Paramecium bursaria -- endosymbiosis -- matter exchange cycle
Аннотация: A hypothesis is considered that the establishment and maintenance of mass exchange processes in the Paramecium bursaria symbiotic complex (infusorian-alga) depends on the presence of the third component-bacteria-whose role is underestimated but essential for completing the exchange cycle. The role of this component in the symbiotic cycle of Paramecium bursaria is possible to reveal using special bactericidal preparations specifically inhibiting the bacteria involved in the metabolic cycle but having no effect on the functions of the host cell and the zoochlorella population. Experiments with various preparations of this type were performed, and the response to treatment was estimated from growth rates of the symbiotic complex and its components. This allowed identification of an antibiotic (rifampicin) that had no adverse influence on free-living zoochlorella and chlorella-free paramecia (the basic components of the symbiotic cycle) but drastically inhibited the growth of the P. bursaria symbiotic complex, which could be interpreted as evidence in favor of the hypothesis concerning the existence of the third symbiotic component.

Кл.слова (ненормированные):
Botryococcus braunii -- batch culture -- lipids -- fatty acids
Аннотация: The lipid fraction of the green alga Botryococcus cultured in a batch mode was found to contain polar lipids (more than 50% of the total lipids), di- and triacylglycerols, sterols and their eaters, free fatty acids, and hydrocarbons. In aging culture, the content of polar lipids somewhat decreased and that of triacylglycerols increased by more than four times. The content of hydrocarbons in the algal biomass did not exceed 0.9% and depended little on the culture age. Intracellular lipids contained saturated and unsaturated (mono-, di-, and trienoic) fatty acids. The maximum content of C-16:3 and alpha -C-18 :3 fatty acids (up to 35% of the total fatty acids) was detected in the phase of active growth. The extracellular and intracellular lipids of the al,oa differed in the proportion of particular lipids and in the fatty acid pattern.

Аннотация: The light- and electron-microscopic analysis of the colonies of a bacterial consortium capable of utilizing alkylsulfonates, which are the main ingredients of waste from the synthetic rubber industry, revealed the presence of eight types of cells. All types of cells were gram-negative and differed in shape, size, and the presence of capsule and cytoplasmic inclusions. Three types of cells were present in all the colonies studied. The presence of the other types of cells depended on the inoculum used and on the composition of the growth medium.

Аннотация: In a model experiment plants were grown in sealed chambers on expanded clay aggregate under the luminance of 150 W/m(2) PAR and the temperature of 24 degreesC. Seven bacterial strains under investigation, replicated on nutrient medium surface in Petri dishes, were grown in the atmosphere of cultivated plants. Microbial response was evaluated by the difference between colony size in experiment and in control. In control, bacteria grew in the atmosphere of clean air. To study the effect of volatile metabolites of various plant on microbial growth, the experimental data were compared with the background values defined for each individual experiment. Expanded clay aggregate, luminance, temperature and sealed chamber (without plants) for the background were the same. Volatile metabolites from 28-days old radish plants have been reliably established to have no effect on the growth of microbes under investigation. Metabolites of 30-days old dill and 50-days old garlic have been established to have reliable bacteriostatic effect on the growth of three bacterial strains. Dill and garlic have been found to have different range of effects of volatile substances on bacterial growth. Volatile metabolites of dill and garlic differed in their effect on the sensitivity spectrum of bacteria. An attempt has been made to describe the obtained data mathematically. inedible potato biomass -- wheat straw -- bioconversion -- residual substrate -- biohumus
Аннотация: The feasibility of a two-stage bioconversion of inedible potato biomass into biohumus by oyster mushroom followed by worms was tested. As a raw material for biohumus production the inedible potato biomass in certain properties ranked below wheat straw. The most feasible method to convert the potato wastes into biohumus was to mix them with wheat straw at the mass ratio of 1:3 and then treat with mushrooms followed by worms. This gave a good yield of mushrooms. The biohumus produced from the mixture was suitable for use as a plant growth medium. (C) 2001 Elsevier Science Ltd. All rights reserved.

Аннотация: Various chronic inflammatory and necrotic processes in the liver parenchyma are accompanied by pathological morphofunctional changes, which are associated with hepatocyte death and, hyperplasia of the connective tissue. Regeneration of the liver parenchyma should include not only prevention of fibrosis, but also stimulation of hepatocyte proliferation. The adrenoceptor agonist dobutamine stimulated proliferative activity of cultured hepatocytes and prevented the development of postintoxication liver cirrhosis in mice produced by chronic poisoning with CCl4.

Аннотация: Stability of LSS based on biological regeneration of water, air and food subject to damaging factors is largely dependent on the behavior of the photosynthesizing component represented, mainly, by higher plants. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the tolerance of uneven-aged wheat and radish cenoses to temperature effects different in time and value. Estimation of thermal tolerance of plants demonstrated that exposure for 20 h to the temperature increasing to 45degreesC brought about irreversible damage both in photosynthetic processes (up to 80% of initial value) and the processes of growth and development. Kinetics of visible photosynthesis during exposure to elevated temperatures can be used to evaluate critical exposure time within the range of which the damage of metabolic processes is reversible. With varying light intensity and air temperature it is possible to find a time period admissible for the plants to stay under adverse conditions without considerable damage of metabolic processes. Аннотация: A mathematical model describing the interaction of plants and rhizospheric microorganisms on complete mineral medium at a higher CO2 level in the atmosphere was constructed. The positive effect of CO2-enrichment on the system plant - rhizospheric micro organisms was shown. The effect of rhizospheric microorganisms on plant growth at normal and high level of carbon dioxide was demonstrated. It was shown that the biomass of plant in the system is smaller than the biomass of plant growing without microorganisms. It was experimentally demonstrated that a simple ecosystem wheat - Pseudomonas putida - artificial soil develops and functions differently than its individual constituents in the case of a wheat-artificial soil system. With unlimited nutrition and a higher CO2 level (0.06%), plants with roots inoculated with micro organisms have a smaller biomass than plants that were not inoculated with micro organisms.

Аннотация: In experimental aquatic microcosms (AMCs), the population of the Escherichia coli strain Z905 harboring the recombinant plasmid pPHL7 (Ap(r)Lux(+)) was found to gradually accumulate AMC-adapted cells, which retained the plasmid but differed from the original cells in some biochemical and physiological characteristics. Both the original and the AMC-adapted E. coil cells could coexist with the native AMC microflora for one year or longer. When introduced into AMCs together with native pseudomonads, the AMC-adapted E. coil Z905-33 (pPHL7) cells were more competitive than the nonadapted cells.

Аннотация: Effect of the size of rhizospheric bacterial populations on germination of seeds and development of simple terrestrial "wheat plants - rhizospheric microorganisms - artificial soil" and "wheat plants artificial soil" systems has been studied. Experiments demonstrated that within specify ranges in the inoculate, the rhizospheric bacteria are capable of increasing the yield of germinated seeds and stimulate the growth of plantlets. Germination of seeds inoculated with bacteria was either stimulated, or inhibited or remained at control levels depending on the amount of bacteria. Plant biomass growth and total photoassimilation has been found to depend on the amount of bacteria on the plant roots: the higher the amount of bacteria on plant roots, the smaller is the biomass of plants but the total photoassimilation is, higher. Thus, depending on the amount of bacteria on the roots of plants the system either increases the biomass of plants or increases the total photoassimilation, i.e. "pumps" carbon through itself involving bacteria. Аннотация: The paper describes the composition of extracellular free fatty acids (FFAs) and intracellular fatty acids (FAs) in the enrichment cultures of the prokaryotic alga Spirulina platensis and the eukaryotic alga Chlorella vulgaris grown at optimal, supraoptimal, and suboptimal growth temperatures. With increasing growth temperature, the degree of unsaturation of the intracellular FAs of both algae decreased, while that of the extracellular FFAs of S. platensis increased. The composition of the extracellular FFAs of C vulgaris practically did not depend on the growth temperature.

Gas and substrate closure of the three component ecosystems with spatially separated components "producer-consumer-reducer" (Chl, vulgaris-Paramecium caudatum-B. acidocaldarius, two bacterial strains isolated from the associated microflora Chl. vulgaris) demonstrated that the functioning of the reducer component can be estimated by the catalase activity of microorganisms of this component. Аннотация: Plants in experiments on "man-higher plants" closed ecosystem (CES) have been demonstrated to have inhibited growth and reduced productivity due to three basic factors: prolonged usage of a permanent nutrient solution introduction into the nutrient medium of intra-system gray water, and closure of the system. Gray water was detrimental to plants the longer the nutrient solution was used. However, higher plant growth was mostly affected by the gaseous composition of the CES atmosphere, through accumulation of volatile substances. (C) 1997 COSPAR. Published by Elsevier Science Ltd.

Аннотация: Six-day-old colonies of Flavobacterium sp. 22 were studied by electron microscopy. Direct evidence was obtained of bacterial cell division across the entire colony volume, indicating that the colony growth of Flavobacterium sp. 22 is not purely peripheral. It is argued that the colony shape is determined not only by peripheral growth but also by physical forces acting upon a droplet of liquid on the surface. For bacterial colonies developing on solid nutrient media, the intercellular matrix plays the role of such a liquid.

The gas mixtures that contained from 5 to 20 vol % CO did not inhibit the key enzymes of PHA synthesis-beta-ketothiolase. acetoacetyl-CoA reductase, hydroxybutyrate dehydrogenase, and PHA synthase. In the presence of CO, cells accumulated up to 70-75 wt % PHA (with respect to the dry biomass) without any noticeable increase in the consumption of the gas substrate. Chromatographic-mass spectrometric analysis showed that the PHA synthesized by A. eutrophus is a copolymer containing more than 99 mol % beta-hydroxybutyrate and trace amounts of beta-hydroxyvalerate. The PHA synthesized under the conditions described did not differ from that synthesized by A. eutrophus cells from electrolytic hydrogen.

Аннотация: The vertical distribution of microorganisms during spring deep-water renewal in Lake Baikal was studied. The downward advection of trophogenic waters was found to create conditions for the extensive growth of microorganisms capable of decomposing and mineralizing organic carbon, nitrogen, and phosphorus in deep water layers. These processes occur annually at spring thermal bars near the underwater slope of Lake Baikal, whereas in its pelagic zone. the deep intrusions of waters rich in organic material are observed only in the years when enhanced deep-water renewal is accompanied by a high spring yield of phytoplankton.

Аннотация: Electron microscopy has shown that the colonies obtained as a result of joint growth of bacterial monocultures Flavobacterium sp. 56 and Bacillus cereus 60 consist of three main cell types. Two cell types of the mixed colonies preserve the fine structure specific for bacteria in the monocultures. At the same time, formation of a large amount of the third type of cells is stimulated, which occur as single cells in the monoculture Flavobacterium sp. 56. The cell types are not intermixed in the colony volume and have certain spatial positions.
