Аннотация: A one-dimensional ecological model of the meromictic brackish Lake Shira (Russia, Khakasia) was developed. The model incorporates state-of-the-art knowledge about the functioning of the lake ecosystem using the most recent field observations and ideas from PCLake, a general ecosystem model of shallow freshwater lakes. The model of Lake Shira presented here takes into account the vertical dynamics of biomasses of the main species of algae, zooplankton and microbial community, as well as the dynamics of oxygen, detritus, nutrients and hydrogen sulphide from spring to autumn. Solar radiation, temperature and diffusion are modelled using real meteorological data. The parameters of the model were calibrated to the field data, after applying different methods of sensitivity analysis to the model. The resulting patterns of phytoplankton and nutrients dynamics show a good qualitative and quantitative agreement with the field observations during the whole summer season. Results are less satisfactory with respect to the vertical distribution of zooplankton biomass. We hypothesize that this is due to the fact that the current model does not take the sex and age structure of zooplankton into account. The dynamics of oxygen, hydrogen sulphide and the modelled positions of the chemocline and thermocline are again in good agreement with field data. This resemblance confirms the validity of the approach we took in the model regarding the main physical, chemical and ecological processes. This general model opens the way for checking various hypotheses on the functioning of the Lake Shira ecosystem in future investigations and for analysing options for management of this economically important lake.     A model study of the effect of weather forcing on the ecology of a meromictic Siberian lake / I. G. Prokopkin, E. S. Zadereev // J. Oceanology Limnology. - 2018, DOI 10.1007/s00343-018-7329-9 . - Article in press. - ISSN 2096-5508

food web -- meromictic lake -- numerical model -- sensitivity analysis -- stratification -- weather forcing
Аннотация: We used a Lake Shira numerical model to estimate the response of the ecosystem of a saline meromictic lake to variations in weather parameters during the growing season. The sensitivity analysis of the model suggests that compared to other external (nutrient inflows) and internal (spring biomasses of food-web components) factors, weather parameters are among the most influential for both mixolimnetic (phyto- and zooplankton) and monimolimnetic (purple sulfur bacteria, sulfur reducing bacteria and hydrogen sulfide) food-web components. Calculations with different weather scenarios shows how changes in the water temperature and mixing depth affect mixolimnetic and monimolimnetic food-web components and the depth of the oxic-anoxic interface in a meromictic lake. When weather forcing stimulates an increase in the biomass of food-web components in the mixolimnion, it produces cascading effects that lead to three results: 1) a higher content of detritus in the water column; 2) a higher content of hydrogen sulfide in the monimolimnion; 3) raising of the oxic-anoxic interface closer to the water-air surface. This cascading effect is complicated by the negative correlation between two light dependent primary producers located at different depths—phytoplankton in the mixolimnion and purple sulfur bacteria at the oxic-anoxic interface. Thus, weather conditions that stimulate higher phytoplankton biomass are associated with a higher detritus content and lower biomass of purple sulfur bacteria, a higher content of hydrogen sulfide and a shallower oxic-anoxic interface. The same weather conditions (higher wind, lower cloud cover, and lower air temperature) promote a scenario of less stable thermal stratification. Thus, our calculations suggest that weather parameters during the summer season strongly control the mixing depth, water temperature and the mixolimnetic food web. An effect of biogeochemical and physical interactions on the depth of the oxicanoxic interface is also detectable. However, intra- and interannual climate and weather effects will be more important for the control of meromixis stability. © 2018, Chinese Society for Oceanology and Limnology, Science Press and Springer-Verlag GmbH Germany, part of Springer Nature.

Аннотация: The brightness spectra of the Krasnoyarsk and Dnepr reservoir systems are presented for various periods of their development, from the beginning of their filling to the final stage of their formation. The curves of the surface distribution of chlorophyll a, which were remotely obtained from the brightness coefficient spectra, are found to be monotonic when diatomaceous, green protococcus, and dinophyte algae dominate in the phytoplankton. In the presence of blue-green algae, the curve of the distribution of phytoplankton on the surface is essentially irregular. The irregularities range from tens to hundreds of meters with sharp gradients of the phytoplankton concentration. The negative values of the VI color index change for positive ones when the concentration of chlorophyll a of the phytoplankton in the subsurface layer Cchl > 250-270 mg/m3. This is associated with the change in the species composition of the phytoplankton from the dominating diatom forms to bluegreen algae. Copyright В© 2005 by Pleiades Publishing, Inc.

Аннотация: The cyanobacterium Anabaena flos-aquae and many other phytoplankton species have a complex life cycle that includes a resting stage (akinete). We present a new agent-based (also known as individual-based) model of Anabaena that includes the formation and behavior of akinetes. The model is part of a coupled Eulerian-Lagrangian model and can reproduce the main features of the observed seasonal and interannual population dynamics in Bugach Reservoir (Siberia), including an unexpectedly large bloom in a year with low nutrient concentrations. Model analysis shows that the internal loading of phosphorus (P) due to germination from the sediment bed is ?10% of the total input. However, most of the long-term nutrient uptake for Anabaena occurs in the sediment bed, which suggests that the sediment bed is not just a convenient overwintering location but may also be the primary source of nutrients. An in silico tracing experiment showed that most water column cells (?90%) originated from cells located in the sediment bed during the preceding winter. An in silico gene knockout experiment (akinete formation is prohibited) showed that the formation of resting stages is of critical importance to the survival of the population on an annual basis. A nutrient-reduction management scenario indicates that Anabaena densities increase because they are less sensitive to water column nutrient levels (because of the sediment bed source) than other species. Amino acids -- Aquaculture -- Diet -- Fish feed -- Fishmeal
Аннотация: Total dependence of aquaculture on imports of feeds can significantly compromise Russia's food supply security; hence the task of designing new domestic feeds is of primary importance. A major challenge of world aquaculture is providing fish with a balanced diet, in particular, with a well-balanced composition of amino acids. In this review, we analyze international publications on the composition of amino acids in fish feed over the last two years. We summarize the data on the amino acid composition of prospective food sources for fish aquaculture: agricultural crops, insects, annelids, higher crustaceans, animal waste, phytoplankton, zooplankton, macrophytes, and microorganisms. We performed a comparative analysis of the composition of amino acids in promising aquafeed sources and fish flour traditionally used for fish feeding. Based on the results, we conclude that each of the examined food sources can be used as a component of fish nutrition and offers realistic prospects for production of alternative feeds. To ensure high quality of fish aquaculture products, the priority should be given to development of technologies which allow to control amino acid feed composition during the production process with respect to fish species-specific needs. It is hoped that this review will be useful to researchers and practitioners involved in designing and producing new domestic aquafeed for fish. © Siberian Federal University. All rights reserved.

Аннотация: 1. We studied variation in the composition of fatty acids in the seston of a small freshwater reservoir with changes in phytoplankton composition during four growth seasons. We focused on the dynamics of the ?3 fatty acids because of their potential importance for zooplankton nutrition. 2. Total diatoms were related to the 20:5?3 fatty acid (eicosapentaenoic, EPA) content in seston. Among two dominant diatom genera, Cyclotella was not associated with EPA content. In contrast, there was a significant correlation between Stephanodiscus and the percentage contribution and content of EPA throughout the study. Hence, freshwater diatoms can differ strongly in content of the essential EPA. 3. We considered abundant cyanobacteria as a potential source of 18:3?3 fatty acid (linolenic, ALA) to aquatic food webs. Among four dominant cyanobacteria species, two (Anabaena flos-aquae and Planktothrix agardhii) showed significant correlation with the ALA content of the seston, while the other two (Aphanizomenon flos-aquae and Microcystis aeruginosa) did not. 4. Dinophyta had a relatively high level of 22:6?3 (docosahexaenoic, DHA) for freshwater species and can be also a source of EPA to aquatic food webs. 5. Our results show that various species of diatoms as well as cyanobacteria can be of contrasting nutritional value for zooplankton because of their different content of the essential PUFAs. Diatoms, which are low in EPA, could not be considered as a valuable food, while some field populations of cyanobacteria might be valuable sources of essential ALA.

Аннотация: Asynchronous vertical migrations of calanoid copepods Arctodiaptomus salinus were studied in two stratified lakes in the south of Siberia using the method of two-section enclosures. It was found that the presence of a pronounced thermocline and a depth maximum of phytoplankton (Lake Shira) contributes to the appearance of intensive individual migrations of copepods between areas of the epi- and hypolimnion. Аннотация: Three levels of chemical communications involved plankton Crustacea are considered: 1) Influence of zooplankton excretion on phytoplankton; 2) Influence of zooplankton excretion on the individuals of the same or other species of the same trophic level; 3) Influence of chemical cues released by predatory zooplankton and fish on herbivorous zooplankton. The data on the influence of excreted cues on some physiological (growth, reproduction, feeding, etc.) and behavioural (vertical and horizontal migrations) characters of planktonic crustaceans are presented. Ecological role and chemistry cues responsible for the interactions of different trophic levels can be different. It is considered that chemical communications in aquatic ecosystems can be provided with: 1) Species-specific cues that strictly influence particular biological functions (communication system of feromone type); 2) Non-specific cues that strictly influence particular functions (system of regulator, that act at the whole ecosystem as the hormonal system of an organism). 3) Non-specific substances with broad (nonspecific) influence-toxic substances of "biocondition substances" according to classification of Novikov and Kharlamova (2000).

Flow cytometry -- Fluorescence -- Microscopy -- Particle counter -- Phytoplankton -- Size distribution
Аннотация: Traditionally, the abundance, cell size distribution and species identification of algae are determined by microscopic counts. In recent years, various rapid methods have been developed for routine algal studies. However, each of these methods has its drawbacks. It is important for aquatic ecologists to understand the advantages, disadvantages, and limitations of these methods. We compared the sensitivity of three rapid methods (multichannel fluorimeter FluoroProbe, imaging flow cytometer FlowCam, and CASY particle counter) to changes in cell abundance of three algae species (Chlorella vulgaris Beyerinck, Arthrospira platensis Gomont, and Nostoc sp.). We also assessed the ability of rapid methods to estimate the cell abundance of different species in the mixed samples. All instruments showed high sensitivity to changes in the cell abundance of different algae species and a mixture of these species. Any one of these methods, once calibrated, can be reliably used to estimate the abundance of a single-species/laboratory culture of microalgae. At the same time, FlowCam, without preliminary calibration, recorded the cell abundance closest to microscopic counts. When analysing a mixture of three microalgae differing in their cell sizes and spectral characteristics, FluoroProbe showed the highest accuracy in assessing the proportions of species in the mixture and FlowCam - in assessing their abundance. To study mixtures of algae and/or natural phytoplankton communities, it is advisable to use jointly a flow cytometer and a multichannel fluorimeter. The images of algae saved by the flow cytometer, if necessary, can be used to identify them, with a certain accuracy, to the species. Information on cells size and spectral characteristics obtained by two methods will be detailed enough to perform such common tasks as studying trophic interactions between phyto- and zooplankton or creating warning systems to inform of unwanted blooms of phytoplankton and their individual groups (for example, cyanobacteria). © Siberian Federal University. Yenisei River -- carbon cycle -- nutrients -- primary production -- respiration -- phytoplankton -- bacterioplankton
Аннотация: An integrated study of the middle and lower Yenisei River was performed in the summer of 2012. It involved monitoring the key elements and ecological processes associated with the carbon cycle of the river ecosystem (the study area is more than 1800 km long). Measurements of the production and destruction processes have shown the failure of the "neutral pipe" hypothesis claiming that any river is a simple drain of carbon from terrestrial ecosystems to the ocean. The Yenisei River is not a purely heterotrophic ecosystem. It also has autotrophic areas, where the primary production of planktonic photosynthesis is higher than respiration (above the Angara River and near the Bolshaya and Malaya Heta rivers). According to the data, the respiration rate of the plankton community in the river depends mostly on the water temperature and the content of inorganic phosphorous that can restrict the amount of organic matter consumed by bacterioplankton.

Correlations between fatty acid composition of seston and zooplankton and effects of environmental parameters in a eutrophic Siberian reservoir / M. I. Gladyshev [et al.] // Limnologica. - 2010. - Vol. 40, Is. 4. - P343-357, DOI 10.1016/j.limno.2009.12.004 . - ISSN 0075-9511

Аннотация: During two sampling seasons we analyzed on weekly basis fatty acid (FA) composition of seston fraction <130?m and zooplankton fraction >130?m, and compared them using a multivariate canonical correlation analysis (CCA). Besides, we evaluated a possible impact of water temperature and inorganic nutrients on FA composition of the seston and the zooplankton. In spite of significant differences in percentages of several individual FAs, we found very strong canonical correlation (cross-correlation, 1-week lag) between FA composition of the seston and the zooplankton. The most important factor, providing the overall canonical cross-correlation between FA profiles of the seston and the zooplankton fractions was eicosapentaenoic acid (20:5?3, EPA). FA composition of the zooplankton fraction had comparatively poor correlations with taxonomic composition of the zooplankton. Thus, seasonal variations of FA composition of the zooplankton were determined primarily by seasonal changes in FA composition of the seston, rather than by taxonomic differences of FA profiles between rotifers, cyclopoids and cladocerans. FA composition of the seston was strongly affected by its taxonomic composition, namely by that of phytoplankton. According to CCA, the highest factor loadings pertained to diatoms interacting with their marker acids, including EPA, and cyanobacteria and greens, interacting with their marker acids. Ciliates and small rotifers composed considerable and sometimes major part of the seston biomass, but according to CCA their contributions to seasonal variations of the total FA profile of the seston were insignificant. This finding indirectly support the conclusion of the other authors, that the main source of FAs presented in ciliates and rotifers must be sought in algae and that they do not modify FA composition of food consumed, apart from repackaging it.Water temperature was the principal environmental parameter which drove the overall variations of FA composition. Factor loadings for the inorganic nutrients were comparatively negligible. The main contribution in the seasonal variation of FA composition of the seston was given by negative interaction between water temperature and percentage of EPA in the seston. Аннотация: Understanding the factors that regulate phytoplankton and zooplankton is an important goal of aquatic ecologists; however, much remains unknown because of complex interactions between phytoplankton, zooplankton, and fish. Zooplankton, in particular cladocerans, can be regulated by bottom-up factors either via food quantity or food quality in terms of polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA) or phosphorus (P) contents in phytoplankton. Fish can recycle nutrients and in turn change the PUFA and P contents of algal resources, thus modifying bottom-up regulation. Furthermore, fish can change phytoplankton structure through consumption of cladocerans which selectively graze phytoplankton. We conducted a mesocosm (300 L) experiment to determine how trophic state and fish affected crustacean dynamics. The mesocosms were filled with water containing natural plankton from the eutrophic Lake Jorzec and mesotrophic Lake Majcz (Northeastern Poland), and we manipulated fish presence/absence. We also conducted a complementary life-table experiment to determine how trophic state and fish nonconsumptively affected demographic parameters of the dominant cladocerans in the mesocosms. Small and large cladoceran species responded differently to food quantity and quality. Small-bodied Ceriodaphnia were regulated mainly by resource concentrations (i.e., food quantity), while large species were limited by PUFAs (i.e., food quality). Fish likely increased food quality in terms of PUFA, primarily eicosapentaenoic acids (EPA), thus providing conditions for more successful development of Daphnia than in the fish-free treatments. Phosphorus in the seston was likely limiting for zooplankton. However, food quality in terms of phosphorus was likely less important than PUFA because zooplankton can accumulate nutrients in their body. © 2019 by the authors.

Аннотация: Diverse, multidirectional changes in biochemical composition of seston, plankton, and fish fry are detected in the coastal zone of a plain reservoir in the vicinity of a semiaquatic bird colony during vegetation season with extra high water level. Under these conditions, specific patterns of phyto- and zooplankton structure and quantitative characteristics, that, as was found out earlier, result from the vital activity of birds belonging to the family Ardeidae (namely, raising the share of mixotrophic phytoflagellates and copepods in plankton species composition) are leveled out. The main role in this process belongs to decomposition of immersed vegetation in the coastal zone, development of littoral macrophytes, and trophic relationships between algae and invertebrates. However, increase in atmospheric precipitation leads to increase in copepods abundance, which seems to be related to fast and intensive inflow of nitrogen-rich products of birds' vital activity. Due to this, during the whole period of observations, the following tendencies are revealed in biochemical composition of seston, plankton, and fish fry in the vicinity of the bird colony: 1) concentrations of carbon, nitrogen, and phosphorus and their ratios turn out to be auspicious for predominance of diatoms and mixotrophic phytoflagellates, rich in docosahexaenoic acid (DSA); 2) the abundance of phytoplankton, rich in polyunsaturated essential fatty acids (PEFA), favors propagation of those planktonic crustaceans which contain significantly more DSA and are more valuable food items for fish; 3) predominance of zooplankters, rich in PEFA, leads to higher concentration of PEFA in fry fish tissues, which, in certain periods, turns out to be advantageous for successful development and growth of dominant species of fish fry, such as roach, bream, white bream, and perch, by comparison with the test site.
