Аннотация: Spatial distribution of Gammarus lacustris in Lake Shira and growth of young specimens that feed on lake biota were studied. The amphipods have been shown to inhabit the littoral, sublittoral and the upper aphytal zones of the lake on stony-sandy soil and silted sand. The young and adult individuals stay apart. The young live in submerged or semi-submerged vegetation in the littoral, the adults in the sublittoral and upper aphytal zones. Maximum density of amphipods was encountered in the areas influenced by human activity. The feeding experiments revealed that the lake plankton is a more important food source for G. lacustris than any other food species. The specific growth rate measured was 0.039 d-1, with a length increment 0.095 mm d-1.

Аннотация: Samples of olyhydroxyalkanoates (PHAs), polyhydroxybutyrate (PHB) and copolymers poly(hydroxybutyrate-co-hydroxyvalerate) (PHBV) with 4 and 18 mol% hydroxyvalerate, synthesized by the bacteria Ralstonia eutropha B5786, were investigated. PHA films in contact with blood did not activate the hemostasis system at the level of cell response, but they did activate the coagulation system and the complement reaction. To detect biologically-active components in the PHAs, a detailed analysis of the composition of the polymers was conducted. Gas chromatography-mass spectrometry revealed long-chain fatty acids (FAs) in the tested PHAs. Their total concentration in the polymer ranged from tenths of mol% to 2-3 mol%, depending on the purification method. C16:0 constituted the largest proportion, up to 70%. Of the long-chain hydroxy acids, only ?-OH-C14:0 was detected and it did not exceed 0.06 mol%. The analysis of the hemocompatibility properties of the PHAs purified by a specialized procedure, including the quantitative and morphological estimation of platelets adherent to the surface of polymer films, the plasma recalcification time and complement activation studies, indicated that PHB and PHBV can be used in contact with blood. It has been found out that the lipopolysaccharides of bacteria producing PHAs, which contain mostly long-chain hydroxy acids, can be the factor activating the hemostasis systems. Thus, the technology of PHA purification must satisfy rather stringent specific requirements.

Аннотация: Abstract: Fatty acid composition and content of 2 forms of sockeye salmon Oncorhynchus nerka from lakes in Kamchatka Peninsula (Russia) were compared. One form of sockeye salmon was anadromous ("marine"), that is, adult fish migrated in ocean to feed and grow and than return in the lake to breed. Fish of another form, kokanee, never migrate in the ocean. Per cent levels of the main indicators of nutritive value, eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA, 20:5n-3), and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA, 22:6n-3), were significantly higher in the landlocked O. nerka. However, concentrations of EPA and DHA per wet weight of filets were higher in the marine form, because of the relatively higher content of sum of fatty acids in their muscle tissue. As concluded, fish fed in marine environment had higher contents of long-chain n-3 fatty acids per wet weight than fish of the same species, fed in fresh waters. In general, both the anadromous sockeye salmon and the landlocked kokanee salmon can be recommended for human diet as a valuable product concerning contents of EPA and DHA. Amphibiotic insects -- Essential fatty acids -- Metamorphosis -- Mosquitoes -- Short-chain polyunsaturated fatty acids
Аннотация: Emerging aquatic insects, including mosquitoes, are known to transfer to terrestrial ecosystems specific essential biochemicals, such as polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA). We studied fatty acid (FA) composition and contents of dominant mosquito populations (Diptera: Culicidae), that is, Anopheles messeae, Ochlerotatus caspius, Oc. flavescens, Oc. euedes, Oc. subdiversus, Oc. cataphylla, and Aedes cinereus, inhabited a steppe wetland of a temperate climate zone to fill up the gap in their lipid knowledge. The polar lipid and triacylglycerol fractions of larvae and adults were compared. In most studied mosquito species, we first found and identified a number of short-chain PUFA, for example, prominent 14:2n-6 and 14:3n-3, which were not earlier documented in living organisms. These PUFA, although occurred in low levels in adult mosquitoes, can be potentially used as markers of mosquito biomass in terrestrial food webs. We hypothesize that these acids might be synthesized (or retroconverted) by the mosquitoes. Using FA trophic markers accumulated in triacylglycerols, trophic relations of the mosquitoes were accessed. The larval diet comprised green algae, cryptophytes, and dinoflagellates and provided the mosquitoes with essential n-3 PUFA, linolenic, and eicosapentaenoic acids. As a result, both larvae and adults of the studied mosquitoes had comparatively high content of the essential PUFA. Comparison of FA proportions in polar lipids versus storage lipids shown that during mosquito metamorphosis transfer of essential eicosapentaenoic and arachidonic acids from the reserve in storage lipids of larvae to functional polar lipids in adults occurred. Аннотация: A mathematical model was used to investigate the effect of cannibalism intensity on the net primary production and the dynamics of trophic links in an aquatic ecosystem characterized by cannibalism at the upper trophic level. A mathematical model of an aquatic ecosystem has been constructed, with the following principal trophic links: limiting nutrient concentration, producers (phytoplankton), nonpredatory and predatory zooplankton. The model takes into account the age structure of the predator and includes two age groups (the young and adults). The adult predators are cannibals feeding on both nonpredatory zooplankton and their own young, which consume phytoplankton. It has been found that when cannibalism intensity increases above a certain level, the concentrations of both adults and the young of the predators decrease. At the same time, the concentrations of the nonpredatory zooplankton and of nutrients increase, while the biomass of producers decreases. When the cannibalism intensity is low, the net primary production of the system increases to a certain level correlated with the increase in cannibalism intensity and drops sharply when the level of consumption of young is high. There is an optimal intensity of cannibalism, at which the productivity in the photosynthesis link is maximal. В© 2003 COSPAR. Published by Elsevier Science Ltd. All rights reserved.

Аннотация: Treatment of patients with mechanical jaundice (MJ) has been one of the topical problems of current medicine. The fraction of patients having MJ of oncologic character that can undergo radical surgery does not exceed 25-30%. A way out of such situation is to use minimally invasive endobiliary interventions, the main type of which is endoprosthesis replacement of bile duct lumens. The aim of the work was to study the biological properties of the experimental models of polymer stents made of PHA for endobiliary prosthetics and to investigate the biological properties of PHA suture material for forming of biliary-enteric anastomoses (cholecystoduodenostomy). Experiments were performed on 20 adult mongrel dogs, weighing 10-12 kg. The animals were divided to three groups: the negative control group (intact animals); the positive control group (the animals with implanted endobiliary silicon stents); and the experimental group (the animals with the PHA stents). The animals were monitored for 100 days. The clinical blood analysis was made before the operation, on day 7, 30, 60 and 100 days. During autopsy the presence of exudate, commissural process in the free abdominal cavity and subhepatic spatium, the appearance of choledoch where the prosthesis was located, as well as the appearance of cholecystoenterostomy, liver and duodenum. We did not found any signs of inflammation, cicatrical changes were estimated in the free abdominal cavity and subhepatic spatium. All implanted PHA stents were at their initial places of implantation. After the end of the experiment inflammatory reaction and anastomositis were absent. Macroscopic changes of liver and duodenum were also not detected. Liver function did not have any pathological deviations. These positive results give grounds to conclude that application of PHA as endobiliary stents in reconstructive surgery of bile passages and as suture material is a promising technology. Аннотация: The taxonomic composition, seasonal dynamics, and emergence intensity of chironomid adults (the Chironomidae family) emerging from Oiskoe mountain oligotrophic lake (Western Sayan, Southern Siberia) have been established. The value of the annual emergence of chironomid adults averages 0.42 g wet weight m-2 in the lake area and approaches the value of potential emergence, which is calculated based on the estimate of zoobenthos secondary production. For the first time the fatty-acid composition and contents of essential omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) are compared between the larvae and adult stages of chironomids. The PUFA content per wet weight unit in adults is more than 7 times higher than that in larvae. The PUFA flux per lake area unit resulting from the chironomid emergence amounted to 1.752 mg m-2 y-1, which is over 10 times lower than the global estimate for the emergence of amphibiotic insects. Calculations show that the PUFA flux brought with the chironomid emergence per land unit of the studied mountain territory is very low when compared to that for other landscapes, with the exception of the shoreline part of the territory with a width of 15 m, in which the PUFA flux is comparable to that in productive landscapes. © 2016, Pleiades Publishing, Ltd.

Аннотация: 1. Aquatic systems are considered to be a main source of essential long-chain n-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA), which are preferentially synthesized by microalgae and transferred along food chains to terrestrial consumers. Emerging aquatic insects comprise a significant part of this transfer of the essential PUFA from water to land. Quantitative data on PUFA content and composition are available mainly for rheophilic insects while taxa that are characteristic of wetlands and stagnant water bodies, such as aquatic Heteroptera, remain relatively unstudied. 2. We investigated the role of various waterbug taxa (Heteroptera: Nepomorpha and Gerromorpha) inhabiting different ecoregions in temperate Central Siberia (Russia) as potential sources of PUFA. The ecoregions were steppe, forest-steppe, hemiboreal forest and montane coniferous forest. Although these waterbugs insects are aquatic in both larval and adult stages, they can disperse through the landscape and transfer essential PUFAs from water to land so making them potentially available to terrestrial consumers. 3. Species of Naucoridae, Notonectidae and Corixidae were generally dominant in all ecoregions, attaining maximum biomass in the steppe. We showed that habitat or ecoregion played a major role in the variability of fatty acid composition of Notonectidae and Gerridae but not Corixidae. In contrast, the biochemical composition of the only naucoridae, Ilyocoris cimicoides, was largely affected by life stage. 4. Both the dominant families and species within them differed with respect to their mass-specific contents of essential long-chain PUFA of the n-3 family, namely eicosapentaenoic and docosahexaenoic acids. Corixid species had the highest content of these two essential PUFAs among the waterbug studies, and relative to literature reports for other aquatic insects. Corixids thus appear to be a potentially important vector for transfer of the essential biochemical compounds from water to land, especially in steppe ecoregions with numerous ephemeral water bodies.
