Model assessment of the migration capability of transuranium radionuclides (241Am and Pu isotopes) and 152Eu in the system bottom sediments-Yenisei river water by chemical fractionation technique / L. G. Bondareva [et al.] // Radiochemistry. - 2005. - Vol. 47, Is. 4. - P415-421, DOI 10.1007/s11137-005-0112-8 . - ISSN 1066-3622
Аннотация: Sorption of radiotracers 241Am and 242Pu and weighable amounts of uranium and stable Eu on bottom sediments in the simulated system bottom sediments-Yenisei river water was studied. At a contact time of 40 min these metals are completely sorbed on the bottom sediments, presumably via association with organomineral complexes and hydrated gels. Along with sorption, these metals can form soluble complexes and stable colloids (pseudocolloids). The distribution factors of 241Am and 242Pu, and stable Eu in the simulated system between bottom sediments and liquid phases were calculated from the results of sorption experiments. The introduced 241Am and 152Eu initially present in radioactively contaminated bottom sediments of the Yenisei river show similar pattern of distribution over differently mobile fractions. The distribution of weighable amounts of stable Eu significantly differs from that of initially present 152Eu and tracer 241Am due to decelerated sorption of stable Eu and its considerably higher concentration. A significant part of 242Pu, 241Am, and 152Eu is associated with mobile fractions of bottom sediments, which, under certain environmental conditions, can pass into river water as migrating species. Аннотация: It was recently reported that radioactive fallout due to the Fukushima Nuclear Accident was detected in environmental samples collected in the USA and Greece, which are very far away from Japan. In April-May 2011, fallout radionuclides ( 134Cs, 137Cs, 131I) released in the Fukushima Nuclear Accident were detected in environmental samples at the city of Krasnoyarsk (Russia), situated in the center of Asia. Similar maximum levels of 131I and 137Cs/ 134Cs and 131I/ 137Cs ratios in water samples collected in Russia and Greece suggest the high-velocity movement of the radioactive contamination from the Fukushima Nuclear Accident and the global effects of this accident, similar to those caused by the Chernobyl accident. Аннотация: The paper summarises the results of a three-year research study (European Union Grant: INTAS 97-0519) aimed at investigating the planktonic populations and trophic organization of the Lake Shira ecosystem - a saline lake in Khakasia, Siberia. The lake exhibits a stable summer-autumn stratification of the chemical-biological components. The mechanisms responsible for the 'blooming' of phytoplankton in the deeper layers were investigated in greater detail, using data from both field and laboratory experiments. The spectra of nutrition were examined to estimate the relationships between the specific growth rates of the hydrobionts and the influence of the limiting factors: light, nutrients. The observed heterotrophic capability of a metalimnetic phytoplankton population might help explain the development in the deeper waters of Lyngbya contorta. The scheme of trophic interactions was put up, based on the assessment of the carbon pools and carbon flows in the pelagic zone of the lake. A mathematical model of the vertical structure of the lake's plankton populations was constructed, using the ecosystem description and data of vertical turbulent diffusion. The role of light and nutrient limitations and grazing mortality in forming the vertical inhomogeneities, particularly in lowering the depth of the maximal cyanobacterial biomass, has been demonstrated. The theoretical curves for the stratification of chemical and biological parameters have been brought in conformity with the field observations, e.g. for the different patterns of the peaks, and for the biomass maxima of cyanobacteria, purple and green sulphur bacteria, oxygen, and hydrogen sulphide. The calculations revealed that for an adequate assessment of the parameters for the hydrogen sulphide zone it is necessary to introduce flows of allochthonous organic matter. Based on the form of the sulphur distribution curve, the allochthonous input of organic matter and the inflow of hydrogen sulphide from the bottom have been theoretically discriminated for the first time. It has also been ascertained that irrespective of the depth the allochthonous substances limiting bacterial growth, the bacteria are uniformly distributed over depth and can serve as an indicator of the presence of limitation (the effect of autostabilisation in space). Of indisputable interest to limnology are the specific methods developed for understanding the functioning of Lake Shira ecosystem. These include the autostabilisation of the limiting factors, the on-the-spot fluorescent method of determining the three classes of microalgae, the algal mixotrophy and the planktonic population interactions and feedbacks, and development of a more sensitive, bioluminescent method for mapping the nonhomogeneities. Owing to a balanced combination of classical approaches (field observations, in situ data on production-decomposition) and the more recent ones (satellite monitoring, biophysical methods of estimating interactions of populations, mathematical models based on the field and experimental data), many of the structural-function relationships in the ecosystem can now be explained, and the models can provide 'mutual control and mutual agreement' between the data collected using different approaches.

Аннотация: Data on the seasonal changes in vertical heterogeneity of the physical-chemical and biological parameters of the thermally stratified Shira Lake ecosystem (Khakasia, Siberia) in 1996-2000 have been analyzed. The interaction mechanisms involving: (1) The plankton populations in aerobic and anaerobic zones, involving the cycling of carbon and sulphur, (2) the primary production limitation (by light and phosphorus) and inhibition (by light), and (3) the kinetic characteristics of plankton populations have been elucidated. A mathematical model of the vertical structure of the lake's plankton populations, based on the ecosystem description and on vertical turbulent diffusion of the matter, has been constructed. The green alga Dictyosphaerium tetrachotomum (Chlorophyta) and the cyanobacterium Lyngbya contorta (Cyanophyta), which dominated the phytoplankton biomass, were taken as oxygen producers. Arctodiaptomus salinus (a calanoid copepod) has been assumed as the main grazer in Shira Lake as it dominated the zooplankton biomass. Four groups of microorganisms involved in the sulphur cycle formation have been distinguished: sulphur, sulphur purple, sulphur green and SRB. H2S is oxidized to sulphate (only the green sulphur bacteria oxidize it to sulphur), and sulphate is reduced to H2S, forming neither sulphur nor its water-soluble compounds. The role of grazing, light and nutrient limitation, in forming the vertical inhomogeneities, particularly in lowering the depth of the maximal cyanobacterial biomass, has been demonstrated. When the model takes into account both light limitation and nutrient limitation of algal growth by P and consumption of algae by crustaceans: (a) in the scenario where the P is formed only by the cycling and decomposition of autochthonous organic matter, both the green algae and cyanobacteria are eliminated; (b) in the scenario involving an additional P flux in the deep water layers the peak of the cyanobacteria is at a depth of 10 m, and its amplitude is close to the one observed in the lake. The position of the peak remains stable owing to the 'double' limitation mechanism: light 'from above' and P 'from below'. Another mechanism responsible for the deep position of the peak of cyanobacteria was analyzed mathematically based on the model involving the experimentally proven assumption of the growth inhibition by light in the epilimnion and the light limitation in the hypolimnion. The main result is: the peak is positioned stable at its depth and does not change with time. The analytical and numerical calculations made for this positioning mechanism yielded the formulae relating the depth of the maximum of algal biomass, the 'width' of the peak base and the peak amplitude and a number of parameters (algae elimination, turbulent diffusion coefficient, sedimentation rate, light extinction coefficient and light intensity). The theoretical curves for the stratification of chemical and biological parameters have been brought in conformity with field observations, e.g. for the different patterns for the peaks, and the biomass maxima of cyanobacteria, purple and green sulphur bacteria, oxygen, and hydrogen sulphide. The calculations revealed that for an adequate assessment of the parameters for the hydrogen sulphide zone it is necessary to introduce flows of allochthonous organic matter. For the first time, theoretically, based on the form of the sulphur distribution curve, the allochthonous input of organic matter and the inflow of hydrogen sulphide from the bottom have been discriminated. The theoretical limit for the depth up to which the hydrogen-sulphide zone can ascend under the impact of allochthonous organic loading, has been determined.

Аннотация: The paper presents the results of biomedical investigations of sutures made of polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHAs) of two types (poly-3-hydroxybutyrate (PHB) and poly-3-hydroxybutyrate-co-poly-3-hydroxyvalerate (PHB/PHV)), synthesized by the bacteria Ralstonia eutropha B 5786 in the experiment on test animals in vivo, in comparison with silk and catgut sutures. PHB and PHB/PHV (PHBV) implants produced no adverse effect on physiological, biochemical and functional parameters of the animals during the post-surgery period. The tested PHA sutures featured the necessary strength throughout the healing period of the muscle-fascial cuts. The reaction of tissues to the implantation of PHB and PHB/PHV fibers fitted into the usual scheme characteristic of the wound process and of the reaction to a foreign-body invasion. This reaction and the reaction of tissues to silk had the similar nature and period of inflammation, but it was much less pronounced than the reaction to catgut. The tissue response to the implantation of PHAs consisted in a short-duration (up to 2 weeks) post-traumatic inflammation and the formation of a fibrous capsule less than 200 ?m thick during weeks 4-8, which in 4-6 months was reduced to 40-60 ?m in the course of reverse development. There were no adverse changes, such as suppurative inflammation, necrosis, calcification, and malignization of the cicatrice, at the site of implantation of PHA filaments, unlike in the cases with silk and catgut. In the case of PHA implantation there was a typical prolonged (throughout the post-surgery monitoring period) pronounced macrophagal stage with a large number of macrophages present. The macrophages were of the phagocytic type and multinucleate giant foreign cells, with a high activity of acid phosphomonoesterase that correlated with the activity of the enzyme in blood. Throughout the period of monitoring no differences in the tissue response to the implantation of the polymer filaments of two PHA types were recorded. В© 2003 Elsevier Science B.V. Аннотация: The time series of various parameters of satellite imagery (NDVI/EVI, temperature) during the growing season were considered in this work. This means that satellite images were considered not like a number of single scenes but like temporal sequences. Using time series enables estimating the integral phenological properties of vegetation. The basis of the developed technique is to use one of the methods of transformation of the multidimensional space in order to get the principal components. The technique is based on considering each dimension of the multidimensional space as satellite imagery for a specific date range. The technique automatically identifies spatial patterns of vegetation that are similar by phenology and growing conditions. Subsequent analysis allowed identification of the belonging of derived classes. Thus, the technique of revealing the spatial distribution of different dynamical vegetation patterns based on the phenological characteristics has been developed. The technique is based on a transformation of the multidimensional space of states of vegetation. Based on the developed technique, areas were obtained with similar interannual trends. В© 2011 SPIE.

Аннотация: A pilot model of a bio-technical life support system (BTLSS) including human and plant wastes has been developed at the Institute of Biophysics SB RAS (Krasnoyarsk, Russia). This paper describes the structure of the photosynthesizing unit of the system, which includes wheat, chufa and vegetables. The study substantiates the simultaneous use of neutral and biological substrates for cultivating plants. A novel physicochemical method for the involvement of human wastes in the cycling has been employed, which enables the use of recycled products as nutrients for plants. Inedible plant biomass was subjected to biological combustion in the soil-like substrate (SLS) and was thus involved in the system mass exchange; NaCl contained in native urine was returned to the human through the consumption of Salicornia europaea, an edible salt-concentrating plant. Mass transfer processes in the studied BLSS have been examined for different chemical components. В© 2009 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Аннотация: Application of earlier proposed ontogenetic approach to assessment of chufa (Cyperus esculentus L.) response to artificial-light culture growing conditions differing in illuminance and type of mineral nutrition is described. It was shown that, on biological soil-like substrate, plant productivity did not increase as a result of PAR level rising, and life time of chufa leaves was reduced to 11 days as compared with 18 days on the neutral substrate. Changes in the parameters of chlorophyll fluorescence induction (Fv/Fm, Yield = (Fm - Ft)/Fm, and ETR = 0.5 ? 0.84 ? Yield ? PAR) analyzed on the basis of ontogenetic approach show that it can disclose nonoptimal culture conditions. В© 2011 Pleiades Publishing, Ltd.

Based on the ontogenetic approach (analysis and comparison of the dynamics of the Chl fluorescence ratio Fp/Fs and physiological characteristics of plant leaves in ontogeny) possible criteria for the estimation of general plant resistance of photosynthetic apparatus (PSA) to prolonged stress affects are proposed. One of these criteria is the presence or absence of a steady-state phase in the dynamics of Chl fluorescence ratio Fp/Fs (or Rfd) of plant leaves after they stop growing. We also propose to use the duration of the steady-state phase and variability of Chl fluorescence ratios Rfd and Fp/Fs in this period for quantitative assessment of plant PSA resistance to prolonged stress during plant leaf ontogeny.

Аннотация: The anthropogenic impact on the Earth's ecosystems are leading to dramatic changes in ecosystem functioning and even to destruction of them. System analysis and the use of heuristic modeling can be an effective means to determine the main biological interactions and key factors that are of high importance for understanding the development of ecosystems. Cycling of limiting substances, induced by the external free energy flux, and trophic links interaction is the basis of the mathematical modeling studies presented in this paper. Mathematical models describe the dynamics of simplified ecosystems having different characteristics: 1) different degrees of biotic turnover closure (from open to completely closed); 2) different numbers of trophic links (including both "topdown", "bottom-up" regulation types); 3) different intensities of input - output flows of the limiting nutrient and its total amount in the system. Adaptive values of the changes of lower hierarchical levels (populational, trophic chain level) are to be estimated by integrity indices for total system functioning (e.g. NPP, total photosynthesis). The approach developed can be used for evaluating the contributions of lower hierarchical levels to the functioning of the higher hierarchical levels of the system. This approach may have value for determining biomanipulation management and their assessment. В© 2003 COSPAR. Published by Elsevier Science Ltd. All rights reserved.

Аннотация: The role of key environmental factors in adaptation of spore-forming and non-spore-forming transgenic microorganisms (TM) have been studied in model ecosystems. Model TM Escherichia coli Z905 (bearing plasmid genes of bacterial luminescence Ap1Lux+) has been found to have a higher adaptation potential than TM Bacillus subtilis 2335/105 (bearing genes of human ? 2-interferon Km1Inf+), planned for employment as a living vaccine under varying environmental conditions. Effects of abiotic factors on migration of natural and recombinant plasmids between microorganisms under model ecosystem conditions has been estimated. The transgenic microorganisms with low copy number survived better under introduction conditions in the microcosms studied. This trend has been shown to be independent of the microcosm type and its complexity. В© 2001 COSPAR. Published by Elsevier Science Ltd. All rights reserved.

Аннотация: An experimental approach for investigation of genetically modified microorganisms (GMMO) introduced into model ecosystems to evaluate potential risk of propagation of recombinant plasmids in surrounding medium has been developed. The object of modeling was Escherichia coli Z905 strain with a recombinant plasmid with bacterial luminescence genes, which was introduced into water microcosms of different structure. The approach involves comprehensive investigation of GMMO at four hierarchical levels: molecular (retaining the structure of the plasmid and expression of cloned genes); cellular (variation of metabolic activity); population (competitive power and metabolic interactions of GMMO with indigenous microflora, migration of recombinant and natural plasmids); ecosystem (effect of GMMO and cloned genes on ecosystem parameters). The experimental evidence and theoretical estimates are intended to form grounds to develop a basic version of an ecological certificate for different GMMO variants.

ecology -- sustable development
Аннотация: Since almost any waste recycling requires non-zero resources, almost any technology exerts non-zero impact on the biosphere. Therefore, there is an objective of finding technological configuration providing a minimal harmful effect on the biosphere. Correct assessment of the harmful effect requires as broad a framework of consideration as possible. A comparison of ecological impacts of gasoline and electric vehicles was conducted as an example of applying this approach. The contribution of technological processes involved into production, usage, and disposal of vehicles was taken into account. Comparison of the total environmental impact of the vehicles has led to a result that differs radically from widely distributed points of view about the environmental benefits of electric vehicles. It indicates that the use of the proposed approach can significantly change perceptions about the environmental and economic efficiency of various industrial products and processes. Аннотация: A new method to define the interaction within microbial communities of natural bacterio- and phytoplankton is suggested. It consists in finding of theoretical and experimental values of intra- and interpopulation interaction coefficients (ICs). Their comparison gives a degree of completeness of information on the regulation factors. This approach was tested for two Siberian water bodies.
