored in the analysis, the resulting picture will inadequately reflect the real processes. The work presents the results of the analysis of long-term trends of chlorophyll concentration on the basis of the CZCS satellite data in the Atlantic Ocean. Аннотация: The age-related changes in the temperature dependence curves (TDC) of chlorophyll fluorescence were studied in leaf segments of wheat (Triticum aestivum L.), tomato (Lycopersicum esculentum Mill.), and cucumber (Cucumis sativum L.) plants grown under controlled photoculture conditions. Three major TDC patterns of chlorophyll fluorescence were identified within the temperature range of 25-70В°C, with each of the patterns corresponding to a certain phase of leaf development. The transition from one type of thermogram to another was a gradual and ordered process. The magnitude of the low-temperature TDC peak increased until leaves completely expanded and declined with leaf senescence. In the course of leaf senescence, the thermograms exhibited an additional shoulder, which further changed into a peak at 55-65В°C with increasing magnitude. Our data provide the basis for assessing leaf age from the type of chlorophyll fluorescence thermogram and the changes in the particular indices characteristic of TDC of chlorophyll fluorescence.

Аннотация: We examined the dynamics of the vertical stratification of physical, chemical and biological factors in a brackish meromictic lake with a deep-water chlorophyll maximum (Shira Lake, Russia, Khakasia) during the growing season and estimated how the vertical distribution of these factors influences the vertical distribution of the zooplankton community. The vertical distribution of zooplankton was restricted by the anoxic hypolimnion. Nauplii and younger copepodides (C1-C3) of the copepod, Arctodiaptomus salinus, and the rotifer, Brachionus plicatilis, were found in the upper warm waters. During summer stratification the maximum of A. salinus biomass, which consisted mainly of older copepodides (C4-C5) and females, was associated with the deep-water maximum of biomass of green algae, which are the preferred diet for this species. The vertical distribution of the rotifer Hexarthra oxiuris was bimodal with numerical peaks in the epi- and hypolimnion. Reproduction peaks of dominant species were separated in time. The reproduction peak of A. salinus was at the beginning of summer when A. salinus constituted up to 99% of total zooplankton biomass. The development of rotifers was detected after the reproduction peak of A. salinus when the biomass of rotifers reached 50% of total zooplankton biomass. В© 2007 Springer Science+Business Media B.V.

Аннотация: Presently, the most promising way of studying, forecasting, and enhancing of organisms' tolerance to harsh environmental impacts is considered to be the estimation of initial functional state of an organism's regulatory systems. To resolve the problem of photosynthetic apparatus (PSA) tolerance to harsh impacts at the level of such a complicated functional system as a plant leaf, it is necessary to assess integral responses of the leaf's PSA to the impact. At that, simple and versatile traits may have certain advantages. At present, chlorophyll fluorescence seems to be one of the main indices of PSA activity, which can be measured relatively fast and easy. One of the possible approaches to operational integrative assessment of PSA activity may consist in usage of the parameters introduced for the curves of chlorophyll fluorescence induction (CFI) slow phase. Temporal patterns of CFI are of special interest. The simplest index T-0.5 (i.e., half-time of chlorophyll fluorescence intensity decrease during the slow phase of CFI) appears to be an integral characteristic of activation rate with regard to a number of photo-assimilation and photo-protective processes in leaves. On basis of the studies, conducted earlier, and published data, we have analyzed the behavior of T-0.5 parameter with comparison to other CFI traits (namely: qN - non-photochemical quenching coefficient, ETR - electron transport rate, Phi(PSII) - effective quantum yield of PSII photochemistry, F-p/F-T ratio) under different conditions. The influence of leaf senescence, changes in intensity of excitation light, slight dehydration of plants and their recovery from water deficiency have been examined. The pattern of T-0.5 behavior, observed in laboratory experiments, and the results of its comparison with other indices of CFI give occasion to propose the usage of T-0.5 for indirect estimation of PSA activity when operational integrative monitoring of PSA state is required. Further studies are necessary for establishing quantitative relationships between PSA activity and fluorescence parameter T-0.5 under specific stress conditions.

Аннотация: Spectral brightness coefficients are correlated with indices of vertical attenuation of horizontal irradiance, water transparency, phytoplankton chlorophyll content, and phytoplankton distribution. Data were obtained from Krasnoyarsk Reservoir and the Dnieper reservoirs. When diatoms and pyrrhophytes predominate, the maximum spectral brightness is in the vicinity of 580 nm, but when blue-green algae predominate the maxima are in the vicinity of 550 and 720 nm. -from Authors

Аннотация: The work presents the data on the spatial distribution of temperature anomalies in the Global Ocean, based on the long-term measurements with the AVHRR satellite equipment. It is noteworthy that such results can be only obtained by using long time series of satellite images. To obtain them by ship-borne methods is actually impossible. The proposed anomaly criterion is equal to a difference between minimum/maximum and average temperature, normed for the mean square deviation. The difference is calculated from the whole time series (with regard to a season). Based on this criterion, anomalies can be distinguished on the background of usual seasonal dynamics at various absolute values of deviations of the measured parameter. Besides, rare, single, fluctuations can be also revealed. Based on the proposed criterion, connected zones have been defined. These zones occur almost in every part of the Global Ocean. The data obtained have been analyzed in association with the CZCS (1978-1986) and SeaWiFS satellite images in order to compare them with the areas of anomalous dynamics of chlorophyll concentration and the regions quasistationary in the seasonal dynamics of chlorophyll. Anomalies in the temperature dynamics are of exceptional importance for the formation of climatic deviations; they affect the ocean-atmosphere interaction and reflect variations in the hydrological structure of the surface waters. The work presents a comparison with the dynamics of chlorophyll concentration distribution determined from the SeaWiFS data for the Atlantic Ocean. В© 2003 COSPAR. Published by Elsevier Ltd. Аннотация: The work presents long-standing CZCS-satellite-based data about spatial distribution of anomalies in chlorophyll concentration and temperature of the ocean. An anomaly criterion is proposed. Maps of Atlantic ocean areas with elevated probability of anomalies are given. Properties of anomalous zones in different parts of the Atlantic ocean are discussed. Satellite-based maps of anomaly coefficients for chlorophyll concentration and temperature in the Atlantic ocean have been shown to feature substantial differences, the zones of elevated anomaly of chlorophyll concentration and temperature - to be close only in the vicinity of the Amazon outflow into the Atlantic ocean. Along with fundamental knowledge about dynamics of biological phenomena in the ocean the methods described may be used to reveal deviations due to anthropogenic impact. The methods presented may be used to process SeaWiFS prograna data. The data derived may be used to analyze long-standing time series to estimate randomness of cunent changes. В©2002 COSPAR. Аннотация: The work-presents long-standing CZCS-satellite-based data about spatial distribution of anomalies in chlorophyll concentration and temperature of the ocean. The methods presented may be used to process SeaWiFS program data. The data derived may be used to analyze long-standing time series to estimate randomness of current changes. (C) 2002 COSPAR. Аннотация: The paper analyses the results of multi-year studies of the state of agricultural crops based on plant reflectance during the growth period. A universal methodology for determining the physiological state, and plant phytopigment content from the value of the chlorophyll potential S(t) in the region of the red absorption band lambda = 680 nm, which can be determined from the SEC values, is presented. It is shown that addition of mineral fertilisers (and, in particular, nitrogen) to soils, in on average 10 days slows the process of chlorophyll breakdown in phytocoenoses in comparison with control areas.

Аннотация: The paper analyzes the stability of areas in the Global Ocean, which are quasistationary with respect to the seasonal dynamics of chlorophyll concentration. Such areas were first discovered based on the CZCS data. They occur almost in all regions of the Global Ocean. They reflect typical seasonal dynamics of phytoplankton, which depends on both large ocean currents and local hydrological instability. It is related to the displacement of frontal zones and to local hydrological anomalies. Since the completion of the CZCS work there has been a 10 years gap in monitoring chlorophyll spatial distribution dynamics in the ocean. The reason is the long absence of equipment on the orbit, which would be suitable for the measurement of chlorophyll concentration. Recently, SeaWiFS data have been accumulated and their quantity is sufficient for the crude statistical analysis of image time series for 25 years. Thus, it has become possible to obtain data on the long-term stability of quasistationary areas and, therefore, on the stability of large-scale hydrological phenomena in the Atlantic Ocean. Аннотация: The reaction of algae and cyano-bacteria photosynthetic apparatus on atmospheric sediments, incident solar radiation and wind velocity was estimated by measuring chlorophyll fluorescence using three-beam fluorescent diagnostics. As shown, wind in the spring positively affects the chlorophyll concentration but causes negative effect on phytoplankton photosynthetic activity in other seasons. Under conditions of high-intensity solar irradiation confervoid and colonial cyanobacteria, possessing gas vacuoles, have an advantage over plankton eukaryotic algae. Other response differences weren't observed.

Аннотация: Prospects for remote ground and satellite sensing to monitor agricultural (agrocenoses) and grass (meadows and steppes) vegetation are considered. This helps assess chlorophyll contents, crop yields, impurities of territories and identify agrocenoses. Investigation of vegetation on salinized soils identified the necessity to consider the succession of limiting factors (temperature and the degree of soil salinization). The results of studies on grassland plant communities in Khakassia based on geobotanical descriptions and ground spectral measurements are presented, allowing the refinement of methods that improve the accuracy of deciphering satellite images of medium and low resolutions.
