Аннотация: During three field seasons (June-September) of 1997-99 contents of Na, K, Ca, Mg, Fe, Mn, Zn, Cu, Al, Cr, Ni, Cd, and Pb were determined in compartments of ecosystem (surrounding soils, bottom sediments, water, zoobenthos, macrophytes, and fish) of a fish and recreation pond situated at the edge of Krasnoyarsk City (Siberia, Russia). Contents of most parts of metals in soils, water, and macrophytes significantly correlated with each other. As concluded, their contents were determined by natural, general, geochemical peculiarities of the region. Heavy metals, contents of which were higher than federal upper limits of concentration, were revealed. In muscles of fish with different feeding spectra - crucian and perch - concentrations of some metals differed significantly; correlation graphs for metals also had different structures. Comparison of our data with those on diverse aquatic ecosystems of Siberia, Europe, North America, and China published in the last decade was carried out. It was concluded that a distribution of heavy metals in the compartments of an aquatic ecosystem presently have to be determined for each particular water body until general regularities are discovered.

Аннотация: The life support systems (LSS) for long-term missions are to use cycling-recycling systems, including biological recycling. Higher plants are the traditional regenerator of air and producer of food. They should be used in many successive generations of their reproduction in LSS. Studies of influence of microbial associations on germination of wheat seeds and on growth of seedlings under impact of heavy metals are necessary because of migration of heavy metals in LSS. Microbial associations are able to stimulate growth of plants, to protect them from pathogenic organisms and from toxicity of heavy metal salts. The goal of this work was to investigate effect of microbial associations on the germination of wheat seeds and on the growth of seedlings under impact of different concentrations of ZnSO4. The results of investigations showed that:(1)Zinc salt had an adverse effect on germination of wheat seeds, beginning with concentrations of 8 MPC (Maximum Permissible Concentration) and higher.(2)Microbial associations (concentrations -104 to 107 cells/ml) were able to decrease (partly or completely) the adverse effect of ZnSO4 on germination of wheat seeds.(3)Concentrations (104-107 cells/ml) of microbial associations were able to decrease partly the adverse effect of zinc salts (intervals: from 1 to 32 MPS{cyrillic}) on the growth and development of wheat plantlets during heterotrophic phase.(4)The root system of plants was more sensitive to the adverse effect of ZnSO4 than shoots of plants.     High Resistance of Resting Eggs of Cladoceran Moina macrocopa to the Effect of Heavy Metals / N. Oskina [et al.] // Bull. Environ. Contam. Toxicol. - 2018, DOI 10.1007/s00128-018-2473-7 . - Article in press. - ISSN 0007-4861

Аннотация: The research aimed to determine critical concentrations of heavy metals at which survival of resting eggs of the cladoceran Moina macrocopa is negatively affected. Resting eggs’ viability was not affected over a 30-days exposure towards copper, cadmium, zinc or nickel at concentrations up to 60–70 g/L. When resting eggs were exposed to sediment contaminated with heavy metals for 8 months, the hatching success was affected at 30 g copper/kg. Thus, resting eggs of Cladocera can tolerate heavy metals at concentrations that far exceed lethal concentrations of heavy metals to active life stage and exceed low or moderate levels of environmental pollution. Follow up investigation of life table parameters of hatchlings from resting eggs exposed to heavy metals demonstrated that neither lifespan nor fecundity of hatchlings differ from control animals. These results demonstrate that zooplankton may rapidly recover from resting egg bank once aquatic habitat becomes unpolluted. © 2018, Springer Science+Business Media, LLC, part of Springer Nature.

    Computing-feasibility study of NASA nutrition requirements as applied to a bioregenerative life support system / V. S. Kovalev, N. S. Manukovsky, A. A. Tikhomirov // Acta Astronaut. - 2019. - Vol. 159. - P371-376, DOI 10.1016/j.actaastro.2019.04.001 . - ISSN 0094-5765

Аннотация: In view of previous studies, a list of 46 foods designated for use in bioregenerative life support system was composed. With the help of a computer program, daily sets of foods of plant and animal origin were compiled from the list of foods. The objective function of modeling was intended to minimize the discrepancy between the calculated values of nutrients in daily food sets and NASA nutrition requirements for long-duration missions. The independent variables in the model were the masses of foods restricted by the lower and upper bounds. It was established that a food set is able to comprise 10-46 foods with violation of the NASA nutrition requirements for iron, vitamin B5 and vitamin D daily intakes. Inclusion of 9 foods in a set resulted in a further violation of the NASA standards concerning saturated fat. As the number of foods in a set has increased from 10 to 22, the objective function decreased from 1.0736 to 1.0332, followed by a gradual increase to 1.1233, when the maximum number of foods was selected from the list of foods. The source of uncertainty in the interpretation of modeling results are the standard NASA intakes of magnesium, potassium, zinc, manganese, vitamin C, thiamin, riboflavin, niacin, vitamin B6, folate, vitamin B12, vitamin E, vitamin K and n-6 fatty acids, given as exact values. Varying the nutrient content of food sets did not significantly affect the value of the objective function. However, some solutions were infeasible, due to the violation of the NASA standard concerning saturated fat. Also, there were food sets in which the scores of sulfur-containing amino acids and threonine were below 100. In order to reliably maintain the scores of essential amino acids above 100 in a food set, it is necessary to maintain a mass ratio of “animal protein/total protein” equal to 2/3 in accordance with the requirement of NASA. © 2019 IAA

piscivorous fish -- toxic metals -- body length -- body weight -- size effect
Аннотация: The trophic position of fish is one of the most important factors controlling the accumulation of potentially toxic elements and compounds in fish tissues, primarily via the spectrum of fish nutrition. In this study, the content of potentially toxic transition metals (Cu, Zn, Mn, Pb, and Cd) and radiocesium (Cs-137) in the edible tissues (muscles and liver) of two representatives of the fish-eating ichthyofauna of the Yenisei River, northern pike (Esox lucius) and burbot (Lota lota), have been comparatively studied relatively to the size of the fish. A significant decrease in the content of radiocesium and zinc in the muscles of pike and zinc in the liver of pike with an increase in body size has been recorded in juvenile pikes with a body weight (W) of less than 0.35 kg. For larger sexually mature pikes, no significant size dependences of the accumulation of metals in tissues are found. A positive correlation is found between the content of Cs-137, Cu, Zn, and Mn in muscles and the size of burbot in the W range from 0.42 to 1.62 kg. The tissues of burbots and pikes of the same size significantly (p < 0.05) differ in the concentration of metals in their tissues: concentrations of Zn and Mn are 1.6-2.2 times higher in the muscle of burbot; the concentration of Pb is 1.8 times higher in muscle of pike; Cu is twice as high in the liver of burbot; and Zn and Mn are 4.7 and 1.6 times higher in the liver of pike, respectively. These differences may be due to the different food spectra of pike and burbot. Concentrations of Cu, Zn, and Mn in the liver of pike are 3-7 times higher than in muscle; the concentration of Cu in the liver of burbot is 5 times higher than in muscle. Pb and Cd tend to be higher in liver than muscle for both fish species. Despite the revealed size dependences, the concentrations of potentially toxic metals and radiocesium in the muscles and liver of fish are below the permissible concentrations for food. These results can be used to assess environmental risks for the population consuming fish, as well as to plan for the long-term environmental monitoring of rivers using representatives of piscivorous fish.
