Аннотация: We describe the experimental system having maximal possible closure of material recycling in an ecosystem, including people and plants, which was carried out in a hermetically sealed experimental complex "BIOS-3", 315 m2 in volume. The system included 2 experimentators and 3 phytotrons with plants (total sowing area of 63 m2). Plants were grown with round-the-clock lamp irradiation with 130 Wm-2 PAR intensity. The plants production was food for people. Water exchange of ecosystem, as well as gas exchange, was fully closed excluding liquids and gas samples taken for chemical analysis outside the system. The total closure of material turnover constituted 91%. Health state of the crew was estimated before, during and after the experiment. A 5-months period did not affect their health. The experiments carried out prove that the closed ecosystem of "man-plants" is a prototype of a life-support system for long-term space expeditions. В© 1989.

Аннотация: Repeated plasmapheresis sessions attended by chemiluminescent evaluation of cellular immunity parameters lead to the recovery of the whole blood leucocyte activity in patients with unhealing gastroduodenal ulcers. The kinetic analysis of the cellular chemiluminescent response has shown that, among all the components of the plasmapheresis procedure, hemorrhage is the most important factor increasing the functional activity of phagocytes.

Аннотация: A new method of evaluation of similarity between two nucleotide sequences is proposed. It is based on comparing frequency/correlation dictionaries of the sequences under investigation. The dictionary is a set of all strings of various length occurring within the sequences accompanied by their frequencies. The method proposed allows to compare sequences of arbitrary lengths, its advantage is absence of necessity of informal (expert) choice of the best fit. Efficiency of the method is demonstrated by comparison of several human genes and viruses.

Аннотация: Waters of the Yenisei River, certain rivers and lakes of the Altai Territory, and effluents of some industrial factories in Krasnoyarsk were studied by luminous bacteria biotest Microbiosensor B17 677F. The lyophilized luminous bacteria Photobacterium phosphoreum from the IBSO collection were used to design this biotest. The bioluminescent test is based on bioluminescence quenching resulting from the action of water samples on luminous bacteria. The test results indicated locations and zones of impaired water quality. The heaviest pollution of water in the Yenisei River was recorded in the zones 0-116 km downstream from Krasnoyarsk (Krasnoyarsk and satellite towns). The effluents of most factories were found to be toxic. Underground and surface waters of some areas of the Altai Territory had different toxicity levels; there were deviations from the norm in most water samples taken from the different lakes and rivers. The data from this study show that the luminous bacteria biotest is simple and convenient, and that the results obtained are within acceptable levels of accuracy for the evaluation of the toxicity of effluent and river water. It takes no more than 30 min to do the biotest. It can be used in ecological monitoring like the Microtox toxicity test. В© 1998 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

Аннотация: To develop and design Life Support Systems it is necessary to evaluate their reliability. However direct experiments take much time, are very expensive, and therefore are practically impossible. Promising way is to use approximate estimates of reliability, which need essentially fewer amounts of experimental data. Two types of estimates of Life Support System reliability - additive and multiplicative ones are considered in the paper. Additive estimate is based on the assumption that total system failure probability is low and therefore it can be considered as the sum of failure probability of separate units. Additive approach allows obtaining near lower-bounded estimate of failure probability. Multiplicative estimate allows evaluating the possibility of system catastrophe due to simultaneous effect of several factors when each of them separately is not dangerous. Evaluation shows that the possible error of reliability forecast increases with the increasing of number of external factors faster than exponential function. An illustration of the ecological similarity approach as promising tool for providing estimation of full-scale system reliability by means the set of small similar experimental models. Аннотация: Any comprehensive evaluation of Life Support Systems (LSS) for space applications has to be conducted taking into account not only mass of LSS components but also all relevant equipment and storage: spare parts, additional mass of space ship walls, power supply and heat rejection systems. In this paper different combinations of hybrid LSS (HLSS) components were evaluated. Three variants of power supply were under consideration - solar arrays, direct solar light transmission to plants, and nuclear power. The software based on simplex approach was used for optimizing LSS configuration with respect to its mass. It was shown that there are several LSS configuration, which are optimal for different time intervals. Аннотация: The use of relative variable fluorescence (RVF) of chlorophyll, as measured in the presence of Diuron, an inhibitor of electron transfer, for the estimation of the photosynthetic activity of plankton microalgae was analyzed under a wide range of light intensities in the PAR region. Oxygen evolution rates (estimated by the method of light and dark bottles and the amperometric method), RVF, and chlorophyll a concentration were measured in parallel in natural algal cenoses and microecosystems. When the previously used regression equation, in the form A = b(DeltaF/F-d)CchlI, where A is O-2 evolution rate (g/(m(3) h), DeltaF/F-d is RVF (relative units), C-chl is chlorophyll a concentration (mg/m(3)), and I is light intensity (W/m(2)), was verified in the PAR region, we observed a nonlinear dependence of the correction coefficient b on I, which can be described by the formula b = 6.227 x 10(3)rootI. This result agrees with the hypothesis that chlorophyll a fluorescence quenching comprises photochemical (qQ) and energy (qE) components. On the basis of the energy model, we determined the upper limit b(max) = 0.003 for light intensity range I < 4.4 W/m(2) and the lower limit b(min) = 0.0003 for I = 400 W/m(2).

Аннотация: This work describes avenues to use satellite information to analyse dynamic processes in aquatic ecosystems. Information for this analysis, was retrieved from AVHRR satellite sensor data. This information consisteds of time series of images of radiation temperature and turbidity. We expect this information will be of great value in analysing inland water bodies. Methods to process satellite information using original software and data processing techniques are proposed. For the investigation of the process and analyses of satellite information Shira Lake (Khakasia, Siberia) was used as a case study. To study the variability of the surface temperature and turbidity of the Lake in summer, the satellite and ground-truth data of the lake was applied. This study represents the first evaluation of the dynamic processes for Lake Shira based on satellite, ground-truth and modelling data. We developed algorithms and software to process satellite images to enable the reconstruction of time dependence of temperature and spectral reflectance of water bodies in the visible range, and to make computer-animated films visualising the spatial and temporal dynamics of the study parameters. The analyses of morphometric, meteorological and hydrological characteristics of Lake Shira have provided a realistic opportunity for processing the satellite information and to develop numerical models of variability of the hydrological regime of the lake. The results obtained demonstrate the feasibility of systematically retrieving the spatial information from the satellite data on the dynamics of the surface water temperature and of the suspended matter in the lake.

Аннотация: A new method is proposed to evaluate the interaction coefficients in microbial communities interacting due to physical-chemical environmental factors. This method differs from the classical one suggested by E.P.Odum. Redefinition of the interaction coefficients allows the evaluation of the experimental (actual) and theoretical values of the coefficients for the hypothetical interaction layout. The interaction layout is considered to be a set of factors, the values of their transformation ratios and the form of dependence of a population's specific growth rate on these factors. A comparison of theoretical and experimental values of interaction coefficients enables us to assess the adequacy of the hypothetical interaction scheme in the microbial communities. The aim of the work is to test the suggested method on a natural algal-bacterial community of Shira Lake (Khakasia, Russia), which has been the object of detailed and concerted limnological studies and for which detailed data are available. Feedback coefficients of phyto- and bacterioplankton and the coefficients of influence of phytoplankton on bacterioplankton have been defined. Dominance of negative experimental IC values has been experimentally shown, which is indicative of the negative feedback in bacterio- and phytoplankton links of Shira Lake and of negative interpopulation (phytoplankton on bacterioplankton) interactions. The considerable differences observed between the experimental and theoretical coefficients indicates inadequacy of the assumed interaction layout of the community under study. Further investigations are needed to provide a precise sketch of the interactions.

Аннотация: We studied the possibility of evaluation of the intensity of pathological oxidative processes in rat liver using an integral bioluminescent test with controlled perfusion of the isolated organ. The test revealed a significant correlation between the level of TBA-reactive products and bioluminescence intensity.

Аннотация: The processes resulting from the introduction of the transgenic microorganism (TM) E. coli Z905/pPHL7 into aquatic microcosms have been modeled experimentally. It has been shown that the TM E. coli is able to adapt to a long co-existence with indigenous heterotrophic microflora in variously structured microcosms. In more complex microcosms the numerical dynamics of the introduced E. coli Z905/pPHL7 population is more stable. In the TM populations staying in the microcosms for a prolonged time, changes are recorded in the phenotypic expression of plasmid genes (ampicillin resistance and the luminescence level) and chromosome genes (morphological and physiological traits). However, in our study microcosms, the recombinant plasmid persisted in the TM cells for 6 years after die introduction, and as the population adapts to the conditions of the microcosms, the efficiency of the cloned gene expression in the cells is restored. In the microcosms with high microalgal counts (10(7) cells/ml), cells with a high threshold of sensitivity to ampicillin dominate in the population of the TM E. coli Z905/pPHL7. (C) 2003 COSPAR. Аннотация: A new method of estimating non-predatory mortality of zooplankton based on live/dead sorting and sediment trap measurement is described. Preliminary results on Daphnia cucullata and Daphnia longispina are given. Estimations of average non-predatory mortality demonstrated a significant contribution of this kind of mortality to total mortality.

Аннотация: Sustainability is one of the most important criteria and evaluation of human life support systems intended for use during long space flights. The common feature of biological and physicochemical life support systems is that basically they are both catalytic. But there are two fundamental properties distinguishing biological systems: 1) they are auto-catalytic: their catalysts - enzymes of protein nature - are continuously reproduced when the system functions; 2) the program of every process performed by enzymes and the program of their reproduction are inherent in the biological system itself - in the totality of genomes of the species involved in the functioning of the ecosystem. Actually, one cell with the genome capable of the phenotypic realization is enough for the self-restoration of the function performed by the cells of this species in the ecosystem. The continuous microalgal culture of Chlorella vulgaris was taken to investigate quantitatively the process of self-restoration in unicellular algae population. Based on the data obtained, we proposed a mathematical model of the restoration process in a cell population that has suffered an acute radiation damage. В© 2003 COSPAR.
