Аннотация: It was recently reported that radioactive fallout due to the Fukushima Nuclear Accident was detected in environmental samples collected in the USA and Greece, which are very far away from Japan. In April-May 2011, fallout radionuclides ( 134Cs, 137Cs, 131I) released in the Fukushima Nuclear Accident were detected in environmental samples at the city of Krasnoyarsk (Russia), situated in the center of Asia. Similar maximum levels of 131I and 137Cs/ 134Cs and 131I/ 137Cs ratios in water samples collected in Russia and Greece suggest the high-velocity movement of the radioactive contamination from the Fukushima Nuclear Accident and the global effects of this accident, similar to those caused by the Chernobyl accident. Аннотация: The source of radioactive contamination of the Yenisei River floodplain, including contamination with actinides, is the Mining-and-Chemical combine (MCC), which has for many years been producing weapons-grade plutonium. Actinides have been detected not only in the soil and sediment of the river but also in the biomass of aquatic plants. The aim of our investigation was to assess the levels of actinides and other radionuclides in sediments and aquatic plants both near the MCC and at a considerable distance from it, down the Yenisei River. Investigations of the Yenisei River sediment samples revealed high activity concentrations of actinides (Pu isotopes and 241Am), which were 100 times higher than their global fallout levels. Sequential extraction of radionuclides from samples of sediments collected near the MCC showed that the amounts of extracted 241Am were the largest (up to 98% of initial activity). It was found that aquatic plants of the Yenisei River collected both near the MCC discharge site and at a distance up to 200 km downstream contained several actinide isotopes. The aquatic moss, Fontinalis antipyretica, was found to contain higher levels of radionuclides than Potamogeton lucens. Leaves of P. lucens contained higher levels of radionuclides, including 239Np, than stems. Sequential extraction of radionuclides from samples of aquatic plants showed that 239Np levels in exchangeable and adsorption fractions of P. lucens biomass were higher than in the respective fractions of F. antipyretica biomass. Аннотация: The source of radioactive contamination of the Yenisei River floodplain, including contamination with transuranic elements, is the Mining-and-Chemical Combine of the Russian Ministry of Atomic Energy, which has for many years been producing weapons-grade plutonium. Transuranic elements have been detected not only in the soil and sediment of the river but also in the biomass of aquatic plants. This work is an investigation of accumulation and release of 241Am by a submerged macrophyte of the Yenisei River (Elodea canadensis) in laboratory experiments. In 2000-2003, laboratory experiments were carried out with biomass of E. canadensis Mich. and filtered river water. The samples were collected from the Yenisei River upstream of the discharge of the Combine's radioactive effluent. The experiments showed that 241Am is accumulated by Elodea biomass: the activity concentration of 241Am can reach 3280 В± 240 Bq/g, with the concentration factor for 241Am 16 600 В± 2200 l/kg. Results of chemical fractionation have proved that in the course of 241Am accumulation by Elodea biomass, 241Am tightly bound to biomass increases from 11% to 27% of the total 241Am in the biomass. Release of 241Am from the decaying Elodea biomass has been evaluated experimentally. By the end of the experiment (lasting up to 127 days), the Elodea plants had lost up to 65% of their initial 241Am activity and the rate of 241Am release into the water environment reached 23 Bq/day.     The effect of radionuclide and heavy metal contamination of the Yenisei River on cytogenetics of aquatic plant Elodea canadensis / A. Bolsunovsky [et al.] // Radioprotection. - 2009. - Vol. 44, Is. 5. - P83-88, DOI 10.1051/radiopro/20095021 . - ISSN 0033-8451
Аннотация: The study was done to determine concentrations of radionuclides and heavy metals and to evaluate the frequency of chromosomal aberrations in samples of Elodea canadensis, a submerged plant, collected in different parts of the Yenisei River. Samples were collected in the area subjected to radioactive impact of theMining-and-Chemical Combine (MCC) at Zheleznogorsk and in the control areas, upstream of the MCC. The investigations showed that Elodea biomass in the area affected by MCC operation contained a long inventory of artificial radionuclides typical of the MCC discharges. Upstream of the MCC, in the control sampling areas, the sediments and the Elodea biomass contained only one artificial radionuclide - 137Cs. Thus, the exposure doses to Elodea shoots and roots upstream of the MCC are small (not more than 8 ?Gy/d) and the main contribution to them is made by natural radionuclides. At the MCC discharge site (the village of Atamanovo) and downstream of it, the total dose rate increases almost an order of magnitude, reaching its maximal values - 72 ?Gy/d for Elodea shoots and 58 ? Gy/d for roots. Cytogenetic investigations of Elodea roots showed that at the MCC discharge site (the village of Atamanovo) and downstream of it the occurrence of chromosomal aberrations in ana-telophase and metaphase cells of Elodea was considerably higher than in the control area. It is highly probable that this simultaneous dramatic increase in the total exposure rate and the occurrence of chromosomal aberrations in Elodea is associated with the radiation factor. It is suggested that Elodea is affected not only by the radiation factor but also by the chemical factor - toxicity of heavy metals. В© 2009 EDP Sciences.

Аннотация: Releases from the nuclear facility Mining-and-Chemical Combine (MCC) located at Zheleznogorsk have contributed to the radionuclide contamination of the Yenisei River since operations commenced in 1958. The aim of this study was to assess the activity concentrations of artificial radionuclides and the strength of their binding in Yenisei River sediments. Investigation of Yenisei River sediment samples revealed the presence of artificial radionuclides typical of the MCC radioactive discharge: namely, isotopes of europium, caesium, 60Co and transuranium elements. The concentrations of artificial radionuclides in the sediment layers remain relatively high as far as 200 km downstream of the MCC. In sediment cores collected upstream of the MCC, ? -spectrometric measurements registered only one artificial radionuclide, 137Cs, with a maximal activity of 8 BqВ·kg -1. Sequential extraction performed on samples of the upper layers of the sediment core showed different degrees of potential environmental availability for artificial radionuclides: the highest was recorded for 241Am and 152Eu (up to 85% of initial activity), followed by 60Co (up to 32%), and finally, 137Cs (up to 15%). In a few samples, 241Am was present in the unextractable form, which may be accounted for by the presence of reactor fuel microparticles. В© 2010 Taylor & Francis.

Аннотация: A one-dimensional mathematical model of the Yenisei river ecosystem including hydrological, ecosystem and radioecologicl blocks has been developed. The model was used to evaluate contribution of different processes (transfer by water masses, dilution, radioactive decay, bioaccumulation) into self-purification of the river water from a radiation pollution. The pollution density of ecosystem components (bacteria, phyto-, zooplankton, phyto-, zoobenthos, detritus) with 137Cs and 32P is calculated.

Аннотация: The aim of the paper is to investigate accumulation of artificial radionuclides by the Yenisei river aquatic plants collected in the area affected by the activity of the Mining-and-Chemical Combine (Zheleznogorsk) from 1997 to 2000. The samples of aquatic plants were of four species: Potamogeton lucens, Fontinalis antipyretica, Elodea canadensis, and Ceratophyllum demersum. The gamma-spectrometric analysis of the samples of aquatic plants for artificial radionuclides revealed a wide spectrum of radionuclides. Radionuclides of activation origin were found in the aquatic plants taken both near the Combine and 200 km down of it. The radiochemical analysis of aquatic plants revealed strontium and plutonium isotopes. Among the aquatic plants, the highest concentration factors for the principal radionuclides were recorded in Fontinalis antipyretica (water moss).

Fatty acids -- Polyhydroxyalkanoates -- Wautersia eutropha -- Cupriavidus necator
Аннотация: The fatty acid composition of the lipids of a Wautersia eutropha polyhydroxyalkanoate-producing strain was studied by chromato-mass spectrometry. A total of 27 fatty acids were identified; their distribution in the cell fractions was determined. In the cytoplasmic membrane, palmitic, palmitoleic, and cis-vaccenic acids were the major components. Long-chain ?-hydroxy acids and myristic acids (components of the lipopolysaccharides of the cell envelope) predominated in the fraction of strongly bound lipids. When the polymer was actively synthesized, the content of cyclopropane acids in the easily extracted lipids increased and the content of the corresponding monoenoic acids decreased. The strongly bound lipids had a high content of long-chain ?-hydroxy acids (more than 50% of the total fatty acids). These results made it possible to determine the source of polyhydroxyalkanoate (PHA) contamination and to choose the strategy for their purification. В© 2007 Pleiades Publishing, Ltd.

Аннотация: This paper reports an investigation of the tritium content in the surface waters of the Yenisei River basin near the Mining and Chemical Combine (MCC). In 2001 the maximum tritium concentration in the Yenisei River did not exceed 4 В± 1 Bq l-1, which is consistent with the data of 1998-99. However, it has been found that there are surface waters containing enhanced tritium as compared with the background values for the Yenisei River. For instance, in the Ploskii Stream and the Shumikha River the maximum tritium concentrations amount to 168 and 81 Bq l-1, respectively. The source of tritium in these surface waters is the last operating reactor at the MCC, which still uses the Yenisei water as coolant. In water and sediment samples of the Bolshaya Tel River (a tributary of the Yenisei River) the tritium content turned out to be at least 10 times higher than the background values for the Yenisei River. The measurements conducted at the RPA RADON (Moscow) revealed not only tritium but also the artificial radionuclide 14C in the Bolshaya Tel samples. The data obtained suggest that the Bolshaya Tel River receives the major part of tritium from sediments rather than from the water catchment area. This allows the conclusion that there is water exchange between the surface waters and the radioactively contaminated underground horizons of the "Severny" testing site. В© 2002 Elsevier Science Ltd. Аннотация: The study was done to investigate the content of manmade radionuclides in aquatic organisms of the Yenisei River near the Mining-and-Chemical Combine (MCC) and to estimate the exposure dose rates to organisms from various sources. The results of the investigation and calculations suggest that the main source of radioactive contamination of aquatic organisms is the coolant of the third MCC reactor, which is still being released into the Yenisei. Gamma-spectrometric analysis revealed 23 manmade radionuclides in the biomass of aquatic plants. The aquatic animal Phylolimnogammarus viridis and diatoms also contain manmade radionuclides. Among aquatic organisms, the highest dose rate is received by aquatic plants (up to 39 ?Gy/day). For most aquatic organisms under study, the dose received from the technogenic irradiation is an order of magnitude higher than the dose received from natural irradiation. The water moss (Fontinalis antipyretica) features the highest capacity to accumulate manmade radionuclides; hence, it accumulates the largest technogenic exposure dose among the study aquatic organisms.

Аннотация: In the lab experiments (2000-2003) the biomass of Elodea canadelis (water thyme) and Fontinalis antipyretica (water moss) plants was used. The plants were exposed in filtered Enisei water with radionuclide additive in the form of 241Am(NO3)3 solution. The activity (A) was measured with gamma-spectrometer ("Canberra", USA) with ultra-pure germanium detector. The main A release in aqueous medium is observed after long stabilization stage caused by the plant necrosis. Elodea plants in 127 days lost up to 65% of initial A, and moss biomass - 35% in 373 days.

Аннотация: During three field seasons (June-September) of 1997-99 contents of Na, K, Ca, Mg, Fe, Mn, Zn, Cu, Al, Cr, Ni, Cd, and Pb were determined in compartments of ecosystem (surrounding soils, bottom sediments, water, zoobenthos, macrophytes, and fish) of a fish and recreation pond situated at the edge of Krasnoyarsk City (Siberia, Russia). Contents of most parts of metals in soils, water, and macrophytes significantly correlated with each other. As concluded, their contents were determined by natural, general, geochemical peculiarities of the region. Heavy metals, contents of which were higher than federal upper limits of concentration, were revealed. In muscles of fish with different feeding spectra - crucian and perch - concentrations of some metals differed significantly; correlation graphs for metals also had different structures. Comparison of our data with those on diverse aquatic ecosystems of Siberia, Europe, North America, and China published in the last decade was carried out. It was concluded that a distribution of heavy metals in the compartments of an aquatic ecosystem presently have to be determined for each particular water body until general regularities are discovered.

Аннотация: The inhibition of bacterial luminescence has been used in testing industrial enterprises sewage. The toxicity of the sewage is less than the total toxicity of separate components due to neutralization of quinone products of polyphenol oxidation in the reactions with the other phenol components of sewage. Toxicity increase is due to their influence on the cell membrane. Studies of cell ultrastructure confirm this fact. The studied mechanism of the complex effect allowed a more accurate forecast of the ecological situation during the discharge of phenol compounds and metals. It also showed the necessity of taking into account the complex effect of sewage components on contaminant discharge into water reservoirs.

    Radioactive contamination of populated areas of the Krasnoyarsk krai in the region of location of the Mining-Chemical Combine [Text] / A. Y. Bolsunovskii [et al.] // Radiochemistry. - 1999. - Vol. 41, Is. 6. - P604-609. - Cited References: 6 . - 6. - ISSN 1066-3622

Аннотация: Radionuclide content in soil samples collected from populated areas of the Krasnoyarsk krai in the region of location of the Mining-Chemical Combine (MCC), RF Ministry of Nuclear Power Engineering (Minatom), Zheleznogorsk, is determined. The samples were analyzed in the State Sanitary Epidemiological Inspection Center of the Krasnoyarsk krai (Krasnoyarsk, Russia) and analytical and Radiochemical Laboratory (Spiez, Switzerland). In the soil samples collected from the areas that are not subject to the impact of MCC (due to contaminated water discharge and airborne effluents) the maximal content of the most radiologically significant technogenic radionuclide Cs-137 was found to be 45 Bq/kg, which does not exceed the global level: In flood land it amounts to 631 Bq/kg, and the absolutely maximal content (6507 Bq/kg) was found in the samples collected at a depth of 50-80 cm from the Gorodskoi Isl. near the Yeniseisk town. The Pu-239,Pu-240 content in top horizons of soil outside the MCC impact zone ranges from 0.2 to 0.6 Bq/kg. In the flood areas of populated localities at the Yenisei River the Pu-239,Pu-240 content increases to 3.2 Bq/kg in top horizons and more significantly in deeper horizons. The maximal Pu-239,Pu-240 content (8-10 and 10.6-28.9 Bq/kg determined by the Russian and Swiss Researchers, respectively) is found in the samples collected from Yeniseisk at a depth of 50-80 cm. These results suggest that Pu is supplied from MCC to the flood areas of populated localities with the river water. An increased Pu-239,Pu-240 content was also found in soil samples collected from the free-fall areas of the Atamanovo and Bol'shoi Balchug settlements located near the MCC sanitary zone.

Аннотация: Chromosome abnormalities in ana-telophase cells of apical root meristem of aquatic plant Elodea. canadensis (elodea), sampled in 2011-2012 in the Yenisei River at a site with background level of contamination and at several sites on the stretch contaminated with artificial radionuclides, and with chemical pollutants from municipal and industrial discharges of the Krasnoyarsk city. Lowest rate (5.2%) of cells with chromosome abnormalities was registered at sampling site with background level of contamination upstream of the Krasnoyarsk, highest rate of cells with abnormalities (39.7%)-in roots of elodea sampled in bottom sediments with highest concentration of Cs-137. Sum of rates of cells with abnormalities and rates of cells with all types of abnormalities positively correlated with total concentration of artificial and natural radionuclides, with concentration of artificial radionuclides and Cs-137 in bottom sediments of the Yenisei River (r (2) = 0.91-0.96, p < 0.0005 for sum of rates of cells with abnormalities; r (2) = 0.58-0.92, p < 0.05 for all types of abnormalities).

Аннотация: Following the Fukushima accident in March 2011, samples of pine trees (Pinus sylvestris) were collected from three sites near the city of Krasnoyarsk (Siberia, Russia) during 2011-2012 and analyzed for artificial radionuclides. Concentrations of Fukushima-derived radionuclides in the samples of pine needles in April 2011 reached 5.51 ± 0.52 Bq kg-1 131I, 0.92 ± 0.04 Bq kg-1 134Cs, and 1.51 ± 0.07 Bq kg-1 137Cs. An important finding was the detection of 134Cs from the Fukushima accident not only in the pine needles and branches but also in the new shoots in 2012, which suggested a transfer of Fukushima cesium isotopes from branches to shoots. In 2011 and 2012, the 137Cs/134Cs ratio for pine needles and branches collected in sampling areas Krasnoyarsk-1 and Krasnoyarsk-2 was greater than 1 (varying within a range of 1.2-2.6), suggesting the presence of “older“, pre-Fukushima accident 137Cs. Calculations showed that for pine samples growing in areas of the Krasnoyarskii Krai unaffected by contamination from the nuclear facility, the activity of the Fukushima-derived cesium isotopes was two-three times higher than the activity of the pre-accident 137Cs.

Аннотация: Cytogenetic studies on three species of submerged plants from different parts of the Yenisei River area subjected to radioactive impact of the Krasnoyarsk Mining-and-Chemical Plant and the Electrochemical Factory have been conducted. A high level of irregularities in ana-telophase and metaphase of mitoses has been revealed in test samples compared to the control: agglutination and fragmentation of chromosomes, lagging chromosomes, bridges, fragments, misdivisions, and others. The nature of the disorders indicates that they are related in part to the direct damage to the chromosome structure and in part to damage to the spindle.

Аннотация: The influence of several suites of pollutants (metallic salts, quinones, and phenols) on bacterial bioluminescence in vivo and in vitro (five test systems) was investigated. The sensitivity of bioluminescence to the different pollutants was evaluated, and inhibition constants were measured. The data obtained were shown to correlate with the physical and chemical characteristics of the substances and the structure of the bioluminescent systems. It has been found that three bioluminescent tests (water-soluble enzyme systems, immobilized enzyme systems, and bioluminescent bacteria) show higher sensitivity to pollutants and cover all types of widespread contamination. These tests were chosen as a set of bioluminescent assays for the detection of pollutants. (C) 1998 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

In muscles of fish with different feeding spectra-crucian and perch-concentrations of some metals differed significantly; correlation graphs for metals also had different structures.

Аннотация: Some high-activity hot particles (HP) were found in the flood plain of the Yenisei River, near the Krasnoyarsk Mining-and-Chemical Combine (MCC). and their radionuclide compositions were determined. The ratios of plutonium and caesium isotopes in the particles are indicative of their reactor origin. The Cs-137 activity of the particles amounts to 29,200 kBq/particle, which is higher than the corresponding activities of the fuel particles that formed as a result of the accident at the Chernobyl NPP, All the particles have been divided into two major groups according to the Cs-137/Cs-134 ratio: in the first group, the Cs-137/Cs-134 ratio is more than or equal to 3000, and in the second the Cs-137/Cs-134 ratio is less than or equal to 1000. The particles of the first and the second groups were preliminarily estimated to be formed 30 and 20 years ago, which suggests that there must have been at least two accidents at the MCC reactors, with part of the fuel released into the Yenisei River.
