Аннотация: The transfer of transuranium element americium-241 (241Am) from food and water to organs and tissues of freshwater fish (Carassius auratus gibelio, crucian carp) has been investigated in laboratory experiments. The fishes were fed with homogenized biomass of submerged macrophytes labeled with 241Am, through catheter. For the first two days after force-feeding, fishes excreted up to 80% of ingested americium, for four days - 98%. 241Am was registered in internal organs and tissues that had no direct contact with americium (liver, bones, muscles) as early as two days after the feeding and after eight days, when the digestive tract was depurated. Among internal organs, the highest activity concentration was recorded in the liver (up to 427 Bq/kg). Activity concentration in bones (19-31 Bq/kg) was several times higher than in muscles, indicating the affinity of americium to bone tissue. Assimilation of 241Am in organs and tissues of crucian carp from water occurred mainly via the digestive tract too. В© 2011 EDP Sciences.

Understanding the trophic relationships of consumers is central to ecology, but constructing meaningful food webs is often difficult because of a lack of detailed information on consumption versus assimilation and high degrees of omnivory.2. We used fatty acid analyses to examine the trophic relationships of three common larval anurans (Pseudacris crucifer, Lithobates catesbeianus and Lithobates clamitans) that are often classified as grazers or detritivores. Tadpoles and potential food sources were sampled in four ponds in southern Illinois and analysed for fatty acid composition. Single linkage cluster analysis was then used to compare fatty acid profiles among tadpole gut contents, tadpole muscle tissues and available food resources.3. Diets varied among species and within species among ponds, but organic sediments consistently contributed most to the fatty acid composition of the gut contents of all species. Fatty acid profiles also indicated that larval insects and phytoplankton were consumed by both L. catesbeianus and L. clamitans in one pond, while L. clamitans and P. crucifer consumed mainly periphyton along with sediments in another pond, and these diet differences appeared linked to physical differences among ponds, with periphyton and/or phytoplankton contributing more to tadpole diets in less shaded ponds.4. The fatty acid composition of muscle tissues of L. clamitans, the dominant tadpole in these systems, indicated that plant detritus and bacteria, which were the dominant components of organic sediments in the ponds, were common components of the assimilatory diet.5. Results demonstrate the utility of fatty acid analyses for assessing both consumption and assimilation. The tadpole assemblages we examined derive much of their energy from heterotrophic and allochthonous sources and exhibit high dietary plasticity. This information will allow for more accurate and comprehensive assessments of trophic interactions in freshwater habitats, as well as aid in amphibian conservation, management and captive propagation efforts. Аннотация: We studied how chemicals obtained as filtrates from algal monocultures (algal chemicals) and from rotifer cultures with or without algae (rotifer chemicals) affected feeding rates of the rotifer Brachionus calyciflorus on its food algae, both directly and indirectly (through chemical-induced changes in algal morphology). Algal chemicals had a strong stimulating effect on the feeding rate of B. calyciflorus, but these effects were counteracted by rotifer chemicals. In functional response experiments, rotifer chemicals lowered maximum ingestion rates and had strong effects on assimilation rates and assimilation efficiencies of B. calyciflorus, probably due to the release of unspecific (auto)toxic metabolites. Furthermore, rotifer chemicals induced colony formation in the food alga Scenedesmus obliquus. Above the optimum particle size for ingestion by B. calyciflorus, larger algal colony sizes increased the food-handling time, thus lowering ingestion and assimilation rates. Through their effects on trophic interactions, infochemicals may play a role in structuring and the functioning of aquatic food webs. Аннотация: Food spectrum of microzooplancton in fresh-water ecological systems is lowly studied area. However, these organisms play very important role in transfer of substance and energy in water reservoirs. Traditional method of analysis of food in the microzooplancton does not makes it possible to determine real assimilation of organic substance. Therefore, biochemical methods have been developed which are based on analysis of compositions of fatty acids of organic substance. This leads to determining of the food assimilation. Fatty-acid compositions of lipids allow specialists to determine specific groups of organisms such as bacteria, microalgae etc. Data of the analysis are presented.

Аннотация: Gas exchange between man and plants in a closed ecological system based on atmosphere regeneration by plant photosynthesis is made consistent by attaining the equilibrium of human CO2 discharge and the productivity of the gas consuming bioregenerator. In this case the gas exchange might be, however, qualitatively disturbed from the equilibrium in terms of oxygen making it accumulate or decrease continuously in the air of the system. Gas exchange equilibrium in terms of O2 was attained in long-term experiments by equality of the human respiration coefficient and the plant assimilation coefficient. Varying the ratio of these parameters it is possible to control the oxygen concentration in the atmosphere to be reclaimed.

Аннотация: The bioaccumulation of actinide Am-241 from food and water in bodies of freshwater fish (Carassius auratus gibelio, silver crucian carp) has been investigated in laboratory experiments. Homogenized biomass of submerged macrophytes labeled with Am-241 was injected into the fish gullet. Internal organs and tissues of crucian carp could be ranked according to activity concentration of dietary Am-241 after depuration of the digestive tract as follows: liver > gonads > bones > muscles. Accumulation of waterborne Am-241 in internal organs and tissues of crucian carp mainly occurred via the digestive tract. While the concentration of Am-241 in liver of crucian carps decreased during depuration time, its concentration in bones increased indicating slower transfer of Am-241 to skeleton compared to muscles and liver. The retention of dietary Am-241 in the bodies of crucian carp reached 35%-46% of ingested Am-241: 20%-31% was retained in liver, 0.6%-0.8% in skeleton, and 1.4%-2.0% in muscles. The concentration factor of Am-241 from water was 0.4 for the whole body, 0.3 for liver, 0.01 for muscles, and 0.01 for skeleton. Trace amounts of Am-241 were recorded in viscera and muscles of a wild population of silver crucian carp inhabiting a radioactively contaminated part of the Yenisei River.

Аннотация: We tested a comparatively new method of tracing of natural food webs, compound-specific isotope analysis (CSIA) of fatty acids (FA), using laboratory culture of Daphnia galeata fed Chlorella vulgaris and Cryptomonas sp. In general, Daphnia had significantly lighter carbon stable isotope composition of most fatty acids, including essential, than those of their food, microalgae. Thus, our results did not support the pivotal premise of the FA-CSIA application for food web analysis, i.e., transmitting the isotope 'signal' of essential FAs to consumers from their food without any modification. Moreover, the values of isotope fractionation of particular FAs in the consumer relative to its food were not constant, but varied from 1.35‰ to 7.04‰. The different isotope fractionation (depletion) values of diverse FAs in consumer were probably caused by different processes of their synthesis, catabolism and assimilation. More work is evidently to be done for correct interpretation of results of FA-CSIA during field studies for tracing of natural food webs. © 2015 Elsevier GmbH.

Аннотация: Presently, the most promising way of studying, forecasting, and enhancing of organisms' tolerance to harsh environmental impacts is considered to be the estimation of initial functional state of an organism's regulatory systems. To resolve the problem of photosynthetic apparatus (PSA) tolerance to harsh impacts at the level of such a complicated functional system as a plant leaf, it is necessary to assess integral responses of the leaf's PSA to the impact. At that, simple and versatile traits may have certain advantages. At present, chlorophyll fluorescence seems to be one of the main indices of PSA activity, which can be measured relatively fast and easy. One of the possible approaches to operational integrative assessment of PSA activity may consist in usage of the parameters introduced for the curves of chlorophyll fluorescence induction (CFI) slow phase. Temporal patterns of CFI are of special interest. The simplest index T-0.5 (i.e., half-time of chlorophyll fluorescence intensity decrease during the slow phase of CFI) appears to be an integral characteristic of activation rate with regard to a number of photo-assimilation and photo-protective processes in leaves. On basis of the studies, conducted earlier, and published data, we have analyzed the behavior of T-0.5 parameter with comparison to other CFI traits (namely: qN - non-photochemical quenching coefficient, ETR - electron transport rate, Phi(PSII) - effective quantum yield of PSII photochemistry, F-p/F-T ratio) under different conditions. The influence of leaf senescence, changes in intensity of excitation light, slight dehydration of plants and their recovery from water deficiency have been examined. The pattern of T-0.5 behavior, observed in laboratory experiments, and the results of its comparison with other indices of CFI give occasion to propose the usage of T-0.5 for indirect estimation of PSA activity when operational integrative monitoring of PSA state is required. Further studies are necessary for establishing quantitative relationships between PSA activity and fluorescence parameter T-0.5 under specific stress conditions.
