Аннотация: Asynchronous vertical migrations of calanoid copepods Arctodiaptomus salinus were studied in two stratified lakes in the south of Siberia using the method of two-section enclosures. It was found that the presence of a pronounced thermocline and a depth maximum of phytoplankton (Lake Shira) contributes to the appearance of intensive individual migrations of copepods between areas of the epi- and hypolimnion. Аннотация: Three levels of chemical communications involved plankton Crustacea are considered: 1) Influence of zooplankton excretion on phytoplankton; 2) Influence of zooplankton excretion on the individuals of the same or other species of the same trophic level; 3) Influence of chemical cues released by predatory zooplankton and fish on herbivorous zooplankton. The data on the influence of excreted cues on some physiological (growth, reproduction, feeding, etc.) and behavioural (vertical and horizontal migrations) characters of planktonic crustaceans are presented. Ecological role and chemistry cues responsible for the interactions of different trophic levels can be different. It is considered that chemical communications in aquatic ecosystems can be provided with: 1) Species-specific cues that strictly influence particular biological functions (communication system of feromone type); 2) Non-specific cues that strictly influence particular functions (system of regulator, that act at the whole ecosystem as the hormonal system of an organism). 3) Non-specific substances with broad (non-specidic) influence - toxic substances of "biocondition substances" according to classification of Novikov and Kharlamova (2000).

Аннотация: The vertical and seasonal distributions of the phytoflagellate Cryptomonas spp., and its most common, the planktonic ciliate predators (Oligotrichida, Scuticociliatida, Hypotrichida and Prostomatida) were investigated in chemocline region of small saline, meromictic lake Shunet (Siberia, Russia) during 2003 and 2005. The lake has a pronounced chemocline, with abundance of purple and green sulphur bacteria. Vertical distribution of the Cryptomonas populations near the oxic/anoxic boundary layer was studied at close intervals in water sampled using a hydraulically operated thin-layer sampler. In both summer and winter, Cryptomonas peaked in water stratum 5-10 cm above anoxic zone or in the anoxic zone water column in the chemocline (about 5 m). Ciliate densities and biomass were also much higher in chemocline than in mixolimnion. The range of diurnal migration of Cryptomonas population was not very wide, and it was restricted to layers with high light intensity. The ciliates were sometimes detected above the upper border of the anoxic zone but also several centimetres below this zone. В© 2010 Springer Science+Business Media B.V.

Аннотация: The new model was proposed to study the dynamic of spatially distributed populations with nonrandom migrating individuals. All migrations are resulted in maximization of the average net reproduction rate taking into account the cost of migration. The model belongs to a box type: individuals migrate between two stations and have complete information about living conditions both in the stations of residence and migration. The information is determined by dependence of reproduction rate on the abundance of individuals in the station. Numerical experiments showed that taking into account the goal-directed migrations caused the following effects: significant extension of the value of external conditions leading to the stable existence of population; increase in the average abundance of population; broadening of the observed set of dynamic regimes. The limitation of the model application are discussed.

Аннотация: The bright bioluminescence of copepod Metridia longa is conditioned by a small secreted coelenterazinedependent luciferase (MLuc). To date, three isoforms of MLuc differing in length, sequences, and some properties were cloned and successfully applied as high sensitive bioluminescent reporters. In this work, we report cloning of a novel group of genes from M. longa encoding extremely psychrophilic isoforms of MLuc (MLuc2-type). The novel isoforms share only similar to 54-64% of protein sequence identity with the previously cloned isoforms and, consequently, are the product of a separate group of paralogous genes. The MLuc2 isoform with consensus sequence was produced as a natively folded protein using baculovirus/ insect cell expression system, purified, and characterized. The MLuc2 displays a very high bioluminescent activity and high thermostability similar to those of the previously characterized M. longa luciferase isoform MLuc7. However, in contrast to MLuc7 revealing the highest activity at 12-17 degrees C and 0.5 M NaCl, the bioluminescence optima of MLuc2 isoforms are at similar to 5 degrees C and 1 M NaCl. The MLuc(2) adaptation to cold is also accompanied by decrease of melting temperature and affinity to substrate suggesting a more conformational flexibility of a protein structure. The luciferase isoforms with different temperature optima may provide adaptability of the M. longa bioluminescence to the changes of water temperature during diurnal vertical migrations. Аннотация: Populations of brown trout in the Mzymta River and its tributaries include anadromous (mainly female) and resident (mainly males) fish. Some resident males in the basin of the Mzymty River attain sexual maturity at the age 1+, and resident females mature at the age 2+ or 3+. The maximum age of resident fish is 4+ in the samples studied. Migrations of anadromous brown trout to the sea occur at the ages 1+, 2+, or 3+. Future spawners spend from 1 to 4 years at feeding grounds in the sea. Smolts of the population are characterized by performing not only spring but also autumn migrations to the sea. One smolt specimen has been detected upstream from the dam in the river where spawners of anadromous brown trout do not migrate; this means that the capability for sea migrations persists long in the population represented only by resident specimens of brown trout. The diversity of life cycles and ecological forms in populations of brown trout is not lower than in populations of brown trout in Northern and Western Europe. The comparison of the data obtained with published data makes it possible to come to the conclusion about the high plasticity of ontogenesis of Black Sea brown trout.

Ключевые слова (''Своб.индексиров.''): docosahexaenoic acid--ecomorphological factors--eicosapentaenoic acid--nutritive value--phylogenetic factors
Аннотация: Fish are recognized as the main source of physiologically important omega-3 long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acids, namely, eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), for human nutrition. However, muscle tissue contents of these fatty acids in diverse fish species, i.e., their nutritive value for humans, varied within two orders of magnitude. We reviewed contents of EPA and DHA, measured by similar methods using an internal standard during chromatography as mg per g of wet mass in 172 fish species belonging to 16 orders, to evaluate probable variations in phylogenetic and ecological drivers. EPA + DHA content varied from 25.6 mg g(-1) of wet mass (Sardinops sagax) to 0.12 mg g(-1) (Gymnura spp.). Multidimensional redundancy analysis revealed that among phylogenetic, ecomorphological and abiotic environmental factors, the highest proportion of variation contribution belonged to the shared contribution of sets of phylogenetic and ecomorphological factors. Specifically, the highest values of EPA + DHA content were characteristic of fish belonging to the orders Clupeiformes or Salmoniformes, were pelagic fast swimmers, ate zooplankton and inhabited marine waters or migrated from fresh to marine waters (anadromous migrations). High EPA and DHA content in muscle tissues of the above species appeared to be a metabolic adaptation for fast continuous swimming. In contrast to common beliefs, our meta-analysis did not support the significant influence of higher trophic levels (piscivory) and cold environments (homeoviscous adaptation) on EPA and DHA content in fish. However, many causes of high and low levels of physiologically important fatty acids in certain fish species remained unexplained and require evaluation in future studies.

Аннотация: This paper elucidates the features of colonization by whitefish (Coregonus lavaretus L.) of waterbodies of the European part of Russia in relation to Pleistocene glaciation. Based on the data on the frequencies and phylogenetic relationships of mitochondrial DNA haplotypes, a significant role of migrants from the western periglacial refugia is shown. The first large refugium was located at the North Atlantic; the second was at the South-Eastern Baltic. Until the last glaciation, with the maximum at about 20000 years ago, migrations from Siberia took place as well. However, at present the descendants of these migrants in the waterbodies of Northwestern Russia are not the dominants. The size of the refugium where the population lived prior to expansion may be an important condition for the successful spreading of common whitefish.

Аннотация: Genetic diversity and colonization routes of noble salmons were studied using a partial nucleotide sequence of the mitochondrialCOIgene. The brown troutS. trutta, which is the most ancient species of the genus, was concluded to originate from the modern southeastern Pontic-Caspian area, which is currently inhabited by members of the subspeciesS. trutta oxianus. Migrating westward while the Paratethys was in existence (5-34 million years ago), species of the genus colonized ancient water bodies in the modern Mediterranean basin and formed many isolated populations that survived desiccation of the Mediterranean Sea (5-6 million years ago). The Strait of Gibraltar mediated brown trout migrations to Northern Europe; the subspeciesS. trutta truttabelongs to a relatively young phylogenetic lineage of the species. A separate brown trout lineage, currently classified as the subspeciesS. trutta labrax, formed most likely in the area of the modern Danube basin, which was a relatively separate part of the Paratethys and was sometimes isolated as the Pannonian Lake. A highly divergent phylogenetic lineage of Atlantic salmon (S. salar) haplotypes originates from a haplotype of the brown trout that inhabited the area of the modern Strait of Gibraltar.
