Аннотация: Using 16S rRNA gene sequence analyses we investigated the bacterial diversity of winter bacterioplankton of two eutrophic Siberian reservoirs. These reservoirs show similarity in phytoplankton community composition in spring and autumn but tend to differ in summer in exhibiting cyanobacterial bloom. Forty-eight unique partial 16S RNA gene sequences retrieved from two libraries were mostly affiliated with the class Actinobacteria, beta subdivision of the class Proteobacteria, and the phylum Cytophaga-Flavobacterium-Bacteroides The clone library of the pond exhibiting summer cyanobacterial bloom showed more diversity in sequence composition. A significant number of bacterial 16S rRNA gene clones were closely related to freshwater bacteria previously found in different aquatic ecosystems. This finding confirms the assumption that some bacterial clades are globally distributed.

Аннотация: Three levels of chemical communications involved plankton Crustacea are considered: 1) Influence of zooplankton excretion on phytoplankton; 2) Influence of zooplankton excretion on the individuals of the same or other species of the same trophic level; 3) Influence of chemical cues released by predatory zooplankton and fish on herbivorous zooplankton. The data on the influence of excreted cues on some physiological (growth, reproduction, feeding, etc.) and behavioural (vertical and horizontal migrations) characters of planktonic crustaceans are presented. Ecological role and chemistry cues responsible for the interactions of different trophic levels can be different. It is considered that chemical communications in aquatic ecosystems can be provided with: 1) Species-specific cues that strictly influence particular biological functions (communication system of feromone type); 2) Non-specific cues that strictly influence particular functions (system of regulator, that act at the whole ecosystem as the hormonal system of an organism). 3) Non-specific substances with broad (nonspecific) influence-toxic substances of "biocondition substances" according to classification of Novikov and Kharlamova (2000).

The effect of cannibalism intensity on net primary production and dynamics of trophic links in aquatic ecosystems [Text] / I. M. Shirobokova, N. S. Pechurkin ; ed. Аннотация: A mathematical model was used to investigate the effect of cannibalism intensity on the net primary production and the dynamics of trophic links in an aquatic ecosystem characterized by cannibalism at the upper trophic level. A mathematical model of an aquatic ecosystem has been constructed, with the following principal trophic links: limiting nutrient concentration, producers (phytoplankton), nonpredatory and predatory zooplankton. The model takes into account the age structure of the predator and includes two age groups (the young and adults). The adult predators are cannibals feeding on both nonpredatory zooplankton and their own young, which consume phytoplankton. It has been found that when cannibalism intensity increases above a certain level, the concentrations of both adults and the young of the predators decrease. At the same time, the concentrations of the nonpredatory zooplankton and of nutrients increase, while the biomass of producers decreases. When the cannibalism intensity is low, the net primary production of the system increases to a certain level correlated with the increase in cannibalism intensity and drops sharply when the level of consumption of young is high. There is an optimal intensity of cannibalism, at which the productivity in the photosynthesis link is maximal. (C) 2003 COSPAR. Published by Elsevier Science Ltd. All rights reserved.

PROTOZOA
Аннотация: We present data on studies of protists in Lake Khanka in late August-early September. A total of 99 species of protists have been found, of them 14 phytoflagellates, 14 zooflagellates, five sarcodins, two heliozoans, 62 infusoria, and two suctorians. Small infusoria from the class of Kinetophragminophora, order Oligotrichida, as well as suborder Tetrahymenina were most numerous. The density of many protist species in Lake Khanka exceeds markedly that in several other high-productivity water reservoirs. Most of the protists belong to bacteriovores (bacteriophages). Many of the found species have high density. This is evidence of the production of bacterial plankton in the lake. In view of very high water turbidity in the lake, we assume that the total production of phytoplankton is not that high. In this connection, an abundance of protists (protist plankton) indicates is an indication for the existence of an additional source of organic matter in Lake Khanka.

Аннотация: The vertical distribution of microorganisms during spring deep-water renewal in Lake Baikal was studied. The downward advection of trophogenic waters was found to create conditions for the extensive growth of microorganisms capable of decomposing and mineralizing organic carbon, nitrogen, and phosphorus in deep water layers. These processes occur annually at spring thermal bars near the underwater slope of Lake Baikal, whereas in its pelagic zone. the deep intrusions of waters rich in organic material are observed only in the years when enhanced deep-water renewal is accompanied by a high spring yield of phytoplankton.

Аннотация: The comparison of the dynamics of phytoplankton biomass and total amino acid composition was made for two water bodies: in one the phytoplankton were dominated by prokaryotes (i.e., there was a bloom of cyanobacteria) and by eukaryotic microalgae in the other. The dynamics of phytoplankton biomass and of total amino acid composition of water were investigated during the vegetation season. It was found that the only factor that significantly changed the percentages of amino acids in water was the bloom of cyanobacteria in the "blooming" water body. During the bloom of cyanobacteria, the absolute and relative content of the Leu-Glu group increased, while the contents of other acids generally dropped. Before and after the bloom, no significant variations in the total amino acid composition were recorded. In the reservoir where eukaryotic microalgae dominated, no significant variations in amino acid composition were recorded during the season.

chlorophyll -- seasonal dynamics -- hydrological structure -- space-based data
Аннотация: The paper analyzes the stability of areas in the Global Ocean, which are quasistationary with respect to the seasonal dynamics of chlorophyll concentration. Such areas were first discovered based on the CZCS data. They occur almost in all regions of the Global Ocean. They reflect typical seasonal dynamics of phytoplankton, which depends on both large ocean currents and local hydrological instability. It is related to the displacement of frontal zones and to local hydrological anomalies. Since the completion of the CZCS work there has been a 10 years gap in monitoring chlorophyll spatial distribution dynamics in the ocean. The reason is the long absence of equipment on the orbit, which would be suitable for the measurement of chlorophyll concentration. Recently, SeaWiFS data have been accumulated and their quantity is sufficient for the crude statistical analysis of image time series for 25 years. Thus, it has become possible to obtain data on the long-term stability of quasistationary areas and, therefore, on the stability of large-scale hydrological phenomena in the Atlantic Ocean. Аннотация: For the identification of ecologically significant dominant groups of phytoplanktonic algae a polychromatic DCMU-induced fluorescence method is recommended. A special fluorometer equipped with a system of replaceable filters is used to differentiate three regions of the spectrum (410 +/- 20, 510 +/- 20 and 540 +/- 10 nm) that can excite the basic light-harvesting pigments. Total and differential (for every algal taxon studied) chlorophyll a calculated from the fluorescence signals is in good agreement with biomass estimates from direct cell counts for several different trophic types of aquatic systems. This is made possible by the vizualization of the ratios of fluorescence signal values in their own coordinates: first, to decide whether it is necessary to correct linear equations in order to eliminate negative solutions; second, to determine the possibility of nulling the negative solution if a point is situated close to a side of the triangle; and third, to reduce the number of linear algebraic equations to two if the points are situated along one of the triangle sides or to one if the points are gathered at the apex. The polychromatic DCMU-induced fluorescence method can be used for monitoring natural phytoplankton populations to detect changes in their taxonomic structure.

Аннотация: Growth and potential photosynthetic activity of phytoplankton passed through intestine of crucian carp (Carassius auratus) from a small Siberian reservoir were compared with those of phytoplankton taken the directly from the reservoir. The dominant phytoplankton species in the reservoir, Microcystis aeruginosa, showed a significant increase of growth after the passage. Subdominant Planktothrix agardhii also showed an increase in growth rate, while subdominants Anabaena flos-aquae and Aphanizomenon flos-aquae were not stimulated by the gut passage.

cyanobacteria -- daphnids -- diatoms -- fatty acids
Аннотация: 1. We studied the composition of fatty acids (FAs) in the seston from two small freshwater reservoirs (Bugach and Lesnoi) with distinct periodicity of domination by cyanobacteria and eukaryotic algae during the growth season. 2. The diatoms in the both reservoirs were characterised by a high content of 14:0 and C16 unsaturated acids, whereas that of the essential FA 20:5omega3 [eicosapentanoic acid (EPA)] was low. The correlation between this polyunsaturated FA (PUFA) and diatom biomass was not significant in either reservoir. The percentage of 20:5omega3 in seston significantly correlated with the biomass of euglenophyta in Bugach and dinophyta in Lesnoi. Hence the diatoms, usually referred as a valuable food for zooplankton, were not an important source of the essential PUFA in these systems. 3. The dominant cyanobacteria in Bugach, and the green algae in Lesnoi, both contained the same marker acids: 18:3omega3 and 18:2omega6. Hence, a discrimination between these two phytoplanktonic groups on the basis of FA biomarkers may be difficult in some cases. 4. We found no significant correlation between the content of 20:5omega3 in seston and the biomass of the dominant daphniids in either reservoir. This is contrary to expectations, based on the literature, that EPA is generally important. Rather, the biomass of the two dominant Daphnia species in Bugach correlated strongly with the content of 18:3omega3 in the seston. The cyanobacteria were a probable source of this omega3 FA for Daphnia . We conclude that EPA is not always important for Daphnia populations although, in such cases, some other PUFA (e.g. 18:3omega3) might be related to their growth.

Аннотация: 1. We studied variation in the composition of fatty acids in the seston of a small freshwater reservoir with changes in phytoplankton composition during four growth seasons. We focused on the dynamics of the omega3 fatty acids because of their potential importance for zooplankton nutrition. 2. Total diatoms were related to the 20:5omega3 fatty acid (eicosapentaenoic, EPA) content in seston. Among two dominant diatom genera, Cyclotella was not associated with EPA content. In contrast, there was a significant correlation between Stephanodiscus and the percentage contribution and content of EPA throughout the study. Hence, freshwater diatoms can differ strongly in content of the essential EPA. 3. We considered abundant cyanobacteria as a potential source of 18:3omega3 fatty acid (linolenic, ALA) to aquatic food webs. Among four dominant cyanobacteria species, two (Anabaena flos-aquae and Planktothrix agardhii) showed significant correlation with the ALA content of the seston, while the other two (Aphanizomenon flos-aquae and Microcystis aeruginosa) did not. 4. Dinophyta had a relatively high level of 22:6omega3 (docosahexaenoic, DHA) for freshwater species and can be also a source of EPA to aquatic food webs. 5. Our results show that various species of diatoms as well as cyanobacteria can be of contrasting nutritional value for zooplankton because of their different content of the essential PUFAs. Diatoms, which are low in EPA, could not be considered as a valuable food, while some field populations of cyanobacteria might be valuable sources of essential ALA.

Аннотация: The use of relative variable fluorescence (RVF) of chlorophyll, as measured in the presence of Diuron, an inhibitor of electron transfer, for the estimation of the photosynthetic activity of plankton microalgae was analyzed under a wide range of light intensities in the PAR region. Oxygen evolution rates (estimated by the method of light and dark bottles and the amperometric method), RVF, and chlorophyll a concentration were measured in parallel in natural algal cenoses and microecosystems. When the previously used regression equation, in the form A = b(DeltaF/F-d)CchlI, where A is O-2 evolution rate (g/(m(3) h), DeltaF/F-d is RVF (relative units), C-chl is chlorophyll a concentration (mg/m(3)), and I is light intensity (W/m(2)), was verified in the PAR region, we observed a nonlinear dependence of the correction coefficient b on I, which can be described by the formula b = 6.227 x 10(3)rootI. This result agrees with the hypothesis that chlorophyll a fluorescence quenching comprises photochemical (qQ) and energy (qE) components. On the basis of the energy model, we determined the upper limit b(max) = 0.003 for light intensity range I < 4.4 W/m(2) and the lower limit b(min) = 0.0003 for I = 400 W/m(2).

Аннотация: Depths of thermocline and the redox zone, concentrations of dissolved and suspended carbon, and nitrogen and phosphorus in seston were measured in the pelagial of the saline meromictic Lake Shira (southern Siberia) in different years (2007-2011); the relationship of the values for those parameters with air-temperature variations was assessed. Positive correlations between both air temperatures in the previous year and the depth of the redox zone in winter and air temperature in April and the thermocline depth in summer were revealed. In the mixolimnion, the ratio of total nitrogen to total phosphorus almost always exceeded the Redfield ratio (16: 1); seston deficiency both in nitrogen and phosphorus was monitored in different seasons and at various depths. The amount of seston in the mixolimnion in summer almost doubled the amount of seston in winter and was directly related with the depth of the thermocline. In the monimolimnion, seston was rich in nitrogen and phosphorus. The amount of seston in the monimolimnion varied in different years and depended both on the air temperature in the previous year and the size of the zone.

Yenisei River -- carbon cycle -- nutrients -- primary production -- respiration -- phytoplankton -- bacterioplankton
Аннотация: An integrated study of the middle and lower Yenisei River was performed in the summer of 2012. It involved monitoring the key elements and ecological processes associated with the carbon cycle of the river ecosystem (the study area is more than 1800 km long). Measurements of the production and destruction processes have shown the failure of the "neutral pipe" hypothesis claiming that any river is a simple drain of carbon from terrestrial ecosystems to the ocean. The Yenisei River is not a purely heterotrophic ecosystem. It also has autotrophic areas, where the primary production of planktonic photosynthesis is higher than respiration (above the Angara River and near the Bolshaya and Malaya Heta rivers). According to the data, the respiration rate of the plankton community in the river depends mostly on the water temperature and the content of inorganic phosphorous that can restrict the amount of organic matter consumed by bacterioplankton.
