Soil organic matter -- Continual model of soil -- Soil formation
Аннотация: The study proposes a model of transformation and decomposition of soil organic matter, based on using the rate of matter transformation as a continual scale of its transformation degree. The model is represented by one partial derivative differential equation that has an analytical solution. This model has only two adjustable parameters, while the number of experimentally determined parameters depends on how detailed the description of the plant litter is supposed to be. The model has been tested, and model parameters have been evaluated by comparing model predictions with the literature data on the stock of soil organic matter in different types of ecosystems. Аннотация: A mathematical model concerning the interaction of plants and rhizospheric microorganisms on complete mineral medium and under nitrogen limitation has been constructed. The model takes into account the closeness of plants and microorganisms in terms of the matter released by the plant and consumed by the microorganisms. The effect of rhizospheric microorganisms on plant growth with normal carbon dioxide and complete mineral medium has been demonstrated. Plants interacting with microorganisms have a greater biomass than plants growing without microorganisms. Wheat growth stimulation by metabolites of rhizospheric microorganisms under laboratory conditions on artificial soil has been experimentally demonstrated (Pechurkin, 1997). Under nitrogen limitation , the biomass of plants, with or without microorganisms, is identical, and is substantially reduced as compared with the medium with standard nitrogen. В© 1999 COSPAR. Аннотация: The synthesis of polyhydroxybutyrate by the carboxydobacterium Seliberia carboxydohydrogena under various growth conditions was studied. The bacterium was able to accumulate poly-beta-hydroxybutyric acid and a heteropolymer that was a product of copolymerization of hydroxybutyric and hydroxyvaleric acids. Nitrogen and sulfur exerted the strongest effect on polymer accumulation in carboxydobacteria: The maximum polymer concentrations in cells reached 28%. Specimens of polyhydroxybutyrate films were obtained, and their degradability by soil microflora was shown.

biodegradable polymers -- controlled delivery systems -- fertilisers -- polyhydroxyakanoates
Аннотация: BACKGROUND: Increasing use of mineral fertilisers can lead to accumulation of fertilisers in soil, water and foodstuffs. One of the approaches to preventing these problems is to develop controlled release forms of fertilisers. RESULTS: Experimental formulations of the nitrogen fertiliser urea loaded in a degradable matrix of the natural polymer poly-3-hydroxybutyrate (P3HB) in the form of films, pellets and coated granules were constructed and investigated. Nitrogen release into soil occurred as the polymer was degraded, and it was dependent on the geometry of the carrier and the amount of nitrogen loaded in it, showing that nitrogen release can last for 30 days or longer and that release rates can be controlled by varying the fabrication technique employed. P3HB/urea formulations have a favourable effect on the soil microbial community. The use of embedded urea has a beneficial influence on the growth of creeping bentgrass (Agrostis stolonifera) and lettuce (Latuca sativa) and reduces removal of nitrogen with drain water. CONCLUSION: The slow-release nitrogen formulations developed in this study can be buried in soil together with seeds preventing nitrogen deficiency. The use of such slow-release formulations can decrease the amounts of chemicals in the environment and prevent their adverse effects on the biosphere. © 2016 Society of Chemical Industry. © 2016 Society of Chemical Industry

Autotrophic synthesis -- Cupriavidus eutrophus -- Polyhydroxyalkanoates
Аннотация: Synthesis of polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHAs) by a new strain of Cupriavidus - Cupriavidus eutrophus B-10646 - was investigated under autotrophic growth conditions. Under chemostat, at the specific flow rate D=0.1h-1, on sole carbon substrate (CO2), with nitrogen, sulfur, phosphorus, potassium, and manganese used as growth limiting elements, the highest poly(3-hydroxybutyrate) [P(3HB)] yields were obtained under nitrogen deficiency. In batch autotrophic culture, in the fermenter with oxygen mass transfer coefficient 0.460h-1, P(3HB) yields reached 85% of dry cell weight (DCW) and DCW reached 50g/l. Concentrations of supplementary PHA precursor substrates (valerate, hexanoate, ?-butyrolactone) and culture conditions were varied to produce, for the first time under autotrophic growth conditions, PHA ter- and tetra-polymers with widely varying major fractions of 3-hydroxybutyrate, 4-hydroxybutyrate, 3-hydroxyvalerate, and 3-hydroxyhexanoate monomer units. Investigation of the high-purity PHA specimens showed significant differences in their physicochemical and physicomechanical properties. В© 2013 Elsevier Ltd.

Аннотация: The chemical composition of water conditioned by colonies of Moina macrocopa and involved in the regulation of their life cycle was analyzed in comparison with water samples from natural water bodies. Dechlorinated tap water was used as the control medium. The results showed that metabolism of crustaceans leads to an increase in the concentrations of phosphorus and nitrogen in all forms, the appearance of protein and carbohydrate fractions, and changes in the composition of lipid fractions in the water conditioned by their colonies. The contents of all organic components are very low, which makes their identification difficult. Concentrations of substances identified in the conditioned water do not exceed those occurring in nature.

Аннотация: Colonies produced by a consortium of nitrifying bacteria were studied using fight and electron microscopy. The colonies were obtained by direct plating of inoculum from a two-stage nonsterile chemostat fermenter and by repeatedly passing the microbial community of the fermenter through selective media containing ammonium or nitrite. The colonies studied can be characterized by a specific combination of six types of cells differing in their ultrastructure and spatial location within the colony. The types of cells occurring within a given colony were found to depend on the nitrogen compound present in the medium. As a result of our study, morphological features of colonial bacterial communities were identified. The proposed approach can be viewed as a method to describe microbial associations and communities.

Аннотация: The work analyzes functioning of a "producer-consumer" closed aquatic system with spatially separated links, where each component consisted of two species. Producers in the system were the microalgae of Chlorella vulgaris and Scenedesmus sp., consumers - Paramecium caudatum infusoria and Brachionus sp. rotifers. In the experiment the competing predators were consuming on a mixed culture of algae, and the competition of algae was studied under nitrogen limitation. Under these conditions competitiveness of Scenedesmus was higher than that of Chlorella vulgaris. Metabolism products of Scenedesmus algae have been found to have negative effect on reproduction of Paramecium caudatum protozoa. Predator population dynamics in the "consumer" link demonstrated that the rotifers that consume two algal species are more competitive compared to protozoa feeding on chlorella only. (C) 2001 COSPAR. Аннотация: This study addresses competition between the Paramecium bursaria and zoochlorella - endosymbiosis and the infusoria Paramecium caudatum in a closed aquatic system. The system is a natural model of a simple biotic cycle. P. bursaria consumes glucose and oxygen released by its zoochlorella and releases nitrogenous compounds and carbon dioxide necessary for algal photosynthesis. P. caudatum was fed on bacteria. It was shown that the infusoria P. bursaria united in one cycle with Chlorella had a higher competitive ability than P. caudatum. With any initial percentage of the infusoria in the mixed culture, the end portion of P. bursaria reached 90 - 99%, which was significantly higher than the end portion of the P. caudatum population. It is assumed that the sustenance expenditures of P. caudatum were greater than those of the endosymbiotic paramecium, i.e. the closing of the components into a biotic cycle leads to a decrease in sustenance expenditures. Lake Shunet -- metagenomics -- archaeal -- bacterial and viral assemblages -- meromictic lake
Аннотация: Microorganisms are critical to maintaining stratified biogeochemical characteristics in meromictic lakes; however, their community composition and potential roles in nutrient cycling are not thoroughly described. Both metagenomics and metaviromics were used to determine the composition and capacity of archaea, bacteria, and viruses along the water column in the landlocked meromictic Lake Shunet in Siberia. Deep sequencing of 265 Gb and high-quality assembly revealed a near-complete genome corresponding to Nonlabens sp. sh3vir. in a viral sample and 38 bacterial bins (0.2-5.3 Mb each). The mixolimnion (3.0 m) had the most diverse archaeal, bacterial, and viral communities, followed by the monimolimnion (5.5 m) and chemocline (5.0 m). The bacterial and archaeal communities were dominated by Thiocapsa and Methanococcoides, respectively, whereas the viral community was dominated by Siphoviridae. The archaeal and bacterial assemblages and the associated energy metabolism were significantly related to the various depths, in accordance with the stratification of physicochemical parameters. Reconstructed elemental nutrient cycles of the three layers were interconnected, including co-occurrence of denitrification and nitrogen fixation in each layer and involved unique processes due to specific biogeochemical properties at the respective depths. According to the gene annotation, several pre-dominant yet unknown and uncultured bacteria also play potentially important roles in nutrient cycling. Reciprocal BLAST analysis revealed that the viruses were specific to the host archaea and bacteria in the mixolimnion. This study provides insights into the bacterial, archaeal, and viral assemblages and the corresponding capacity potentials in Lake Shunet, one of the three meromictic lakes in central Asia. Lake Shunet was determined to harbor specific and diverse viral, bacterial, and archaeal communities that intimately interacted, revealing patterns shaped by indigenous physicochemical parameters.

    Constructing Slow-Release Formulations of Ammonium Nitrate Fertilizer Based on Degradable Poly(3-hydroxybutyrate) / A. N. Boyandin [et al.] // J. Agric. Food Chem. - 2017. - Vol. 65, Is. 32. - P6745-6752, DOI 10.1021/acs.jafc.7b01217 . - ISSN 0021-8561

Аннотация: The present study describes construction and investigation of experimental formulations of ammonium nitrate embedded in a matrix of degradable natural polymer poly-3-hydroxybutyrate [P(3HB)] and P(3HB) blended with wood flour shaped as tablets, some of them coated with P(3HB). Kinetics of ammonium release into soil as dependent on the composition of the polymer matrix was investigated in laboratory experiments. The rates of fertilizer release from formulations coated with a biopolymer layer were considerably (two months or longer) slower than the rates of fertilizer release from uncoated formulations, while release from polymer and composite (polymer/wood flour) formulations occurred with comparable rates. The use of the experimental formulations in laboratory ecosystems with wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) was more effective than application of free ammonium nitrate. The advantage of the slow-release fertilizer formulations is that they are buried in soil together with the seeds, and the fertilizer remains effective over the first three months of plant growth. The use of such slow-release formulations will reduce the amounts of chemicals released into the environment, which will curb their accumulation in food chains of ecosystems and mitigate their adverse effects on the biosphere. © 2017 American Chemical Society.

   YENISEI RIVER

   CARBON-CYCLE

Аннотация: We studied biogeochemical characteristics, including organic carbon and nitrogen contents, fatty acid (FA) composition, stable isotope ratios, and primary production in conjunction with species composition of bacterioplankton, using next generation sequencing, in the Yenisei River along a distance similar to 1800km. Basing on FA composition of particulate organic matter (POM) and on other indicators of sources of POM, the river was subdivided into four sections. The upper section 1, situated in mountain region, was the net source of high-quality autochthonous organic matter, produced primarily by diatoms and partly consumed by specialized bacteria species. Section 2 in plain taiga was net sink of high quality allochthonous and autochthonous organic matter, produced by cyanobacteria and green algae. Section 3 was net sink of organic matter, primarily allochthonous, consumed by the specialized species of bacteria. The lowest section 4, situated in tundra, was primarily the conduit of recalcitrant terrestrial organic matter, but also the net source of autochthonous organic matter, produced by diatoms. Biogeochemical traits of sections of the Yenisei River evidently shaped dominant species composition of bacterioplankton of these sections. Regarding the biogeochemical and microbiological data, we concluded that the Yenisei River ecosystem complexly combines features of river mosaic, river continuum, and "neutral pipe."

Аннотация: The data set obtained in 19 experiments aimed at studying the growth of Daphnia of the longispina group on natural seston of the Bugach water reservoir (Krasnoyarsk) was used to analyze the relationship between the parameters of somatic and generative growth of the studied animals and the amount and quality of food. Depending on the quality of the seston, two models of the development of Daphnia were proposed. It was demonstrated that, despite the existing positive correlation between somatic and generative growth, a noticeable fraction of the variations of the specific rate of generative production is determined by external factors of the environment, such as the relative content of N and ?-linolenic acid (N: C and ALA: C) in seston.
