Аннотация: Accumulation of americium ( 241Am) and plutonium ( 238,242Pu) and their distribution in cell compartments and biochemical components of the biomass of freshwater aquatic plants Elodea canadensis, Ceratophyllum demersum and Myrioplyllum spicatum and aquatic moss Fontinalis antipyretica have been investigated in laboratory experiments. Americium and plutonium taken up from water by Elodea canadensis apical shoots were mainly absorbed by structural components of plant cells (90% for 241Am; 89% for 238Pu and 82-87% for 242Pu). About 10-18% of isotope activity was recorded in the cytosol fraction. The major concentration (76-92%) of americium was bound to cell wall cellulose-like polysaccharides of Elodea canadensis, Myriophyllum spicatum, Ceratophyllum demersum and Fontinalis antipyretica, 8-24% of americium activity was registered in the fraction of proteins and carbohydrates, and just a minor concentration (<1%) in the lipid fraction. The distribution of plutonium in the biomass fractions of Elodea was similar to that of americium. Hence, americium and plutonium had the highest affinity to cellulose-like polysaccharides of cell walls of freshwater submerged macrophytes. В© 2011 Akademiai Kiado, Budapest, Hungary.

Аннотация: During three field seasons (June-September) of 1997-99 contents of Na, K, Ca, Mg, Fe, Mn, Zn, Cu, Al, Cr, Ni, Cd, and Pb were determined in compartments of ecosystem (surrounding soils, bottom sediments, water, zoobenthos, macrophytes, and fish) of a fish and recreation pond situated at the edge of Krasnoyarsk City (Siberia, Russia). Contents of most parts of metals in soils, water, and macrophytes significantly correlated with each other. As concluded, their contents were determined by natural, general, geochemical peculiarities of the region. Heavy metals, contents of which were higher than federal upper limits of concentration, were revealed. In muscles of fish with different feeding spectra - crucian and perch - concentrations of some metals differed significantly; correlation graphs for metals also had different structures. Comparison of our data with those on diverse aquatic ecosystems of Siberia, Europe, North America, and China published in the last decade was carried out. It was concluded that a distribution of heavy metals in the compartments of an aquatic ecosystem presently have to be determined for each particular water body until general regularities are discovered.

Аннотация: MELiSSA is a microorganism based artificial ecosystem conceived as a tool for understanding the behavior of ecosystems and developing the technology for future Manned Space Missions. MELiSSA is composed of four compartments colonized by the microorganisms required by the function of this ecosystem : breakdown of waste produced by men, regeneration of atmosphere and biosynthesis of edible biomass. This paper reports the mass balance description of a Biological Life Support System composed of the MELiSSA loop and of a Higher Plant Compartment working in parallel with the photosynthetic Spirulina compartment producing edible biomass. The recycling efficiencies of the system are determined and compared for various working conditions of the MELiSSA loop with or without the HPC. Аннотация: Calcium ion is a ubiquitous intracellular messenger, performing this function in many eukaryotic cells. To understand calcium regulation mechanisms and how disturbances of these mechanisms are associated with disease states, it is necessary to measure calcium inside cells. Ca2+-regulated photoproteins have been successfully used for this purpose for many years. Here we report the results of comparative studies on the properties of recombinant aequorin from Aequorea victoria, recombinant obelins from Obelia geniculata and Obelia longissima, recombinant mitrocomin from Mitrocoma cellularia, and recombinant clytin from Clytia gregaria as intracellular calcium indicators in a set of identical in vitro and in vivo experiments. Although photoproteins reveal a high degree of identity of amino acid sequences and spatial structures, and, apparently, have a common mechanism for the bioluminescence reaction, they were found to differ in the Ca2+ concentration detection limit, the sensitivity of bioluminescence to Mg2+, and the rates of the rise of the luminescence signal with a sudden change of Ca2+ concentration. In addition, the bioluminescence activities of Chinese hamster ovary cells expressing wild-type photoproteins also differed. The light signals of cells expressing mitrocomin, for example, slightly exceeded the background, suggesting that mitrocomin may be hardly used to detect intracellular Ca2+ without modifications improving its properties. On the basis of experiments on the activation of endogenous P2Y2 receptor in Chinese hamster ovary cells by ATP, we suggest that wild-type aequorin and obelin from O. longissima are more suitable for calcium detection in cytoplasm, whereas clytin and obelin from O. geniculata can be used for calcium measurement in cell compartments with high Ca2+ concentration. Аннотация: This paper presents a mathematical model of interactions between two herbivorous invertebrates (ciliate Paramecium caudatum and rotifer Brachionus plicatilis) and two planktonic algae (Chlorella vulgaris and Scenedesmus quadricauda) spatially segregated in two compartments of a chemostat - type experimental microcosm system. The model mimics a "producer-consumer" aquatic biotic cycle, describing the dynamics of the mixed culture of ciliates and rotifers, as "consumer" compartment, feeding on the mixed algal culture, as "producer" compartment, under N-limiting conditions. We experimentally found that metabolites of the alga Scenedesmus produce an adverse effect on the reproduction of ciliate Paramecium. Taking this effect into account improved the behavior of the model, the results of which came into qualitative agreement with the experimental results. Both our experimental and modeling approaches demonstrated that, even in conditions of a spatially - segregated "producer-consumer" biotic cycle, species coexistence is impossible either in the mixed algal culture or in the mixed invertebrate culture. Scenedesmus excluded Chlorella, whereas Brachionus excluded Paramecium.

Аннотация: A "producer-consumer" (Chlorella vulgaris-Paramecium caudatum) closed aquatic system has been investigated experimentally and theoretically. It has been found that there is a direct relationship between the growth of the paramecia population and their release of ammonia nitrogen, which is the best form of nitrogen for Chlorella growth. The theoretical study of a model of a "producer-consumer" aquatic biotic cycle with spatially separated compartments has confirmed the contribution of paramecia to nitrogen cycling. It has been shown that an increase in the concentration of nitrogen released as metabolites of paramecia is accompanied by an increase in the productivity of microalgae. (c) 2005 COSPAR. nuisance algal blooms -- Ulva -- Cladophora -- Spirogyra -- metaphyton -- benthification
Аннотация: In recent decades, alongside the comparatively well-studied bloom caused by phytoplankton, a bloom of marine and fresh waters caused by littoral benthic macroalgae of three generaUlva, Cladophora, and Spirogyrahave become a global phenomenon. In the present review, an attempt is made to gain an understanding of why it is these taxa of green filamentous algae that start to grow rapidly in the spring in many water bodies and streams, including oligotrophic waters, and then float up from the bottom, forming floating mats (metaphyton); then their decaying masses are washed ashore and cause substantial ecological and economical losses. Peculiar and common ecological and physiological features of Ulva, Cladophora, and Spirogyra favorable for the formation of green tides are considered. Although eutrophication (the supply of nitrogen and phosphorus from agricultural lands, industrial and domestic wastewaters, and aquaculture) is the evident cause of the increase in algal biomass, it is suggested that the location of external fluxes of inorganic nutrients (surface runoff or groundwater discharge), as well as the biogenic redirection of internal fluxes of nitrogen and phosphorus from pelagial to littoral (benthification), play a key role in the formation of green tides. Measures for controlling green tides are discussed. The necessity for detailed studies of the metaphytonic form of vegetation of benthic macroalgae is emphasized. Obviously, a revision of the present concept of oligotrophic/eutrophic waters which considers only the pelagic compartments of aquatic ecosystems is required.

Sirtuins -- NAD -- biomarker -- proteomics -- calorie restriction -- longitivity
Аннотация: There is a poor relationship between nutrient intake and existing nutritional biomarkers due to variety of factors affecting their sensitivity and specificity. To explore the impact of nutrients at molecular level and devising a sensitive biomarker, proteomics is a central technology with sirtuins as one of the most promising nutritional biomarker. Sirtuins (seven mammalian sirtuins reported so far) have been reported to perform protein deacetylases and ADP-ribosyltransferases activity. It is distributed in different cellular compartments thereby controlling several metabolic processes. Sirtuins are oxidized nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide dependent, which implicates a direct effect of the metabolic state of the cell on its activity. Calorie restriction upregulates the mammalian sirtuin protein levels in variety of tissues and organs where it acts upon both histone and nonhistone substrates. Sirtuin senses nutrient availability and impacts gluconeogenesis, glycolysis, and insulin sensitivity. It deacetylates and inhibits the nuclear receptor that activates fat synthesis and adipogenesis in the body, leading to fat loss and bringing favorable cellular and health changes. Sirtuins mediates intracellular response that promotes cell survival, DNA damage repair thereby increasing the cell longitivity. The activation of sirtuins brings a wide spectrum of other health benefits and its activity levels are indicative of nutritional status as well as disease progression in cancer, inflammation, obesity, cardiovascular diseases, and viral infections. There are several foods that activate sirtuin activity and offer significant health benefits by their consumption.
