Аннотация: The efficiency of the transfer of gamma-emitting radionuclides in food chains, including macrophytes, zoobenthos, and bentho- and ichthyophagist fish, was estimated in the radiation-polluted region of the Yenisei river. Significant differences in the efficiency of the transfer of natural and technogenic radionuclides between components of different trophic levels were revealed. Substantial species-related differences in the accumulation of radionuclides in ichthyophagist fish from food were revealed. В© 2012 Pleiades Publishing, Ltd.

Аннотация: Biodegradability patterns of two PHAs: a polymer of 3-hydroxybutyric acid (3-PHB) and a copolymer of 3-hydroxybutyric and 3-hydroxyvaleric acids (3-PHB/3-PHV) containing 11 mol% of hydroxyvalerate, were studied in the tropical marine environment, in the South China Sea (Nha Trang, Vietnam). No significant differences have been observed between degradation rates of 3-PHB and 3-PHB/3-PHV specimens; it has been found that under study conditions, biodegradation is rather influenced by the shape of the polymer item and the preparation technique than by the chemical composition of the polymer. Biodegradation rates of polymer films in seawater have been found to be higher than those of compacted pellets. As 3-PHB and 3-PHB/3-PHV are degraded and the specimens lose their mass, molecular weight of both polymers is decreased, i.e. polymer chains get destroyed. The polydispersity index of the PHAs grows significantly. However, the degree of crystallinity of both PHAs remains unchanged, i.e. the amorphous phase and the crystalline one are equally disintegrated. PHA-degrading microorganisms were isolated using the clear-zone technique, by inoculating the isolates onto mineral agar that contained PHA as sole carbon source. Based on the 16S rRNA analysis, the PHA-degrading strains were identified as Enterobacter sp. (four strains), Bacillus sp. and Gracilibacillus sp.В© 2010 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Аннотация: The study addresses the effect of different conditions of carbon nutrition on synthesis of polyhydroxyalkanoates by the bacterium Wautersia eutropha. In experiments with two wild type strains (H16 and 65786), it has been first found that under mixotrophic growth conditions - Co2 + co-substrate (alkanoic acids) - bacteria can synthesize multi-component PHAs, consisting of short- and medium-chainlength monomers with carbon chains containing 4 to 8 atoms. It has been shown that PHA composition is determined by the type of the co-substrate. Fatty acids with odd number of carbons induce bacteria to synthesize four- and five-component PHAs with hydroxybutyrate, hydroxyvalerate as major monomers and hydroxyhexanoate, hydroxyheptanoate and hydroxyoctanoate as minor, occasionally occurring, ones. Fatty acids with even number of carbons induce synthesis of not only their respective monomers (hydroxyhexanoate and hydroxyoctanoate) but also hydroxyvalerate, making possible synthesis of four-component PHAs, containing hydroxybutyrate and hydroxyhexanoate as major components (up to 18 mol%). A family of short- and medium-chain-length four- and five-component PHAs were synthesized and their physicochemical properties examined. Copyright В© 2008 WILEY-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. KGaA.

Aquatic ecosystems -- Docosahexaenoic acid -- Eicosapentaenoic acid -- Trophic transfer efficiency
Аннотация: Most omnivorous animals, including humans, have to some degree relied on physiologically important polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs), such as eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) from food. Only some taxa of microalgae, rather than higher plants can synthesize de novo high amounts of EPA and DHA. Once synthesized by microalgae, PUFA are transferred through trophic chain to organisms of higher levels. Thus, aquatic ecosystems play the unique role in the Biosphere as the principal source of EPA and DHA for most omnivorous animals, including inhabitants of terrestrial ecosystems. PUFA are transferred from aquatic to terrestrial ecosystems through riparian predators, drift of carrion and seaweeds, emergence of amphibiotic insects, and water birds. The essential PUFA are transferred through trophic chains with about twice higher efficiency than bulk carbon. Thereby, PUFA are accumulated, rather than diluted in biomass of organisms of higher trophic levels, e.g., in fish. Mankind is faced with a severe deficiency of EPA and DHA in diet. Although additional sources of PUFA supply for humans, such as aquaculture, biotechnology of microorganisms and transgenic terrestrial oil-seed producing plants are developed, natural fish production of aquatic ecosystems will remain one of the main sources of EPA and DHA for humans. Aquatic ecosystems have to be protected from anthropogenic impacts, such as eutrophication, pollution and warming, which reduce PUFA production. В© 2013 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

Аннотация: One of the central paradigms of ecology is that only about 10% of organic carbon production of one trophic level is incorporated into new biomass of organisms of the next trophic level. Many of energy-yielding compounds of carbon are designated as 'essential', because they cannot be synthesized de novo by consumers and must be obtained with food, while they play important structural and regulatory functions. The question arises: are the essential compounds transferred through trophic chains with the same efficiency as bulk carbon? To answer this question, we measured gross primary production of phytoplankton and secondary production of zooplankton and content of organic carbon and essential polyunsaturated fatty acids of ?-3 family with 18-22 carbon atoms (PUFA) in the biomass of phytoplankton and zooplankton in a small eutrophic reservoir during two summers. Transfer efficiency between the two trophic levels, phytoplankton (producers) and zooplankton (consumers), was calculated as ratio of the primary production versus the secondary (zooplankton) production for both carbon and PUFA. We found that the essential PUFA were transferred from the producers to the primary consumers with about twice higher efficiency than bulk carbon. In contrast, polyunsaturated fatty acids with 16 carbon atoms, which are synthesized exclusively by phytoplankton, but are not essential for animals, had significantly lower transfer efficiency than both bulk carbon, and essential PUFA. Thus, the trophic pyramid concept, which implicitly implies that all the energy-yielding compounds of carbon are transferred from one trophic level to the next with the same efficiency of about on average 10%, should be specified for different carbon compounds. Аннотация: Methods of atomic absorption, flame photometry, and emission spectral analysis were used to study the concentrations of metals in water and major ecosystem components of the Yenisei River upstream of Krasnoyarsk City (conventionally background area). The mean bulk concentrations of Al and Cu in water exceeded the MAC for water bodies used for fishery. Cu concentration in freshwater shrimp was found to be reliably higher than that in the link of primary producers (periphyton), and Cd concentration in caddis fly larvae was found to exceed that in water moss. The maximal concentrations of metals among the examined aquatic organisms were recorded in periphyton. Cr concentration in the muscles of Arctic grayling was found to exceed some international standards. В© 2009 Pleiades Publishing, Ltd.

Аннотация: The structures of the ground state of a discrete model of two interacting helical chains are investigated by the discrete mapping method. When non-interacting chains have different spatial periods, the ground state structure of the model depends on the value of the interaction constant ?. We show the existence of a critical value ?c at which the chains form a common helix. Regular soliton structure is realized for ???c as a ground state. For ??c the system ground state passes through a sequence of transitions of incomplete devil's staircase type. Metastable chaotic structures are shown to exist. В© 1987.

Аннотация: Using biotic turnover of substances in trophic chains, natural and artificial ecosystems are similar in functioning, but different in structure. It is necessary to have quantitative criteria to evaluate the efficiency of artificial ecosystems (AES). These criteria are dependent on the specific objectives for which the AES are designed. For example, if AES is considered for use in space, important criteria are efficiency in use of mass, power, volume (size) and human labor and reliability. Another task involves the determination of quantitative criteria for the functioning of natural ecosystems. To solve the problem, it is fruitful to use a hierarchical approach suitable for both individual links and the ecosystem as a whole. Energy flux criteria (principles) were developed to estimate the functional activities of biosystems at the population, community and ecosystem levels. A major feature of ecosystems as a whole is their biotic turnover of matter the rate of which is restricted by the lack of limiting substances. Obviously, the most generalized criterion is to take into account the energy flux used by the biosystem and the quantity of limiting substance included in its turnover. The use of energy flux by ecosystem, EUSED - is determined from the photoassimilation of CO2 by plants (per time unit). It can be approximately estimated as the net primary production of photosynthesis (NPP). So, the ratio of CO 2 photoassimilation rate (sometimes, measured as NPP) to the total mass of limiting substrate can serve as a main universal criterion (MUC). This MUC characterizes the specific cycling rate of limiting chemical elements in the system and effectiveness of every ecosystem including the global Biosphere. Comparative analysis and elaboration of quantitative criteria for estimation of natural and artificial ecosystems activities is of high importance both for theoretical considerations and for real applications. Аннотация: The work analyzes functioning of a "producer-consumer" closed aquatic system with spatially separated links, where each component consisted of two species. Producers in the system were the microalgae of Chlorella vulgaris and Scenedesmus sp., consumers - Paramecium caudatum infusoria and Brachionus sp. rotifers. In the experiment the competing predators were consuming on a mixed culture of algae, and the competition of algae was studied under nitrogen limitation. Under these conditions competitiveness of Scenedemus was higher than that of Chlorella vulgaris. Metabolism products of Scenedesmus algae have been found to have negative effect on reproduction of Paramecium caudatum protozoa. Predator population dynamics in the "consumer" link demonstrated that the rotifers that consume two algal species are more competitive compared to protozoa feeding on chlorella only. В© 2001 COSPAR. Аннотация: Ca2+-regulated photoproteins are responsible for the bioluminescence of a variety of marine organisms, mostly coelenterates. The photoproteins consist of a single polypeptide chain to which an imidazopyrazinone derivative (2-hydroperoxycoelenterazine) is tightly bound. According to photoprotein spatial structures the side chains of His175, Trp179, and Tyr190 in obelin and His169, Trp173, Tyr184 in aequorin are at distances that allow hydrogen bonding with the peroxide and carbonyl groups of the 2-hydroperoxycoelenterazine ligand. We replaced these amino acids in both photoproteins by residues with different hydrogen bond donor-acceptor capacity. All mutants exhibited luciferase-like bioluminescence activity, hardly present in the wild-type photoproteins, and showed low or no photoprotein activity, except for aeqH169Q (24% of wild-type activity), obeW179Y (23%), obeW179F (67%), obeY190F (14%), and aeqY184F (22%). The results clearly support the supposition made from photoprotein spatial structures that the hydrogen bond network formed by His-Trp-Tyr triad participates in stabilizing the 2-hydroperoxy adduct of coelenterazine. These residues are also essential for the positioning of the 2-hydroperoxycoelenterazine intermediate, light emitting reaction, and for the formation of active photoprotein. In addition, we demonstrate that although the positions of His-Trp-Tyr residues in aequorin and obelin spatial structures are almost identical the substitution effects might be noticeably different.

Bioluminescence -- Coelenterazine -- Obelin -- Aequorin -- Photoprotein
Аннотация: Bioluminescence of a variety of marine organisms is caused by monomeric Ca2+-regulated photoproteins, to which a peroxy-substituted coelenterazine, 2-hydroperoxycoelenterazine, is firmly bound. From the spatial structure the side chains of Tyr138, His175, Trp179, and Tyr190 of obelin are situated within the substrate-binding pocket at hydrogen bond distances with different atoms of the 2-hydroperoxycoelenterazine. Here we characterized several obelin mutants with substitutions of these residues regarding their bioluminescence, coelenterazine binding, and kinetics of active obelin formation. We demonstrate that Tyr138, His175, Trp179, and Tyr190 are all important for coelenterazine activation; substitution of any of these residues leads to significant decrease of the apparent reaction rate. The hydrogen bond network formed by Tyr138, Trp179 and Tyr190 participates in the proper positioning of coelenterazine in the active site and subsequent stabilization of the 2-hydroperoxy adduct of coelenterazine. His175 might serve as a proton shuttle during 2-hydroperoxycoelenterazine formation. (C) 2013 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Eicosapentaenoic acid -- Docosahexaenoic acid -- Aquatic ecosystems -- Trophic transfer efficiency
(C) 2013 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

Under these conditions competitiveness of Scenedesmus was higher than that of Chlorella vulgaris. (C) 2001 COSPAR. Аннотация: Experimental formulations of herbicide metribuzin embedded in matrices of degradable natural polymer poly(3-hydroxybutyrate) (P3HB) and its composites with poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG), poly-?-caprolactone (PCL), and wood powder have been prepared in the form of pressed pellets containing 75% polymeric basis (pure P3HB or its composite with a second component at a ratio of 7:3) and 25% metribuzin. Incubation of formulations in soil laboratory systems led to the degradation of the matrix and herbicide release. The most active release of metribuzin (about 60% of the embedded herbicide over 35 days) was detected for the P3HB/PEG carrier compared to the P3HB, P3HB/wood, and P3HB/PCL forms (30-40%). Thus, the study shows that herbicide release can be controlled by the matrix formulation. Metribuzin formulations exerted a significant herbicidal effect on the plant Agrostis stolonifera, used as a weed plant model. Application of these long-term formulations will make it possible to reduce environmental release of chemicals, which will restrict the rate of their accumulation in trophic chains of ecosystems and abate their adverse effects on the biosphere. © 2016 American Chemical Society.

Аннотация: Cupriavidus eutrophus В10646 was used to synthesize a series of polyhydroxyalkanoate (PHA) quaterpolymers composed of the short-chain-length 3-hydroxybutyrate (3HB), 4-hydroxybutyrate (4HB), and 3-hydroxyvalerate (3HV) and the medium-chain-length 3-hydroxyhexanoate (3HHx). The molar fraction of 3HB in the quaterpolymers varied between 63.5 and 93.1 mol.%, 3HV – between 1.1 and 24.6 mol.%, 4HB – between 2.4 and 15.6 mol.%, and 3HHx – between 0.4 and 4.8 mol.%. The properties of PHA quaterpolymers were significantly different from those of the P(3HB) homopolymer: they had much lower degrees of crystallinity (up to 30–45%), and lower melting points and thermal decomposition temperatures, with the interval between these temperatures remaining practically unchanged. Films prepared from PHA quaterpolymers were rougher and more porous than P(3HB) films; they showed higher values of elongation at break (up to 6–113%), i.e. were more elastic. Films prepared from PHA quaterpolymers were biocompatible and had no toxic effect on mouse fibroblast NIH 3T3 cells. © 2016 Elsevier Ltd
