Аннотация: This research was aimed at obtaining a closed control system. This was achieved by placing all the technological processes providing for human vital activities within the hermetically sealed space, and by transferring the entire control and guidance of these processes to people inhabiting the system. In contrast to existing biological life support systems, man has been included not only as a participant of metabolism, but as an operator who is the central figure in collecting information, making decisions and controlling all technological processes. To tackle this problem, the "BIOS-3" experimental complex was created for performing long-term experiments using different structures of biological life-support system. The experiment lasted six months and consisted of three stages. During the first stage the system was comprised of two equivalent phytotrons with the culture of wheat and an assortment of vegetable plants, and the living compartment. At the second stage, one of the phytotrons was removed while a compartment of chlorella cultivators was introduced. The third stage differed from the second, the former using wheat phytotron and the latter employing phytotron with an assortment of vegetable cultures. Three men inhabited the system simultaneously. The experiment demonstrated that a biological life support system controlled autonomously from the inside is feasible within a small confined space. However, immunological and microbiological research shows, that the medium created by the system is not fully adequate for man. In conclusion, some prospects have been outlined for further studies of biological life support systems. В© 1976.

Аннотация: Computer simulations of electrooptic interactions in solid molecular systems have been widely used with good effect. In these calculations molecules are usually considered point dipoles (molecule-point approximation), their parameters are taken from free molecules, and summations over the crystal lattice (lattice sums) are done by the Ewald method. Synthesis of effective new systems for electrooptic applications results in large complicated molecules much longer than the intermolecular distances in crystals. To take molecular fragmentation directly into account in this approach requires very long computing time. To simplify this problem, the molecular lattice sums are modified by dividing the molecule into fragments and calculating the lattice sums for each fragment. The results are then averaged over the weight fragment polarizabilities. This weighting coefficient is introduced to take account of the anisotropy of the molecular polarizability distribution over the molecular frame. The rest of the calculations are performed in the usual way. The method has been used to calculate linear and nonlinear optic parameters for some substituted benzene crystals with good results.

Аннотация: The growth and development of Brachionus plicatilis (Muller), a rotifer and one of the most abundant zooplankton species in Lake Shira, a saline lake at low temperature in the Republic of Khakassia, was studied in cultures at different trophic conditions. Growth indices were evaluated at natural (lake) concentrations of bacteria, Chlorella vulgaris, a microalga, and Candida utilis, a yeast. The negative effect on rotifer reproduction in the algal-bacterial community by blue-green algae was demonstrated. The ratio of ontogenetic periods was shown to be in accord with species and food concentration. Base values required to calculate B. plicatilis population simulation model parameters were defined.

Аннотация: The process of biotic turnover in a closed ecological system (CES) with an external energy flow was analyzed by mathematical modeling of the biotic cycle formation. The formation of hierarchical structure in model CESs is governed by energy criteria. Energy flow through the ecosystem increases when a predator is introduced into a "producer-reducer" system at steady state. Analysis of the model shows that under certain conditions the presence of the primary predator with its high mineralization ability accelerates the biotic turnover measured by primary production. We, therefore, conclude that for every system it is possible to find a suitable predator able to provide the system with a higher biotic turnover rate and energy consumption. В© 2001 COSPAR. Аннотация: MELiSSA is a microorganism based artificial ecosystem conceived as a tool for understanding the behavior of ecosystems and developing the technology for future Manned Space Missions. MELiSSA is composed of four compartments colonized by the microorganisms required by the function of this ecosystem : breakdown of waste produced by men, regeneration of atmosphere and biosynthesis of edible biomass. This paper reports the mass balance description of a Biological Life Support System composed of the MELiSSA loop and of a Higher Plant Compartment working in parallel with the photosynthetic Spirulina compartment producing edible biomass. The recycling efficiencies of the system are determined and compared for various working conditions of the MELiSSA loop with or without the HPC. Аннотация: The question on the essence of life as phenomenon is the key one for astrobiology, since the answer to this question determines "breadth of our outlook". Taking Earth's version of life as the pattern extremely under-estimates our estimation of the probability of life origin and respectively expected probability of extraterrestrial life discovery. In the paper the hypothetical key attribute of life in general is selected on the base of comparative analyses and deductive inference. Simulation conducted on the base of neural network model shows that the same function could be realized by means of great variety of structures, which originated in the course of an evolutionary process. So multiplicity of evolutionary outcomes essentially increases the probability of final result - realization of an integrated function providing fitness to environment. Life as the integrated function can be realized via great variety of development ways and structures. A logical consequence of definitions for life as phenomenon is suggested. Final one is "Life is specific organization of informational and energetic processes coupling, enabling choice-making, and displayed as anomalies of different kinds". Anomalies of visible form, mechanical movement, chemical composition and noticeable response are considered. Presented in the paper sweeping generalization is not rigorously proven, however it can play heuristic role in increasing the level of specificity of searching for extraterrestrial life. Аннотация: Using mathematical modeling methods, the work investigates possible existence of a phytoflagellate population in the ecosystem of a stratified lake (Lake Shira, Khakasia, Russia). Until this study was carried out, no phytoflagellate population had been detected in the lake, although there had been indirect evidence of the possible presence of a cryptomonad population in this water body. To answer the question if this population may be present in this water body, as the first step of investigation, a mathematical model was developed describing the microorganism biomass dynamics and phytoflagellate relationship with the lake food web. The calculations showed that cryptophytic algae were abundant in the water column layers above the lake chemocline at the beginning of summer but showed low biomass concentrations during other periods of time. In the summer following the construction of the model, samples were collected from Lake Shira, as the next step of the study. A cryptophytic algae population was found in the water column, and the pattern of its distribution in the ecosystem was similar to that predicted by the model. In addition to that, we studied theoretically possible reasons for the early summer development of the population in the deep water layers and found that it was the result of the mixotrophic feeding strategy of cryptomonads and trophic interactions in the food web. The study shows that preliminary modeling of the locational and temporal distribution of populations whose presence in the ecosystem is only suggested by indirect evidence may be useful as a tool for searching for the species in natural ecosystems and as an approach enabling a more accurate description of the food web structure of a water body. Аннотация: A sealed vegetation chamber was designed and constructed for physical simulation of climate conditions in the Subarctic zone during the spring–summer time. The small laboratory tundra-simulating ecosystem (TSE) was created for comparative evaluation of the rates of soil respiration and of the total balance of carbon fluxes in tundra ecosystems. The test experiment was performed to study the TSE response to a temperature rise in air and soil by 2°C in terms of the intensity of the СО2 flux. It was shown that this increase in temperature would cause a pronounced shift in the balance of СО2 production and utilization in the ecosystem from near-zero values to a stable generation of 24 ?mol/h of CO2 per 1 kg of dry biomass. © 2016, Pleiades Publishing, Ltd.

Аннотация: Dissolution and mixing of flavin mononucleotide (FMN), which activates a luminescent reaction, were considered in various designs of microfluidic chip for pollution analysis of liquid samples. The aim was to determine the velocity mode of fluid flow ensured the uniform distribution of the FMN in the reaction chamber. Simulation of concentration distribution of FMN in various designs of microfluidic chips was conducted. It was shown that the passive mixing techniques based on the constant flow rate didn't provide mixing of FMN in acceptable time (3 seconds). The most efficient mixing was achieved using variable flow rate with a gradually increasing frequency of oscillation. © Published under licence by IOP Publishing Ltd.

Аннотация: Our opinion on the properties of the Earth’s climate system does not coincide with that generally accepted. Statistical analysis shows that, if we put aside the most substantial natural perturbing factors, the long-term global temperature dynamics appears as a step function of time. This dynamics is fundamentally different from the climate system’s continuous response to external anthropogenic effects, which is demonstrated in the models of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change. The variants illustrated by a simple model (the system, affected either inadvertently or externally, changes from one quasi-stationary state to another) seem to be more suitable. © 2016, Pleiades Publishing, Ltd.

Аннотация: Here we show the new approach to analysis of seasonal phenological dynamics of wooded plants. Our model was premised on representation of phenological processes of trees in boreal domain by a process of energy production during the vegetation season and partial release of accumulated energy for survival during resting. We introduced the energy balance equation combining weather and phenological indicators and linking them throughout a year. The model was parameterized using data of phenological studies of birch, aspen, and Siberian larch in Stolby Nature Sanctuary (55°38? - 55°58? N, 92°38? - 93°05? E) during 1951-2012 which allow high accuracy simulation of phenological stages. Coefficients of the equation may be considered as indicators of sensitivity of wooded plants to climate. We show that remotely sensed data on phenological dates may be used in calculations using the model of energy balance. Daily MODIS/Terra images of NDVI (Normalized Difference Vegetation Index) of the studied deciduous forests were used. © 2017, Izdatel'stvo Nauka. All rights reserved.

Аннотация: This study aimed to evaluate the suitability of two bioaerosol generation systems (dry and wet generation) for the aerosolization of microorganisms isolated from the International Space Station, and to calibrate the produced bioaerosols to fulfill the requirements of computational fluid dynamics model (CFD) validation. Concentration, stability, size distribution, agglomeration of generated bioaerosol and deposition of bioaerosols were analyzed. In addition, the dispersion of non-viable particles in the air was studied. Experiments proved that wet generation from microbial suspensions could be used for the production of well-calibrated and stabile bioaerosols for model validation. For the simulation of the natural release of fungal spores, a dry generation method should be used. This study showed that the used CFD model simulated the spread of non-viable particles fairly well. The mathematical deposition model by Lai and Nazaroff could be used to estimate the deposition velocities of bioaerosols on surfaces, although it somewhat underestimated the measured deposition velocities.
