Аннотация: Recruitment of pelagic populations of cyanobacteria from littoral bottom sediments is assumed to be one of the key factors for the development of harmful blooms. Therefore, it is necessary to obtain more information on the possible factors influencing the spatial distribution of the resting stages in littoral bottom sediments. To test the hypothesis that akinete abundances in littoral bottom sediments are associated with silt and the presence of higher water plants, we sampled spatial and vertical distribution and seasonal dynamics of akinetes of cyanobacterium Anabaena flos-aquae in a small Siberian reservoir. We found that akinetes accumulate in silt at stations located in macrophyte beds. Two experiments were carried out to test if there is relationship between size of inoculum and size of the pelagic population of A. flos-aquae. The proportion of A. flos-aquae in total phytoplankton biomass depended on the initial abundance of akinetes in bottom sediments. The model based on laboratory experiments gave good qualitative description of the field data. These findings can be useful to predict the location of the main akinete accumulation zones in a water body and plan the removal of sediment to prevent the cyanobacterial blooms. В© CSIRO 2011.

Аннотация: Seasonal dynamics of Anabaena flos-aquae (Lyngb.) Breb., including vegetative cells, akinetes and akinete envelopes, in bottom sediments and water column at both littoral and deeper central stations of a small Siberian reservoir was studied. Two types of akinetes were observed: in the first half of summer Anabaena formed akinetes, which served for vegetative reproduction and germinated in water column soon after differentiation, while in the second half of summer the akinetes produced served as a resting stages, which were deposited to bottom sediments. Canonical correlation analyses revealed that decrease of water temperature was the main environmental factor that stimulated the akinete formation. In contrast to the general opinion, concentration of inorganic phosphorus slightly, but positively influenced the akinete formation. Thus, akinetes formed in response to the temperature decrease, needs a certain level of this nutrient. At littoral and open-water stations abundance and seasonal dynamics of akinetes in water column and their sinking pattern were very similar. However, seasonal dynamics of abundance of akinetes in sediments in these two reservoir locations differed: whereas the abundance of akinetes in open water increased permanently during the summer, that in the littoral decreased soon after their sedimentation. The cause for decrease in abundance of akinetes in bottom sediments in winter is unknown. В© Springer 2006.

Аннотация: The vertical distribution and abundance of Gammarus lacustris in the pelagic zone of two fishless meromictic lakes, L. Shira and L. Shunet, in Southern Siberia (Russia), was studied with the underwater video recording system and using vertical hauls. In both lakes, during summer stratification, Gammarus was distributed non-homogenously, with a stable peak in the metalimnion. The average depth of Gammarus population in the pelagic zone was significantly correlated with the depth of the thermocline. Gammarus abundances obtained using vertical plankton hauls with net were quite comparable with those obtained from video records. The peak abundance of Gammarus in the pelagic zone of the lakes observed with underwater video amounted up to 400 individuals m-2, while the peak animal densities in the metalimnion reached 50 ind. m-3. The data are compared with previously published abundances of Gammarus in the littoral of Lake Shira. Both littoral and pelagic can be equally important habitats for amphipods in meromictic lakes. The absence of fish in the pelagic zone, high oxygen concentration, low water temperature, increased seston concentration, elevated water density in the metalimnion and the anoxic hypolimnion can be the most probable combination of factors that are responsible for the peak of Gammarus in the metalimnion of these lakes. Аннотация: The specific composition, vertical distribution and daily migration of plankton in a meromictic salt lake, Lake Shira, have been investigated. The main structural components of the ecosystem are bacteria, algae and crustaceans. Since the late 1970s, blue-green algae are reported as dominant. Nowadays the phytoplankton is dominated by Lyngbya contorta, Microcystis ichtyoblabe (Cyanophyta), Cyclotella tuberculata (Bacillariophyta) and Dictyosphaerium tetrachotomum (Chlorophyta). The zooplankton of Lake Shira comprises Arctodiaptomus salinus (Copepoda), Brachionus plicatilis and Hexarthra oxiuris (Rotatoria). Investigation revealed a stratified vertical distribution of all dominant species except Cyclotella with a maximum at a depth of 12-15 m during the summer growth period. Zooplanktons differ in the pattern of distribution and daily migration, but most zooplankton tend to concentrate near the surface. The possible reasons for the vertical distribution of the plankton are discussed.

Аннотация: The population heterogeneity of recombinant and plasmid-free Bacillus subtilis strains introduced into aquatic microcosms was studied. After introduction, the population of the plasmid-free strain B. subtilis 2335 in microcosms has long been represented by both vegetative cells and spores, whereas, already ten days after introduction, the population of the recombinant strain B. subtilis 2335/105 (KmI)Inf+) was represented only by spores. The number of plasmid copies in the spore isolates of the recombinant strain was the same as before introduction, but the plasmid abundance in the vegetative isolates of this strain decreased. The isolates of B. subtilis 2335/105 obtained from microcosms and the variants of this strain obtained by ten successive subcultures on M9 and 0.1?M9 media with and without kanamycin (Km) differed in the number of plasmid copies, Km resistance, and maximum biomass yield during batch cultivation. Irrespective of the presence of Km, more than 50% of the variants subcultured on M9 medium showed reduced plasmid abundance. At the same time, about 70% of the variants subcultured on 0.1 ? M9 medium with Km and 90% of the variants subcultured on the same medium without Km retained the initial number of plasmid copies. The variants subcultured on media with Km retained the initial biomass level. In more than 70% of the variants isolated from media without Km, the biomass yield increased. Аннотация: The vertical and seasonal distributions of the phytoflagellate Cryptomonas spp., and its most common, the planktonic ciliate predators (Oligotrichida, Scuticociliatida, Hypotrichida and Prostomatida) were investigated in chemocline region of small saline, meromictic lake Shunet (Siberia, Russia) during 2003 and 2005. The lake has a pronounced chemocline, with abundance of purple and green sulphur bacteria. Vertical distribution of the Cryptomonas populations near the oxic/anoxic boundary layer was studied at close intervals in water sampled using a hydraulically operated thin-layer sampler. In both summer and winter, Cryptomonas peaked in water stratum 5-10 cm above anoxic zone or in the anoxic zone water column in the chemocline (about 5 m). Ciliate densities and biomass were also much higher in chemocline than in mixolimnion. The range of diurnal migration of Cryptomonas population was not very wide, and it was restricted to layers with high light intensity. The ciliates were sometimes detected above the upper border of the anoxic zone but also several centimetres below this zone. В© 2010 Springer Science+Business Media B.V.

    Model of population with optimally migrating individuals [Текст] / S. A. Motolygin, M. G. Sadovsky, D. A. Chukov // Zhurnal Obshchei Biol. - 1999. - Vol. 60, Is. 4. - P. 450-459. - Cited References: 21 . - ISSN 0044-4596

Аннотация: The new model was proposed to study the dynamic of spatially distributed populations with nonrandom migrating individuals. All migrations are resulted in maximization of the average net reproduction rate taking into account the cost of migration. The model belongs to a box type: individuals migrate between two stations and have complete information about living conditions both in the stations of residence and migration. The information is determined by dependence of reproduction rate on the abundance of individuals in the station. Numerical experiments showed that taking into account the goal-directed migrations caused the following effects: significant extension of the value of external conditions leading to the stable existence of population; increase in the average abundance of population; broadening of the observed set of dynamic regimes. The limitation of the model application are discussed.

Аннотация: We present data on studies of protists in Lake Khanka in late August-early September. A total of 99 species of protists have been found, of them 14 phytoflagellates, 14 zooflagellates, five sarcodins, two heliozoans, 62 infusoria, and two suctorians. Small infusoria from the class of Kinetophragminophora, order Oligotrichida, as well as suborder Tetrahymenina were most numerous. The density of many protist species in Lake Khanka exceeds markedly that in several other high-productivity water reservoirs. Most of the protists belong to bacteriovores (bacteriophages). Many of the found species have high density. This is evidence of the production of bacterial plankton in the lake. In view of very high water turbidity in the lake, we assume that the total production of phytoplankton is not that high. In this connection, an abundance of protists (protist plankton) indicates is an indication for the existence of an additional source of organic matter in Lake Khanka.

Аннотация: Two species "prey-predator model" where the individuals purposefully migrate between two habitats is considered. A migration is regarded as transference from one habitat to another yielding in maximization of average (over two habitats) coefficient of reproduction. Targeted migration results in the increase in average abundance of population comparing with discrete analogies of classic equations of Volterra and also to the enlargement of the area of the admissible meanings of parameters. A great variety of dynamic regimes has been observed, some of them could be interpreted as outbreak explosion.

Аннотация: Understanding the factors that regulate the abundance, size structure and community structure of cladocerans is an important goal of aquatic ecologists. While both top-down and bottom-up factors help to structure cladoceran communities, there may be interactions between these factors. We conducted a mesocosm study to determine how alien large-bodied Daphnia, zebra mussels and fish affected cladoceran community and size structure. We found that large-bodied Daphnia reduced algal resources and the fecundity of smaller bodied cladocerans. Fish removed the large-bodied Daphnia magna from the mesocosms and shifted the cladoceran community to a smaller body size. Fish also appeared to promote increases in cladoceran diversity through the coexistence of several smaller bodied taxa. In contrast, zebra mussels increased cyanobacteria and helped to promote the success of the alien Daphnia, but reduced the biomass of small-bodied cladocerans. Zebra mussels reduced the carbon (C):phosphorus (P) ratio of the phytoplankton in the mesocosms which may have favored the relatively P-limited Daphnia. Combined, our results highlight the complex interactions of multiple factors that help to regulate cladoceran community and size structure.

FRESH-WATER
   NONCONSUMPTIVE MORTALITY

   NONPREDATORY MORTALITY

Аннотация: Background Mortality is a main driver in zooplankton population biology but it is poorly constrained in models that describe zooplankton population dynamics, food web interactions and nutrient dynamics. Mortality due to non-predation factors is often ignored even though anecdotal evidence of non-predation mass mortality of zooplankton has been reported repeatedly. One way to estimate non-predation mortality rate is to measure the removal rate of carcasses, for which sinking is the primary removal mechanism especially in quiescent shallow water bodies. Objectives and Results We used sediment traps to quantify in situ carcass sinking velocity and non-predation mortality rate on eight consecutive days in 2013 for the cladoceran Bosmina longirostris in the oligo-mesotrophic Lake Stechlin; the outcomes were compared against estimates derived from in vitro carcass sinking velocity measurements and an empirical model correcting in vitro sinking velocity for turbulence resuspension and microbial decomposition of carcasses. Our results show that the latter two approaches produced unrealistically high mortality rates of 0.58-1.04 d(-1), whereas the sediment trap approach, when used properly, yielded a mortality rate estimate of 0.015 d(-1), which is more consistent with concurrent population abundance data and comparable to physiological death rate from the literature. Ecological implications Zooplankton carcasses may be exposed to water column microbes for days before entering the benthos; therefore, non-predation mortality affects not only zooplankton population dynamics but also microbial and benthic food webs. This would be particularly important for carbon and nitrogen cycles in systems where recurring mid-summer decline of zooplankton population due to non-predation mortality is observed.

long-term dynamics -- meromictic lake -- purple sulfur bacteria -- stratification
Аннотация: According to the results of seasonal monitoring, in 2007–2013 purple sulfur bacteria morphologically similar to Thiocapsa sp. Shira_1 (AJ633676 in EMBL/GenBank) predominated in the anoxygenic phototrophic community of the water column of the meromictic Lake Shira (Khakassia, Siberia). No pronounced seasonal periodicity in the total cell number in the water column was revealed during the period of observation. In some years cell number during the period when the lake was covered with ice was reliably higher than in summer. The absence of seasonal periodicity was probably due to the low amplitude of seasonal variations in temperature and illumination in the redox zone, resulting from its relatively deep location (12–16 m). The year-to-year dynamics was characterized by a reliable decrease of the total cell number in 2009–2010 and maxima in 2007 and 2011–2012. Canonical correlation analysis revealed that water temperature in the redox zone was the best predictor of the PSB abundance in Lake Shira. Water temperature, in turn, depended on the depth of mixing of the water column. Intense mixing in 2009–2011 was probably responsible for decreased PSB abundance in the lake. On the other hand, the absence of deep winter mixing, resulting in stable conditions in the chemocline, favored the preservation of relatively high PSB biomass. Prediction of circulation depth, which depends mainly on the weather conditions and dynamics of the water level, is required for prediction of PSB abundance in Lake Shira. These results may be useful for paleolimnological reconstructions of the history of the lake based on the remnants of purple sulfur bacteria in bottom sediments. © 2016, Pleiades Publishing, Ltd.

Аннотация: Meromictic lakes located in landlocked steppes of central Asia (similar to 2500 km inland) have unique geophysiochemical characteristics compared to other meromictic lakes. To characterize their bacteria and elucidate relationships between those bacteria and surrounding environments, water samples were collected from three saline meromictic lakes (Lakes Shira, Shunet and Oigon) in the border between Siberia and the West Mongolia, near the center of Asia. Based on in-depth tag pyrosequencing, bacterial communities were highly variable and dissimilar among lakes and between oxic and anoxic layers within individual lakes. Proteobacteria, Bacteroidetes, Cyanobacteria, Actinobacteria and Firmicutes were the most abundant phyla, whereas three genera of purple sulfur bacteria (a novel genus, Thiocapsa and Halochromatium) were predominant bacterial components in the anoxic layer of Lake Shira (similar to 20.6% of relative abundance), Lake Shunet (similar to 27.1%) and Lake Oigon (similar to 9.25%), respectively. However, few known green sulfur bacteria were detected. Notably, 3.94% of all sequencing reads were classified into 19 candidate divisions, which was especially high (23.12%) in the anoxic layer of Lake Shunet. Furthermore, several hydro-parameters (temperature, pH, dissolved oxygen, H2S and salinity) were associated (P0.05) with variations in dominant bacterial groups. In conclusion, based on highly variable bacterial composition in water layers or lakes, we inferred that the meromictic ecosystem was characterized by high diversity and heterogenous niches.

Аннотация: Long-term monitoring of the abundance and spatial distribution of 18 widespread species of Odonata has made it possible to assess their contribution to the export of aquatic productivity that entered the Barabinsk forest-steppe ecosystem. The annual emergence of Odonata varies from 0.8 to 4.9 g/m2 of the land area and from 2.3 to 13.3 g/m2 of the water area, which is 4–5 times larger than that in Diptera. The total flux of organic matter from water to terrestrial ecosystems remains relatively stable (sixfold interannual variability) irrespective of large interannual variations in the abundance of separate species (e.g., 42-fold interannual variability in Libellula quadrimaculata). The metal content was determined in nine Odonata species. Export of metals by dragonflies decreases in the series K > Na > Mg > Ca > Fe > Zn > Cu > Mn > Pb > Ni > Cr > Cd. Therefore, odonates appear to be quantitatively and qualitatively important providers of aquatic resources to the forest-steppe landscape of Western Siberia. © 2016, Pleiades Publishing, Ltd.

Аннотация: Based on 31-year field study of the abundance and biomass of 18 species of odonates in the Barabinsk Forest–Steppe (Western Siberia, Russia), we quantified the contribution of odonates to the export of aquatic productivity to surrounding terrestrial landscape. Emergence varied from 0.8 to 4.9 g of wet biomass per m2 of land area per year. Average export of organic carbon was estimated to be 0.30 g·m? 2·year? 1, which is comparable with the average production of herbivorous terrestrial insects in temperate grasslands. Moreover, in contrast to terrestrial insects, emerging odonates contained high quantities of highly unsaturated fatty acids (HUFA), namely eicosapentaenoic acid (20:5n-3, EPA), and docosahexaenoic acid (22:6n-3, DHA), which are known to be essential for many terrestrial animals, especially for birds. The export of EPA + DHA by odonates was found to be 1.92–11.76 mg·m? 2·year? 1, which is equal to an average general estimation of the export of HUFA by emerging aquatic insects. Therefore, odonates appeared to be a quantitatively and qualitatively important conduit of aquatic productivity to forest-steppe ecosystem. © 2017 Elsevier B.V.

Tebuconazole -- Poly-3-hydroxybutyrate -- Fungicidal effect -- Fusariummoniliforme -- Wheat plant communities -- Root rot
Аннотация: Fungicidal activity of experimental tebuconazole (TEB) formulations was investigated in laboratory soil ecosystems in wheat plant communities infected by Fusarium moniliforme. TEB was embedded in the matrix of poly-3-hydroxybutyrate, shaped as films and microgranules. These formulations were buried in the soil with wheat plants, and their efficacy was compared with that of commercial formulation Raxil and with the effect of pre-sowing treatment of seeds. In the experiment with the initially infected seeds and a relatively low level of natural soil infection caused by Fusarium fungi, the effects of the experimental P(3HB)/TEB formulations and Raxil were comparable. However, when the level of soil infection was increased by adding F. moniliforme spores, P(3HB)/TEB granules and films reduced the total counts of fungi and the abundance of F. moniliforme more effectively than Raxil. Seed treatment or soil treatment with Raxil solution showed an increase in the percentage of rot-damaged roots in the later stages of the experiment. In the early stage (between days 10 and 20), the percentage of rot-damaged roots in the soil with TEB embedded in the slowly degraded P(3HB) matrix was similar to that in the soil with Raxil. However, the efficacy of P(3HB)/TEB formulations lasted longer, and in later stages (between days 20 and 30), the percentage of rot-damaged roots in that group did not grow. In experiments with different TEB formulations and, hence, different fungicidal activities, the increase in plant biomass was 15-17 to 40-60% higher than in the groups where TEB was applied by using conventional techniques.

Аннотация: Zooplankton populations can at times suffer mass mortality due to non-predatory mortality (NPM) factors, and the resulting carcasses can be captured by sediment traps to estimate NPM rate. This approach assumes sinking to be the primary process in removing carcasses, but in reality, carcasses can also be removed by ingestion, turbulent mixing and microbial degradation in the water column. We present mathematical formulations to calculate NPM from sediment trap data by accounting for carcass removal by processes in addition to sinking, and demonstrate their application in a study in Lake Shira, Russia. Carcass abundance of the major calanoid copepod Arctodiaptomus salinus decreased with depth, indicating the effect of carcass removal from the water column. The estimated NPM values (0.0003-0.103 d(-1)) were comparable with previously reported physiological death rates. We further used independent data to partition carcass removal due to detritivory, turbulent mixing and microbial degradation. Estimated ingestion by the amphipod Gammarus lacustris could account for the disappearance of copepod carcasses above the traps. Wind-driven turbulence could also extend the carcass exposure time to microbial degradation. Collectively, these water column processes would facilitate the remineralization of carcasses in the water column, and diminish the carcass carbon flux to the benthos.

Аннотация: We estimated the seston elemental composition (C, N, P) and its ratio in pelagic and littoral zones of mesotrophic shallow Lake Obsterno during two contrasting seasons, as well as the influence of macrophyte beds on the seston stoichiometry. In the both pelagial and littoral zones in summer the C : N ratio was small, 4.62 and 7.05 respectively. But it increased slightly during autumn to 5.66 in pelagic samples against 8.33 in littoral ones. The large N : P ratio and the small phosphorus content specially in the macrophyte covered littoral zone equal to 57.7 in July against 22.47 in September suggest a high level of phosphorus limitation in the littoral locations as a possible mediated reason suppressing zooplankton abundance in summer. Our results in the both pelagial and littoral habitat showed a highly P limited situation in which the N : P ratio was larger in littoral with macrophyte than in pelagial zones. The obtained data of littoral seston stoichiometry were recorded for the first time and exceeded the classical Redfield ratio. The elemental imbalance between macrophyte covered littoral and pelagial suggest that nutrients, especially P, are more limiting in macrophyte beds in summer due to the resource competition between phytoplankton and macrophytes for nutrients, a poor food quality, low zooplankton abundance, as well as its poor taxon-specific elemental ratio in summer.
