Аннотация: Zooplankton carcasses are ubiquitous in marine and freshwater systems, implicating the importance of non-predatory mortality, but both are often overlooked in ecological studies compared with predatory mortality. The development of several microscopic methods allows the distinction between live and dead zooplankton in field samples, and the reported percentages of dead zooplankton average 11.6 (minimum) to 59.8 (maximum) in marine environments, and 7.4 (minimum) to 47.6 (maximum) in fresh and inland waters. Common causes of non-predatory mortality among zooplankton include senescence, temperature change, physical and chemical stresses, parasitism and food-related factors. Carcasses resulting from non-predatory mortality may undergo decomposition leading to an increase in microbial production and a shift in microbial composition in the water column. Alternatively, sinking carcasses may contribute significantly to vertical carbon flux especially outside the phytoplankton growth seasons, and become a food source for the benthos. Global climate change is already altering freshwater ecosystems on multiple levels, and likely will have significant positive or negative effects on zooplankton non-predatory mortality. Better spatial and temporal studies of zooplankton carcasses and non-predatory mortality rates will improve our understanding of this important but under-appreciated topic.

Аннотация: Background Canine parvovirus (CPV) is now recognized as a serious threat to the dog breeding industry worldwide. Currently used CPV vaccines all have their specific drawbacks, prompting a search for alternative safe and effective vaccination strategies such as subunit vaccine. VP2 protein is the major antigen targeted for developing CPV subunit vaccine, however, its production in baculovirus expression system remains challenging due to the insufficient yield. Therefore, our study aims to increase the VP2 protein production by using an improved baculovirus expression system and to evaluate the immunogenicity of the purified VP2 protein in mice. Results The results showed that high-level expression of the full length VP2 protein was achieved using our modified baculovirus expression system. The recombinant virus carrying two copies of VP2 gene showed the highest expression level, with a productivity of 186 mg/L, which is about 1.4-1.6 fold that of the recombinant viruses carrying only one copy. The purified protein reacted with Mouse anti-His tag monoclonal antibody and Rabbit anti-VP2 polyclonal antibody. BALB/c mice were intramuscularly immunized with purified VP2 protein twice at 2 week intervals. After vaccination, VP2 protein could induce the mice produce high level of hemagglutination inhibition antibodies. Conclusions Full length CPV VP2 protein was expressed at high level and purified efficiently. Moreover, it stimulated mice to produce high level of antibodies with hemmaglutination inhibition properties. The VP2 protein expressed in this study could be used as a putative economic and efficient subunit vaccine against CPV infection.

Аннотация: Morphological analysis of muksun Coregonus muksun of the Khatanga River basin revealed that along with its typical high-density-rakered form, individuals of the low-density-rakered form also live in this region. Analysis of the genetic polymorphism of three marker regions of mitochondrial (ND1 and COI fragments) and nuclear (ITS1) DNA indicates the polyphyletic origin of these forms. The revealed low level of genetic differentiation of muksun and whitefish C. lavaretus, along with the available data on the absence of clear diagnostic species characteristics, suggest that they belong to the same biological species C. lavaretus.

Аннотация: A concept is formulated on ecological and biophysics as a scientific discipline which studies physical processes and phenomena resulting from the functioning of live supra-organism systems. Three main directions of ecological biophysics are defined: creation of methods of monitoring ecosystems on the basis of probing biophysical fields (fields of bioluminescence and fluorescence); mathematical and physical modelling; and study of the role of live organisms in hydrophysical processes on the ecosystem scale. Examples are given of the realization of the ecologo-biophysical approach in research into the ecosystems of the world ocean, Lake Baikal and the Dnieper and Yenisei reservoirs. В© 1994.

Аннотация: Spatial distribution of Gammarus lacustris in Lake Shira and growth of young specimens that feed on lake biota were studied. The amphipods have been shown to inhabit the littoral, sublittoral and the upper aphytal zones of the lake on stony-sandy soil and silted sand. The young and adult individuals stay apart. The young live in submerged or semi-submerged vegetation in the littoral, the adults in the sublittoral and upper aphytal zones. Maximum density of amphipods was encountered in the areas influenced by human activity. The feeding experiments revealed that the lake plankton is a more important food source for G. lacustris than any other food species. The specific growth rate measured was 0.039 d-1, with a length increment 0.095 mm d-1.

Аннотация: We studied the number of midges (Chironomidae, Diptera) on the terrestrial area where flows of organic matter and essential polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA) provided by the emergence of the amphibiotic insects from saline steppe Lake Shira were dispersed. Records of midge specimens captured on sticky traps showed that 50 and 95 percent of the emerged adults of the Glyptotendipes and Polypedilum genera occurred within 25-m and 100-m strips surrounding the lakeshore, respectively. The areas of these strips were calculated along with quantification of flows of chironomid biomass and essential PUFA per land area unit based on data of previously measured export. For the 25-m lake-surrounding strip, where 50% of midges swarmed, the annual import of dry biomass and PUFA accounted for 1.5 g · m-2 and 15 mg · m-2, respectively. Further, the 100-m wide strip, where 95% of the midges were registered, got the annual flows of 0.7 g dry weight · m-2 and 7.2 mg PUFA · m-2. The calculated values of PUFA import were similar to measurements in relatively productive landscapes. The number of midges captured on the site located near the most productive lake part was the lowest among all the studied near-lake sites. This site of the lakeshore is part of a national preserve, where a great number of insectivorous birds live or stop. The lower abundance of swarming chironomids on this site was likely related to intensive consumption by terrestrial animals, i.e., birds, for obtaining necessary doses of essential compounds. © Siberian Federal University. Аннотация: The database "BiolumBase" is designed for the selection and systematization of available world information on microorganisms containing bioluminescent systems; it includes two sections: "natural" and "transgenic" luminous microorganisms. At present, logic schemes of divisions, classification of the objects, presentation of characteristics, and the inputs of relative information, as well as the necessary program modules including links to the database, are developed. The database is constructed on the basis of published data and our own experimental results; the subsequent linkage of the database to the Internet is envisaged. Users will be able to obtain not only the catalogues of strains but also information concerning the properties and functions of the known species of luminous bacteria, the structure, regulatory mechanisms, and application of bioluminescent systems and genetically engineered constructions with live genes, as well as to find references and to search strains by using any set of attributes. The database will provide information that is of interest for the development of microbial ecology and biotechnology, in particular, for the prediction of biological hazard from the application of transgenic strains.

Аннотация: We have studied the fatty acid (FA) contents and composition of cladocerans and copepods from warm and cold lakes. We have found no significant differences in FA percent levels and per carbon contents of cladocerans from warm and cold lakes or of copepods from warm and cold lakes. A discriminant analysis showed that all cladocerans differed from all copepods mainly due to the content of docosahexaenoic acid. Compared to cladocerans, copepods had significantly higher levels of all C22 polyunsaturated FA. Thus, we conclude that cladocerans and copepods in all environments had comparatively invariant taxon-specific compositions and contents of long-chain highly unsaturated fatty acids (HUFAs). According to HUFA content, all studied copepods can be regarded as a valuable food for fish.

Аннотация: Experiments with macromycetes Pleurotus ostreatus, Neonothopanus nambi, and Agaricus bisporus demonstrated for the first time that live mycelium of mushrooms, cultivated on a liquid culture medium, can efficiently take up dissolved 241Am in its biomass. Biochemical fractionation of the mycelium biomass demonstrated for the first time that the major fraction (up to 90%) of 241Am accumulated in the mycelium is bonded to structural polysaccharides of the cell walls. The sorption capacity of cell wall polysaccharides for 241Am is 2.7-3.6 times higher than that of the initial mycelium biomass, and the activity concentration of 241Am in the polysaccharides reached 950 Bq g-1 dry weight. © 2015 Pleiades Publishing, Inc.
