Аннотация: Successful incorporation of soil-like substrate (SLS) into biotechnical life support systems is often complicated by the necessity to maintain the balance between flows of mineral elements taken up from the substrate by growing plants and mineral elements added to the SLS as components of mineralized plant inedible biomass. An imbalance between these two flows can be caused by the addition of recalcitrant plant waste such as wheat straw. The purpose of this study was to determine whether the availability of essential nutrients to be taken up by the roots of the wheat plants grown on the SLS could be enhanced by supplementing the SLS with the products derived from wheat straw subjected to different levels of physicochemical mineralization in the aqueous solution of hydrogen peroxide. Different degrees of straw mineralization were achieved by using different ratios of the aqueous solution of hydrogen peroxide to straw. The study showed that supplementation of the SLS with in-sufficiently oxidized products of physicochemical mineralization of straw resulted in a decrease in the grain yields. The inhibitory effect of the straw subjected to physicochemical oxidation increased with a decrease in the degree to which the straw had been oxidized. Only supplementation with the straw mineralized to the highest possible degree did not inhibit plant growth and development, and the crop yield in that treatment was higher than in the other treatments.

Аннотация: The present study addresses growth parameters and physiological and biochemical characteristics of the aerobic CO-oxidizing carboxydobacterium Seliberia carboxydohydrogena Z-1062. Poly(3-hydroxybutyrate) yields were investigated in experiments with limiting concentrations of mineral nutrients (nitrogen or sulfur or nitrogen and sulfur) in batch culture of S. carboxydohydrogena Z-1062 grown on gas mixtures consisting of CO2, O-2, H-2, and CO. CO concentrations of 10, 20, and 30 % v/v did not affect polymer synthesis, whose content after 56-h cultivation under limiting concentrations of nitrogen and sulfur was 52.6-62.8 % of biomass weight at a productivity of 0.13-0.22 g/L h. The inhibitory effect of CO on cell concentration was revealed at CO concentration of 30 % v/v. That also caused a decrease in substrate (H-2 and O-2) use efficiency. Thus, this carboxydobacterium can be regarded as a potential producer of polyhydroxyalkanoates from industrial hydrogenous sources.

Аннотация: The present study proves the presence of seasonal variability of LWRs of Arctic grayling and Siberian dace inhabiting the middle reaches of the Yenisei River. LWRs were estimated using total length (cm) and total body weight (g). The literature data on LWRs of dace and grayling from different regions were compared using log a over b plot. The comparison revealed that seasonal variability of LWRs was wider than the geographic variability for these species. The position of points on the plot can be used to predict the season of sample collection and vice versa.

Аннотация: Prospects for remote ground and satellite sensing to monitor agricultural (agrocenoses) and grass (meadows and steppes) vegetation are considered. This helps assess chlorophyll contents, crop yields, impurities of territories and identify agrocenoses. Investigation of vegetation on salinized soils identified the necessity to consider the succession of limiting factors (temperature and the degree of soil salinization). The results of studies on grassland plant communities in Khakassia based on geobotanical descriptions and ground spectral measurements are presented, allowing the refinement of methods that improve the accuracy of deciphering satellite images of medium and low resolutions.

Аннотация: 1. We studied the composition of fatty acids (FAs) in the seston from two small freshwater reservoirs (Bugach and Lesnoi) with distinct periodicity of domination by cyanobacteria and eukaryotic algae during the growth season. 2. The diatoms in the both reservoirs were characterised by a high content of 14:0 and C16 unsaturated acids, whereas that of the essential FA 20:5omega3 [eicosapentanoic acid (EPA)] was low. The correlation between this polyunsaturated FA (PUFA) and diatom biomass was not significant in either reservoir. The percentage of 20:5omega3 in seston significantly correlated with the biomass of euglenophyta in Bugach and dinophyta in Lesnoi. Hence the diatoms, usually referred as a valuable food for zooplankton, were not an important source of the essential PUFA in these systems. 3. The dominant cyanobacteria in Bugach, and the green algae in Lesnoi, both contained the same marker acids: 18:3omega3 and 18:2omega6. Hence, a discrimination between these two phytoplanktonic groups on the basis of FA biomarkers may be difficult in some cases. 4. We found no significant correlation between the content of 20:5omega3 in seston and the biomass of the dominant daphniids in either reservoir. This is contrary to expectations, based on the literature, that EPA is generally important. Rather, the biomass of the two dominant Daphnia species in Bugach correlated strongly with the content of 18:3omega3 in the seston. The cyanobacteria were a probable source of this omega3 FA for Daphnia . We conclude that EPA is not always important for Daphnia populations although, in such cases, some other PUFA (e.g. 18:3omega3) might be related to their growth.

Аннотация: Serum-deprived (0.2 %) resting and serum-stimulated (10 %) proliferating NIH 3T3 mouse fibroblasts were fused with hepatocytes from intact, regenerating and embryonic mouse livers to elucidate mechanisms of liver cell proliferation, DNA synthesis being investigated in nuclei of heterokaryons and non-fused cells using radioautography. Hepatocytes in heterokaryons were found to have no inhibitory effect on the entry of stimulated fibroblast nuclei into the S-period, but on the contrary they were involved in DNA synthesis. In addition, the nuclei in heterokaryons mutually stimulated each other to enter the S-period. In their turn, the resting fibroblasts did not prevent the proliferating hepatocytes from the regenerating and embryonic livers to enter the S-period. Possible reasons of the absence of inhibitory effect of differentiated cells in heterokaryons are discussed. The data obtained enable us to conclude that the mechanism of proliferative process control in resting immortalized cells differs from that in differentiated cells where proliferation seems to be stopped without affecting the endogenous inhibitor postulated for the resting and ageing fibroblasts.

Аннотация: For the first time, seasonal changes in the content of total lipids (TLs) and phospholipids (PLs) were studied in fodder plants growing in Central Yakutia-a perennial cereal, smooth brome (Bromopsis inermis L.), and an annual cereal, common oat (Avena sativa L.). Both species have concentrated TLs and PLs in autumn under cold hardening. In addition, a significant increase in the content of fatty acids (FAs) of B. inermis was observed during the autumn decrease in temperature. The Yakutian horses, which fed on cereals enriched with nutrients preserved by natural cold (green cryo-fodder), accumulated significant amounts of 18:2n-6 and 18:3n-3, the total content of which in cereals was 75% of the total FA content. We found differences in the distribution of these two FAs in different tissues of the horses. Thus, liver was rich in 18:2n-6, while muscle and adipose tissues accumulated mainly 18:3n-3. Such a distribution may indicate different roles of these FAs in the metabolism of the horses. According to FA content, meat of the Yakutian horses is a valuable dietary product.

Аннотация: It has been shown that the main drivers of the dynamics of cladoceran and copepod abundances can be predators (fish), the quantity and/or quality of food in terms of the contents of eicosapentaenoic acid, phosphorus and nitrogen in the seston under eutrophic conditions. In experimental mesocosms under eutrophic conditions, we found that, fish did not affect the quantity and quality of food resources for crustaceans. In the second half of experiments, however, dominance shifted from copepods to cladocerans. This was due to the improvement of the food quality for cladocerans in terms of the carbon-to-phosphorus ratio in the seston rather than to fish predation. Under eutrophic conditions, fish reduced the biomass of both cladocerans and copepods without changing the ratio between them.

Аннотация: The laboratory testing of bottom sediments (BSs) from the Yenisei River containing different concentrations of technogenic radionuclides, heavy metals, and biogenic elements (N and P) based on aquatic such plants as Elodea canadensis (Canadian waterweed) and Myriophyllum spicatum (Eurasian watermilfoil) has revealed a higher sensitivity of roots to the general quality of BSs than shoots: shoot length (9%) root length (11%) root number (15%) in M. spicatum; shoot length (22%) root length (42%) root number (44%) in E. canadensis. In contrast to M. spicatum, the growth parameters of roots and shoots in E. canadensis have differed in a significant statistical manner between most BS samples. A reverse correlation has been found between the increase in shoot length and the activity of technogenic radionuclides in BSs, which is mostly significant in E. canadensis (r (2)

Аннотация: Diverse, multidirectional changes in biochemical composition of seston, plankton, and fish fry are detected in the coastal zone of a plain reservoir in the vicinity of a semiaquatic bird colony during vegetation season with extra high water level. Under these conditions, specific patterns of phyto- and zooplankton structure and quantitative characteristics, that, as was found out earlier, result from the vital activity of birds belonging to the family Ardeidae (namely, raising the share of mixotrophic phytoflagellates and copepods in plankton species composition) are leveled out. The main role in this process belongs to decomposition of immersed vegetation in the coastal zone, development of littoral macrophytes, and trophic relationships between algae and invertebrates. However, increase in atmospheric precipitation leads to increase in copepods abundance, which seems to be related to fast and intensive inflow of nitrogen-rich products of birds' vital activity. Due to this, during the whole period of observations, the following tendencies are revealed in biochemical composition of seston, plankton, and fish fry in the vicinity of the bird colony: 1) concentrations of carbon, nitrogen, and phosphorus and their ratios turn out to be auspicious for predominance of diatoms and mixotrophic phytoflagellates, rich in docosahexaenoic acid (DSA); 2) the abundance of phytoplankton, rich in polyunsaturated essential fatty acids (PEFA), favors propagation of those planktonic crustaceans which contain significantly more DSA and are more valuable food items for fish; 3) predominance of zooplankters, rich in PEFA, leads to higher concentration of PEFA in fry fish tissues, which, in certain periods, turns out to be advantageous for successful development and growth of dominant species of fish fry,such as roach, bream, white bream, and perch, by comparison with the test site.

Аннотация: We have studied the fatty acid (FA) contents and composition of cladocerans and copepods from warm and cold lakes. We have found no significant differences in FA percent levels and per carbon contents of cladocerans from warm and cold lakes or of copepods from warm and cold lakes. A discriminant analysis showed that all cladocerans differed from all copepods mainly due to the content of docosahexaenoic acid. Compared to cladocerans, copepods had significantly higher levels of all C22 polyunsaturated FA. Thus, we conclude that cladocerans and copepods in all environments had comparatively invariant taxon-specific compositions and contents of long-chain highly unsaturated fatty acids (HUFAs). According to HUFA content, all studied copepods can be regarded as a valuable food for fish.

Аннотация: In experimental aquatic microcosms (AMCs), the population of the Escherichia coli strain Z905 harboring the recombinant plasmid pPHL7 (Ap(r)Lux(+)) was found to gradually accumulate AMC-adapted cells, which retained the plasmid but differed from the original cells in some biochemical and physiological characteristics. Both the original and the AMC-adapted E. coil cells could coexist with the native AMC microflora for one year or longer. When introduced into AMCs together with native pseudomonads, the AMC-adapted E. coil Z905-33 (pPHL7) cells were more competitive than the nonadapted cells.

Аннотация: The emission of different, diamond coatings on silicon field emitter. arrays were investigated: chemical vapor deposition diamond, high pressure and high temperature synthetic diamond, and shock-synthesized nanodiamond. Practical emission characteristics such as: emission threshold, maximum current, current stability, and reproducibility were tested.
