Аннотация: The study addresses 242Pu accumulation by Elodea canadensis, one of the abundant species of submerged plants in the Yenisei River. 242Pu in water samples of the "Elodea - Yenisei River water" model system and in the biomass fractions was determined ?-spectrometrically, following radiochemical recovery of 242Pu using 236Pu - a chemical yield tracer. The experiments on accumulation of 242Pu by Elodea biomass showed that the activity concentration of 242Pu can reach 21 В± 2 Bq/g dry wt, with the concentration factor for 242Pu 13100 В± 2100 L/kg dry wt. Results of chemical fractionation proved that during the first few hours of the experiment 242Pu contained in Elodea was mainly concentrated in the exchangeable and the adsorbed fractions of biomass (about 100%). As Elodea biomass accumulated 242Pu, the absolute amount of 242Pu in the exchangeable and the adsorbed fractions remained almost unchanged, although the portion of 242Pu tightly bound to biomass increased. At the end of the experiment, on day 7, 242Pu tightly bound to biomass (fractions of organics and mineral residue) constituted 43-63% (in different experiments) of the total 242Pu in the biomass. Аннотация: The source of radioactive contamination of the Yenisei River floodplain, including contamination with actinides, is the Mining-and-Chemical combine (MCC), which has for many years been producing weapons-grade plutonium. Actinides have been detected not only in the soil and sediment of the river but also in the biomass of aquatic plants. The aim of our investigation was to assess the levels of actinides and other radionuclides in sediments and aquatic plants both near the MCC and at a considerable distance from it, down the Yenisei River. Investigations of the Yenisei River sediment samples revealed high activity concentrations of actinides (Pu isotopes and 241Am), which were 100 times higher than their global fallout levels. Sequential extraction of radionuclides from samples of sediments collected near the MCC showed that the amounts of extracted 241Am were the largest (up to 98% of initial activity). It was found that aquatic plants of the Yenisei River collected both near the MCC discharge site and at a distance up to 200 km downstream contained several actinide isotopes. The aquatic moss, Fontinalis antipyretica, was found to contain higher levels of radionuclides than Potamogeton lucens. Leaves of P. lucens contained higher levels of radionuclides, including 239Np, than stems. Sequential extraction of radionuclides from samples of aquatic plants showed that 239Np levels in exchangeable and adsorption fractions of P. lucens biomass were higher than in the respective fractions of F. antipyretica biomass. Заглавие : New data on transuranium elements in the ecosystem of the Yenisei river floodplain
Место публикации : Radiochimica Acta. - 2007. - Vol. 95, Is. 9. - С. 547-552. - ISSN 00338230 (ISSN) , DOI 10.1524/ract.2007.95.9.547

Аннотация: The aim of the study is to investigate levels of transuranium elements in the ecosystem of the Yenisei river floodplain in the vicinity of the Mining-and-Chemical Combine of Rosatom. For the first time, the transuranium isotopes 243,244Cm have been detected in sediment, floodplain soil, and a berry shrub (Ribes nigrum - the blackcurrant) in the flood-plain of the Yenisei river. The highest level of curium isotopes registered in the sediment of the Yenisei river is 21.4 Bq/kg (dry), which is more than twice higher than maximum curium levels reported for soils sampled not far from the Chernobyl Nuclear Plant. Blackcurrant plants growing on radioactively contaminated soils contain the same transuranium elements as the soil (plutonium isotopes, americium, and curium). The highest activity concentrations of all transuranic elements have been found in ashed roots of the blackcurrant plants: 239,240Pu - 9.3 Bq/kg, 241Am - 6.9 Bq/kg, and 243,244Cm - 1.8 Bq/kg. The highest soil-plant transfer factor (TF) for 243,244Cm is determined for roots - 0.073; the TF of 243,244Cm in berries is 0.027. The TF for 239,240Pu in berries is 0.006, which is several times lower than the TF for 243,244Cm. Analysis of our results and the literature data suggests that TFs for 243,244Cm are higher than those for 239,240Pu and 241Am. В© by Oldenbourg Wissenschaftsverlag.

Аннотация: The source of radioactive contamination of the Yenisei River floodplain, including contamination with transuranic elements, is the Mining-and-Chemical Combine of the Russian Ministry of Atomic Energy, which has for many years been producing weapons-grade plutonium. Transuranic elements have been detected not only in the soil and sediment of the river but also in the biomass of aquatic plants. This work is an investigation of accumulation and release of 241Am by a submerged macrophyte of the Yenisei River (Elodea canadensis) in laboratory experiments. In 2000-2003, laboratory experiments were carried out with biomass of E. canadensis Mich. and filtered river water. The samples were collected from the Yenisei River upstream of the discharge of the Combine's radioactive effluent. The experiments showed that 241Am is accumulated by Elodea biomass: the activity concentration of 241Am can reach 3280 В± 240 Bq/g, with the concentration factor for 241Am 16 600 В± 2200 l/kg. Results of chemical fractionation have proved that in the course of 241Am accumulation by Elodea biomass, 241Am tightly bound to biomass increases from 11% to 27% of the total 241Am in the biomass. Release of 241Am from the decaying Elodea biomass has been evaluated experimentally. By the end of the experiment (lasting up to 127 days), the Elodea plants had lost up to 65% of their initial 241Am activity and the rate of 241Am release into the water environment reached 23 Bq/day. Аннотация: The Yenisei River, one of the largest rivers in the world, is contaminated with artificial radionuclides released by one of the Russian nuclear plants, which produces weapons-grade plutonium and has been in operation for many years. The aim of the study that was conducted between 1997 and 2002 was to investigate accumulation of artificial radionuclides by aquatic plants of the Yenisei River. The aquatic plants sampled were: Potamogeton lucens (shining weed) and Fontinalis antipyretica (water moss). The ?-spectrometric analysis of the samples of aquatic plants for artificial radionuclides has revealed a wide spectrum of long-lived and short-lived radionuclides. Artificial radionuclides such as 51Cr, 54Mn, 58Co, 60Co, 65Zn, 137Cs, and 152Eu were found in aquatic plants collected both near the plutonium complex and 194 km downstream in the river. The radiochemical analysis of aquatic plants revealed strontium and isotopes of plutonium. Fontinalis antipyretica had very high concentration factors of the principal radionuclides: 14220, 3110 and 500 of 51Cr, 46Sc and 239Np, respectively.

Аннотация: The Yenisei River, one of the largest rivers in the world, is contaminated with artificial radionuclides released by a Russian nuclear facility producing weapon-grade plutonium, which has been in operation for many years. Examination of Yenisei River sediment samples revealed the presence of artificial radionuclides typical of radioactive discharge from the Mining-and-Chemical- Combine (MCC) nuclear facility: isotopes of europium ( 152Eu, 154Eu, and 155Eu), caesium ( 137Cs and 134Cs), 60Co, 90Sr, and transuranium elements. Maximum radionuclide concentrations in sediments remained high as far as 240 km downstream of the MCC. In sediment cores collected upstream of the MCC, ?-spectrometric measurements registered only one artificial radionuclide, 137Cs, with a maximum activity of approx. 8 Bq kg -1 dry mass. Sediments of the Yenisei River also contain natural radionuclides. Sedimentation rates in several sections of the Yenisei River were determined using, different approaches: the 210Pb dating method and the ratios of artificial radionuclides - 137Cs/ 60Co and 152Eu/ 154Eu. With increasing distance downstream of the city of Krasnoyarsk, sedimentation rates increased from 0.88 cm year -1 to 1.30-1.51 cm year -1. Copyright В© 2010 IAHS Press.

Аннотация: The aim of the paper is to investigate accumulation of artificial radionuclides by the Yenisei river aquatic plants collected in the area affected by the activity of the Mining-and-Chemical Combine (Zheleznogorsk) from 1997 to 2000. The samples of aquatic plants were of four species: Potamogeton lucens, Fontinalis antipyretica, Elodea canadensis, and Ceratophyllum demersum. The gamma-spectrometric analysis of the samples of aquatic plants for artificial radionuclides revealed a wide spectrum of radionuclides. Radionuclides of activation origin were found in the aquatic plants taken both near the Combine and 200 km down of it. The radiochemical analysis of aquatic plants revealed strontium and plutonium isotopes. Among the aquatic plants, the highest concentration factors for the principal radionuclides were recorded in Fontinalis antipyretica (water moss).

Аннотация: Accumulation of americium ( 241Am) and plutonium ( 238,242Pu) and their distribution in cell compartments and biochemical components of the biomass of freshwater aquatic plants Elodea canadensis, Ceratophyllum demersum and Myrioplyllum spicatum and aquatic moss Fontinalis antipyretica have been investigated in laboratory experiments. Americium and plutonium taken up from water by Elodea canadensis apical shoots were mainly absorbed by structural components of plant cells (90% for 241Am; 89% for 238Pu and 82-87% for 242Pu). About 10-18% of isotope activity was recorded in the cytosol fraction. The major concentration (76-92%) of americium was bound to cell wall cellulose-like polysaccharides of Elodea canadensis, Myriophyllum spicatum, Ceratophyllum demersum and Fontinalis antipyretica, 8-24% of americium activity was registered in the fraction of proteins and carbohydrates, and just a minor concentration (<1%) in the lipid fraction. The distribution of plutonium in the biomass fractions of Elodea was similar to that of americium. Hence, americium and plutonium had the highest affinity to cellulose-like polysaccharides of cell walls of freshwater submerged macrophytes. В© 2011 Akademiai Kiado, Budapest, Hungary.

Ключевые слова (''Своб.индексиров.''): hot particles--yenisei river--floodplain soils and sediments--plutonium complex--cesium and plutonium isotopes--(241)am--dating of particles
Аннотация: The purpose of this study was to investigate radionuclide composition of the hot particles found in the floodplain of the Yenisei River and to discuss their possible Sources. Since 1995, researchers of the Institute of Biophysics have found a considerable number of hot particles that contain up to 29,000 kBq/particle of (137)Cs in the Yenisei River floodplain. Investigations of the particles in Krasnoyarsk, Moscow, and Novosibirsk have confirmed their reactor origin and made it possible to roughly estimate their age. Based oil comparative analysis of (137)Cs/(134)Cs ratios, all the particles can be divided into two or three major groups, suggesting that over the 50-year period of the MCC operation, there have been two or three emergency situations at the MCC reactors, with nuclear fuel microparticles released into the Yenisei. Microparticles containing up to 36 Bq/particle of (241)Am were detected in soil and sediment samples collected at the Yenisei River. In some of these particles the (137)Cs/(241)Am ratio is high but in the others - low. It remains unknown how these particles have been formed. However, these microparticles Occur in floodplain soils and sediments very frequently and, thus, can be considered to be the main form in which radionuclides are present in the Yenisei River floodplain. The presence of a large number of hot particles of different origin in the floodplain of the Yenisei River from the MCC production area down to the town of Yeniseisk (and, probably, farther downstream) is a source of potential health hazard to people.

Аннотация: In this work we experimentally estimated the capacities of the key components of the Yenisei River (Russia): particulate suspended matter (seston), diatom microalgae, and submerged macrophytes for accumulating Am-241 from water. In our experiments large particles of seston (8 mu m), comparable in size with diatoms, took up most of americium from water. The accumulation of americium by isolated diatom algae (Asterionella formosa and Diatoma vulgare) was lower than by total seston. The concentration factors (CFs) of Am-241 for seston of the Yenisei River in our experiments were (2.8-6.9).10(5); for diatoms -(1.5-4.2)-10(4). The Us for aquatic plant Elodea canadensis were within the same order of magnitude as those for diatoms. Activity concentration and CFs of Am-241 were nearly the same in experiments under dark and light conditions. This is indicative of an energy independent mechanism of americium uptake from the water by diatoms and submerged macrophytes. (C) 2009 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Аннотация: Some high-activity hot particles (HP) were found in the flood plain of the Yenisei River, near the Krasnoyarsk Mining-and-Chemical Combine (MCC). and their radionuclide compositions were determined. The ratios of plutonium and caesium isotopes in the particles are indicative of their reactor origin. The Cs-137 activity of the particles amounts to 29,200 kBq/particle, which is higher than the corresponding activities of the fuel particles that formed as a result of the accident at the Chernobyl NPP, All the particles have been divided into two major groups according to the Cs-137/Cs-134 ratio: in the first group, the Cs-137/Cs-134 ratio is more than or equal to 3000, and in the second the Cs-137/Cs-134 ratio is less than or equal to 1000. The particles of the first and the second groups were preliminarily estimated to be formed 30 and 20 years ago, which suggests that there must have been at least two accidents at the MCC reactors, with part of the fuel released into the Yenisei River. The Yenisei River is contaminated with artificial radionuclides due to the weapons-grade plutonium production at the Mining-and-Chemical Combine (MCC) at Zheleznogorsk (Russia) for more than 50 years. The last reactor plant at the MCC was shut down in 2010. The research presents the data on accumulation of artificial radionuclides in wild fish (pike, Esox lucius; grayling, Thymallus arcticus; and dace, Leuciscus leuciscus baicalensis) inhabiting the radioactively contaminated part of the Yenisei River between 2005 and 2014. Among artificial radionuclides that were detected in fish muscles when the last nuclear reactor plant was operating (32P, 60Co, 65Zn, 137Cs), only 137Cs was recorded four years after the shutdown of the nuclear power plant at the MCC. The concentrations of 137Cs in fish muscles were considerably below the sanitary norms for this radionuclide in the Russian Federation. Piscivorous fish species accumulated higher concentration of 137Cs in their muscles than non-predatory species. Concentration of 137Cs in fish fauna of the Yenisei River did not decrease after the shutdown of the last nuclear power plant at the MCC, while the concentration of radionuclides with induced activity decreased considerably. This can be explained by the constant inflow of 137Cs into the Yenisei River due to discharges from the radiochemical plant at the MCC and the deposits of 137Cs in the bottom sediments. We can expect that the concentration of 137Cs in fish muscles will not decrease in the next few decades.

Аннотация: The long-term operation of three reactors and the radiochemical plant of the Mining-and-Chemical Combine (MCC), Russia's largest producer of weapons-grade plutonium, has resulted in radioactive contamination of the Yenisei River floodplain. From 1995 to 2016, we found more than 200 radioactive particles (RP) in the Yenisei floodplain, downstream of the MCC. Analytical characterization showed that most of the RP were fuel particles, which were carried into the river after incidents at the MCC reactors. Having compared the Cs-137/Cs-134 ratios in the particles, we determined three time intervals when the RP were formed. The plutonium isotope ratios (Pu-238/Pu-239,Pu-240) vary substantially between the particles and indicate several different source terms. In addition to fuel RP, we found particles that only contained activation products (Co-60 or europium isotopes). SEM and gamma-spectrometry showed that the cobalt particles could have originated from the corrosion of the reactor coolant system and the europium particles -from the damaged compensating rods. No europium particles have been found anywhere else in the world. The presence of RP from different sources (fuel, cobalt, and europium particles) in the Yenisei River floodplain makes this region a unique site for studying environmental effects of the particles. These RP represent point sources of radioecological significance.

Аннотация: The structure and the first step of hydrolysis of hydrated Pu(IV) ion in aqueous medium were studied using relativistic density functional theory and the polarizable continuum model (PCM). According to calculations, the Pu(IV) ion was mainly coordinated with eight water molecules. The calculated distance Pu-O of 238-241 pm was in good agreement with the experimental value ((239 +/- 2) pm). It was demonstrated that for the correct replication of constants log K-1(0) of the first hydrolysis step, it was important to use scaling multipliers adequate to the charge of the hydrated complex when constructing the density that included the solvated complex in PCM model. The calculated values of log K-1(0) of -1.1...-0.2 were close to the experimentally defined range (-0.6-0.6). The correct replication of hydrolysis constants allowed considering the calculated range of the hydratation free energies of the Pu(IV) ion of 6070-6157 kJ/mol as a reasonable prediction of experimental values.

Аннотация: The operation of the Mining-and-Chemical Combine (MCC), the largest producer of weapons-grade plutonium in Russia, has resulted in radioactive contamination of the Yenisei River floodplain. Investigations carried out in Novosibirsk and Krasnoyarsk institutes have shown that the floodplain of the Yenisei downstream of the MCC is contaminated by radioactive particles (RP) of various types and activities. Analytical characterization of the RP showed that most of them were fuel particles, which were carried into the Yenisei after incidents at the MCC reactors. The plutonium and caesium isotope ratios (238Pu/239,240Pu; 137Cs/134Cs) vary substantially between the particles, indicating different source terms and time intervals when the RP were formed. In addition to fuel RP, there were particles that contained activation radionuclides. The experiment on dissolution of RP using the model solution (the simulated stomach fluid) showed different cumulative extractions of radionuclides from the particles: 60Co and 137Cs extractions were the lowest, the extracted fractions of europium and americium isotopes were the largest, and plutonium occupied an intermediate position. High concentrations of radionuclides in RP are sources of exposure of organisms in aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems to low radiation doses. The plant bioassays of the effects of ?-radiation from RP showed the effect of low doses of ?-radiation on growth parameters of aquatic plant Elodea canadensis growing in the Yenisei River floodplain. The presence of RP from different sources in the Yenisei River floodplain makes this region a unique site for studying environmental effects of the particles. © 2019 Elsevier Ltd

Аннотация: The Yenisei River is contaminated by artificial radionuclides released by one of the Russian facilities producing weapons-grade plutonium (the Mining-and-Chemical Combine, MCC), which has been in operation for 60 years. The paper presents results of long-term monitoring of radionuclide concentrations in six aquatic plant species collected from the 1400 km Yenisei River stretch downstream of the city of Krasnoyarsk. Before the last MCC reactor was shut down (in 2010), up to 30 artificial radionuclides were detected in the plant biomass, and 2 and 5 years after the reactor shutdown, 11 and 3–5 radionuclides, respectively, were detected. The highest concentrations of radionuclides were recorded in Fontinalis antipyretica. The aquatic plant Elodea canadensis, which commonly occurs in the Yenisei River, was used in the cytogenetic study. High frequencies of chromosomal aberrations (up to 33%) were revealed in cells of Elodea canadensis roots from the Yenisei region affected by the MCC radioactive discharge, at dose rates of 45–72 ?Gy/d, while in the cells of the plant roots from the reference areas, the frequency of chromosomal aberrations was 5–7%, at dose rates below 2 ?Gy/d. The higher frequencies of chromosomal aberrations in Elodea canadensis collected from the parts of the River with increased concentrations of artificial radionuclides are associated with the radiation factor. The aquatic plant Elodea canadensis can be recommended as a bio-indicator for radioactively contaminated aquatic ecosystems. © 2019 Elsevier Ltd

Аннотация: Abstract: The contents of isotopes of plutonium (238Pu and 239, 240Pu) and 137Cs in samples of bottom sediments and hydrobionts (water moss, amphipods, and caddisfly larvae with casings) taken in the Yenisei River in the vicinity of the radioactive discharge from the Mining and Chemical Combine in 2012 and 2018 were comparatively estimated. It is shown that the content and ratios between the specific activities of plutonium isotopes (238/239 and 240) in samples of BSs and hydrobionts increased after the recommencing of plutonium discharges into the Yenisei due to the beginning of MOX fuel production. The background content and the ratio between plutonium isotopes in BSs of the Yenisei were estimated for the first time. Hydrobionts and BSs were ranged differently according to the content of plutonium and 137Cs: we recorded the highest content of 137Cs in BSs and that of plutonium in water moss. The plutonium content in hydrobionts of the Yenisei River varies considerably, which permits specification of representatives of biota (water moss and caddisfly larvae with casings) that, along with BSs, can be used as effective indicators of ecosystem pollution with plutonium. © 2020, Pleiades Publishing, Ltd.

Аннотация: MOX-fuel production and spent nuclear fuel reprocessing started recently at the Mining-and-Chemical Combine (MCC, Zheleznogorsk, Russia) have caused an increase in controlled releases of plutonium to the Yenisei River. In this study, we analyzed time-dependent trends of plutonium (239,240Pu and 238Pu) in biota and bottom sediments of the Yenisei during 2008-2019, to estimate comparatively the potential of abundant representatives of biota as bio-monitors of contamination of the Yenisei by plutonium. Gamma-emitting radionuclides (40 K; 60Co; 137Cs; 152Eu; 241Am) were measured in environmental samples of the Yenisei as well. Samples of bottom sediments, water moss (Fontinalis antipyretica), shining pondweed (Potamogeton lucens), caddisfly larvae with casings (Apatania crymophila), and amphipods (Eulimnogammarus viridis and Palaseopsis cancelloides) were collected downstream and upstream of the radioactive discharge site. Environmental samples of the Yenisei collected downstream of the radioactive discharge site differed considerably in activity concentrations of plutonium but were similar in time-dependent trends of plutonium, reflecting the trends of annual discharges of plutonium. In 2018, the year of a sharp increase in controlled discharge of plutonium, the concentration of 239,240Pu in water moss (26 Bq kg-1 d.w.) was higher than in sediments (14 Bq kg-1 d.w.). In other years, the highest activity concentration of 2391,240Pu was observed in bottom sediments. In view of the higher magnitude of increase in plutonium concentration, water moss and shining pondweed can be considered as more sensitive indicators of increased fresh releases of plutonium than bottom sediments. Taking into account the food-related mechanism of plutonium uptake by amphipods, this representative of biota can be regarded as a sensitive monitor of bioavailable plutonium in the Yenisei.
