The aim of the research was a comparative evaluation of the intensity of uranium-238 accumulation in the biomass of aquatic organisms, occupying different trophic levels in the ecosystem of the Yenisei river. Previously, uranium-238 at concentrations higher than the background ones was detected in water and sediment samples of the Yenisei River collected close to the discharge site of one of the Rosatom facilities (the Mining-and-Chemical Combine). However, radioecological studies of the Yenisei River ecosystem have not focused on uranium isotopes in aquatic organisms so far. The toxic effects of uranium on living organisms are known to be based on its both radioactive and chemical properties. We conducted a study on accumulation of uranium-238 in aquatic organisms at different trophic levels in the Yenisei River ecosystem between 2010 and 2013. We collected samples of aquatic moss (Fointinalis antipyretica), zoobenthos (Philolimnogammarus viridis and Ph. cyaneus), arctic grayling (Thymallus arcticus), and pike (Esox lucius) from the Yenisei region at a distance of 85-90 km downstream of Krasnoyarsk (5-10 km downstream of the radioactive discharge of the Mining-and-Chemical Combine). Data on samples are shown in Table 1. We determined uranium concentration in the samples of aquatic organisms by neutron activation analysis, in water - by ICP-MS (Table 2). The study shows that uranium can be effectively concentrated from water and accumulate in the biomass of all aquatic organisms used in experiments. The highest uranium concentration factors (CFs) were obtained for aquatic moss, and they were several times higher than the uranium CFs for zoobenthos and fish muscles. Based on the uranium concentration from water, all aquatic organisms of the Yenisei River used in this study can be ranked as follows: aquatic moss > gammarids > grayling = pike. No statistically significant difference has been found between uranium accumulation by fish of different trophic levels (Arctic grayling and pike). The uranium CFs obtained in this study is comparable with the literature data on the CFs of artificial radionuclides for aquatic moss and fish of the Yenisei River

Аннотация: Content of eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA, 20 : 5n-3) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA, 22 : 6n-3) and the n-3/n-6 ratio are important indicators of nutritive value of aquatic invertebrates as food for fish. We studied fatty acid (FA) content and composition of 68 zoobenthic species. Benthic invertebrates differed significantly in their contents of EPA and DHA and n-3/n-6 ratios. The most valuable food for fish were Insecta, especially Ephemeroptera and Trichoptera, Gammaridae, and Turbellaria (Dendrocaelopsis sp.). The invertebrates of low food quality for fish were Hirudinea, Mollusca, Oligochaeta, Bryozoa (Plumatella emarginata), and Coleoptera (Dytiscus lapponicus). Our data suggest that the recent and ongoing global replacement of native species, mainly Insecta, by invaders, mostly represented by Mollusca, Crustacea, Polychaeta, Oligochaeta, Bryozoa, and Hirudinea, probably will reduce the nutritive value of food sources for benthivorous fish. In addition, some of the taxa studied have peculiar FAs, which may be useful as their markers in trophic webs. Thus, 20 : 1n-13, 20 : 2n-6, 22 : 5n-3, and 22 : 6n-3 are likely to be considered markers of Mollusca, Hirudinea, Turbellaria, and Gammaridae, respectively, for tracing food webs in freshwater ecosystems. © 2016 by The Society for Freshwater Science.

Аннотация: The seasonal dynamics of feeding spectra and diet of Arctic graying in a stretch of the middle reaches of the Yenisei River (from the dam of the Krasnoyarsk HPP to the mouth of the Kan River) was studied in 2009–2013. Its connection with the food-supply state and fish growth has been traced. It has been shown that the intensity of fish feeding is relatively stable throughout the year, despite significant fluctuations in zoobenthos biomass. The contribution of groups dominating in diet (amphipods and larvae of caddisflies) changes depending on the month. Amphipods prevail in the diet of fish during the period from June to October and caddisflies prevail in the winter and spring months. Among caddisflies, selective feeding on a small species, Apatania crymophila, has been revealed. The change of the primary diet component during the summer period corresponds to a sharp increase in the coefficients of relative condition factors with a peak in August–September. It has been assumed that changes in the ratio of weight and linear sizes of fish are associated not only with an increase in the water temperature, but also with the grayling switching to the consumption of amphipods with a higher nutrition value. © 2017, Pleiades Publishing, Ltd.

Fluxes of biomass and essential polyunsaturated fatty acids from water to land via chironomid emergence from a mountain lake / E. V. Borisova [et al.] // Contemp. Probl. Ecol. - 2016. - Vol. 9, Is. 4. - P446-457, DOI 10.1134/S199542551604003X . - ISSN 1995-4255

amphibiotic insect emergence -- biogenic fluxes from water to land -- Chironomidae -- mountain landscape -- polyunsaturated fatty acids -- Chironomidae -- Hexapoda
Аннотация: The taxonomic composition, seasonal dynamics, and emergence intensity of chironomid adults (the Chironomidae family) emerging from Oiskoe mountain oligotrophic lake (Western Sayan, Southern Siberia) have been established. The value of the annual emergence of chironomid adults averages 0.42 g wet weight m-2 in the lake area and approaches the value of potential emergence, which is calculated based on the estimate of zoobenthos secondary production. For the first time the fatty-acid composition and contents of essential omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) are compared between the larvae and adult stages of chironomids. The PUFA content per wet weight unit in adults is more than 7 times higher than that in larvae. The PUFA flux per lake area unit resulting from the chironomid emergence amounted to 1.752 mg m-2 y-1, which is over 10 times lower than the global estimate for the emergence of amphibiotic insects. Calculations show that the PUFA flux brought with the chironomid emergence per land unit of the studied mountain territory is very low when compared to that for other landscapes, with the exception of the shoreline part of the territory with a width of 15 m, in which the PUFA flux is comparable to that in productive landscapes. © 2016, Pleiades Publishing, Ltd.

Аннотация: During three field seasons (June-September) of 1997-99 contents of Na, K, Ca, Mg, Fe, Mn, Zn, Cu, Al, Cr, Ni, Cd, and Pb were determined in compartments of ecosystem (surrounding soils, bottom sediments, water, zoobenthos, macrophytes, and fish) of a fish and recreation pond situated at the edge of Krasnoyarsk City (Siberia, Russia). Contents of most parts of metals in soils, water, and macrophytes significantly correlated with each other. As concluded, their contents were determined by natural, general, geochemical peculiarities of the region. Heavy metals, contents of which were higher than federal upper limits of concentration, were revealed. In muscles of fish with different feeding spectra-crucian and perch-concentrations of some metals differed significantly; correlation graphs for metals also had different structures. Comparison of our data with those on diverse aquatic ecosystems of Siberia, Europe, North America, and China published in the last decade was carried out. It was concluded that a distribution of heavy metals in the compartments of an aquatic ecosystem presently have to be determined for each particular water body until general regularities are discovered.

Кл.слова (ненормированные):
essential polyunsaturated fatty acids -- river zoobenthos -- secondary -- production -- biodiversity -- water temperature -- climate warming
Аннотация: Highly unsaturated fatty acids (HUFA), namely eicosapentaenoic acid (20:5n-3, EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (22:6n-3, DHA), which are essential for many animals, including humans, are mainly produced in aquatic trophic webs. In fast-flowing rivers, macrozoobenthos is the main source of HUFA for fish and may be particularly vulnerable to thermal alterations associated with climate change. We studied benthic communities in a unique natural ecosystem: the Yenisei River downstream of the dam of Krasnoyarsk Hydroelectric Power Station with very low temperature in summer because of discharge of cold water from deep in the reservoir and its tributaries with high summer temperature. This natural experiment' allowed to get rid of confounding factors, such as differences in light, seasonality, geology (biogeochemistry) and biogeography (regional species pools). As found, in spite of an increase of biodiversity and rates of daily production in warm rivers compared with cold sites, DHA and partly EPA production of zoobenthos decreased with the increase of temperature because of changes in species composition. Thus, in a climate warming context, we can predict a decrease of production of these HUFA by river zoobenthos and thereby a diminishing of their supply for fish and next to humans. Аннотация: We investigated time-dependent trends of artificial radionuclides in aquatic moss, zoobenthos (amphipods and caddisfly larvae), and three abundant wild fish species (Northern pike, Arctic grayling, and Siberian dace) inhabiting the Yenisei River in the vicinity of the radioactive discharge site in 2007–2015, in a period before and after the shutdown of the last nuclear reactor plant at the Mining-and-Chemical Combine (MCC), which occurred in 2010. From our research, we learned that concentrations of short-lived radionuclides, whose discharges to the Yenisei either stopped or declined after the shutdown of the reactor plant at the MCC (24Na, 46Sc,51Cr, 54Mn, 58Co, 59Fe, 60Co, 65Zn, 103Ru, 141,144Ce, 152,154Eu, 239Np), decreased in biota samples as well. The ecological half-life (EHL) of 65Zn (0.4–0.7 y) was similar to the physical half-life of this isotope, the EHLs of 60Co (1.2–2.1 y) and 152Eu (1.8 y) were shorter than the physical half-lives of these isotopes. Concentration of 137Cs did not decrease significantly in biota of the Yenisei after the shutdown of the last reactor plant because the discharges of this radionuclide to the Yenisei continued at the same level. On a longer-term scale (since 1973 and since 1991), concentration of 137Cs in fish muscle had significantly decreased, following the decrease in annual discharges of this radionuclide to the Yenisei, and the EHL of 137Cs was estimated as 6.5–12.8 y. Statistically significant correlation with annual discharges of 137Cs was revealed for the concentration of this radionuclide in grayling (whole bodies and muscle); dace (muscle), and amphipods. Despite their ability to accumulate high concentrations of 137Cs, aquatic moss and caddisfly larvae (analyzed together with their stony casings) were not sensitive to interannual fluctuations in the releases of this radionuclide to the Yenisei. Among the analyzed fish species of the Yenisei, the highest activity concentration of 137Cs was revealed in pike (body and muscle), indicating biomagnification of this radionuclide in the top level of the trophic chain. © 2019 Elsevier Ltd

CRUDE-OIL SPILL
Кл.слова (ненормированные):
zoobenthos -- species composition -- abundance -- biomass -- production -- fish -- productivity -- oil spills -- water quality
Аннотация: The species composition and quantitative characteristics of the zoobenthos in Lake Pyasino and rivers flowing into it after a diesel spill have been analyzed. The production of zoobenthos and potential production of benthivorous fish in Lake Pyasino have been calculated. A small number of zoobenthos species and low values of abundance and biomass are revealed. In the Bezymyanny Stream, the mouth of the Daldykan River, and the Ambarnaya River, oligochaetes Limnodrilus hoffmeisteri Claparede and Tubifex tubifex (O. F. Muller) dominate in the zoobenthos abundance and biomass. In Lake Pyasino and the Pyasina River outflow, larvae of caddis flies, chironomids, stoneflies, and amphipods prevail. In the area of the deepwater silted station of Lake Pyasino, oligochaetes L.hoffmeisteri develop, the proportion of which in the benthic fauna at this station (40 and 79% of the total biomass and abundance, respectively) is maximal. The amphipod Monoporeia affinis (Lindstrom) dominates in terms of biomass at this station. A decrease in the chironomid diversity, an increase in the proportion of polysaprobic oligochaetes, and lower values of the Shannon index in Lake Pyasino in 2020 when compared to 1992 are found. The low abundance (2181 +/- 2048 ind./m(2)) and biomass (2.01 +/- 1.85 g/m(2)) of zoobenthos in the lake results in low values of zoobenthos production and the potential production of benthivorous fish (3 kg/ha per season). Based on the state of zoobenthos, an improvement in water quality has been observed from river sections exposed to the oil spill to the lake and the source of the River Pyasina.

Аннотация: MOX-fuel production and spent nuclear fuel reprocessing started recently at the Mining-and-Chemical Combine (MCC, Zheleznogorsk, Russia) have caused an increase in controlled releases of plutonium to the Yenisei River. In this study, we analyzed time-dependent trends of plutonium (239,240Pu and 238Pu) in biota and bottom sediments of the Yenisei during 2008-2019, to estimate comparatively the potential of abundant representatives of biota as bio-monitors of contamination of the Yenisei by plutonium. Gamma-emitting radionuclides (40 K; 60Co; 137Cs; 152Eu; 241Am) were measured in environmental samples of the Yenisei as well. Samples of bottom sediments, water moss (Fontinalis antipyretica), shining pondweed (Potamogeton lucens), caddisfly larvae with casings (Apatania crymophila), and amphipods (Eulimnogammarus viridis and Palaseopsis cancelloides) were collected downstream and upstream of the radioactive discharge site. Environmental samples of the Yenisei collected downstream of the radioactive discharge site differed considerably in activity concentrations of plutonium but were similar in time-dependent trends of plutonium, reflecting the trends of annual discharges of plutonium. In 2018, the year of a sharp increase in controlled discharge of plutonium, the concentration of 239,240Pu in water moss (26 Bq kg-1 d.w.) was higher than in sediments (14 Bq kg-1 d.w.). In other years, the highest activity concentration of 2391,240Pu was observed in bottom sediments. In view of the higher magnitude of increase in plutonium concentration, water moss and shining pondweed can be considered as more sensitive indicators of increased fresh releases of plutonium than bottom sediments. Taking into account the food-related mechanism of plutonium uptake by amphipods, this representative of biota can be regarded as a sensitive monitor of bioavailable plutonium in the Yenisei.

Аннотация: The taxonomic structure, typology, species richness, and total abundance of bentic and littoral macroinvertebrate communities from small lakes of the Arctic and Subarctic zones are considered on the basis of original data from three northern Palearctic regions (the foot of the Putorana Plateau, Kolguev Island, and Western Svalbard Island). A comparative analysis of the communities of these regions has been carried out. The features of High Arctic insular, Low Arctic, subarctic, and boreal lake communities are discussed using a large volume of literature data. The complex pattern of changes in the total benthos biomass of small lakes has been revealed: it decreases in the subarctic taiga, increases in the hypoarctic tundra, and decreases again in the High Arctic.

Аннотация: Abstract: The contents of isotopes of plutonium (238Pu and 239, 240Pu) and 137Cs in samples of bottom sediments and hydrobionts (water moss, amphipods, and caddisfly larvae with casings) taken in the Yenisei River in the vicinity of the radioactive discharge from the Mining and Chemical Combine in 2012 and 2018 were comparatively estimated. It is shown that the content and ratios between the specific activities of plutonium isotopes (238/239 and 240) in samples of BSs and hydrobionts increased after the recommencing of plutonium discharges into the Yenisei due to the beginning of MOX fuel production. The background content and the ratio between plutonium isotopes in BSs of the Yenisei were estimated for the first time. Hydrobionts and BSs were ranged differently according to the content of plutonium and 137Cs: we recorded the highest content of 137Cs in BSs and that of plutonium in water moss. The plutonium content in hydrobionts of the Yenisei River varies considerably, which permits specification of representatives of biota (water moss and caddisfly larvae with casings) that, along with BSs, can be used as effective indicators of ecosystem pollution with plutonium. © 2020, Pleiades Publishing, Ltd.

    Amino acid composition of epilithic biofilm and benthic animals in a large Siberian river / A. A. Kolmakova [et al.] // Freshwater Biology. - 2013. - Vol. 58, Is. 10. - P2180-2195, DOI 10.1111/fwb.12200 . - ISSN 0046-5070

Amino acids -- Epilithic microalgae and cyanobacteria -- Nutritive quality -- River ecosystem -- Zoobenthos
Аннотация: We studied amino acid (AA) composition of epilithic biofilms and zoobenthos near the shore at a middle section of the Yenisei River (Siberia, Russia). We hypothesised that there was an imbalance between the composition and content of amino acids in the biofilm and its consumers, the zoobenthos, as well as between those in the zoobenthos and fish. Based on monthly sampling from 2007 to 2010, there was seasonal variation in AA profiles in the epilithic biofilms, probably caused by the succession of microalgal and cyanobacterial species. Overall, there was an imbalance in the percentage of the essential amino acids (lysine and histidine) between benthic animals and their food (the epilithic biofilm), which suggests that benthic animals may be limited by food quality. Moreover, the zoobenthos had a significantly higher content of AA, relative to carbon, than the biofilm. Based on sampling in 2012, there was an imbalance between the AA profiles of zoobenthos and that of their main consumer, the Siberian grayling (Thymallus arcticus), particularly in the percentages of two essential amino acids, lysine and leucine. In terms of overall content of essential amino acids, the nutritional value to fish of gammarids, which have recently invaded the river, was significantly lower than that of indigenous taxa, trichopteran and chironomid larvae. Аннотация: Bryophytes are abundant in streams and are a habitat for many invertebrates, but their contribution to the diet of fluvial zoobenthos is still debated. To estimate the amount of bryophyte-derived organic matter assimilated by benthic invertebrates, we used a combination of fatty acid and stable isotope analyses during a four-year monthly study of a littoral site in the Yenisei River (Siberia, Russia). Acetylenic acids, which are highly specific biomarkers of the water moss Fontinalis antipyretica, were found in lipids of all dominant benthic animals: gammarids, ephemeropterans, chironomids and trichopterans. The dominant zoobenthic species, Eulimnogammarus viridis, had maximum levels of the biomarkers in its biomass during winter, and minimum levels in summer. The zoobenthos in the studied site regularly consume and assimilate bryophyte-derived organic matter as a minor supplemental food. This consumption increases in winter, when the main food source of the zoobenthos, epilithic biofilms, are probably scarce. В© 2010 Versita Warsaw and Springer-Verlag Wien.

Аннотация: Identification of lipid fatty acids (FA) and studying of their seasonal dynamics in water moss Fontinalis antipyretica from the Yenisei River were carried out by means of gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. FA composition of water moss was notable for a relatively low level of saturated acids and predominance of polyunsaturated acids (PUFA) with double bonds (accounting for more than 30% of total FA) and polyunsaturated acids with double and triple bonds (acetylenic acids, accounting for more than 40% of total FA). Among PUFA, ?- and ?-linolenic (18:3?3 and 18:3?6), arachidonic (20:4?6), and eicosapentaenoic (20:5?3) acids prevailed. Relative content of PUFA from ?3-family was the greatest in spring, and the level of PUFA from ?6-group was essentially the same throughout all the seasons. In the biomass of water moss, we identified seven acetylenic acids; among them octadeca-9,12-dien-6-ynoic (6a,9,12-18:3), octadeca-9,12,15-trien-6-ynoic (6a,9,12,15-18:4), and eicosa-11,14-dien-8-ynoic (8a,11,14-20:3) acids were predominant. For the first time, in the lipids of water moss we identified an acetylenic eicosa-11,14,17-trien-8-ynoic acid (8a,11,14,15-20:4). Relative content of acetylenic acids in the total FA was great throughout the entire period of investigation with the peak accumulation in summer. Owing to a steadily high level in the biomass of water moss and the lack of other producers of these acids in the ecosystem, acetylenic FA are highly specific biochemical markers useful for the investigation of trophic interactions between higher aquatic plants and zoobenthos. Аннотация: Spatial distribution of Gammarus lacustris in Lake Shira and growth of young specimens that feed on lake biota were studied. The amphipods have been shown to inhabit the littoral, sublittoral and the upper aphytal zones of the lake on stony-sandy soil and silted sand. The young and adult individuals stay apart. The young live in submerged or semi-submerged vegetation in the littoral, the adults in the sublittoral and upper aphytal zones. Maximum density of amphipods was encountered in the areas influenced by human activity. The feeding experiments revealed that the lake plankton is a more important food source for G. lacustris than any other food species. The specific growth rate measured was 0.039 d-1, with a length increment 0.095 mm d-1.
