Аннотация: The source of radioactive contamination of the Yenisei River floodplain, including contamination with transuranic elements, is the Mining-and-Chemical Combine of the Russian Ministry of Atomic Energy, which has for many years been producing weapons-grade plutonium. Transuranic elements have been detected not only in the soil and sediment of the river but also in the biomass of aquatic plants. This work is an investigation of accumulation and release of 241Am by a submerged macrophyte of the Yenisei River (Elodea canadensis) in laboratory experiments. In 2000-2003, laboratory experiments were carried out with biomass of E. canadensis Mich. and filtered river water. The samples were collected from the Yenisei River upstream of the discharge of the Combine's radioactive effluent. The experiments showed that 241Am is accumulated by Elodea biomass: the activity concentration of 241Am can reach 3280 В± 240 Bq/g, with the concentration factor for 241Am 16 600 В± 2200 l/kg. Results of chemical fractionation have proved that in the course of 241Am accumulation by Elodea biomass, 241Am tightly bound to biomass increases from 11% to 27% of the total 241Am in the biomass. Release of 241Am from the decaying Elodea biomass has been evaluated experimentally. By the end of the experiment (lasting up to 127 days), the Elodea plants had lost up to 65% of their initial 241Am activity and the rate of 241Am release into the water environment reached 23 Bq/day. Аннотация: The Yenisei River, one of the largest rivers in the world, is contaminated with artificial radionuclides released by a Russian nuclear facility producing weapon-grade plutonium, which has been in operation for many years. Examination of Yenisei River sediment samples revealed the presence of artificial radionuclides typical of radioactive discharge from the Mining-and-Chemical- Combine (MCC) nuclear facility: isotopes of europium ( 152Eu, 154Eu, and 155Eu), caesium ( 137Cs and 134Cs), 60Co, 90Sr, and transuranium elements. Maximum radionuclide concentrations in sediments remained high as far as 240 km downstream of the MCC. In sediment cores collected upstream of the MCC, ?-spectrometric measurements registered only one artificial radionuclide, 137Cs, with a maximum activity of approx. 8 Bq kg -1 dry mass. Sediments of the Yenisei River also contain natural radionuclides. Sedimentation rates in several sections of the Yenisei River were determined using, different approaches: the 210Pb dating method and the ratios of artificial radionuclides - 137Cs/ 60Co and 152Eu/ 154Eu. With increasing distance downstream of the city of Krasnoyarsk, sedimentation rates increased from 0.88 cm year -1 to 1.30-1.51 cm year -1. Copyright В© 2010 IAHS Press.

Аннотация: A feature of meromictic lakes is that several physicochemical and biological gradients affect the vertical distribution of different organisms. The vertical stratification of physical, chemical and biological components in saline, fishless meromictic lakes Shira and Shunet (Siberia, Russia) is quite different mainly because both mean depth and maximum depth of lakes differ as well as their salinity levels differ. The chemocline of the Lake Shira, as in many meromictic lakes, is inhabited by bacterial community consisting of purple sulphur and heterotrophic bacteria. As the depth of the chemocline is variable, the bacterial community does not attain high densities. The mixolimnion in Lake Shira, which is thermally stratified in summer, also creates different habitat for various species. The distribution of phytoplankton is non-uniform with its biomass peak in the metalimnion. The distribution of zooplankton is also heterogeneous with rotifers and juvenile copepods inhabiting the warmer epilimnion and older copepods found in the cold but oxic hypolimnion. The amphipod Gammarus lacustris which can be assigned to the higher trophic link in the fishless lake's ecosystem, such as Lake Shira, is also distributed non-uniformly, with its peak density generally observed in the thermocline region. The chemocline in Lake Shunet is located at the depth of 5 m, and unlike in Lake Shira, due to a sharp salinity gradient between the mixolimnion and monimolimnion, this depth is very stable. The mixolimnion in Lake Shunet is relatively shallow and the chemocline is inhabited by (1) an extremely dense bacterial community; (2) a population of Cryptomonas sp.; and (3) ciliate community comprising several species. As the mixolimnion of Lake Shunet is not thermally stratified for long period, the phytoplankton and zooplankton populations are not vertically stratified. The gammarids, however, tend to concentrate in a narrow layer located 1-2 m above the chemocline. We believe that in addition to vertical inhomogeneities of both physicochemical parameters, biological and physical factors also play a role in maintaining these inhomogeneities. We conclude that the stratified distributions of the major food web components will have several implications for ecosystem structure and dynamics. Trophic interactions as well as mass and energy flows can be significantly impacted by such heterogeneous distributions. Species spatially separated even by relatively short distances, say a few centimetres will not directly compete. Importantly, we demonstrate that not only bacteria, phytoflagellates and ciliate tend to concentrate in thin layers but also larger-sized species such Gammarus (amphipods) can also under certain environmental conditions have stratified distribution with maxima in relatively thin layer. As the vertical structure of the lake ecosystem is rather complex in such stratified lakes as ours, the strategy of research, including sampling techniques, should consider potentially variable and non-homogeneous distributions. Аннотация: The study addresses the ability of luminous bacteria of different taxa (Photobacterium leiognathi, Photobacterium phosphoreum, Vibrio harveyi, Vibrio fischeri) to synthesize polyesters of hydrocarbon acids (polyhydroxyalkanoates, PHAs) as storage macromolecules. The screened strains widely varied in their PHA productivity. Conditions for attaining high polymer yields (including two- and three-component polymers) in batch culture have been determined. The attained polymer yields reached 40-70% of dry cell biomass. The results suggest a conclusion that luminous microorganisms can be considered as producers of multi-component PHAs. Аннотация: Physiological-biochemical, genetic, and cultural properties of the glucose-utilizing mutant strain Ralstonia eutropha B8562 have been compared with those of its parent strain R. eutropha B5786. It has been shown that growth characteristics of the strain cultured on glucose as the sole carbon and energy source are comparable with those of the parent strain. Strain B8562 is characterized by high polyhydroxyalkanoate (PHA) yields on different carbon sources (CO2, fructose, and glucose). PHA accumulation in the strain batch cultured on glucose under nitrogen deficiency reaches 90 %. The major monomer in the PHA is ?-hydroxybutyric acid (more than 99 mol %); the identified minor components are ?-hydroxyvaleric acid (0.25-0.72 mol %) and ?-hydroxyhexanoic acid (0.08-1.5 mol %). The strain is a promising PHA producer on available sugar-containing media with glucose. В© Springer-Verlag 2006.

Аннотация: Samples of a hybrid composite of polyhydroxybutyrate (PHB), a biodegradable polyester, and hydroxyapatite (HA), with different PHB/HA ratios, have been prepared using mechanical-physical method. Electron microscopy, X-ray structure analysis and differential thermal analysis have been used to investigate the structure and physicochemical properties of the composite, depending on the PHB/HA ratio. The properties of the surface of the HA-loaded composite are significantly different from those of the pure polymer. As the HA percentage in the composite increases, free interface energy, the cohesive force, i.e., the strength of the adhesive bond between the composite surface and the water phase, and surface wettability increase. The HA percentage of the composite does not influence its melting temperature, but affects the temperature for the onset of decomposition: as the HA content increases from 0 to 10% (w/w), Td decreases from 260В°C to 225В°C. The degree of crystallinity of PHB/HA increases from 77% to 89% with an increase in the HA fraction from 10% to 50%. Functional properties of the composites have been investigated in vitro and in vivo. The best parameters of growth and differentiation of murine marrow osteoblasts are registered on PHB/HA samples containing 10% and 20% HA. In ectopic bone formation assay it has been proven that the hybrid PHB/HA composites can function as scaffolds and that bone tissue develops on their surface and in pores. В© VSP 2006.

Аннотация: The dielectric permeability of the degradable biopolymer polyhydroxybutyrate synthesized by hydrogen-oxidizing bacteria Alcaligenes eutrophus was investigated by the resonance method using original highly sensitive microstrip sensors. For the first time, a linear growth of dielectric permeability (delta epsilon/delta T = 7 x 10(-4) degree-1) due to the flexibility of the polymer chain in the temperature range from 10 to 70 degrees C was revealed. The energy of a bend of the nearest fragments was evaluated (E = 392 K), and its correspondence to the energies of bends of the alcyl groups of low-molecular substances like liquid crystals was established. It was shown that at low values of dielectric permeability in the high-frequency range (epsilon' = 2.25 +/- 0.02), which are stable, in a wide range of frequencies of the electromagnetic field (1 MHz - 1 Hz), polyoxybutyrate can be used in the microwave equipment.

Аннотация: One of the central paradigms of ecology is that only about 10% of organic carbon production of one trophic level is incorporated into new biomass of organisms of the next trophic level. Many of energy-yielding compounds of carbon are designated as 'essential', because they cannot be synthesized de novo by consumers and must be obtained with food, while they play important structural and regulatory functions. The question arises: are the essential compounds transferred through trophic chains with the same efficiency as bulk carbon? To answer this question, we measured gross primary production of phytoplankton and secondary production of zooplankton and content of organic carbon and essential polyunsaturated fatty acids of ?-3 family with 18-22 carbon atoms (PUFA) in the biomass of phytoplankton and zooplankton in a small eutrophic reservoir during two summers. Transfer efficiency between the two trophic levels, phytoplankton (producers) and zooplankton (consumers), was calculated as ratio of the primary production versus the secondary (zooplankton) production for both carbon and PUFA. We found that the essential PUFA were transferred from the producers to the primary consumers with about twice higher efficiency than bulk carbon. In contrast, polyunsaturated fatty acids with 16 carbon atoms, which are synthesized exclusively by phytoplankton, but are not essential for animals, had significantly lower transfer efficiency than both bulk carbon, and essential PUFA. Thus, the trophic pyramid concept, which implicitly implies that all the energy-yielding compounds of carbon are transferred from one trophic level to the next with the same efficiency of about on average 10%, should be specified for different carbon compounds. Аннотация: 1. Understanding the trophic relationships of consumers is central to ecology, but constructing meaningful food webs is often difficult because of a lack of detailed information on consumption versus assimilation and high degrees of omnivory.2. We used fatty acid analyses to examine the trophic relationships of three common larval anurans (Pseudacris crucifer, Lithobates catesbeianus and Lithobates clamitans) that are often classified as grazers or detritivores. Tadpoles and potential food sources were sampled in four ponds in southern Illinois and analysed for fatty acid composition. Single linkage cluster analysis was then used to compare fatty acid profiles among tadpole gut contents, tadpole muscle tissues and available food resources.3. Diets varied among species and within species among ponds, but organic sediments consistently contributed most to the fatty acid composition of the gut contents of all species. Fatty acid profiles also indicated that larval insects and phytoplankton were consumed by both L. catesbeianus and L. clamitans in one pond, while L. clamitans and P. crucifer consumed mainly periphyton along with sediments in another pond, and these diet differences appeared linked to physical differences among ponds, with periphyton and/or phytoplankton contributing more to tadpole diets in less shaded ponds.4. The fatty acid composition of muscle tissues of L. clamitans, the dominant tadpole in these systems, indicated that plant detritus and bacteria, which were the dominant components of organic sediments in the ponds, were common components of the assimilatory diet.5. Results demonstrate the utility of fatty acid analyses for assessing both consumption and assimilation. The tadpole assemblages we examined derive much of their energy from heterotrophic and allochthonous sources and exhibit high dietary plasticity. This information will allow for more accurate and comprehensive assessments of trophic interactions in freshwater habitats, as well as aid in amphibian conservation, management and captive propagation efforts. Аннотация: Electronic states of nanodiamond (ND) were investigated by PEELS, XPS and CKVV Auger spectra. Parallel electron energy loss spectra (PEELS) show that the electrons inside of ND particles are sp3 hybridized but there is a surface layer containing distinct hybridized states. The CKVV Auger spectra imply that the HOMO of the ND surface has a shift of 2.5eV from natural diamond levels of ?p up to the Fermi level. Hydrogen (H) treatment of natural diamond surface produces a chemical state indistinguishable from that of ND surfaces using CKVV. The ND electronic structure forms ?s1?p2?1 surface states without overlapping of ?-levels. Surface electronic states, including surface plasmons, as well as phonon-related electronic states of the ND surface are also interesting and may also be important for field emission mechanisms from the nanostructured diamond surface. Аннотация: The rough surface of nano-crystalline diamond spheres induces surface electronic states which appear as a broadened pre-peak over approx. 15 eV at the C K-edge energy threshold for carbon in the parallel electron energy loss spectrum (PEELS). This appears to be at least partially due to 1s-?* transitions, although typically the latter occupy a range of only 4 eV for the sp2 edge of highly-oriented pyrollytic graphite (HOPG). No ?* electrons appear in the conduction band inside the diamond particles, where all electrons are sp3 hybridized. PEELS data were also obtained from a chemical vapour deposited diamond film (CVDF) and gem-quality diamond for comparison with the spectra of nano-diamonds. The density of Sp2 and Sp3 states on the surface of diamond nano-crystals is calculated for simple structural models of the diamond balls, including some conjecture about surface structures. The results are used to interpret the sp2/sp3 ratios measured from the PEELS spectra recorded as scans across the particles. Surface roughness at the atomic scale was also examined using high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM) and electron nano-diffraction patterns were used to confirm the crystal structures.

Аннотация: The properties of field electron emission for diamond/pyrocarbon nanocomposites produced from diamond particles surrounded by a pyrocarbon matrix were studied. Low-threshold emissions at fields of ?1 V/?m with no activation or hysterisis in the current versus voltage (I/V) behaviour were observed for the materials. Scanning tunneling-field emission microscopy was used to study the mechanisms of low-field electron emission from the composites, and a model based on quantum well effect at the diamond/graphite interface was proposed and discussed.

Аннотация: The surface properties of diamond nanoparticles (40-50 A in diameter) have been investigated by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), UV photoelectron spectroscopy (UPS) and Raman spectroscopy. The diamond nanoparticles have been deposited on flat Si(100) substrates by electrophoresis/dielectrophoresis. The as-deposited films are strongly oxidized and present a 1-2% nitrogen content. After treatment at 850 В°C in H2 plasma for 60 min, the oxygen is removed, and the position of the C 1s core-level peak indicates a n-type electronic comportment of the diamond nanoparticles. Raman spectroscopy of the as-deposited film shows a sp3 contribution at 1321 cm-1 and a sp2 contribution around 1620 cm-1. The 12 cm-1 shift of the sp3 contribution with respect to the bulk diamond peak at 1333 cm-1 is attributed to a phonon confinement effect due to the size of the diamond particles. The H2 plasma treatment induces a size decrease of the nanocrystallites confirmed by Raman and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) measurements. UPS spectroscopy shows a negative electron affinity of -0.2 eV of the hydrogenated nanodiamond film.

Аннотация: The method of atom-atom potentials has been used to study the glutamyl dipeptide in ionized (glu-) and non-ionized (glu) states. A calculation has been made with a computer of the conformational maps and the statistical sums of glu and glu-. It was found that on transition of glu > glu- fall in the energy exceeds the free energy of initiation of the helix with an increased probability of the helical state of the molecule of glu-. From this it is concluded that glu- may in certain conditions be the embryo of the helix on self-organization of protein. В© 1975.

Аннотация: One of the ways of solving the problem of the human liquid wastes utilization in bioregenerative life support systems (BLSS) can be the use of halophytic vegetable plant Salicornia europaea capable of accumulating sodium chloride in rather high concentrations. Since the most specific higher plant function in BLSS, which at present cannot be substituted by physicochemical processes, appears to be the biosynthesis of a wide spectrum of nutritive substances necessary for a human, the object of the given work was the investigation of the S. europaea productivity, biochemical and mineral composition when grown under close to optimal BLSS vegetative component conditions. As the use of human urine after its preliminary physicochemical processing is supposed to be the mineral solution basis for the S. europaea cultivation, it is necessary to clear up the effect of reduced nitrogen on plants growth. Ground research was carried out. Biochemical composition of the S. europaea edible part showed that crude protein was contained in the highest degree. At that the content of crude protein (24% per dry weight) and cellulose (4.7% per dry weight) was higher in the plants grown on solutions containing amide nitrogen in comparison with the plants grown on solutions with nitrate nitrogen (15.4%-3.1% correspondingly). The water-soluble sugar contents were not high in the S. europaea edible part and depending on the nitrogen nutrition form they amounted to 1.1% (amide nitrogen) and 1.5% (nitrate nitrogen). The polysaccharide number (except cellulose) was rather higher and varied from 7.7% to 8.2%. Although the lipid content in the S. europaea plants was relatively low (7% per dry weight), it was shown that the plant lipids are characterized by a high nonsaturation degree mainly due to alpha linolenic and linoleic acids. Nitrogen nutrition form did not significantly affect the S. europaea productivity, and dry edible biomass of one plant was 8.6 g. Sodium and its concentrations predominated in the plant mineral composition and amounted in average to 9% per dry weight. Thus the S. europaea being the vegetable plant it can be the source of several biochemical substances and essential fatty acids. The present work also considers the influence of nitrate and amide forms of nitrogen on S. europaea biochemical and mineral composition. В© 2008 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Аннотация: The purpose of this study is to estimate the possible effect produced on plant productivity by inedible plant biomass added to soil-like substrate (SLS). Results of the experiments with radish plants grown on the SLS with inedible biomass of carrot and beet plants added in the amounts roughly equal to their yields harvested from the same area showed a significant reduction in productivity of radish plants. The yield of radish plants grown on the SLS with added radish tops was almost the same as the yield of the radish grown on the neutral substrate. Experiments with addition of dry wheat straw to the SLS and growing of wheat and radish plants on that substrate also showed that the productivity of the plants grown in that way was decreased. Attempts to negate the adverse effect of plant wastes proved that the most effective way was to mineralize the wastes using the technique of "wet incineration". В© 2008 Elsevier Ltd.
