Аннотация: Productivity values, sodium accumulation in aboveground biomass, and photosynthetic indices of watercress (Nasturtium officinale) leaves were investigated under conditions resembling artificial closed ecological systems (CES). The seedlings were grown on nutrient media with various NaCl concentrations (0.7, 1.4, and 1.8 g/L) for 7, 14, and 19 days after transferring them to saline solutions. The productivity of plants on the seventh day of their growth on saline media did not differ from that of control plants. The decrease in plant productivity was noted in all the treatments starting from the 14th day after transferring the plants to saline solutions. When NaCl concentration in the nutrient solution was raised from 0.7 to 1.8 g/L, a significant increase in relative Na+ content in plant tissues was observed, regardless of the duration of NaCl treatment. A substantial decrease in chlorophyll (a + b) to carotenoid content ratio was noted on the seventh and 14th days in plants grown at 1.8 g/L NaCl. In plants treated for 7 days with 0.7 and 1.4 g/L NaCl, the content of chlorophylls a and b and carotenoids was found to increase, which indicates the tolerance of N. officinale to CES conditions. The relative content of chlorophylls a and b in the light-harvesting chlorophyll (a + b) complex was independent of the extent of salinity. The maximum quantum yield of photosystem II reaction in N. officinale plants had typically high values (Y(II)(max) of 0.755 +/- 0.007). Using the Imaging Maxi version of the pulse amplitude-modulated (PAM) fluorometer, it was found that light curves for the effective quantum yield of photochemical and nonphotochemical fluorescence quenching (Y(II) and Y(NPQ), respectively) differed appreciably between the salt-treated and untreated plants in the case of long-term cultivation (19 days) at 0.7 and 1.4 g/L NaCl. The treatment with 1.8 g/L NaCl for the period from 14 to 19 days had no effect on light curves of Y(II) and Y(NPQ). It is argued that N. officinale can be used as a source of NaCl for humans under CES conditions.

Аннотация: This paper presents the results of a study assessing the degree of weed infestation of wheat crops. They are obtained using optical ground-based and satellite spectral data with a 3-m spatial resolution from PlanetScope Dove satellites for 2019. The vegetation indices, including the normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI), the relative chlorophyll index (Chlorophyll Index Green-ClGreen or GCI), the modified soil-adjusted vegetation index (MSAVI2), and the visible atmospherically resistant index (VARI) are used in the interpretation of ground-based spectrometric and space images. This paper indicates the possibility of assessing the degree of weed infestation of agricultural fields. The higher the weed infestation, the lower the index values. The dynamics of VARI is found to be different from the dynamics of NDVI, ClGreen, and MSAVI2 during the growing season. The strong correlation between NDVI, ClGreen, and MSAVI2 and the weak correlation between VARI and other indices are observed. The possibility of identifying weedy sites in the agricultural fields is shown using the spatial distribution map of ClGreen dated August 2, 2019.

Metribuzin -- tribenuron-methyl -- degradable P(3HB) -- weed growth -- inhibition -- photosynthetic activity
Аннотация: The present study addresses the herbicidal activity and biological effects of the metribuzin (MET) and tribenuron-methyl (TBM) herbicides used to control various weed species (Amaranthus retroflexus, Sinapis arvensis, andLeucanthemum maximum). The effects of the free herbicides and the herbicides embedded in granules of degradable polymer poly-3-hydroxybutyrate [P(3HB)] blended with birch wood flour were compared. Metribuzin, regardless of the form, caused 100% mortality of the three weeds by day 21. The herbicidal activity of tribenuron-methyl was lower than that of metribuzin, but the embedded TBM was superior to the free herbicide in the length and strength of its action on the weeds. Both metribuzin forms dramatically decreased the main parameters of fluorescence: maximum quantum yield of photosystem-II [Y(II)(max)], maximum quantum yield of non-photochemical quenching [Y(NPQ)(max)], and maximum rate of non-cyclic electron transport [ETRmax] and concentrations of chlorophyllaandb. The effect of the embedded TBM on the photosynthetic activity of the weeds was lower in the first two weeks of the growth of herbicide-treated plants but lasted longer than the effect of the free TBM and increased over time. Embedding of metribuzin in the matrix of degradable blend did not decrease its herbicidal activity.

chlorophyll fluorescence induction -- leaf age -- photosystem II
Аннотация: The range of variations in parameter tau(0.5) - half-time of fluorescence intensity decrease during the slow phase of chlorophyll fluorescence induction (CFI) - has been studied during ontogeny of leaves of monocotyledonous and dicotyledonous plants in plant communities of different structures. Plants were grown hydroponically on expanded clay aggregate in growth chambers, under PPFD of 400 mu mol(photon) m(-2) s(-1), under controlled conditions. Analysis of the literature data and results of experimental observations of tau(0.5) behavior compared to other CFI parameters, nonphotochemical quenching coefficient, q(N), in particular, leads to the conclusion that parameter tau(0.5) can be effectively used for indirect estimation of variations in the activity of photosynthetic apparatus during ontogeny of plant leaves.

mesocosms -- nutrients -- chlorophyll -- biomass of crustaceans -- species -- structure of zooplankton -- food quality
Аннотация: It has been shown that the main drivers of the dynamics of cladoceran and copepod abundances can be predators (fish), the quantity and/or quality of food in terms of the contents of eicosapentaenoic acid, phosphorus and nitrogen in the seston under eutrophic conditions. In experimental mesocosms under eutrophic conditions, we found that, fish did not affect the quantity and quality of food resources for crustaceans. In the second half of experiments, however, dominance shifted from copepods to cladocerans. This was due to the improvement of the food quality for cladocerans in terms of the carbon-to-phosphorus ratio in the seston rather than to fish predation. Under eutrophic conditions, fish reduced the biomass of both cladocerans and copepods without changing the ratio between them.

Аннотация: Presently, the most promising way of studying, forecasting, and enhancing of organisms' tolerance to harsh environmental impacts is considered to be the estimation of initial functional state of an organism's regulatory systems. To resolve the problem of photosynthetic apparatus (PSA) tolerance to harsh impacts at the level of such a complicated functional system as a plant leaf, it is necessary to assess integral responses of the leaf's PSA to the impact. At that, simple and versatile traits may have certain advantages. At present, chlorophyll fluorescence seems to be one of the main indices of PSA activity, which can be measured relatively fast and easy. One of the possible approaches to operational integrative assessment of PSA activity may consist in usage of the parameters introduced for the curves of chlorophyll fluorescence induction (CFI) slow phase. Temporal patterns of CFI are of special interest. The simplest index T-0.5 (i.e., half-time of chlorophyll fluorescence intensity decrease during the slow phase of CFI) appears to be an integral characteristic of activation rate with regard to a number of photo-assimilation and photo-protective processes in leaves. On basis of the studies, conducted earlier, and published data, we have analyzed the behavior of T-0.5 parameter with comparison to other CFI traits (namely: qN - non-photochemical quenching coefficient, ETR - electron transport rate, Phi(PSII) - effective quantum yield of PSII photochemistry, F-p/F-T ratio) under different conditions. The influence of leaf senescence, changes in intensity of excitation light, slight dehydration of plants and their recovery from water deficiency have been examined. The pattern of T-0.5 behavior, observed in laboratory experiments, and the results of its comparison with other indices of CFI give occasion to propose the usage of T-0.5 for indirect estimation of PSA activity when operational integrative monitoring of PSA state is required. Further studies are necessary for establishing quantitative relationships between PSA activity and fluorescence parameter T-0.5 under specific stress conditions.

Chlorophyll -- Food quality -- Life-table experiments -- Phosphorus limitation -- Zooplankton
Аннотация: The purpose of this study was to determine how zebra mussels affected cladoceran community structure under eutrophic conditions. We conducted a mesocosm study where we manipulated the presence of zebra mussels and the presence of large-bodied Daphnia (Daphnia magna and Daphnia pulicaria). We also conducted a complimentary life-table experiment to determine how water from the zebra mussel treatment affected the life history characteristics of the cladoceran species. We anticipated that small- and large-bodied cladoceran species would respond differently to changes in algal quality and quantity under the effects of zebra mussels. Large-bodied Daphnia successfully established in the zebra mussel treatment but failed to grow in the control. We did not observe positive relationships between food concentrations and cladoceran abundances. However, the phosphorus content in the seston indicated that food quality was below the threshold level for large-bodied cladocerans at the beginning of the experiment. We believe that zebra mussels quickly enhanced the phosphorus content in the seston due to the excretion of inorganic phosphorus, thus facilitating the development of large-bodied Daphnia. In conclusion, our results suggest that zebra mussels can alter the phosphorus content of seston in lakes and this can affect the dynamics of crustacean zooplankton. © 2018 Springer International Publishing AG, part of Springer Nature

Аннотация: Prospects for remote ground and satellite sensing to monitor agricultural (agrocenoses) and grass (meadows and steppes) vegetation are considered. This helps assess chlorophyll contents, crop yields, impurities of territories and identify agrocenoses. Investigation of vegetation on salinized soils identified the necessity to consider the succession of limiting factors (temperature and the degree of soil salinization). The results of studies on grassland plant communities in Khakassia based on geobotanical descriptions and ground spectral measurements are presented, allowing the refinement of methods that improve the accuracy of deciphering satellite images of medium and low resolutions.

Аннотация: Light intensity and nitrogen concentration of nutrient solution are considered crucial for the contents of vitamin C and nitrate in cultivated leaf vegetables. We here investigated the effects of various combinations of light intensity (60,140 and 220 mu mol m(-2) s(-1)) and nitrogen concentration (7,15 and 23 mmol L-1) of the solution on the growth, photosynthetic characteristics, vitamin C and nitrate content of lettuce. Our results demonstrate that the lettuce had the largest dry biomass at the high illumination of 220 mu mol m(-2) s(-1) and low nitrogen of 7 mmol L-1. The higher light and low nitrogen also contributed to the accumulation of vitamin C and decrease of nitrate in lettuce leaves. The effect of nitrogen supply on chlorophyll concentrations was more efficient under low light than high illumination. Our results reveal that there was an obvious interaction between light intensity and nitrogen available for the photosynthesis, yield and quality of lettuce. This study provides valuable insights into the combinational regulation of light intensity and nitrogen supply for improving growth and nutritional quality of vegetables grown in greenhouse and plant factory. Chlorophyll potential -- Optical remote method -- Wheat -- Triticum aestivum
Аннотация: This study aimed to analyze the relationship between chlorophyll potential, chlorophyll content, and grain yield of different wheat cultivars by using ground remote sensing and laboratory data. Chlorophyll potential is the difference between the reflectance factor integrals with and without chlorophyll absorption (in the 550–730 nm wavelength range). Ground-truth data were obtained at the experimental fields located in the Krasnoyarsk region, Russia (2002–2012). Experiments were conducted in different seasons under various lighting conditions by controlling plants states and soil types. Spectral measurements were obtained using a double-beam spectroradiometer, which was installed on a mobile work platform at a height of 5–18 m. The photometric area varied from 0.5 to 2 m2. The study showed good correlation (R2 = 0.9) between chlorophyll potential and chlorophyll content for different wheat cultivars. However, the correlation between chlorophyll potential and grain yield was less (R2 = 0.8). The values of chlorophyll potentials depended on the type of wheat during the growing season. The novelty of the approach is that it calculates the chlorophyll potential with additional spectral regions when compared with normalized difference vegetation index. We used a spectroradiometer with high spectral resolution. This increased the accuracy and stability of measurements in rapidly changing conditions. © 2016

Аннотация: Saline Lake Shira (Southern Siberia, Russia) was meromictic through the observation period 2002-2015. During the under-ice periods of 2015 and 2016, complete mixing of the water column was recorded for the first time, and hydrogen sulphide temporarily disappeared from the water column of the lake; i.e. in those years the lake turned to holomixis. In the summer of 2015, a sharp increase in chlorophyll a, organic carbon, zooplankton, and phytoflagellates was observed in the lake, which was probably due to the release of nutrients from the monimolimnion. Purple sulfur bacteria completely disappeared from the lake after the first mixing in 2015, and did not reappear despite the restoration of meromixis in 2017. Thus, it was demonstrated that purple sulfur bacteria are sensitive to the weakening of the stratification of Lake Shira. Based on the data of the seasonal monitoring of temperature and salinity profiles over the period 2002-2017, it was presumed that the main cause of deep mixing in 2015 was the weakening of the salinity gradient due to strong wind impact and early ice retreat in the spring of 2014. In addition, it was shown that in previous years a significant contribution to the maintenance of meromixis was made by an additional influx of fresh water, which caused a rise in the lake level in the period 2002-2007. Thus, we identified a relationship between the stratification regime of the lake and the change in its level, which provides valuable information both for the forecast of Water quality and for reconstruction of the Holocene climate humidity in this region of Southern Siberia from the sediment cores of Lake Shira.

actinic light intensity -- induction of chlorophyll fluorescence -- leaf ontogeny -- Triticum aestivum
Аннотация: Application of pulse-amplitude-modulation (PAM) fluorometers for measuring slow stages of chlorophyll fluorescence induction (CFI) is considered. With an example of Triticum aestuvum L. plants grown under continuous illumination at a photon flux density of 600 μmol/(m2 s) photosynthetically active radiation (PAR), the CFI curves were analyzed with leaves of various ages as a function of actinic light intensity. The fluorometer PAM-2100 was applied for measurements of CFI curves. The characteristic peaks of CFI curves in wheat leaves were most conspicuous and had the largest amplitudes at 600–800 μmol/(m2 s) PAR, which corresponds to the middle range of actinic light intensities employed in PAM-2100 fluorometers. In plants exposed to favorable and stressful conditions, the developmental stages may proceed at different rates; thus, the comparison of fluorescence parameters for leaves of equal calendar age but having different physiological states may provide ambiguous data. Therefore, the feasibility of recording CFI curves of different types is quite important for rapid diagnostics of the age and state of plant leaves, as well as for adequate physiological conclusions. © 2016, Pleiades Publishing, Ltd.

Аннотация: This study assesses the comparative sensitivity and possibility of obtaining fast results of various methods of biotesting for several surfactants: Tween 85, sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS), Fairy dishwashing gel, and Mif washing powder. The following test organisms are used for the study: luminescent bacteria Photobacterium phosphoreum (Beijerinck), preparation of Ecolum luminescent bacteria, unicellular algae Scenedesmus quadricauda (G.M. Smith), infusorian Paramecium caudatum (Ehrenberg), and crustacean Daphnia magna (Straus). It has been revealed that Fairy dishwashing gel possesses the strongest toxicity against the studied test objects. Daphnia and algae are most sensitive to the effects of Fairy and SDS, protozoan and luminescent bacteria are most sensitive to SDS, and Ecolum is most sensitive to Mif washing powder. The tested aquatic organisms and Ecolum are most tolerant to the effect of Tween 85. © 2016, Pleiades Publishing, Ltd.

Аннотация: Wheat (Triticum sativus L.) seedlings of various ages (2- to 16-day-old plants) were used to study age-dependent changes in the chlorophyll fluorescence induction (CFI) at various light intensities during flu- orescence measurements. Plants were raised in a growth chamber using hydroponics with expanded clay, controlled environmental conditions, and 690 A mu mol/(m(2) s) photon flux density (PFD) of photosynthetically active radiation (PAR). Parameters of CFI were determined under actinic PFD of 380, 580, 820, and 1340 A mu mol/(m(2) s) PAR. The fifth leaf from the stem base, exposed to uniform lighting, was sampled for measurements. This leaf emerged at the plant age of 16 days. Based on fluorescence data, we calculated the maximal photochemical quantum yield of photosystem II (F (v)/F (m)), the effective photochemical quantum yield of PSII (Yield), parameters of photochemical (qP) and non-photochemical (qN and NPQ) quenching of chlorophyll fluorescence, the F (p)/F (t) ratio, and the "vitality index" (fluorescence decrease ratio, R (fd)). At moderate actinic PFD, applied commonly in PAM fluorometers (about 380 A mu mol/(m(2) s)), age-dependent changes in NPQ, F (p)/F (t), and R (fd) were observed. Analysis of CFI parameters in wheat leaves of different ages at PFD increasing from 380 to 820 A mu mol/(m(2) s) revealed that R (fd), NPQ, and qN are the most sensitive markers of the leaf age among all parameters tested. These suitable indicators can be used for rapid assessment of the leaf age.

Аннотация: The effects of actinic light (AL) intensity on the age dependence of nonphotochemical fluorescence quenching (q(N)) and effective quantum yield in PSII (I broken vertical bar(PSII)) were studied in continuously illuminated wheat leaves of the upper tier. Regular changes were revealed in both age dependence of q(N) at elevated AL intensities and light curves of q(N). These changes are related to alterations in strategies of redistribution and use of absorbed light energy by the photosynthetic apparatus at different stages of wheat leaf development. Unlike I broken vertical bar(PSII), q(N) as a parameter was more sensitive to the differences in the leaf age at a certain range of light intensities. At the same time, the stability of q(N) at moderate light intensities may serve as an indication of leaf maturity.

Phytoflagellates -- Meromictic lake -- Simulation modeling -- Lake Shira
Аннотация: Using mathematical modeling methods, the work investigates possible existence of a phytoflagellate population in the ecosystem of a stratified lake (Lake Shira, Khakasia, Russia). Until this study was carried out, no phytoflagellate population had been detected in the lake, although there had been indirect evidence of the possible presence of a cryptomonad population in this water body. To answer the question if this population may be present in this water body, as the first step of investigation, a mathematical model was developed describing the microorganism biomass dynamics and phytoflagellate relationship with the lake food web. The calculations showed that cryptophytic algae were abundant in the water column layers above the lake chemocline at the beginning of summer but showed low biomass concentrations during other periods of time. In the summer following the construction of the model, samples were collected from Lake Shira, as the next step of the study. A cryptophytic algae population was found in the water column, and the pattern of its distribution in the ecosystem was similar to that predicted by the model. In addition to that, we studied theoretically possible reasons for the early summer development of the population in the deep water layers and found that it was the result of the mixotrophic feeding strategy of cryptomonads and trophic interactions in the food web. The study shows that preliminary modeling of the locational and temporal distribution of populations whose presence in the ecosystem is only suggested by indirect evidence may be useful as a tool for searching for the species in natural ecosystems and as an approach enabling a more accurate description of the food web structure of a water body. Аннотация: The use of mineralized human wastes as a basis for nutrient solutions will increase the degree of material closure of bio-technical human life support systems. As stress tolerance of plants is determined, among other factors, by the conditions under which they have been grown before exposure to a stressor, the purpose of the study is to investigate the level of tolerance of chufa (Cyperus esculentus L.) plant communities grown in solutions based on mineralized human wastes to a damaging air temperature, 45 °C. Experiments were performed with 30-day-old chufa plant communities grown hydroponically, on expanded clay aggregate, under artificial light, at 690 ?mol m-2 s-1 PAR and at a temperature of 25 °C. Plants were grown in Knop's solution and solutions based on human wastes mineralized according to Yu.A. Kudenko's method, which contained nitrogen either as ammonium and urea or as nitrates. The heat shock treatment lasted 20 h at 690 and 1150 ?mol m -2 s-1 PAR. Chufa heat tolerance was evaluated based on parameters of CO2 gas exchange, the state of its photosynthetic apparatus (PSA), and intensity of peroxidation of leaf lipids. Chufa plants grown in the solutions based on mineralized human wastes that contained ammonium and urea had lower heat tolerance than plants grown in standard mineral solutions. Heat tolerance of the plants grown in the solutions based on mineralized human wastes that mainly contained nitrate nitrogen was insignificantly different from the heat tolerance of the plants grown in standard mineral solutions. A PAR intensity increase from 690 ?mol m -2 s-1 to 1150 ?mol m-2 s-1 enhanced heat tolerance of chufa plant communities, irrespective of the conditions of mineral nutrition under which they had been grown. © 2014 COSPAR.
