    Transfer of americium-241 from food and water to organs and tissues of the crucian carp * / T. Zotina [et al.] // Radioprotection. - 2011. - Vol. 46, Is. 6 SUPPL. - S69-S73, DOI 10.1051/radiopro/20116648s . - ISSN 0033-8451
Аннотация: The transfer of transuranium element americium-241 (241Am) from food and water to organs and tissues of freshwater fish (Carassius auratus gibelio, crucian carp) has been investigated in laboratory experiments. The fishes were fed with homogenized biomass of submerged macrophytes labeled with 241Am, through catheter. For the first two days after force-feeding, fishes excreted up to 80% of ingested americium, for four days - 98%. 241Am was registered in internal organs and tissues that had no direct contact with americium (liver, bones, muscles) as early as two days after the feeding and after eight days, when the digestive tract was depurated. Among internal organs, the highest activity concentration was recorded in the liver (up to 427 Bq/kg). Activity concentration in bones (19-31 Bq/kg) was several times higher than in muscles, indicating the affinity of americium to bone tissue. Assimilation of 241Am in organs and tissues of crucian carp from water occurred mainly via the digestive tract too. В© 2011 EDP Sciences.

Аннотация: Three canned fish species - Pacific saury (Cololabis saira), Pacific herring (Clupea harengus) and Baltic sprat (Sprattus sprattus) - most common and popular in Russia, were analyzed for fatty acids. Special attention was paid to long-chain essential polyunsaturated fatty acids: eicosapentaenoic acid (20:5?3) and docosahexaenoic acid (22:6?3). Sums of eicosapentaenoic acid and docosahexaenoic acid in saury, herring and sprat were, on average, 2.42, 1.80 and 1.43 g/100 g product, respectively. Contents of these essential acids in all the canned fish species were found to be very high compared with many other fish reported in the available literature. All the canned fish appeared to be highly valuable products for human nutrition concerning the content of eicosapentaenoic and docosahexaenoic acids.

Аннотация: Contents of fatty acids in filets of unfrozen (control), boiled, fried, roasted and boiled in a small amount of water humpback salmon, collected from a wholesale market in Krasnoyarsk city (Siberia, Russia) were analyzed. Special attention was paid to essential polyunsaturated fatty acids of ?3 family: eicosapentaenoic, 20:5?3 (EPA) and docosahexaenoic, 22:6?3 (DHA). Heat treatment in general did not decrease content of EPA and DHA in humpback, except a modest reduction during frying. Cooked humpback appeared to be the valuable source of essential ?3 PUFAs, namely EPA and DHA. It was hypothesized that the absence of significant reduction of PUFAs' contents in red flesh of fishes of Salmonidae family during heat treatment may be due to a high level of natural antioxidants which formed in the course of evolution as adaptation to their ecological niche. Аннотация: In 2002, a "top-down" biomanipulation (reduction of biomass of planktivorous fish Carassius auratus) had been successfully carried out in a small reservoir of the river Bugach (Krasnoyarsk, Russia), after which the cyanobacterial blooming ceased. However, the reservoir ecosystem was absolutely free of Daphnia - the main link of trophic cascade. As supposed, the reduction of blooming was the result of suppression of a direct stimulation effect of planktivorous fish on cyanobacteria, revealed earlier in laboratory experiments. The question arose as to whether the effect of stimulation of cyanobacteria revealed in laboratory may lead to the changes in biomass of cyanobacteria in the reservoir, observed after the biomanipulation. To test this supposition, a mathematical model describing growth of cyanobacteria in the reservoir was developed. The modelling results and field data on biomass of cyanobacteria in summer closely coincided. Modelling calculations showed that direct influence of planktivorous fish could cause the second summer peak of water blooming by Microcystis. On the contrary, removal of crucian carp from the reservoir will not affect the level of water blooming caused by cyanobacteria Anabaena, as this species' growth is not stimulated by fish. Аннотация: During three field seasons (June-September) of 1997-99 contents of Na, K, Ca, Mg, Fe, Mn, Zn, Cu, Al, Cr, Ni, Cd, and Pb were determined in compartments of ecosystem (surrounding soils, bottom sediments, water, zoobenthos, macrophytes, and fish) of a fish and recreation pond situated at the edge of Krasnoyarsk City (Siberia, Russia). Contents of most parts of metals in soils, water, and macrophytes significantly correlated with each other. As concluded, their contents were determined by natural, general, geochemical peculiarities of the region. Heavy metals, contents of which were higher than federal upper limits of concentration, were revealed. In muscles of fish with different feeding spectra - crucian and perch - concentrations of some metals differed significantly; correlation graphs for metals also had different structures. Comparison of our data with those on diverse aquatic ecosystems of Siberia, Europe, North America, and China published in the last decade was carried out. It was concluded that a distribution of heavy metals in the compartments of an aquatic ecosystem presently have to be determined for each particular water body until general regularities are discovered.

Аннотация: Polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA) of ?3 family are of crucial physiological importance for the most animals and they are an essential and deficient component of human nutrition. These compounds are most effectively synthesized by some groups of algae, hence, aquatic ecosystems are considered to be the main source of these PUFA for human nutrition. Factors controlling the content and distribution of ?3 PUFA in freshwater organisms of basic trophic levels and determined PUFA final production in freshwater ecosystems are considered in the review. PUFA biosynthesis is known to be tightly related to basic fatty acid metabolic pathways. Hence, fatty composition and the PUFA content of major freshwater hydrobiont groups, including bacteria, algae, invertebrates and vertebrates, and environmental and population age effects are described. The peculiarities of PUFA transfer between organisms of various trophic levels are discussed. The essential ?3 PUFA is one of the important parameter of food quality of aquatic consumers and they can determine the rate of energy and matter transfer between producers and primary consumers and, as a result, in a whole freshwater food chain. Analysis of PUFA content and its regulation in biomass of various fish populations indicates that freshwater ecosystems are of the same value in respect of PUFA sources as marine ecosystems. Despite the great practical importance, the studies focused on production and whole pools of ?3 PUFA in different freshwater ecosystems are still scarce and need to be continued.

Characidiopsis ellipsoidea -- g. Colacium -- Cyclops vicinus -- Daphnia longispina -- eutrophic reservoir -- phototrophic epibionts
Аннотация: Seasonality of burden and prevalence of phototrophic (microalgal) epibionts Characidiopsis ellipsoidea, Colacium vesiculosum and Colacium sp. on dominating crustacean zooplankton (Daphnia longispina, Cyclops vicinus and Mesocyclops leuckarti) were studied in a small reservoir Bugach with cyanobacterial bloom. The correlations between the seasonal dynamics of prevalence and the dynamics of others biotic and abiotic factors were calculated. The conclusions were as follows. The substrate species, that determined the development of the epibionts on the three studied crustacean zooplankton, was Daphnia longispina (Cladocera). Despite intensive epibiotic infestation of crustacean zooplankton, epibionts did not appear to have caused non-consumptive mortality of the crustacean zooplankton. But they could have contributed to the Daphnia summer decline by increasing mortality due to its consumption by planktivorous fishes. The phototropic epibionts may successfully coexist with cyanobacterial bloom. The possible role of the epibionts in changing nutrient fluxes in pelagic food web is discussed.

Fatty acids -- Piscivorous and omnivorous fish -- Season -- Stable isotopes -- Trophic level
Аннотация: Two groups of factors, phylogenetic and ecological, are presently regarded as controlling fatty acid composition of fish, including essential eicosapentaenoic (EPA) and docosahexaenoic (DHA) acids. Environmental effects, e.g., trophic position, temperature and/or seasonality, were previously studied using sums of fatty acids or only their level data. We tested the hypothesis that differences in trophic levels of piscivorous (pike and perch) and omnivorous (roach and bream) fish from a mesotrophic reservoir allow discriminating levels and contents of individual fatty acids, especially EPA and DHA. The more established measurements, i.e., stomach contents and carbon and nitrogen stable isotopes in fish muscles, were also carried out to provide linkages between the different ecological tracers, fatty acids versus stable isotopes, and matching the methods for long-term food sources (fatty acids and stable isotopes) and recent foraging (stomach content analysis). We also studied a putative influence of seasonality. Similar to other studies, there were seasonal changes in fatty acid composition and contents of two fish, perch and roach, due to direct and indirect effects of water temperature. Meanwhile, the piscivorous and omnivorous species captured in the same month, were explicitly differentiated on a base of stable isotopes and fatty acids. Significantly higher percentages and contents of DHA in piscivorous fish, perch and pike, relatively to those in roach and bream, likely indicated a higher trophic transfer efficiency for this essential fatty acid. All the fishes have commercial importance for regional fishery and are harvested from the studied reservoir for human nutrition. Regarding content of EPA + DHA (mg g?1 fish) as the indicator of nutritive value for humans, pike had the highest nutritive value, roach and perch had intermediate overlapped values, and bream was of the least benefit. © 2016 Elsevier B.V.

Аннотация: A critical analysis of literature data on the distribution, morphology, and phylogeography of the Arctic lamprey (Lethenteron camtschaticum) and five species of marine and anadromous fish such as navaga (Eleginus navaga), pollock (Theragra chalcogramma), rainbow smelt (Osmerus mordax dentex), Pacific herring (Clupea pallasii), and pond smelt (Hypomesus olidus) has been performed. The results show that all these species have colonized Northern European seas, distributing along the Arctic coastline of Eurasia after the glacier retreat. The reasons that the dispersal of these species in the Atlantic Ocean may be impeded (preference for a cold environment, competition, and decrease of the evolutionary potential) are discussed.

Аннотация: We have analyzed the partial sequences of the mitochondrial COI gene along with the amino acid sequences of cytochrome oxidase subunit I, encoded by this gene region, in representatives of 11 genera of salmonoid fish. For amino acid sequences, two alternative networks are constructed with outgroups represented by either Esocoidei or Osmeroidei as the supposed ancestral groups. This way, Osmeroidei appear to be closer to the salmonoid fish than Esocoidei, and their presence in the network as an outgroup explains the available data on the morphology and karyology of salmonoids much better. A number of the results of this study are fundamentally new. In particular, the slowing down of the molecular evolution of the grayling (Thymallidae) is shown. We conclude that the charr (Salvelinus) is one of the modern genera of salmonoids closest to their ancestor. The hypothesis of the phylogenetic proximity of the genera Brachymystax, Hucho, and Salmo has been confirmed. We also discuss the possibility that it is namely the changes in the amino acid sequence of cytochrome oxidase subunit I that lead to postzygotic reproductive isolation between taxa.

salmonid fishes of families Coregonidae and Salmonidae -- polyunsaturated -- fatty acids -- eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) -- docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) -- embryogenesis
Аннотация: A hypothesis was advanced and grounded that the total content of eicosapentaenoic (EPA, 20:5n-3) and docosahexaenoic (DHA, 22:6n-3) acids in fish muscle tissue is associated with the species-specific (taxon-specific) duration of embryo development. A meta-analysis of the original and published data was performed using fishes of the families Coregonidae and Salmonidae as an example. Fishes with longer embryo development times, which are observed at lower temperatures, were found to have significantly higher EPA + DHA contents in muscles as compared with the species that belong to the same families but have shorter embryo development times. This association was explained by the fact that an embryo forms more cells per unit tissue volume at lower temperatures, which requires a greater specific amount of cell membranes and, therefore, greater amounts of EPA and DHA to produce them.

Аннотация: As studies have shown, individuals from well morphologically distinct groups often represent the same species and may even belong to one population in fishes and lampreys from environments with unstable abiotic factors (Arctic, mountain, and desert regions). Phenotypic plasticity ensures broad variation ranges of morphological traits in unstable conditions, which require rapid transitions from one morphogenetic variant to another. The choice of a morphogenetic pathway can be influenced by the level of individual heterozygosity, changes in the copy numbers of certain DNA sequences, heteroplasmy, and the presence of several allelic variants in the genes that strongly affect the phenotype. A cyclic character is often observed for evolutionary processes driven by these mechanisms, and speciation usually does not take place in unstable environmental conditions. However, mobilization reserve accumulate in a species with a broad reaction norm, and particular morphogenetic pathways may be genetically fixed when its population finds its way into stable environmental conditions, facilitating fast allopatric speciation.

Seasonal formation of annual rings on the scales of Baikal grayling inhabiting the middle reaches of the Yenisei River under altered temperature regime / I. V. Zuev, P. Y. Andrushchenko, T. A. Аннотация: The seasonal formation of annual rings on the scales of Baikal grayling from the middle reaches of the Yenisei River has been studied to find out the reasons for the high growth rate of the grayling under altered temperature regime downstream of the dam of the Krasnoyarsk Hydroelectric Plant. The number of circuli outside the last identified annuli and in the second, third, and fourth completed annuli was estimated on 569 fish caught during the annual cycle. The von Bertalanffy growth function was used to describe the increment in the number of circuli over a year. The calculation showed that a new annual ring was produced in July. In November, there was no statistically significant difference between the circulus number in scale increment and the circulus number in the corresponding completed annuli of older fish. Thus, despite the increased duration of the period with optimal water temperatures downstream of the dam of the Krasnoyarsk Hydroelectric Plant, fish growth was observed in a limited period of the year, from July to November. The probable reason for the high growth rate of grayling in the study area is that the fish do not have to waste energy on seasonal migration to the tributaries. Taking into account that grayling biomass production in the middle Yenisei occurs from July to November, we can recommend shifting the dates of commercial fishing for grayling to the end of this period—November–December. © 2021, The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer Nature B.V.
