Evidence for two abrupt warming events of SST in the last century / C. A. Varotsos [et al.] // Theoretical and Applied Climatology. - 2013. - P1-10, DOI 10.1007/s00704-013-0935-8 . - ISSN 0177-798X
Аннотация: We have recently suggested that the warming in the sea surface temperature (SST) since 1900, did not occur smoothly and slowly, but with two rapid shifts in 1925/1926 and 1987/1988, which are more obvious over the tropics and the northern midlatitudes. Apart from these shifts, most of the remaining SST variability can be explained by the El Nino Southern Oscillation and the Pacific Decadal Oscillation (PDO). Here, we provide evidence that the timing of these two SST shifts (around 60В years) corresponds well to the quasi-periodicity of many natural cycles, like that of the PDO, the global and Northern Hemisphere annual mean temperature, the Atlantic Multi-decadal Oscillation, the Inter-Tropical Convergence Zone, the Southwest US Drought data, the length of day, the air surface temperature, the Atlantic meridional overturning circulation and the change in the location of the centre of mass of the solar system. In addition, we show that there exists a strong seasonal link between SST and ENSO over the tropics and the NH midlatitudes, which becomes stronger in autumn of the Northern Hemisphere. Finally, we found that before and after each SST shift, the intrinsic properties of the SST time series obey stochastic dynamics, which is unaffected by the modulation of these two shifts. In particular, the SST fluctuations for the time period between the two SST shifts exhibit 1/f-type long-range correlations, which are frequently encountered in a large variety of natural systems. Our results have potential implications for future climate shifts and crossing tipping points due to an interaction of intrinsic climate cycles and anthropogenic greenhouse gas emissions. Аннотация: Kinetic indices of growth, polyhydroxyalkanoate (PHA) accumulation, and gas exchange have been studied in a culture of the carbon monoxide-resistant hydrogen strain Ralstonia eutropha B-5786 grown on a gaseous substrate (GS) obtained by lignite gasification. The GS was shown to be suitable for PHA production. To increase the degree of GS consumption, various modes of gas supply to the culture were tested. Based on the results, an algorithm was developed for calculating and controlling gas-exchange parameters in the PHA-accumulating culture of Ralstonia eutropha, grown on a new GS allowing high polymer yields (up to 75%) and degrees of the substrate utilization (up to 90%).

Аннотация: Samples of olyhydroxyalkanoates (PHAs), polyhydroxybutyrate (PHB) and copolymers poly(hydroxybutyrate-co-hydroxyvalerate) (PHBV) with 4 and 18 mol% hydroxyvalerate, synthesized by the bacteria Ralstonia eutropha B5786, were investigated. PHA films in contact with blood did not activate the hemostasis system at the level of cell response, but they did activate the coagulation system and the complement reaction. To detect biologically-active components in the PHAs, a detailed analysis of the composition of the polymers was conducted. Gas chromatography-mass spectrometry revealed long-chain fatty acids (FAs) in the tested PHAs. Their total concentration in the polymer ranged from tenths of mol% to 2-3 mol%, depending on the purification method. C16:0 constituted the largest proportion, up to 70%. Of the long-chain hydroxy acids, only ?-OH-C14:0 was detected and it did not exceed 0.06 mol%. The analysis of the hemocompatibility properties of the PHAs purified by a specialized procedure, including the quantitative and morphological estimation of platelets adherent to the surface of polymer films, the plasma recalcification time and complement activation studies, indicated that PHB and PHBV can be used in contact with blood. It has been found out that the lipopolysaccharides of bacteria producing PHAs, which contain mostly long-chain hydroxy acids, can be the factor activating the hemostasis systems. Thus, the technology of PHA purification must satisfy rather stringent specific requirements.

Аннотация: It has been found that the carbon monoxide (CO)-resistant strain of the hydrogen bacteria Ralstonia eutropha B5786 is able to synthesise polyhydroxy-alkanoates (PHAs) in the presence of CO under autotrophic conditions. This strain, grown on model gas mixtures containing 5-25% CO (v/v), accumulates up to 70-75% (of absolutely dry matter) PHA, without significant variation in the yield coefficient on hydrogen. No suppression of the activities of the key enzymes of PHA synthesis (?-ketothiolase, acetoacetyl-CoA-reductase, butyrate dehydrogenase and poly-3-hydroxybutyrate synthase) was recorded. The PHA synthesised is a copolymer containing mostly ?-hydroxybutyrate (more than 99 mol%) with trace amounts of ?-hydroxyvalerate. The investigated properties of the polymer (molecular weight, crystallinity, temperature characteristics) do not differ from those of the polymer synthesised on electrolytic hydrogen.

CO inhibition -- Hydrogen-oxidizing bacteria -- Polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHAs) -- Synthesis
Аннотация: The CO-resistant strain B5786 of the hydrogen-oxidizing bacterium Alcaligenes eutrophus was found to be able to synthesize polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHAs) under the conditions of growth limitation by nitrogen deficiency (the factor that promotes PHA synthesis) and growth inhibition by carbon monoxide. The gas mixtures that contained from 5 to 20 vol % CO did not inhibit the key enzymes of PHA synthesis-?-ketothiolase, acetoacetyl-CoA reductase, hydroxybutyrate dehydrogenase, and PHA synthase. In the presence of CO, cells accumulated up to 70-75 wt % PHA (with respect to the dry biomass) without any noticeable increase in the consumption of the gas substrate. Chromatographic-mass spectrometric analysis showed that the PHA synthesized by A. eutrophus is a copolymer containing more than 99 mol % ?-hydroxybutyrate and trace amounts of ?-hydroxyvalerate. The PHA synthesized under the conditions described did not differ from that synthesized by A. eutrophus cells from electrolytic hydrogen. В© 2001 MAIK "Nauka/Interperiodica".

Аннотация: In 11 lakes from cold and warm regions we studied the content of highly unsaturated fatty acids (HUFA) in seston (<130?m) and crustacean zooplankton using gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. An increase of temperature correlated with a decrease of HUFA content in zooplankton. A multivariate canonical correlation analyses revealed, that the decrease of HUFA content was related with a decrease of per cent of copepods in zooplankton communities, which are known to have higher HUFA levels in their biomass, than cladocerans. This means that temperature primarily affected the HUFA levels indirectly, via changing of taxonomic structure of zooplankton community, while the homeoviscous adaptation of zooplankton individuals had comparatively lower importance. As found, water temperature was better predictor of HUFA contents of zooplankton, than the fatty acid composition of seston. Thus, it can be predicted, that a probable climate warming will decrease the content of the essential HUFA in freshwater zooplankton with possible negative consequences for animals of higher trophic levels. Аннотация: Identification of lipid fatty acids (FA) and studying of their seasonal dynamics in water moss Fontinalis antipyretica from the Yenisei River were carried out by means of gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. FA composition of water moss was notable for a relatively low level of saturated acids and predominance of polyunsaturated acids (PUFA) with double bonds (accounting for more than 30% of total FA) and polyunsaturated acids with double and triple bonds (acetylenic acids, accounting for more than 40% of total FA). Among PUFA, ?- and ?-linolenic (18:3?3 and 18:3?6), arachidonic (20:4?6), and eicosapentaenoic (20:5?3) acids prevailed. Relative content of PUFA from ?3-family was the greatest in spring, and the level of PUFA from ?6-group was essentially the same throughout all the seasons. In the biomass of water moss, we identified seven acetylenic acids; among them octadeca-9,12-dien-6-ynoic (6a,9,12-18:3), octadeca-9,12,15-trien-6-ynoic (6a,9,12,15-18:4), and eicosa-11,14-dien-8-ynoic (8a,11,14-20:3) acids were predominant. For the first time, in the lipids of water moss we identified an acetylenic eicosa-11,14,17-trien-8-ynoic acid (8a,11,14,15-20:4). Relative content of acetylenic acids in the total FA was great throughout the entire period of investigation with the peak accumulation in summer. Owing to a steadily high level in the biomass of water moss and the lack of other producers of these acids in the ecosystem, acetylenic FA are highly specific biochemical markers useful for the investigation of trophic interactions between higher aquatic plants and zoobenthos. Аннотация: Three canned fish species - Pacific saury (Cololabis saira), Pacific herring (Clupea harengus) and Baltic sprat (Sprattus sprattus) - most common and popular in Russia, were analyzed for fatty acids. Special attention was paid to long-chain essential polyunsaturated fatty acids: eicosapentaenoic acid (20:5?3) and docosahexaenoic acid (22:6?3). Sums of eicosapentaenoic acid and docosahexaenoic acid in saury, herring and sprat were, on average, 2.42, 1.80 and 1.43 g/100 g product, respectively. Contents of these essential acids in all the canned fish species were found to be very high compared with many other fish reported in the available literature. All the canned fish appeared to be highly valuable products for human nutrition concerning the content of eicosapentaenoic and docosahexaenoic acids.

Аннотация: The reaction of algae and cyano-bacteria photosynthetic apparatus on atmospheric sediments, incident solar radiation and wind velocity was estimated by measuring chlorophyll fluorescence using three-beam fluorescent diagnostics. As shown, wind in the spring positively affects the chlorophyll concentration but causes negative effect on phytoplankton photosynthetic activity in other seasons. Under conditions of high-intensity solar irradiation confervoid and colonial cyanobacteria, possessing gas vacuoles, have an advantage over plankton eukaryotic algae. Аннотация: The main objective of a life support system for space missions is to supply a crew with food, water and oxygen, and to eliminate their wastes. The ultimate goal is to achieve the highest degree of closure of the system using controlled processes offering a high level of reliability and flexibility. Enhancement of closure of a biological life support system (BLSS) that includes plants relies on increased regeneration of plant waste, and utilization of solid and liquid human wastes. Clearly, the robustness of a BLSS subjected to stress will be substantially determined by the robustness of the plant components of the phototrophic unit. The aim of the present work was to estimate the heat resistance of two plants (wheat and lettuce) grown on human wastes. Human exometabolites mineralized by hydrogen peroxide in an electromagnetic field were used to make a nutrient solution for the plants. We looked for a possible increase in the heat tolerance of the wheat plants using changes in photosynthetically active radiation (PAR) intensity during heat stress. At age 15 days, plants were subjected to a rise in air temperature (from 23 В± 1 В°C to 44 В± 1 В°) under different PAR intensities for 4 h. The status of the photosynthetic apparatus of the plants was assessed by external 2 gas exchange and fluorescence measurements. The increased irradiance of the plants during the high temperature period demonstrated its protective action for both the photosynthetic apparatus of the leaves and subsequent plant growth and development. The productivity of the plants subjected to temperature changes at 250 W m-2 of PAR did not differ from that of controls, whereas the productivity of the plants subjected to the same heat stress but in darkness was halved. Аннотация: The study develops approaches to designing biological life support systems for the Mars mission - for the flight conditions and for a planetary base - using experience of the Institute of Biophysics of the Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences (IBP SB RAS) with the Bios-3 system and ESA's experience with the MELISSA program. Variants of a BLSS based on using Chlorella and/or Spirulina and higher plants for the flight period of the Mars mission are analyzed. It is proposed constructing a BLSS with a closed-loop material cycle for gas and water and for part of human waste. A higher-plant-based BLSS with the mass exchange loop closed to various degrees is proposed for a Mars planetary base. Various versions of BLSS configuration and degree of closure of mass exchange are considered, depending on the duration of the Mars mission, the diet of the crew, and some other conditions. Special consideration is given to problems of reliability and sustainability of material cycling in BLSS, which are related to production of additional oxygen inside the system. Technologies of constructing BLSS of various configurations are proposed and substantiated. Reasons are given for using physicochemical methods in BLSS as secondary tools both during the flight and the stay on Mars. В© 2007.

Аннотация: The paper considers problems of biosynthesis of higher plants' biomass and "biological incineration" of plant wastes in a working physical model of biological LSS. The plant wastes are "biologically incinerated" in a special heterotrophic block involving Califomian worms, mushrooms and straw. The block processes plant wastes (straw, haulms) to produce soil-like substrate (SLS) on which plants (wheat, radish) are grown. Gas exchange in such a system consists of respiratory gas exchange of SLS and photosynthesis and respiration of plants. Specifics of gas exchange dynamics of high plants - SLS complex has been considered. Relationship between such a gas exchange and PAR irradiance and age of plants has been established. Nitrogen and iron were found to the first to limit plants' growth on SLS when process conditions are deranged. The SLS microflora has been found to have different kinds of ammonifying and denitrifying bacteria which is indicative of intensive transformation of nitrogen-containing compounds. The number of physiological groups of microorganisms in SLS was, on the whole, steady. As a result, organic substances - products of exchange of plants and microorganisms were not accumulated in the medium, but mineralized and assimilated by the biocenosis. Experiments showed that the developed model of a man-made ecosystem realized complete utilization of plant wastes and involved them into the intrasystem turnover. Аннотация: An experimental model of a biological life support system was used to evaluate qualitative and quantitative parameters of the internal mass exchange. The photosynthesizing unit included the higher plant component (wheat and radish), and the heterotrophic unit consisted of a soil-like substrate, California worms, mushrooms and microbial microflora. The gas mass exchange involved evolution of oxygen by the photosynthesizing component and its uptake by the heterotroph component along with the formation and maintaining of the SLS structure, growth of mushrooms and California worms, human respiration, and some other processes. Human presence in the system in the form of "virtual human" that at regular intervals took part in the respirative gas exchange during the experiment. Experimental data demonstrated good oxygen/carbon dioxide balance, and the closure of the cycles of these gases was almost complete. The water cycle was nearly 100% closed. The main components in the water mass exchange were transpiration water and the watering solution with mineral elements. Human consumption of the edible plant biomass (grains and roots) was simulated by processing these products by a unique physicochemical method of oxidizing them to inorganic mineral compounds, which were then returned into the system and fully assimilated by the plants. The oxidation was achieved by "wet combustion" of organic biomass, using hydrogen peroxide following a special procedure, which does not require high temperature and pressure. Hydrogen peroxide is produced from the water inside the system. The closure of the cycle was estimated for individual elements and compounds. Stoichiometric proportions are given for the main components included in the experimental model of the system. Approaches to the mathematical modeling of the cycling processes are discussed, using the data of the experimental model. Nitrogen, as a representative of biogenic elements, shows an almost 100% closure of the cycle inside the system. The proposed experimental model of a biological system is discussed as a candidate for potential application in the investigations aimed at creating ecosystems with largely closed cycles of the internal mass exchange. The formation and maintenance of sustainable cycling of vitally important chemical elements and compounds in biological life support systems (BLSS) is an extremely pressing problem. To attain the stable functioning of biological life support systems (BLSS) and to maintain a high degree of closure of material cycles in them, it is essential to understand the character of mass exchange processes and stoichiometric proportions of the initial and synthesized components of the system.
