Аннотация: Microparticles obtained by using 14C-labeled resorbable hydroxyaminobutyric acid polymer were injected into the caudal vein of laboratory animals without negative aftereffects for their growth and development and without changes in the macro- and microstructure of organs and tissues. The distribution of microparticles in the viscera and the dynamics of accumulation of carbon-containing polymer degradation products in the viscera were studied. The main targets for the particles are liver tissues, as well as renal and splenic tissues. The polymeric matrix of the microparticles is most actively destroyed in the spleen and liver. The presence of high-molecular- weight polymeric matrix in organs indicates the integrity of microparticles and the possibility of long-term (up to 12 weeks) functioning of polymeric particles in vivo. Аннотация: Tissue reaction to implantation of polymeric microparticles from resorbable polymer (polyhydroxybutyrate) is characterized by slight inflammatory reaction and pronounced progressive macrophage infiltration with the presence of mono-and multinuclear foreign body giant cells resorbing the polymeric matrix. No fibrous capsules were formed around the polymeric microparticles; neither necrosis nor other adverse morphological changes and tissue transformation in response to implantation of the PHB microparticles were recorded. The results indicate good prospects of using polyhydroxybutyrate for the construction of long-acting dosage forms as microparticles for intramuscular injection. Аннотация: Polyhydroxyalkanoate (PHA) sutures were implanted to test animals intramuscularly, and tissue reaction was investigated and compared with the reaction to silk and catgut. Tested monofilament sutures made of PHAs of two types polyhydroxybutyrate (PHB) and a copolymer of hydroxybutyrate and hydroxyvalerate (PHV) featured the strength necessary for the healing of muscle-fascial wounds. The reaction of tissues to polymeric implants was similar to their reaction to silk and was less pronounced than the reaction to catgut; it was expressed in a transient post-traumatic inflammation (up to four weeks) and the formation of a fibrous capsule less than 200 ?m thick, which became as thin as 4060 ?m after 16 weeks, in the course of reverse development. Macrophages and foreign-body giant cells with a high activity of acid phosphatase were actively involved in this process. PHB and PHB/PHV sutures implanted intramuscularly for an extended period (up to one year) did not cause any acute vascular reaction at the site of implantation or any adverse events, such as suppurative inflammation, necrosis, calcification of the fibrous capsule or malignant tumor formation. No statistically significant differences were revealed in the tissue response to polymer sutures of the two types. Capsules around silk and catgut sutures did not become significantly thinner.

Аннотация: Chronic experiments on mature Wistar rats studied the biological properties of suture threads from two types of polyoxyalkanoates (POA), such as polyoxybutyrate (POB) and the copolymer of POB and polyoxyvalerate (POV) (POB/POV) as compared to the conventional surgical material (silk and catgut). The physiological and biochemical parameters that reflect the status of the animals, including their behavior, height and development, the weight of the body and viscera, the morphology of peripheral blood, the biochemical parameters of blood, the activity of some enzymes, as well as histological findings of the viscera, and lymphoid tissue responses were assessed. POA was found to produce no negative effect on the physiological, biochemical, and functional characteristics of the animals irrespective of the duration of contact with the internal medium of the body and of the chemical composition of a material.

Аннотация: Specimens of 14C-labeled polymer of 3-hydroxybutyric acid, P(3-HB), with different initial molecular weights, were used to prepare microparticles, whose morphology was not influenced by the M w of the polymer. During the particle preparation process, P(3-HB) molecular weight decreased by 15-20%. Sterile microparticles (mean diameter 2.4 ?m) were injected into the tail veins of Wistar rats (5 mg/rat). The effects of the particles administered to rats were studied based on the general response of animals and local response of internal organ tissues and blood morphology; no adverse effects on growth and development of the animals or unfavorable changes in the structure of the tissues of internal organs were observed. Measurements of radioactivity in tissues showed that 14C concentrations are different in different organs, changing during the course of the experiment. The main targets for 14C-labeled microparticles were tissues of the liver, spleen, and kidneys. Comparison of radioactivity levels and residual contents of high-molecular-weight matrix in tissues suggested that the most rapid metabolism and degradation of P(3-HB) occurred in the liver and spleen. Gel-permeation chromatography showed that at 3 h after the microparticles were injected into the bloodstream, polymer degradation started in all examined organs, except the lungs; at 12 weeks, the M w of the polymer matrix was as low as 20-30% of its initial value. The presence of high-molecular-weight (undegraded) polymer in the tissues at 12 weeks after administration of the particles suggests that P(3-HB) is degraded in tissues of internal organs slowly and, hence, P(3-HB)-based microparticles can be used as sustained-release drug-delivery systems. Аннотация: Abstract: Fatty acid composition and content of 2 forms of sockeye salmon Oncorhynchus nerka from lakes in Kamchatka Peninsula (Russia) were compared. One form of sockeye salmon was anadromous ("marine"), that is, adult fish migrated in ocean to feed and grow and than return in the lake to breed. Fish of another form, kokanee, never migrate in the ocean. Per cent levels of the main indicators of nutritive value, eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA, 20:5n-3), and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA, 22:6n-3), were significantly higher in the landlocked O. nerka. However, concentrations of EPA and DHA per wet weight of filets were higher in the marine form, because of the relatively higher content of sum of fatty acids in their muscle tissue. As concluded, fish fed in marine environment had higher contents of long-chain n-3 fatty acids per wet weight than fish of the same species, fed in fresh waters. In general, both the anadromous sockeye salmon and the landlocked kokanee salmon can be recommended for human diet as a valuable product concerning contents of EPA and DHA. Аннотация: Seasonal dynamics of contents of essential polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA) in dominant groups of benthic invertebrates: gammarids (Gammaridae, Amphipoda), oligochaetes (Oligochaeta), chironomid larvae (Chironomidae, Diptera) and caddisfly larvae (Trichoptera), and dominant benthivorous fish, Siberian grayling Thymallus arcticus, have been studied in ecosystem of the large Siberian river. During the year of the study most benthic invertebrate taxa showed significant variations in the contents of both C-18 and long chain C-20-22 PUFAs. In contrast, the fish, which consumed the zoobenthos, had no significant seasonal variations in long chain PUFAs' contents. Thereby, the fish, as organisms of relatively higher evolution level than invertebrates, was supposed to have more strict metabolic control of long chain PUFAs' contents. Evidence was obtained that the studied fish species, grayling, may be capable to convert dietary EPA into DHA. В© 2006 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

    The influence of food concentration and "water of aggregation" on the reproductive parameters of Moina macrocopa (Crustacea: Cladocera) females / E. S. Zadereev, V. G. Gubanov, I. V. Egorov // Zhurnal Obshchei Biologii. - 1998. - Vol. 59, Is. 1. - С. 55-57 . - ISSN 0044-4596
Аннотация: Combined influence of "water of aggregation" and food concentration on the reproductive parameters of Moina macrocopa females was investigated. In all experiments the influence of population density was associated with the effect of "water of aggregation" prepared earlier by keeping dense population (200 ?g/ml) of M. macrocopa. It was shown that life-span of M. macrocopa females in "water of aggregation" was not dependent on food concentration; under conditions of all tested food concentration it was less than in case of control clean water. There was no difference in proportion of males produced in "water of aggregation" and in control though more males were born under conditions of higher food concentration. In general "water of aggregation" causes a specific acceleration of female life history: the life-span and the period between clutches decrease, the amount of neonates in last clutches increases while the chance of male production at the beginning of reproduction period becames greater. The "water of aggregation" could also causes the formation of ephipial eggs instead of the first partenogenetic clutch. It seems that life strategy under conditions of very high mortality associated with "water of aggregation" is aimed to maximum realization of individual capacities in short period of time.

Аннотация: We studied the possibility of evaluation of the intensity of pathological oxidative processes in rat liver using an integral bioluminescent test with controlled perfusion of the isolated organ. The test revealed a significant correlation between the level of TBA-reactive products and bioluminescence intensity.

Аннотация: Various chronic inflammatory and necrotic processes in the liver parenchyma are accompanied by pathological morphofunctional changes, which are associated with hepatocyte death and hyperplasia of the connective tissue. Regeneration of the liver parenchyma should include not only prevention of fibrosis, but also stimulation of hepatocyte prolifearation. The adrenoceptor agonist dobutamine stimulated proliferative activity of cultured hepatocytes and prevented the development of postintoxication liver cirrhosis in mice produced by chronic poisoning with CCl4.
