Аннотация: COVID-19 has specific characteristics that distinguish this disease from many other infec-tions. We suggest that the pathogenesis of severe forms of COVID-19 can be associated with acidosis. This review article discusses several mechanisms potentially linking the damaging effects of COVID-19 with acidosis and shows the existence of a vicious cycle between the development of hypoxia and acidosis in COVID-19 patients. At the early stages of the disease, inflammation, difficulty in gas exchange in the lungs and thrombosis collectively contribute to the onset of acidosis. In accordance with the Verigo-Bohr effect, a decrease in blood pH leads to a decrease in oxygen saturation, which contributes to the exacerbation of acidosis and results in a deterioration of the patient’s condition. A decrease in pH can also cause conformational changes in the S-protein of the virus and thus lead to a decrease in the affinity and avidity of protective antibodies. Hypoxia and acidosis lead to dysregu-lation of the immune system and multidirectional pro-and anti-inflammatory reactions, resulting in the development of a “cytokine storm”. In this review, we highlight the potential importance of supporting normal blood pH as an approach to COVID-19 therapy. © 2021 by the authors. Licensee MDPI, Basel, Switzerland.

Аннотация: Productivity values, sodium accumulation in aboveground biomass, and photosynthetic indices of watercress (Nasturtium officinale) leaves were investigated under conditions resembling artificial closed ecological systems (CES). The seedlings were grown on nutrient media with various NaCl concentrations (0.7, 1.4, and 1.8 g/L) for 7, 14, and 19 days after transferring them to saline solutions. The productivity of plants on the seventh day of their growth on saline media did not differ from that of control plants. The decrease in plant productivity was noted in all the treatments starting from the 14th day after transferring the plants to saline solutions. When NaCl concentration in the nutrient solution was raised from 0.7 to 1.8 g/L, a significant increase in relative Na+ content in plant tissues was observed, regardless of the duration of NaCl treatment. A substantial decrease in chlorophyll (a + b) to carotenoid content ratio was noted on the seventh and 14th days in plants grown at 1.8 g/L NaCl. In plants treated for 7 days with 0.7 and 1.4 g/L NaCl, the content of chlorophylls a and b and carotenoids was found to increase, which indicates the tolerance of N. officinale to CES conditions. The relative content of chlorophylls a and b in the light-harvesting chlorophyll (a + b) complex was independent of the extent of salinity. The maximum quantum yield of photosystem II reaction in N. officinale plants had typically high values (Y(II)(max) of 0.755 +/- 0.007). Using the Imaging Maxi version of the pulse amplitude-modulated (PAM) fluorometer, it was found that light curves for the effective quantum yield of photochemical and nonphotochemical fluorescence quenching (Y(II) and Y(NPQ), respectively) differed appreciably between the salt-treated and untreated plants in the case of long-term cultivation (19 days) at 0.7 and 1.4 g/L NaCl. The treatment with 1.8 g/L NaCl for the period from 14 to 19 days had no effect on light curves of Y(II) and Y(NPQ). It is argued that N. officinale can be used as a source of NaCl for humans under CES conditions.

Аннотация: For the first time, seasonal changes in the content of total lipids (TLs) and phospholipids (PLs) were studied in fodder plants growing in Central Yakutia—a perennial cereal, smooth brome (Bromopsis inermis L.), and an annual cereal, common oat (Avena sativa L.). Both species have concentrated TLs and PLs in autumn under cold hardening. In addition, a significant increase in the content of fatty acids (FAs) of B. inermis was observed during the autumn decrease in temperature. The Yakutian horses, which fed on cereals enriched with nutrients preserved by natural cold (green cryo-fodder), accumulated significant amounts of 18:2n-6 and 18:3n-3, the total content of which in cereals was 75% of the total FA content. We found differences in the distribution of these two FAs in different tissues of the horses. Thus, liver was rich in 18:2n-6, while muscle and adipose tissues accumulated mainly 18:3n-3. Such a distribution may indicate different roles of these FAs in the metabolism of the horses. According to FA content, meat of the Yakutian horses is a valuable dietary product. © 2020 by the authors. Licensee MDPI, Basel, Switzerland.

Аннотация: Accumulation of essential/beneficial and non-essential chemical elements by submerged (Stuckenia pectinata (L.) Borner) and emergent (Phragmites australis (Cav.) Trin. ex Steud.) rooted macrophytes in three water bodies was studied as dependent on water salinity (specific conductivity) and main environmental factors (temperature, pH of water, growing period, element contents in water and sediments). Inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometry (ICP - OES) was used for the element detection in the plants, sediments, and water. Multivariate statistics redundancy analysis (RDA) showed that investigated factors together explained 37.8 - 44.7% and 29.9 - 42.6% of the essential/beneficial and non-essential elements variability, respectively, whereas salinity was one of the main factors determining the accumulation of a number of elements (Mg, S, Na, Li, Sr, Sb) by the macrophytes. A decrease in the essential element contents (K, P, N, Cu, Zn) was observed in both species of the macrophytes during the growing season. Environmental factors (salinity, growing period, and pH) were more significant than the element contents in water and the sediments for the essential/beneficial element accumulation by two species of the macrophytes. The element contents in the sediments to a greater extent determined non-essential element accumulation by P. australis than by S. pectinata. The study showed that the efficiency of using P. australis and S. pectinata for remediation of aquatic ecosystems contaminated by heavy metals should not decrease with a salinity increase. © 2020 Elsevier Masson SAS

Аннотация: The study investigates toxic effects of the fungicide tebuconazole (TEB) on Fusarium-infected wheat (Triticum aestivum) plants based on the morphological characteristics of root apices and changes in the integrated parameters of redox homeostasis, including the contents of free proline and products of peroxidation of proteins (carbonylated proteins, CP) and lipids (malondialdehyde, MDA) in roots. In two-day-old wheat sprouts infected by Fusarium graminearum, the levels of proline, CP, and border cells of root apices are higher than in roots of uninfected sprouts by a factor of 1.4, 8.0, and 3, respectively. The triazole fungicide tebuconazole (TEB) at the concentrations of 0.01, 0.10, and 1.00 ?g ml?1 of medium causes a dose-dependent decrease in the number of border cells. The study of the effects of TEB and fusarium infection on wheat plants in a 30-day experiment shows that the effect of the fungicide TEB on redox homeostasis in wheat roots varies depending on the plant growth stage and is significantly different in ecosystems with soil and plants infected by Fusarium phytopathogens. The study of the morphology of root apices shows that the toxic effects of TEB and fusarium infection are manifested in the destructive changes in root apices and the degradation of the root tip mantle. © 2018 Elsevier Masson SAS

Аннотация: To create reliable Closed Ecological Life Support Systems (CELSS) it is necessary to have models which can predict CELSS dynamic with good accuracy. However it was shown that conventional ecological models cannot describe CELSS correctly if it is closed by more than one element. This problem can be solved by means more complex models than conventional ones - so called flexible metabolism models. However it is possible that CELSS also can be described correctly in "semi-conventional" framework - when only one trophic level is described by flexible metabolism model. Another problem in CELSS modeling is existence of different and incompatible hypotheses about relationships between plants growth rate and amounts of nutrients (functional responses). Difficulty of testing these hypotheses is associated with multi-nutrient dependency of growth rate and comprehensive experimental studies are expensive and time-consuming. This work is devoted to testing the hypothesis that "semi-conventional" approach is enough to describe CELSS, and to planning the discrimination experiment on selecting correct type of the plant's functional response. To do that three different models of plants (one flexible and two conventional) were investigated both in the scope of CELSS model, and in hemostat model. Numerical simulations show that each of the models has typical patterns which can be determined in experiment with real plants. © Published under licence by IOP Publishing Ltd.

Аннотация: Effects of variable levels of photosynthetically active radiation (PAR) and NaCl concentrations, typical of closed ecological life support systems, on growth of Salicornia europaea L. plants, CO2 exchange, mineral composition, and the content of malondialdehyde (MDA) and photosynthetic pigments were investigated. The plants were grown for 25 days at different salinities of nutrient Knop solution (171, 342, and 513 mM NaCl) under two PAR levels (690 and 1150 ?mol/(m2 s)). At PAR of 690 ?mol/(m2 s), the plant productivity did not show significant changes at increasing salinities; at 1150 ?mol/(m2 s), the maximal productivity was observed at NaCl concentrations of 171 and 342 mM. The increase in NaCl concentration from 171 to 513 mM in the nutrient solution led to a substantial increase in the relative Na content in aboveground organs at PAR level of 1150 ?mol/(m2 s). The MDA content in aboveground organs by the end of the growth period was independent of PAR intensity. The content of photosynthetic pigments in the assimilatory tissue decreased with the increase in salinity from 342 to 513 mM NaCl at PAR level of 1150 ?mol/(m2 s) but not at the lower irradiance. The combination of 1150 ?mol/(m2 s) PAR intensity with the salinity as high as 342 mM NaCl was found to be the most effective for optimal productivity of S. europaea plants. © 2016, Pleiades Publishing, Ltd.

Аннотация: Application of pulse-amplitude-modulation (PAM) fluorometers for measuring slow stages of chlorophyll fluorescence induction (CFI) is considered. With an example of Triticum aestuvum L. plants grown under continuous illumination at a photon flux density of 600 μmol/(m2 s) photosynthetically active radiation (PAR), the CFI curves were analyzed with leaves of various ages as a function of actinic light intensity. The fluorometer PAM-2100 was applied for measurements of CFI curves. The characteristic peaks of CFI curves in wheat leaves were most conspicuous and had the largest amplitudes at 600–800 μmol/(m2 s) PAR, which corresponds to the middle range of actinic light intensities employed in PAM-2100 fluorometers. In plants exposed to favorable and stressful conditions, the developmental stages may proceed at different rates; thus, the comparison of fluorescence parameters for leaves of equal calendar age but having different physiological states may provide ambiguous data. Therefore, the feasibility of recording CFI curves of different types is quite important for rapid diagnostics of the age and state of plant leaves, as well as for adequate physiological conclusions. © 2016, Pleiades Publishing, Ltd.

Аннотация: Wheat (Triticum sativus L.) seedlings of various ages (2- to 16-day-old plants) were used to study age-dependent changes in the chlorophyll fluorescence induction (CFI) at various light intensities during flu- orescence measurements. Plants were raised in a growth chamber using hydroponics with expanded clay, controlled environmental conditions, and 690 A mu mol/(m(2) s) photon flux density (PFD) of photosynthetically active radiation (PAR). Parameters of CFI were determined under actinic PFD of 380, 580, 820, and 1340 A mu mol/(m(2) s) PAR. The fifth leaf from the stem base, exposed to uniform lighting, was sampled for measurements. This leaf emerged at the plant age of 16 days. Based on fluorescence data, we calculated the maximal photochemical quantum yield of photosystem II (F (v)/F (m)), the effective photochemical quantum yield of PSII (Yield), parameters of photochemical (qP) and non-photochemical (qN and NPQ) quenching of chlorophyll fluorescence, the F (p)/F (t) ratio, and the "vitality index" (fluorescence decrease ratio, R (fd)). At moderate actinic PFD, applied commonly in PAM fluorometers (about 380 A mu mol/(m(2) s)), age-dependent changes in NPQ, F (p)/F (t), and R (fd) were observed. Analysis of CFI parameters in wheat leaves of different ages at PFD increasing from 380 to 820 A mu mol/(m(2) s) revealed that R (fd), NPQ, and qN are the most sensitive markers of the leaf age among all parameters tested. These suitable indicators can be used for rapid assessment of the leaf age.

Аннотация: Microbial polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHAs), because of their well studied complex physiology and commercial potential, are vehicles for carbon and potential storage reduction for many microbial species. Even with the wealth of studies about microbial PHAs in the scientific literature, polymer accumulation and degradation are still not comprehensively understood. Poly(3-hydroxybutyrate) (P3HB) granule formation and polymer mobility were studied here in the bacterium Ralstonia eutropha strain B5786 in autotrophic cultures. Electron microscopy studies revealed decreasing cell size concomitant with enlargement of size and number of intracellular granules, and inhibition of cell division during intracellular polymer production. Activities of key P3HB biosynthetic enzymes demonstrated correlations with each other during polymer accumulation, suggesting an intricately regulated P3HB cycle in autotrophically grown R. eutropha cells. Аннотация: Application of earlier proposed ontogenetic approach to assessment of chufa (Cyperus esculentus L.) response to artificial-light culture growing conditions differing in illuminance and type of mineral nutrition is described. It was shown that, on biological soil-like substrate, plant productivity did not increase as a result of PAR level rising, and life time of chufa leaves was reduced to 11 days as compared with 18 days on the neutral substrate. Changes in the parameters of chlorophyll fluorescence induction (Fv/Fm, Yield = (Fm - Ft)/Fm, and ETR = 0.5 ? 0.84 ? Yield ? PAR) analyzed on the basis of ontogenetic approach show that it can disclose nonoptimal culture conditions. В© 2011 Pleiades Publishing, Ltd.

Аннотация: The localization of the key photoreductive and oxidative processes and some stress-protective reactions within leaves of mesophytic C3 plants were investigated. The role of light in determining the profile of Rubisco, glutamate oxaloacetate transaminase, catalase, fumarase, and cytochrome-c-oxidase across spinach leaves was examined by exposing leaves to illumination on either the adaxial or abaxial leaf surfaces. Oxygen evolution in fresh paradermal leaf sections and CO2 gas exchange in whole leaves under adaxial or abaxial illumination was also examined. The results showed that the palisade mesophyll is responsible for the midday depression of photosynthesis in spinach leaves. The photosynthetic apparatus was more sensitive to the light environment than the respiratory apparatus. Additionally, examination of the paradermal leaf sections by optical microscopy allowed us to describe two new types of parenchyma in spinach-pirum mesophyll and pillow spongy mesophyll. A hypothesis that oxaloacetate may protect the upper leaf tissue from the destructive influence of active oxygen is presented. The application of mathematical modeling shows that the pattern of enzymatic distribution across leaves abides by the principle of maximal ecological utility.
