Аннотация: The kinetics of polyhydroxyalkanoate (PHA) degradation in natural environment in two water reservoirs having various ecological characteristics was studied. It was shown that biodegradation of polymer essentially depends on the environment temperature and inorganic composition of water. Аннотация: During the summers of 1999-2001 the dynamics of polyhydroxyalkanoate degradation in a small recreational eutrophic reservoir was studied experimentally. It has been shown that biodegradation of polyhydroxyalkanoates in the environment is determined by the structure and physicochemical properties of the polymer and by local weather conditions, which influence the state of the aquatic ecosystem. Species (clones) of bacteria able to utilize polyhydroxyalkanoates in the reservoir were identified using molecular phylogenetic analysis of 16S rRNA genes. В© 2007 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Аннотация: The degradation dynamics of polyhydroxyalkanoates of different composition has been studied in an eutrophic storage reservoir for two seasons. It has been shown that the biodegradation of polymers under natural conditions depends not only on their structure and physicochemical properties but also, to a great extent, on a complex of weather-climatic conditions affecting the state of the reservoir ecosystem. The molecular genetic analysis of 16S rRNA has revealed bacterial species (clones) probably involved in the degradation of polyhydroxyalkanoates in a model storage reservoir. Аннотация: We studied lipids and fatty acids (FA) in bottom sediments from four Siberian water bodies, Bugach, Lesnoi and Krasnoyarsk freshwater reservoirs and brackish Shira lake, that differed in physico-chemical and biological conditions. We considered the potential of the bottom sediments as a feedstock for biodiesel production and estimated properties of the obtained biodiesel as a fuel on the basis of FA composition. Contents of lipids and FA in the sediments moderately varied and were generally close to the reported data from lacustrine and estuarine systems. We confirmed that long-term eutrophication of a water body resulted in the lipid-rich bottom sediments that make them a feedstock for biodiesel production. Each of the studied water bodies had specific FA composition of sediments likely due to different organic matter sources and transformation processes. Despite these differences in FA profiles, calculated key parameters (cetane number, iodine number and heat of combustion) of biodiesel produced from all the studied sediments met the limits established by current biodiesel standards. Thus, the variation in the sediment FA composition due to environmental characteristics of a water body likely has no principal significance for fuel properties of the obtained biodiesel. Аннотация: Dynamics of bacterial plankton community of eutrophic water reservoir in laboratory microecosystems with amino acid lysine was studied using PCR-DGGE technique. The addition of lysine to the microecosystems resulted in changes in the composition of the bacterial plankton in summer; in particular, a number of Lys1 and Lys2 species (genotypes) that consume this amino acid grew fast in the bacterial community. The plank tonic bacterial communities did not respond to the addition of lysine in spring and late summer. The obtained data confirm the hypothesis for the narrow specialization of bacterial plankton species to the consumption of individual organic substances. В© 2012 Pleiades Publishing, Ltd.

Аннотация: Recruitment of pelagic populations of cyanobacteria from littoral bottom sediments is assumed to be one of the key factors for the development of harmful blooms. Therefore, it is necessary to obtain more information on the possible factors influencing the spatial distribution of the resting stages in littoral bottom sediments. To test the hypothesis that akinete abundances in littoral bottom sediments are associated with silt and the presence of higher water plants, we sampled spatial and vertical distribution and seasonal dynamics of akinetes of cyanobacterium Anabaena flos-aquae in a small Siberian reservoir. We found that akinetes accumulate in silt at stations located in macrophyte beds. Two experiments were carried out to test if there is relationship between size of inoculum and size of the pelagic population of A. flos-aquae. The proportion of A. flos-aquae in total phytoplankton biomass depended on the initial abundance of akinetes in bottom sediments. The model based on laboratory experiments gave good qualitative description of the field data. These findings can be useful to predict the location of the main akinete accumulation zones in a water body and plan the removal of sediment to prevent the cyanobacterial blooms. В© CSIRO 2011.

Аннотация: Sediments from eutrophic reservoir Bugach (Siberia, Russia) were tested for possibility to produce biodiesel. We supposed that the sediments could be a promising biodiesel producer. The major reason of high price of biodiesel fuel is cost of a raw material. The use of dredging sediments for biodiesel production reduces production costs, because the dredging sediments are by-products which originated during lake restoration actions, and are free of cost raw materials. Lipid content in sediments was 0.24% of dry weight. To assess the potential of from sediments as a substitute of diesel fuel, the properties of the biodiesel such as cetane number, iodine number and heat of combustion were calculated. All of this parameters complied with limits established by EN 14214 and EN 14213 related to biodiesel quality. В© 2011 Elsevier Ltd.

Аннотация: One of the central paradigms of ecology is that only about 10% of organic carbon production of one trophic level is incorporated into new biomass of organisms of the next trophic level. Many of energy-yielding compounds of carbon are designated as 'essential', because they cannot be synthesized de novo by consumers and must be obtained with food, while they play important structural and regulatory functions. The question arises: are the essential compounds transferred through trophic chains with the same efficiency as bulk carbon? To answer this question, we measured gross primary production of phytoplankton and secondary production of zooplankton and content of organic carbon and essential polyunsaturated fatty acids of ?-3 family with 18-22 carbon atoms (PUFA) in the biomass of phytoplankton and zooplankton in a small eutrophic reservoir during two summers. Transfer efficiency between the two trophic levels, phytoplankton (producers) and zooplankton (consumers), was calculated as ratio of the primary production versus the secondary (zooplankton) production for both carbon and PUFA. We found that the essential PUFA were transferred from the producers to the primary consumers with about twice higher efficiency than bulk carbon. In contrast, polyunsaturated fatty acids with 16 carbon atoms, which are synthesized exclusively by phytoplankton, but are not essential for animals, had significantly lower transfer efficiency than both bulk carbon, and essential PUFA. Thus, the trophic pyramid concept, which implicitly implies that all the energy-yielding compounds of carbon are transferred from one trophic level to the next with the same efficiency of about on average 10%, should be specified for different carbon compounds. Аннотация: During two sampling seasons we analyzed on weekly basis fatty acid (FA) composition of seston fraction 130?m and zooplankton fraction 130?m, and compared them using a multivariate canonical correlation analysis (CCA). Besides, we evaluated a possible impact of water temperature and inorganic nutrients on FA composition of the seston and the zooplankton.In spite of significant differences in percentages of several individual FAs, we found very strong canonical correlation (cross-correlation, 1-week lag) between FA composition of the seston and the zooplankton. The most important factor, providing the overall canonical cross-correlation between FA profiles of the seston and the zooplankton fractions was eicosapentaenoic acid (20:5?3, EPA). FA composition of the zooplankton fraction had comparatively poor correlations with taxonomic composition of the zooplankton. Thus, seasonal variations of FA composition of the zooplankton were determined primarily by seasonal changes in FA composition of the seston, rather than by taxonomic differences of FA profiles between rotifers, cyclopoids and cladocerans. FA composition of the seston was strongly affected by its taxonomic composition, namely by that of phytoplankton. According to CCA, the highest factor loadings pertained to diatoms interacting with their marker acids, including EPA, and cyanobacteria and greens, interacting with their marker acids. Ciliates and small rotifers composed considerable and sometimes major part of the seston biomass, but according to CCA their contributions to seasonal variations of the total FA profile of the seston were insignificant. This finding indirectly support the conclusion of the other authors, that the main source of FAs presented in ciliates and rotifers must be sought in algae and that they do not modify FA composition of food consumed, apart from repackaging it.Water temperature was the principal environmental parameter which drove the overall variations of FA composition. Factor loadings for the inorganic nutrients were comparatively negligible. The main contribution in the seasonal variation of FA composition of the seston was given by negative interaction between water temperature and percentage of EPA in the seston. В© 2009 Elsevier GmbH.

Аннотация: Specific growth rates (based on biomass increment in unit time) of Daphnia fed natural reservoir seston from a eutrophic Siberian reservoir were studied during four vegetation seasons in a laboratory flow-through system. Concentrations of particulate C, N, and P in reservoir seston <115 ?m were comparatively high, 1.9, 0.2, and 0.05 mg l-1, respectively; maximum C:P ratio was 259 mol:mol. According to conventional thresholds, concentrations of elements and their stoichiometry did not limit the growth rate of Daphnia. Eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) in seston significantly effected the growth rates at concentrations up to ?13 ?g l-1 (regression ANOVAR F-test value was 7.91), but not above this concentration. Thus, we consider this concentration of EPA in seston <115 ?m to be the limiting concentration of EPA for the growth of Daphnia (longispina group), i.e., below this concentration EPA was the best single predictor of the growth of Daphnia. Аннотация: The cyanobacterium Anabaena flos-aquae and many other phytoplankton species have a complex life cycle that includes a resting stage (akinete). We present a new agent-based (also known as individual-based) model of Anabaena that includes the formation and behavior of akinetes. The model is part of a coupled Eulerian-Lagrangian model and can reproduce the main features of the observed seasonal and interannual population dynamics in Bugach Reservoir (Siberia), including an unexpectedly large bloom in a year with low nutrient concentrations. Model analysis shows that the internal loading of phosphorus (P) due to germination from the sediment bed is ?10% of the total input. However, most of the long-term nutrient uptake for Anabaena occurs in the sediment bed, which suggests that the sediment bed is not just a convenient overwintering location but may also be the primary source of nutrients. An in silico tracing experiment showed that most water column cells (?90%) originated from cells located in the sediment bed during the preceding winter. An in silico gene knockout experiment (akinete formation is prohibited) showed that the formation of resting stages is of critical importance to the survival of the population on an annual basis. A nutrient-reduction management scenario indicates that Anabaena densities increase because they are less sensitive to water column nutrient levels (because of the sediment bed source) than other species. Аннотация: The elemental and fatty acid composition of seston was studied for 3 years, from May to October, in a small Reservoir. Under comparatively low C:P ratio, multivariate canonical analysis revealed no straightforward simple correlations between phosphorus and single ?3 PUFA species, but complex significant interaction between elemental composition (stoichiometry) of seston and total sestonic ?3 PUFA as a whole. Since sestonic C, P and N were found to originate mostly from phytoplankton, the contents of particulate elements and PUFA were attributed to single species in periods of their pronounced dominance. Phytoplankton species of genera of Stephanodiscus, Peridinium, Gomphosphaeria, Planktothrix and Anabaena in periods of their pronounced dominance had relatively constant species-specific elemental and PUFA composition. Phytoplankton species significantly differed in their elemental and PUFA composition, as well as in ratios of C:N, N:P, PUFA:P and partly C:P that indicate food quality for zooplankton. Hence, there were no phytoplankton species of clearly high or low nutritional value. All of phytoplankters, or at least detritus, that originated from them, may meet specific elemental and biochemical requirements of specific groups of zooplankton. Dividing phytoplankton on basis of their elemental and biochemical composition, i.e., nutrition quality, into large taxa (cyanobacteria, diatoms, etc.) appeared to be too coarse for assessing nutritional value for zooplankton. Аннотация: Dependence of specific integral population growth rate or specific production rate of populations with random size and age structure on elemental and essential fatty acid composition of natural seston was studied in a laboratory flow-through system using a multiple regression. Under a comparatively high content of particulate phosphorus (P), the best single predictor of the growth appeared to be content of eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA, 20:5?3), as it was found earlier for somatic growth of even-aged populations of Daphnia. Regression equation with two independent variables, EPA and particulate nitrogen (N), gave a significantly better fit for the population growth as the dependent variable than the equation with EPA as the single independent variable. Interestingly, there was no significant correlation between N as the single variable and the growth. The essential ?3 fatty acid and N appeared to be complementary indicators of the food quality, which probably limited different constituents (reproductive and somatic) of the integral population growth under the high content of particulate P. Аннотация: Seasonal dynamics of Anabaena flos-aquae (Lyngb.) Breb., including vegetative cells, akinetes and akinete envelopes, in bottom sediments and water column at both littoral and deeper central stations of a small Siberian reservoir was studied. Two types of akinetes were observed: in the first half of summer Anabaena formed akinetes, which served for vegetative reproduction and germinated in water column soon after differentiation, while in the second half of summer the akinetes produced served as a resting stages, which were deposited to bottom sediments. Canonical correlation analyses revealed that decrease of water temperature was the main environmental factor that stimulated the akinete formation. In contrast to the general opinion, concentration of inorganic phosphorus slightly, but positively influenced the akinete formation. Thus, akinetes formed in response to the temperature decrease, needs a certain level of this nutrient. At littoral and open-water stations abundance and seasonal dynamics of akinetes in water column and their sinking pattern were very similar. However, seasonal dynamics of abundance of akinetes in sediments in these two reservoir locations differed: whereas the abundance of akinetes in open water increased permanently during the summer, that in the littoral decreased soon after their sedimentation. Аннотация: In 2002, a "top-down" biomanipulation (reduction of biomass of planktivorous fish Carassius auratus) had been successfully carried out in a small reservoir of the river Bugach (Krasnoyarsk, Russia), after which the cyanobacterial blooming ceased. However, the reservoir ecosystem was absolutely free of Daphnia - the main link of trophic cascade. As supposed, the reduction of blooming was the result of suppression of a direct stimulation effect of planktivorous fish on cyanobacteria, revealed earlier in laboratory experiments. The question arose as to whether the effect of stimulation of cyanobacteria revealed in laboratory may lead to the changes in biomass of cyanobacteria in the reservoir, observed after the biomanipulation. To test this supposition, a mathematical model describing growth of cyanobacteria in the reservoir was developed. The modelling results and field data on biomass of cyanobacteria in summer closely coincided. Modelling calculations showed that direct influence of planktivorous fish could cause the second summer peak of water blooming by Microcystis. On the contrary, removal of crucian carp from the reservoir will not affect the level of water blooming caused by cyanobacteria Anabaena, as this species' growth is not stimulated by fish. Аннотация: The reaction of algae and cyano-bacteria photosynthetic apparatus on atmospheric sediments, incident solar radiation and wind velocity was estimated by measuring chlorophyll fluorescence using three-beam fluorescent diagnostics. As shown, wind in the spring positively affects the chlorophyll concentration but causes negative effect on phytoplankton photosynthetic activity in other seasons. Under conditions of high-intensity solar irradiation confervoid and colonial cyanobacteria, possessing gas vacuoles, have an advantage over plankton eukaryotic algae. Other response differences weren't observed.

Аннотация: The vertical distribution of net zooplankton in head-water of Krasnoyarsk hydroelectric power station and its horizontal distribution in the tail-water were studied during two years in winter and summer seasons. In order to distinguish living and dead individuals the special staining was used. It was revealed that on average 77% of living plankton pass through high-head dam with deep water scoop to the tailwater. While passing through dam aggregates some individuals of the reservoir plankton are traumatized and die, that results in some increase of portion of dead individuals in the tail water near dam (from 3 to 6%). Alive zooplankton passed through the dam aggregates is eliminated under the Upper Yenisey highly turbulent conditions. There is approximately 10% of it in 32 km from the dam if compare with biomass in 20-40 m layer of reservoir, the portion of dead increases to 11%. The biomass of zooplankton suspended in the water column of the tail-water sometimes increases (till > 1 g/m3) due to large Copepoda Heterocope borealis, which inhabits near-bottom and near-shore river zones and can be found in the central part of the river during reproductive period. Limnetic zooplankton from the reservoir cannot be considered as important food for planktivores in the tail-water.
