Аннотация: Microparticles obtained by using 14C-labeled resorbable hydroxyaminobutyric acid polymer were injected into the caudal vein of laboratory animals without negative aftereffects for their growth and development and without changes in the macro- and microstructure of organs and tissues. The distribution of microparticles in the viscera and the dynamics of accumulation of carbon-containing polymer degradation products in the viscera were studied. The main targets for the particles are liver tissues, as well as renal and splenic tissues. The polymeric matrix of the microparticles is most actively destroyed in the spleen and liver. The presence of high-molecular- weight polymeric matrix in organs indicates the integrity of microparticles and the possibility of long-term (up to 12 weeks) functioning of polymeric particles in vivo. Аннотация: The possibility of use of polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHAs), biodegradable microbial polyesters, as a carrier for pesticides (?-hexachlorcyclohexane and lindane) for targeted and controlled delivery of these compounds to soil was investigated. The kinetics of polymer degradation and the dynamics of pesticide release from the extended-release formulations was studied. It is shown that pesticides embedded in a degradable polymer (PHA) carrier are released gradually and slowly, without surges, as the polymer is degraded by the soil micro-flora. The microbial soil component actively responded to the addition of the polymer as an additional nutrient substrate: the latter was degraded and then utilized. The rate of the pesticide release to the soil can be regulated by varying the polymer-pesticide ratio. В© 2009 Pleiades Publishing, Ltd.

Аннотация: The kinetics of polyhydroxyalkanoate (PHA) degradation in natural environment in two water reservoirs having various ecological characteristics was studied. It was shown that biodegradation of polymer essentially depends on the environment temperature and inorganic composition of water. Аннотация: Kinetic parameters of a culture of the hydrogen-oxidizing bacterium Ralstonia eutropha, grown on a gas substrate under the conditions favoring autotrophic biosynthesis of polyhydroxybutyrate, were studied. The following parameters, making it possible to control and optimize the process in industrial situations, were determined: specific rate of substrate consumption, physical properties of culture medium, and coefficients of heat emission and mass transfer.

Аннотация: Mathematical model is constructed for studying the effect of photosynthesis stimulation in cyanobacteria after their passing through crucian intestines on cyanobacteria biomass changes after bio-manipulations. At good agreement of model and natural data an explanation is found for observed differences in the influence of planktivorous fish on the two species of cyanobacteria. The calculations showed that one of the reasons for appearance of the peak of water blooming with a species Microcystic may be direct metabolic influence of planktivorous fish. Elimination of crucian from the pond will not affect the level of water blooming with Anabaena species.

Аннотация: We examined the dynamics of the vertical stratification of physical, chemical and biological factors in a brackish meromictic lake with a deep-water chlorophyll maximum (Shira Lake, Russia, Khakasia) during the growing season and estimated how the vertical distribution of these factors influences the vertical distribution of the zooplankton community. The vertical distribution of zooplankton was restricted by the anoxic hypolimnion. Nauplii and younger copepodides (C1-C3) of the copepod, Arctodiaptomus salinus, and the rotifer, Brachionus plicatilis, were found in the upper warm waters. During summer stratification the maximum of A. salinus biomass, which consisted mainly of older copepodides (C4-C5) and females, was associated with the deep-water maximum of biomass of green algae, which are the preferred diet for this species. The vertical distribution of the rotifer Hexarthra oxiuris was bimodal with numerical peaks in the epi- and hypolimnion. Reproduction peaks of dominant species were separated in time. The reproduction peak of A. salinus was at the beginning of summer when A. salinus constituted up to 99% of total zooplankton biomass. The development of rotifers was detected after the reproduction peak of A. salinus when the biomass of rotifers reached 50% of total zooplankton biomass. В© 2007 Springer Science+Business Media B.V.

Аннотация: The review deals with objective reasons that limit the use of chlorophyll fluorescence induction kinetics (Chl FIK) method in plant ecology. Based on the ontogenetic approach (analysis and comparison of the dynamics of the Chl fluorescence ratio Fp/Fs and physiological characteristics of plant leaves in ontogeny) possible criteria for the estimation of general plant resistance of photosynthetic apparatus (PSA) to prolonged stress affects are proposed. One of these criteria is the presence or absence of a steady-state phase in the dynamics of Chl fluorescence ratio Fp/Fs (or Rfd) of plant leaves after they stop growing. We also propose to use the duration of the steady-state phase and variability of Chl fluorescence ratios Rfd and Fp/Fs in this period for quantitative assessment of plant PSA resistance to prolonged stress during plant leaf ontogeny.

Аннотация: We studied soil-like substrate (SLS) as a potential candidate for plant cultivation in bioregenerative life support systems (BLSS). The SLS was obtained by successive conversion of wheat straw by oyster mushrooms and worms. Mature SLS contained 9.5% humic acids and 4.9% fulvic acids. First, it was shown that wheat, bean and cucumber yields as well as radish yields when cultivated on mature SLS were comparable to yields obtained on a neutral substrate (expanded clay aggregate) under hydroponics. Second, the possibility of increasing wheat and radish yields on the SLS was assessed at three levels of light intensity: 690, 920 and 1150 ?mol m-2 s-1 of photosynthetically active radiation (PAR). The highest wheat yield was obtained at 920 ?mol m-2 s-1, while radish yield increased steadily with increasing light intensity. Third, long-term SLS fertility was tested in a BLSS model with mineral and organic matter recycling. Eight cycles of wheat and 13 cycles of radish cultivation were carried out on the SLS in the experimental system. Correlation coefficients between SLS nitrogen content and total wheat biomass and grain yield were 0.92 and 0.97, respectively, and correlation coefficients between nitrogen content and total radish biomass and edible root yield were 0.88 and 0.87, respectively. Changes in hormone content (auxins, gibberellins, cytokinins and abscisic acid) in the SLS during matter recycling did not reduce plant productivity. Quantitative and species compositions of the SLS and irrigation water microflora were also investigated. Microbial community analysis of the SLS showed bacteria from Bacillus, Pseudomonas, Proteus, Nocardia, Mycobacterium, Arthrobacter and Enterobacter genera, and fungi from Trichoderma, Penicillium, Fusarium, Aspergillus, Mucor, Botrytis, and Cladosporium genera. Аннотация: Stability of LSS based on biological regeneration of water, air and food subject to damaging factors is largely dependent on the behavior of the photosynthesizing component represented, mainly, by higher plants. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the tolerance of uneven-aged wheat and radish cenoses to temperature effects different in time and value. Estimation of thermal tolerance of plants demonstrated that exposure for 20 h to the temperature increasing to 45В°C brought about irreversible damage both in photosynthetic processes (up to 80% of initial value) and the processes of growth and development. Kinetics of visible photosynthesis during exposure to elevated temperatures can be used to evaluate critical exposure time within the range of which the damage of metabolic processes is reversible. With varying light intensity and air temperature it is possible to find a time period admissible for the plants to stay under adverse conditions without considerable damage of metabolic processes. Аннотация: Using experimental microecosystems the kinetics of phenol disappearance in small forest pond waters (Siberia, Russia) in the summer of 1995-96 were investigated. Despite of high variability of components of the ecosystem (plankton biomass and species composition) and two pronounced 'blooms' of green algae Volvox aureus the same kinetics of the disappearance took place over the investigated period. Half-lives of the pollutant depended on water temperature only. A comparison of the self-purification of the pond with that of the Krasnoyarsk reservoir, 'blooming' with blue-greens was carried out. Half-lives in the pond were significantly lower than that in the reservoir. During the periods of 'blooms' of the green algae in the pond the concentrations of inorganic nutrients were comparatively high and the phenol-degrading bacteria likely were not limited by these nutrients, in contrast to the periods of 'bloom' of the blue-green algae in the reservoir.

Аннотация: The luminescence of obelin is initiated by NaOCl in a reaction mixture containing no calcium. The addition of Mn2+ enhances the light emission > 300-fold. Sodium azide and histidine, as singlet oxygen quenchers, inhibit NaOCl-activated obelin luminescence in the presence or absence of Mn2+. This suggests that the addition of NaOCl to the mixture causes singlet oxygen formation (stimulated by Mn2+ ions), and singlet oxygen initiates the light-emitting reaction.

Аннотация: The examination of four species of luminous bacteria Photobacterium leiognathi, Photobacterium phosphoreum, Vibrio fischeri and Vibrio harveyi has enabled us to reveal some nutrient medium components effecting growth, luminescence intensity and luciferase synthesis. These agents are nucleic components (nucleotides, nucleotides and amine bases), amino acids and vitamins, which are part of hydrolysates from the biomass of various lithotrophic microorganisms, hydrogen-oxidizing, iron-oxidizing and carboxydobacteria. The effect of promoting agents essentially alters the physiological state and ultrastructure of the cells of luminous bacteria and increases luciferase biosynthesis two- to three-fold compared to a control.

Аннотация: Procedure for microencapsulation providing stable formation of high quality microspheres was designed. Conditions for deposition of the anthracycline antibiotic daunorubicin to polymer matrix were developed and microsheres loaded with various quantities of the drug were prepared. The kinetics of the in vitro and in vivo release of daunorubicin from the microsheres was studied. The rate of the rubomycin release to the medium in vitro (balanced phosphate buffer at 37.8В°C) in a 300-hour experiment directly depended on the quantity of the incorporated drug and averaged 0.81 В· 10 -4 to 2.3 В· 10 -4 mcg/mlВ·h. The experiment on laboratory animals with intraperitoneal administration of the rubomycin microsperes showed that the drug remained in the blood and abdominal liquid for a long time (up to 10 days). Possible control of the quantity of the rubomycin encapsulation to the polymer matrix, no sharp efflux of the drug at the early stages of the observation and low rate of the drug release to the medium allowed to conclude that the use of the biodegradable polymer microsperes as carriers of the high toxic antibiotic providing its prolonged action was prospective.

Аннотация: A procedure for preparation of microspheres from biodegradable linear polyether of microbiological origin (polyhydroxybutirate, PHB) with using the technology of solvent evaporation was developed considering a specific example of two- and three-component emulsions. The procedure provided permanent preparation of the microspheres of high quality. The influence of the procedure (emulsion type, dispersion process and medium temperature) on the yield of the microspheres, their structure and size was shown. The temperature had a significant impact on incorporation of the antitumor anthracycline antibiotic daunorubicin (rubomycin) to the polymer matrix. The microspheres with various levels of the drug load (29 and 90% of the initial content in the emulsion) were prepared and the kinetics of the in vitro rubomycin release was studied. The dynamics of the highly toxic rubomycin release from the microspheres was on the whole even with the curve profile reaching the plateau in 20-22 hours of the observation period. The rate of the rubomycin release to the medium depended on the value of the antibiotic incorporation and was maximum within the first two hours (3.3 and 13.0 mcg/mlВ·h) that corresponded to the release of 0.97 and 3.89 of the incorporated antibiotic. The average rate of rubomycin release during 300 hours was 0.81В·10-4 and 2.3В·10-4 mcg/mlВ·h. The release constituted respectively 3.9 and 13.11% of the antibiotic incorporated to the microspheres.

Аннотация: The effect of the preparation technique (chemical composition of a polymer, type and method of emulsion mixing, and molecular mass of a drug) on the yield, structure, and size of microparticles obtained from resorbable polyesters of microbiological origin, polyhydroxyalkanoates, is studied. It is found that the concentration of the polymer solution and the method of emulsion mixing are the most significant factors affecting the diameter of microparticles based on polyhydroxyalkanoates; the surface structure of particles depends to a higher extent on the chemical composition of the polymer. The family of microparticles from 100-200 nm to 50-70 mu m in diameter is synthesized. It is shown that the rate of drug release from microparticles in vitro into the medium is higher in the case of 3-hydroxybutyrate copolymers with 3-hydroxyvalerate than in the case of the homopolymer of 3-hydroxybutyrate. This parameter increases with the content of 3-hydroxyvalerate units in the copolymer and the porosity and mass fraction of the drug in particles with a decrease in their sizes. For in vitro systems containing a phosphate buffer, variation in the preparation parameters makes it possible to obtain microparticles with various characteristics suitable for deposition of drugs. For microparticles obtained from polyhydroxyalkanoates and having different diameters, the mathematical description of the kinetics of drug release from the polymer matrix is provided.
