    Amino acid composition of epilithic biofilm and benthic animals in a large Siberian river / A. A. Kolmakova [et al.] // Freshwater Biology. - 2013. - Vol. 58, Is. 10. - P2180-2195, DOI 10.1111/fwb.12200 . - ISSN 0046-5070

Amino acids -- Epilithic microalgae and cyanobacteria -- Nutritive quality -- River ecosystem -- Zoobenthos
Аннотация: We studied amino acid (AA) composition of epilithic biofilms and zoobenthos near the shore at a middle section of the Yenisei River (Siberia, Russia). We hypothesised that there was an imbalance between the composition and content of amino acids in the biofilm and its consumers, the zoobenthos, as well as between those in the zoobenthos and fish. Based on monthly sampling from 2007 to 2010, there was seasonal variation in AA profiles in the epilithic biofilms, probably caused by the succession of microalgal and cyanobacterial species. Overall, there was an imbalance in the percentage of the essential amino acids (lysine and histidine) between benthic animals and their food (the epilithic biofilm), which suggests that benthic animals may be limited by food quality. Moreover, the zoobenthos had a significantly higher content of AA, relative to carbon, than the biofilm. Based on sampling in 2012, there was an imbalance between the AA profiles of zoobenthos and that of their main consumer, the Siberian grayling (Thymallus arcticus), particularly in the percentages of two essential amino acids, lysine and leucine. In terms of overall content of essential amino acids, the nutritional value to fish of gammarids, which have recently invaded the river, was significantly lower than that of indigenous taxa, trichopteran and chironomid larvae. Аннотация: We studied four-link food chain, periphytic microalgae and water moss (producers), trichopteran larvae (consumers I), gammarids (omnivorous - consumers II) and Siberian grayling (consumers III) at a littoral site of the Yenisei River on the basis of three years monthly sampling. Analysis of bulk carbon stable isotopes and compound specific isotope analysis of fatty acids (FA) were done. As found, there was a gradual depletion in 13C contents of fatty acids, including essential FA upward the food chain. In all the trophic levels a parabolic dependence of ? 13C values of fatty acids on their degree of unsaturation/chain length occurred, with 18:2n-6 and 18:3n-3 in its lowest point. The pattern in the ? 13C differences between individual fatty acids was quite similar to that reported in literature for marine pelagic food webs. Hypotheses on isotope fractionation were suggested to explain the findings. В© 2012 Gladyshev et al.

Аннотация: Methods of atomic absorption, flame photometry, and emission spectral analysis were used to study the concentrations of metals in water and major ecosystem components of the Yenisei River upstream of Krasnoyarsk City (conventionally background area). The mean bulk concentrations of Al and Cu in water exceeded the MAC for water bodies used for fishery. Cu concentration in freshwater shrimp was found to be reliably higher than that in the link of primary producers (periphyton), and Cd concentration in caddis fly larvae was found to exceed that in water moss. The maximal concentrations of metals among the examined aquatic organisms were recorded in periphyton. Cr concentration in the muscles of Arctic grayling was found to exceed some international standards. В© 2009 Pleiades Publishing, Ltd.

Аннотация: Seasonal variations of fatty acid contents in muscle tissue of one of the main food fish species in Siberian rivers, grayling, Thymallus arcticus, were studied over 3 years. Under a comparatively low range of water temperature variations, spawning appeared to be the main cause of seasonal changes in contents of quantitatively prominent and essential fatty acids in fish filets. In general, fish accumulated essential polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA), such as eicosapentaenoic (EPA) and docosahexaenoic (DHA), in their muscle tissue before reproductive seasons and then the PUFA seemed to be transferred into gonads during their formation. Hard roe of Siberian grayling had 3-4 times higher PUFA contents, than had that of the muscle tissue. The fish species, T. arcticus, was found to be a valuable source of the essential PUFA, including EPA and DHA, for human diet. В© 2007 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Аннотация: Seasonal dynamics of contents of essential polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA) in dominant groups of benthic invertebrates: gammarids (Gammaridae, Amphipoda), oligochaetes (Oligochaeta), chironomid larvae (Chironomidae, Diptera) and caddisfly larvae (Trichoptera), and dominant benthivorous fish, Siberian grayling Thymallus arcticus, have been studied in ecosystem of the large Siberian river. During the year of the study most benthic invertebrate taxa showed significant variations in the contents of both C-18 and long chain C-20-22 PUFAs. In contrast, the fish, which consumed the zoobenthos, had no significant seasonal variations in long chain PUFAs' contents. Thereby, the fish, as organisms of relatively higher evolution level than invertebrates, was supposed to have more strict metabolic control of long chain PUFAs' contents. Evidence was obtained that the studied fish species, grayling, may be capable to convert dietary EPA into DHA. В© 2006 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

Eicosapentaenoic acid -- Docosahexaenoic acid -- Aquatic ecosystems -- Trophic transfer efficiency
Аннотация: Most omnivorous animals, including humans, have to some degree relied on physiologically important polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs), such as eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) from food. Only some taxa of microalgae, rather than higher plants can synthesize de novo high amounts of EPA and DHA. Once synthesized by microalgae, PUFA are transferred through trophic chain to organisms of higher levels. Thus, aquatic ecosystems play the unique role in the Biosphere as the principal source of EPA and DHA for most omnivorous animals, including inhabitants of terrestrial ecosystems. PUFA are transferred from aquatic to terrestrial ecosystems through riparian predators, drift of carrion and seaweeds, emergence of amphibiotic insects, and water birds. The essential PUFA are transferred through trophic chains with about twice higher efficiency than bulk carbon. Thereby, PUFA are accumulated, rather than diluted in biomass of organisms of higher trophic levels, e.g., in fish. Mankind is faced with a severe deficiency of EPA and DHA in diet. Although additional sources of PUFA supply for humans, such as aquaculture, biotechnology of microorganisms and transgenic terrestrial oil-seed producing plants are developed, natural fish production of aquatic ecosystems will remain one of the main sources of EPA and DHA for humans. Aquatic ecosystems have to be protected from anthropogenic impacts, such as eutrophication, pollution and warming, which reduce PUFA production. (C) 2013 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

The aim of the research was a comparative evaluation of the intensity of uranium-238 accumulation in the biomass of aquatic organisms, occupying different trophic levels in the ecosystem of the Yenisei river. Previously, uranium-238 at concentrations higher than the background ones was detected in water and sediment samples of the Yenisei River collected close to the discharge site of one of the Rosatom facilities (the Mining-and-Chemical Combine). However, radioecological studies of the Yenisei River ecosystem have not focused on uranium isotopes in aquatic organisms so far. The toxic effects of uranium on living organisms are known to be based on its both radioactive and chemical properties. We conducted a study on accumulation of uranium-238 in aquatic organisms at different trophic levels in the Yenisei River ecosystem between 2010 and 2013. We collected samples of aquatic moss (Fointinalis antipyretica), zoobenthos (Philolimnogammarus viridis and Ph. cyaneus), arctic grayling (Thymallus arcticus), and pike (Esox lucius) from the Yenisei region at a distance of 85-90 km downstream of Krasnoyarsk (5-10 km downstream of the radioactive discharge of the Mining-and-Chemical Combine). Data on samples are shown in Table 1. We determined uranium concentration in the samples of aquatic organisms by neutron activation analysis, in water - by ICP-MS (Table 2). The study shows that uranium can be effectively concentrated from water and accumulate in the biomass of all aquatic organisms used in experiments. The highest uranium concentration factors (CFs) were obtained for aquatic moss, and they were several times higher than the uranium CFs for zoobenthos and fish muscles. Based on the uranium concentration from water, all aquatic organisms of the Yenisei River used in this study can be ranked as follows: aquatic moss > gammarids > grayling = pike. No statistically significant difference has been found between uranium accumulation by fish of different trophic levels (Arctic grayling and pike). The uranium CFs obtained in this study is comparable with the literature data on the CFs of artificial radionuclides for aquatic moss and fish of the Yenisei River

The Yenisei River is contaminated with artificial radionuclides due to the weapons-grade plutonium production at the Mining-and-Chemical Combine (MCC) at Zheleznogorsk (Russia) for more than 50 years. The last reactor plant at the MCC was shut down in 2010. The research presents the data on accumulation of artificial radionuclides in wild fish (pike, Esox lucius; grayling, Thymallus arcticus; and dace, Leuciscus leuciscus baicalensis) inhabiting the radioactively contaminated part of the Yenisei River between 2005 and 2014. Among artificial radionuclides that were detected in fish muscles when the last nuclear reactor plant was operating (32P, 60Co, 65Zn, 137Cs), only 137Cs was recorded four years after the shutdown of the nuclear power plant at the MCC. The concentrations of 137Cs in fish muscles were considerably below the sanitary norms for this radionuclide in the Russian Federation. Piscivorous fish species accumulated higher concentration of 137Cs in their muscles than non-predatory species. Concentration of 137Cs in fish fauna of the Yenisei River did not decrease after the shutdown of the last nuclear power plant at the MCC, while the concentration of radionuclides with induced activity decreased considerably. This can be explained by the constant inflow of 137Cs into the Yenisei River due to discharges from the radiochemical plant at the MCC and the deposits of 137Cs in the bottom sediments. We can expect that the concentration of 137Cs in fish muscles will not decrease in the next few decades.

Аннотация: The seasonal dynamics of feeding spectra and diet of Arctic graying in a stretch of the middle reaches of the Yenisei River (from the dam of the Krasnoyarsk HPP to the mouth of the Kan River) was studied in 2009–2013. Its connection with the food-supply state and fish growth has been traced. It has been shown that the intensity of fish feeding is relatively stable throughout the year, despite significant fluctuations in zoobenthos biomass. The contribution of groups dominating in diet (amphipods and larvae of caddisflies) changes depending on the month. Amphipods prevail in the diet of fish during the period from June to October and caddisflies prevail in the winter and spring months. Among caddisflies, selective feeding on a small species, Apatania crymophila, has been revealed. The change of the primary diet component during the summer period corresponds to a sharp increase in the coefficients of relative condition factors with a peak in August–September. It has been assumed that changes in the ratio of weight and linear sizes of fish are associated not only with an increase in the water temperature, but also with the grayling switching to the consumption of amphipods with a higher nutrition value. © 2017, Pleiades Publishing, Ltd.

Аннотация: The present study proves the presence of seasonal variability of LWRs of Arctic grayling and Siberian dace inhabiting the middle reaches of the Yenisei River. LWRs were estimated using total length (cm) and total body weight (g). The literature data on LWRs of dace and grayling from different regions were compared using log a over b plot. The comparison revealed that seasonal variability of LWRs was wider than the geographic variability for these species. The position of points on the plot can be used to predict the season of sample collection and vice versa.

Аннотация: We investigated time-dependent trends of artificial radionuclides in aquatic moss, zoobenthos (amphipods and caddisfly larvae), and three abundant wild fish species (Northern pike, Arctic grayling, and Siberian dace) inhabiting the Yenisei River in the vicinity of the radioactive discharge site in 2007–2015, in a period before and after the shutdown of the last nuclear reactor plant at the Mining-and-Chemical Combine (MCC), which occurred in 2010. From our research, we learned that concentrations of short-lived radionuclides, whose discharges to the Yenisei either stopped or declined after the shutdown of the reactor plant at the MCC (24Na, 46Sc,51Cr, 54Mn, 58Co, 59Fe, 60Co, 65Zn, 103Ru, 141,144Ce, 152,154Eu, 239Np), decreased in biota samples as well. The ecological half-life (EHL) of 65Zn (0.4–0.7 y) was similar to the physical half-life of this isotope, the EHLs of 60Co (1.2–2.1 y) and 152Eu (1.8 y) were shorter than the physical half-lives of these isotopes. Concentration of 137Cs did not decrease significantly in biota of the Yenisei after the shutdown of the last reactor plant because the discharges of this radionuclide to the Yenisei continued at the same level. On a longer-term scale (since 1973 and since 1991), concentration of 137Cs in fish muscle had significantly decreased, following the decrease in annual discharges of this radionuclide to the Yenisei, and the EHL of 137Cs was estimated as 6.5–12.8 y. Statistically significant correlation with annual discharges of 137Cs was revealed for the concentration of this radionuclide in grayling (whole bodies and muscle); dace (muscle), and amphipods. Despite their ability to accumulate high concentrations of 137Cs, aquatic moss and caddisfly larvae (analyzed together with their stony casings) were not sensitive to interannual fluctuations in the releases of this radionuclide to the Yenisei. Among the analyzed fish species of the Yenisei, the highest activity concentration of 137Cs was revealed in pike (body and muscle), indicating biomagnification of this radionuclide in the top level of the trophic chain. © 2019 Elsevier Ltd

Аннотация: Abstract: The number of circuli between annual scale rings of grayling Thymallus baicalensis Dybowski, 1874 sampled in the Yenisei River in the downstream section of the Krasnoyarsk Hydroelectric Power Station, which does not freeze in winter, have been investigated and compared with populations of grayling from large tributaries of the Yenisei River (Amyl, Kan, Nizhnyaya Tunguska, and Bolshaya Kheta). It has been shown that graylings inhabiting the Yenisei River have a significantly higher (1.5–2.0 times, p < 0.01) number of circuli in the second, third, and fourth annual rings of the scales than in the populations from the tributaries, which corresponds to a higher growth rate of the grayling population in the Yenisei River. An assumption is made about the transition of graylings inhabiting the Yenisei River channel in the lower reaches of the hydroelectric station to a sedentary lifestyle. © 2021, Pleiades Publishing, Ltd.

Аннотация: Long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acids of n-3 family (n-3 LC PUFAs) are physiologically essential compounds required for normal growth and development of animals, including humans. The ability of fish species to synthesize n-3 LC PUFAs varies significantly across different trophic levels. We have studied fatty acid (FA) content (mg/g of wet weight) and level (% of total FAs) in the brain, liver, heart, intestine, female and male gonads, muscle, and adipose tissues of commercially important wild freshwater Baikal grayling. Additionally, FA content and level of Baikal grayling juveniles have been studied. In all tissues of Baikal grayling, some LC PUFAs, namely, 24:5n-3 and 24:6n-3 (C24 PUFAs), have been found. These FAs are the intermediate products in the synthesis of docosahexaenoic acid (DHA, 22:6n-3) by the Sprecher pathway. The levels of C24 PUFAs in tissues differed significantly: the highest levels of C24 PUFAs were found in adipose tissue and the lowest values in the gonads of females, liver, brain, and head of juveniles. According to the dynamics of DHA and C24 PUFAs, the maximum rate of DHA synthesis is achieved in brain of Baikal grayling, while the lowest rate of DHA synthesis probably occurs in adipose tissue. Although all studied tissues had differences in the number of FAs and their levels, 16:0, 18:1n-9, 16:1n-7, 20:5n-3, and DHA dominated. Male gonads contained an extremely high level of furan FAs — presumably beneficial substances for human health. Additionally, the nutritional value of the tissues of Baikal grayling as a source of n-3 LC PUFAs for humans has been estimated. © 2021, The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer Nature Switzerland AG.

Аннотация: The seasonal formation of annual rings on the scales of Baikal grayling from the middle reaches of the Yenisei River has been studied to find out the reasons for the high growth rate of the grayling under altered temperature regime downstream of the dam of the Krasnoyarsk Hydroelectric Plant. The number of circuli outside the last identified annuli and in the second, third, and fourth completed annuli was estimated on 569 fish caught during the annual cycle. The von Bertalanffy growth function was used to describe the increment in the number of circuli over a year. The calculation showed that a new annual ring was produced in July. In November, there was no statistically significant difference between the circulus number in scale increment and the circulus number in the corresponding completed annuli of older fish. Thus, despite the increased duration of the period with optimal water temperatures downstream of the dam of the Krasnoyarsk Hydroelectric Plant, fish growth was observed in a limited period of the year, from July to November. The probable reason for the high growth rate of grayling in the study area is that the fish do not have to waste energy on seasonal migration to the tributaries. Taking into account that grayling biomass production in the middle Yenisei occurs from July to November, we can recommend shifting the dates of commercial fishing for grayling to the end of this period—November–December. © 2021, The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer Nature B.V.
