Аннотация: The vertical structure of the ecosystem in the euphotic zone of the western Equatorial Pacific has been studied. The studies were based on a continuous sounding of the bioluminescence field, with simultaneous, vertically aimed sampling made with the aid of a 5l water bottle and plankton nets. The bioluminescence field has a two-maxima structure with a more pronounced and permanent lower maximum found in the oligotrophic regions as deep as 60 to 100 m. In the narrow (10 m) layer of maximum bioluminescence, the concentration of zooplankton, as well as the concentration, activity and production of bacteria and phytoplankton, are several times higher than those in immediately adjacent waters at greater or lesser depth. At the same time, the concentration of nutrient salts in that layer diminishes sharply and approaches zero in the overlying water. Analysis of the data obtained shows that the production processes above the lower maximum layer are dependent not only on the turbulent influx of nutrient salts from the underlying layers, but also on the horizontal supply from the zone of upwelling. A pelagic community, in its different time aspects from the moment of water ascending until its sinking in the convergence zone, is suggested as a common system for modelling. Аннотация: To study equilibrium structures of magnetoelastic chains we have introduced an equivalent system and examined the whole class of its solutions. Appearance of various structures of the chain is due to the choice of an appropriate minimizing solution of the equivalent dynamic system. Commensurate and incommensurate structures, transitions from ferromagnetic to antiferromagnetic states, and transitions to the states with alternating clusters of ordered spins are obtained. Conditions for appearance of chaotic structures and amorphous magnetic states of the chain are discussed. В© 1985 Plenum Publishing Corporation.

Аннотация: The structures of the ground state of a discrete model of two interacting helical chains are investigated by the discrete mapping method. When non-interacting chains have different spatial periods, the ground state structure of the model depends on the value of the interaction constant ?. We show the existence of a critical value ?c at which the chains form a common helix. Regular soliton structure is realized for ???c as a ground state. For ??c the system ground state passes through a sequence of transitions of incomplete devil's staircase type. Metastable chaotic structures are shown to exist. В© 1987.

Аннотация: For analytical purposes bioluminescence can be used in three main ways: 1. luminescence measurement of bioluminescent system components isolated in vitro; 2. determination of luminous organisms' reaction to the in vivo test-action; 3. measurement of bioluminescence in marine ecological systems. The majority of the reports of this Symposium are dealing with the first two topics. The aim of our presentation is to draw attention to the third one. The possibilities of bioluminescent analysis are wider than its traditional scheme of applications in the laboratory, when the emitting system is withdrawn from a native source and is placed in a cuvette of the light measuring device. The reverse scheme is also possible, i.e. the device can be introduced into light emitting system such as a marine biocenosis--the community of the sea inhabitants--where we obtain a highly sensitive and rapid means of gaining the information on the vital activity of marine ecosystems, i.e. their spatial structure, rhythms, man's influence upon them, etc. The present communication will consider the possibilities of this form of bioluminescent analysis.

Аннотация: Genes encoding luminescence of Photobacterium leiognathi have been cloned in Escherichia coli. The luminescent clones were readily apparent. Among them, a clone containing a recombinant plasmid with a 13.5-kb insertion was identified. This DNA fragment contained all of the luminescence-encoding genes. The luciferase-encoding genes (lux) in this DNA fragment were localized. We have sequenced a part of the cloned lux region and identified the luxA, luxB and luxG genes encoding the ? and ? subunits of luciferase and a ? protein with an Mr of 26 180, respectively. The analysis of deduced amino acid sequences and comparison with known luciferase sequences from Vibrio harveyi, indicate the common origin of these proteins. В© 1990.

Аннотация: We studied the population structure of Escherichia coli strain Z905, carrying the recombinant plasmid of the Ap(r)Lux+ phenotype, in continuous culture in a chemostat. We found that the maintenance of a stable, defined ratio of plasmidless to plasmid-carrying cells in the population depended primarily on the presence in the medium of the selective factor (ampicillin), and also on the nature of the growth-limiting carbon and energy source.

Аннотация: Electron microscopical studies of the nucleoid structure of hydrogen bacteria using ultrahin sections and spread DNA from bacterial cell lysates revealed a different DNA packaging in the cell. A compact state of the major part of DNA at all growth stages and stability of nucleosome-like structures were shown. The use of antibodies to HU protein of E. coli labelled by protein A-colloidal gold demonstrated the immunological relationship between HU protein of E. coli and histone-like proteins of Alcaligenes eutrophus and their possible role in the nucleosome-like DNA packaging in procariotic genome.

Аннотация: Material support of all manned space flights so far has been provided from a prestored stock of substances or replenished from the Earth's biosphere. Exploration of space will, however, become real only when man is able to break away from Earth completely, when he will be accompanied by a system providing everything necessary to sustain full-valued life for an unlimited time. The only known system to date meeting this requirement is the Earth's biosphere. To break away from his cradle, as K.E. Tsiolkovsky called Earth, it is necessary to devise a life support system functionally similar to the natural biosphere. This need not be similar in structure to the vast diversity of trophic relationships available on Earth, but requires the solution of a multitude of various problems of an ecological, physiological, engineering and social-psychological nature. Human life-support systems based on biological regeneration of environments in small volumes have been studied at the Institute of Biophysics (Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences) over many years. This work has resulted in the design of Bios-3, a biologically-based self-sustained human life support system.
