Аннотация: Sustainability is one of the most important criteria and evaluation of human life support systems intended for use during long space flights. The common feature of biological and physicochemical life support systems is that basically they are both catalytic. But there are two fundamental properties distinguishing biological systems: 1) they are auto-catalytic: their catalysts - enzymes of protein nature - are continuously reproduced when the system functions; 2) the program of every process performed by enzymes and the program of their reproduction are inherent in the biological system itself - in the totality of genomes of the species involved in the functioning of the ecosystem. Actually, one cell with the genome capable of the phenotypic realization is enough for the self-restoration of the function performed by the cells of this species in the ecosystem. The continuous microalgal culture of Chlorella vulgaris was taken to investigate quantitatively the process of self-restoration in unicellular algae population. Based on the data obtained, we proposed a mathematical model of the restoration process in a cell population that has suffered an acute radiation damage. В© 2003 COSPAR. Аннотация: Batch cultures and continuous flow cultures were used to study the growth rates of zooplankton species from Shira lake, the rotifer Brachionus plicatilis Muller and calanoid copepod Arctodiaptomus salinus Daday, which were fed on phytoplankton and bacterioplankton from the lake. Analyses of the birth and survival rates were used to demonstrate that the lake phytoplankton, consisting mostly of cyanobacteria and diatomaceous algae, is inadequotes for optimal realisation of the reproductive potential of B. plicatilis when compared with the bacterial diet. The study revealed that the kinetic growth characteristics of the two zooplankters were similar: B. plicatilis rmax, 0.120 d-1; S0, 0.253; and Ks, 0.114 mg dry mass l-1; and for A. salinus rmax, 0.129 d-1; S0, 0.240; and Ks, 0.171 mg dry mass l-1. Fluctuations in natural food concentration reduced the growth rate of both species. Even though the threshold concentration of food for B. plicatilis and A. salinus were quite similar, the copepods were less sensitive to food limitation.

Аннотация: Seasonal dynamics of Anabaena flos-aquae (Lyngb.) Breb., including vegetative cells, akinetes and akinete envelopes, in bottom sediments and water column at both littoral and deeper central stations of a small Siberian reservoir was studied. Two types of akinetes were observed: in the first half of summer Anabaena formed akinetes, which served for vegetative reproduction and germinated in water column soon after differentiation, while in the second half of summer the akinetes produced served as a resting stages, which were deposited to bottom sediments. Canonical correlation analyses revealed that decrease of water temperature was the main environmental factor that stimulated the akinete formation. In contrast to the general opinion, concentration of inorganic phosphorus slightly, but positively influenced the akinete formation. Thus, akinetes formed in response to the temperature decrease, needs a certain level of this nutrient. At littoral and open-water stations abundance and seasonal dynamics of akinetes in water column and their sinking pattern were very similar. However, seasonal dynamics of abundance of akinetes in sediments in these two reservoir locations differed: whereas the abundance of akinetes in open water increased permanently during the summer, that in the littoral decreased soon after their sedimentation. The cause for decrease in abundance of akinetes in bottom sediments in winter is unknown. В© Springer 2006.

Аннотация: An individual-based model of cyclic development of Cladocera populations was developed on the basis of experimental data. The model takes into account the following processes describing the development of an individual animal: maturation, transition into other reproductive classes, selection of the reproduction mode (parthenogenetic or gamogenetic), release of parthenogenetic progeny and death. The model assumes that switching from asexual to sexual reproduction is controlled by the concentration of food and metabolic by-products of the animal population. Verification of the model by independent experiments demonstrated that (1) during population growth, metabolic by-products build up in the medium, and (2) the effect of metabolic by-products on gamogenesis induction depends on concentration. The hypothesis that the effect of regulating reproductive switching factors should synchronise the development of population with the change of environmental conditions in order to ensure production of the maximum number of diapausing eggs was tested. It is shown that combination of regulating reproductive switching factors maximises the production of diapausing eggs. В© 2002 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.

Аннотация: Three levels of chemical communications involved plankton Crustacea are considered: 1) Influence of zooplankton excretion on phytoplankton; 2) Influence of zooplankton excretion on the individuals of the same or other species of the same trophic level; 3) Influence of chemical cues released by predatory zooplankton and fish on herbivorous zooplankton. The data on the influence of excreted cues on some physiological (growth, reproduction, feeding, etc.) and behavioural (vertical and horizontal migrations) characters of planktonic crustaceans are presented. Ecological role and chemistry cues responsible for the interactions of different trophic levels can be different. It is considered that chemical communications in aquatic ecosystems can be provided with: 1) Species-specific cues that strictly influence particular biological functions (communication system of feromone type); 2) Non-specific cues that strictly influence particular functions (system of regulator, that act at the whole ecosystem as the hormonal system of an organism). 3) Non-specific substances with broad (non-specidic) influence - toxic substances of "biocondition substances" according to classification of Novikov and Kharlamova (2000).

    The influence of food concentration and "water of aggregation" on the reproductive parameters of Moina macrocopa (Crustacea: Cladocera) females / E. S. Zadereev, V. G. Gubanov, I. V. Egorov // Zhurnal Obshchei Biologii. - 1998. - Vol. 59, Is. 1. - С. 55-57 . - ISSN 0044-4596
Аннотация: Combined influence of "water of aggregation" and food concentration on the reproductive parameters of Moina macrocopa females was investigated. In all experiments the influence of population density was associated with the effect of "water of aggregation" prepared earlier by keeping dense population (200 ?g/ml) of M. macrocopa. It was shown that life-span of M. macrocopa females in "water of aggregation" was not dependent on food concentration; under conditions of all tested food concentration it was less than in case of control clean water. There was no difference in proportion of males produced in "water of aggregation" and in control though more males were born under conditions of higher food concentration. In general "water of aggregation" causes a specific acceleration of female life history: the life-span and the period between clutches decrease, the amount of neonates in last clutches increases while the chance of male production at the beginning of reproduction period becames greater. The "water of aggregation" could also causes the formation of ephipial eggs instead of the first partenogenetic clutch. It seems that life strategy under conditions of very high mortality associated with "water of aggregation" is aimed to maximum realization of individual capacities in short period of time.

    The role of population density in gamogenesis induction in moina macrocopa (Cladocera: Crustaceae) / E. S. Zadereev, V. G. Gubanov // Zhurnal Obshchei Biologii. - 1996. - Vol. 57, Is. 3. - С. 366-367 . - ISSN 0044-4596
Аннотация: Combined influence of population density, temperature and photoperiod on the gamogenesis of individual females of M. macrocopa was investigated. In all experiments the influence of population density was associated with the direct effect of "swarm water". The photoperiod in its broad natural range also influences gamogenesis induction. The increase in temperature above optimum but lower than lethal level sharply decreases the efficiency of gamogenesis. In this case stimulation of gamogenesis is possible by combined effect of poor feeding and high population density. If temperature and photoperiod are optimum for partenogenetic population the change of reproduction mode in lowdensity population of M. macrocopa is determined by poor feeding while in high-density populations density itself is more important. However the increase in food concentration descreases the efficiency of "swarm water" on the gamogenesis induction. According to the hypothesis of nondirect influence of population density an individual decreases its filtarion rate (and starves) under "swarm water" condition.

Аннотация: The ability to change the reproduction mode and produce diapausing eggs, which is prevalent in many zooplankton species, significantly impacts on the evolution and ecology of aquatic communities. The production of diapausing eggs is controlled by multiple effects of biotic and abiotic factors, including infochemicals. We have investigated the effects of chemicals exuded by conspecifics and ecologically close competing congers, Moina brachiata and M. macrocopa, which coexist in the same water body, and by larger Cladocera species (Daphnia magna) on the change of reproduction mode, specific growth rate and fecundity of M. brachiata and M. macrocopa females. The production of gametogenetic eggs in both species was detected only in waters from crowded cultures of conspecifics. The water from crowded cultures of conspecifics reduced the specific growth rate of the juvenile females of both species that later switched to gametogenesis. While it either did not affect (in M. macrocopa) or even increase (in M. brachiata) the specific growth rate of the juvenile females that later reproduced by parthenogenesis. Females of M. macrocopa released significantly fewer neonates in the water from crowded cultures of conspecifics than in all other treatments, while the fecundity of M. brachiata females was the same in all treatments. To understand the phenomenon of diapause induction under the effect of chemical cues in zooplankton, a link between laboratory tests and ecological research should be established, and the chemical composition of the signals should be determined. Аннотация: We examined the dynamics of the vertical stratification of physical, chemical and biological factors in a brackish meromictic lake with a deep-water chlorophyll maximum (Shira Lake, Russia, Khakasia) during the growing season and estimated how the vertical distribution of these factors influences the vertical distribution of the zooplankton community. The vertical distribution of zooplankton was restricted by the anoxic hypolimnion. Nauplii and younger copepodides (C1-C3) of the copepod, Arctodiaptomus salinus, and the rotifer, Brachionus plicatilis, were found in the upper warm waters. During summer stratification the maximum of A. salinus biomass, which consisted mainly of older copepodides (C4-C5) and females, was associated with the deep-water maximum of biomass of green algae, which are the preferred diet for this species. The vertical distribution of the rotifer Hexarthra oxiuris was bimodal with numerical peaks in the epi- and hypolimnion. Reproduction peaks of dominant species were separated in time. The reproduction peak of A. salinus was at the beginning of summer when A. salinus constituted up to 99% of total zooplankton biomass. The development of rotifers was detected after the reproduction peak of A. salinus when the biomass of rotifers reached 50% of total zooplankton biomass. В© 2007 Springer Science+Business Media B.V.

Аннотация: The change in reproductive mode from parthenogenesis to gametogenesis in Cladocera is controlled by multiple environmental cues. Maternal effects are involved in the control of reproductive switching. In this study, we estimated the readiness of Moina macrocopa females to change reproduction mode under the effect of conspecific chemicals on maternal and offspring generations. The results demonstrated that information about the chemical environment was not transmitted between generations (none of the females produced diapausing eggs in the control medium irrespective of their mothers' environment). Differences in maternal energetic investments were not significant, hence the maternal environment did not affect the fecundity. However, tested animals adapted to the effect of the diapause inducing factor. When offspring of mothers cultured in crowded water were also cultured in crowded water (the constant effect of conspecific chemicals), they switched less readily to gametogenesis than offsprings of mothers cultured in fresh medium.

Аннотация: The growth and development of Brachionus plicatilis (Muller), a rotifer and one of the most abundant zooplankton species in Lake Shira, a saline lake at low temperature in the Republic of Khakassia, was studied in cultures at different trophic conditions. Growth indices were evaluated at natural (lake) concentrations of bacteria, Chlorella vulgaris, a microalga, and Candida utilis, a yeast. The negative effect on rotifer reproduction in the algal-bacterial community by blue-green algae was demonstrated. The ratio of ontogenetic periods was shown to be in accord with species and food concentration. Base values required to calculate B. plicatilis population simulation model parameters were defined.

Аннотация: The life support systems (LSS) for long-term missions are to use cycling-recycling systems, including biological recycling. Higher plants are the traditional regenerator of air and producer of food. They should be used in many successive generations of their reproduction in LSS. Studies of influence of microbial associations on germination of wheat seeds and on growth of seedlings under impact of heavy metals are necessary because of migration of heavy metals in LSS. Microbial associations are able to stimulate growth of plants, to protect them from pathogenic organisms and from toxicity of heavy metal salts. The goal of this work was to investigate effect of microbial associations on the germination of wheat seeds and on the growth of seedlings under impact of different concentrations of ZnSO4. The results of investigations showed that:(1)Zinc salt had an adverse effect on germination of wheat seeds, beginning with concentrations of 8 MPC (Maximum Permissible Concentration) and higher.(2)Microbial associations (concentrations -104 to 107 cells/ml) were able to decrease (partly or completely) the adverse effect of ZnSO4 on germination of wheat seeds.(3)Concentrations (104-107 cells/ml) of microbial associations were able to decrease partly the adverse effect of zinc salts (intervals: from 1 to 32 MPS{cyrillic}) on the growth and development of wheat plantlets during heterotrophic phase.(4)The root system of plants was more sensitive to the adverse effect of ZnSO4 than shoots of plants. Аннотация: The study addresses interaction of bacteria and phages in the host-parasite system in batch and continuous cultures. The study system consists of the auxotrophic strain of Brevibacterium - Brevibacterium sp. 22L - and the bacteriophage of Brevibacterium sp., isolated from the soil by the enrichment method.1.Closed system. In the investigation of the relationship between the time of bacterial lysis and multiplicity of phage infection it has been found that at a lower phage amount per cell it takes a longer time for the lysis of the culture to become discernible. Another important factor determining cytolysis in liquid medium is the physiological state of bacterial population. Specific growth rate of bacteria at the moment of phage infection has been chosen as an indicator of the physiological state of bacteria. It has been shown that the shortest latent period and the largest output of the phage are observed during the logarithmic growth phase of bacteria grown under favorable nutrient conditions. In the stationary phase, bacterial cells become "a bad host" for the phage, whose reproduction rate decreases, and the lysis either slows down significantly or does not occur at all.2.Open system. It has been found that in continuous culture, the components of the host-parasite system can coexist over a long period of time. After phage infection, the sizes of the both populations vary for some time and then the density of the host population reaches the level close to that of the uninfected culture. The phage population copies the variations in the density of the host population, but in antiphase. It has been proven that the bacterium becomes resistant to the phage rather soon. It has been supposed that primary resistance is of physiological origin, because the percentage of cells that have survived lysis - about 0.2% of the initial bacterial population - is too high for phage-resistant mutants. Bacteria and phages cultured over extended periods of time in the host-parasite system have been found to co-evolve. The stressful effect of the phage causes development of bacteria resistant to this phage, then a mutant phage capable of lysing these bacteria evolves, etc. В© 2007 COSPAR.

Аннотация: High reproduction rates make the bacterial component of ecosystems a good indicator of the state of the system on the whole. This determines the necessity to develop rapid monitoring of the functional state of the bacterial component of small ecosystems. Information about substrate concentration in the population is indicative of the state of the bacterial culture. Conventional methods of monitoring the concentration of integral substrate in the system take time much longer than the changes in the ecosystem. The paper presents theoretical foundations for the logical sequence "catalase activity - intracellular substrate concentration - estimate of substrate consumed by bacteria" for experimental verification and as a consequence of development of the integral method of monitoring the bacterial population on the basis of determining bacterial catalase activity. Аннотация: The work analyzes functioning of a "producer-consumer" closed aquatic system with spatially separated links, where each component consisted of two species. Producers in the system were the microalgae of Chlorella vulgaris and Scenedesmus sp., consumers - Paramecium caudatum infusoria and Brachionus sp. rotifers. In the experiment the competing predators were consuming on a mixed culture of algae, and the competition of algae was studied under nitrogen limitation. Under these conditions competitiveness of Scenedemus was higher than that of Chlorella vulgaris. Metabolism products of Scenedesmus algae have been found to have negative effect on reproduction of Paramecium caudatum protozoa. Predator population dynamics in the "consumer" link demonstrated that the rotifers that consume two algal species are more competitive compared to protozoa feeding on chlorella only. В© 2001 COSPAR. Аннотация: Experimental models of small biotic cycles of different degree of closure and complexity with spatially separated components based on unicellular organisms have been studied. Gas closure of components looped into "autotroph-heterotroph" (chlorella-yeast) system doubled the lifetime of the system (as opposed to individually cultivated components). Higher complexity of the heterotroph component consisting of two yeast species also increased the lifetime of the system through more complete utilization of the substrate by competing yeast species. The lifetime of gas and substrate closed "producer-consumer" trophic chain (chlorella-paramecia) increased to 7 months. In 60 days the components' numbers reached their steady state followed by more than 40 cycles of the medium. The role of a predator organism (protozoan) in nitrogen cycling was demonstrated; reproduction of protozoa correlated directly with their emission of nitrogen in the ammonia form that is most optimum for growth of chlorella.
