    The effect of radionuclide and heavy metal contamination of the Yenisei River on cytogenetics of aquatic plant Elodea canadensis / A. Bolsunovsky [et al.] // Radioprotection. - 2009. - Vol. 44, Is. 5. - P83-88, DOI 10.1051/radiopro/20095021 . - ISSN 0033-8451
Аннотация: The study was done to determine concentrations of radionuclides and heavy metals and to evaluate the frequency of chromosomal aberrations in samples of Elodea canadensis, a submerged plant, collected in different parts of the Yenisei River. Samples were collected in the area subjected to radioactive impact of theMining-and-Chemical Combine (MCC) at Zheleznogorsk and in the control areas, upstream of the MCC. The investigations showed that Elodea biomass in the area affected by MCC operation contained a long inventory of artificial radionuclides typical of the MCC discharges. Upstream of the MCC, in the control sampling areas, the sediments and the Elodea biomass contained only one artificial radionuclide - 137Cs. Thus, the exposure doses to Elodea shoots and roots upstream of the MCC are small (not more than 8 ?Gy/d) and the main contribution to them is made by natural radionuclides. At the MCC discharge site (the village of Atamanovo) and downstream of it, the total dose rate increases almost an order of magnitude, reaching its maximal values - 72 ?Gy/d for Elodea shoots and 58 ? Gy/d for roots. Cytogenetic investigations of Elodea roots showed that at the MCC discharge site (the village of Atamanovo) and downstream of it the occurrence of chromosomal aberrations in ana-telophase and metaphase cells of Elodea was considerably higher than in the control area. It is highly probable that this simultaneous dramatic increase in the total exposure rate and the occurrence of chromosomal aberrations in Elodea is associated with the radiation factor. It is suggested that Elodea is affected not only by the radiation factor but also by the chemical factor - toxicity of heavy metals. В© 2009 EDP Sciences.

Аннотация: In the course of monthly sampling in 2008-2010, two regions of the littoral of the Yenisei river were compared. One of these regions (conventionally pure) was situated upstream of Krasnoyarsk, while the other (conventionally polluted) was downstream of Krasnoyarsk. The concentrations of heavy metals, oil products, phenols, biogenic elements and essential polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) in various components of the river ecosystem were determined. It was discovered that the anthropogenic pollution causes a decrease in the resources of essential PUFA in the biomass of the upper links of the food chain of the river ecosystem. Аннотация: The concentrations of metals K, Na, Ca, Mg, Fe, Mn, Zn, Cu, Ni, Pb, Co and Cr, in the water and periphyton (epilithic algal communities) were studied at a site in the middle stream of the Yenisei River (Siberia, Russia) during three years using monthly sampling frequencies. Despite considerable seasonal variations in aquatic concentrations of some metals, there was no correlation between metal contents in the water and in periphyton. Seasonal concentration variations of some metals in periphyton were related to the species (taxonomic) composition of periphytic microalgae and cyanobacteria. Enhanced levels of Ni and Co in periphyton in late autumn, winter, and early spring were likely caused by the predominance of cyanobacteria in the periphytic community, and annual maximum levels of K in periphyton in late spring and early summer were attributed to the domination of Chlorophyta, primarily Ulothrix zonata. Аннотация: Data of two field studies were used to analyze the concentrations of Na, K, Ca, Mg, Fe, Mn, Zn, Cu, Al, Cr, Ni, Cd, and Pb in the water, bottom deposits, zoobenthos, fish, and macrophytes of the Pond Bugach and in the soils near the pond. It was established that the majority of metals in the soils and bottom deposits correlate and their concentrations are governed by the universal geochemical factors of the region. The heavy metals were recognized that originate from anthropogenic sources and their concentrations were found to exceed the maximum admissible values for different components of the ecosystem. Five types of heavy metals migration were recognized in the soil-bottom deposits-zoobenthos-fish chain and in macrophytes. Statistically significant difference was found to exist between the concentrations of some heavy metals in the muscles of fish species with different food types (crucian carp and perch) as well as between the correlations of metals. The recorded concentrations were compared with the concentrations of metals measured in the last decade in other limnetic ecosystems in Siberia, Europe, North America, and China.

Аннотация: During three field seasons (June-September) of 1997-99 contents of Na, K, Ca, Mg, Fe, Mn, Zn, Cu, Al, Cr, Ni, Cd, and Pb were determined in compartments of ecosystem (surrounding soils, bottom sediments, water, zoobenthos, macrophytes, and fish) of a fish and recreation pond situated at the edge of Krasnoyarsk City (Siberia, Russia). Contents of most parts of metals in soils, water, and macrophytes significantly correlated with each other. As concluded, their contents were determined by natural, general, geochemical peculiarities of the region. Heavy metals, contents of which were higher than federal upper limits of concentration, were revealed. In muscles of fish with different feeding spectra - crucian and perch - concentrations of some metals differed significantly; correlation graphs for metals also had different structures. Comparison of our data with those on diverse aquatic ecosystems of Siberia, Europe, North America, and China published in the last decade was carried out. It was concluded that a distribution of heavy metals in the compartments of an aquatic ecosystem presently have to be determined for each particular water body until general regularities are discovered.

Аннотация: Bioregenerative life-support systems (BLSS) are studied for developing the technology for a future biological life-support system for long-term manned space missions. Ways to utilize human liquid and solid wastes to increase the closure degree of BLSS were investigated. First, urine and faeces underwent oxidation by Kudenko's physicochemical method. The products were then used for root nutrition of wheat grown by the soil-like substrate culture method. Two means of eliminating sodium chloride, introduced into the irrigation solution together with the products of urine oxidation, were investigated. The first was based on routine electrodialysis of irrigation water at the end of wheat vegetation. Dialysis eliminated about 50% of Na from the solution. This desalinization was performed for nine vegetations. The second method was new: after wheat cultivation, the irrigation solution and the solution obtained by washing the substrate containing mineral elements not absorbed by the plants were used to grow salt-tolerant Salicornia europaea L. plants (saltwort). The above-ground biomass of this plant can be used as a food, and roots can be added to the soil-like substrate. Four consecutive wheat and Salicornia vegetations were cultivated. As a result of this wheat and Salicornia cultivation process, the soil-like substrate salinization by NaCl were considerably decreased. В© 2008 Humana Press.

Аннотация: The life support systems (LSS) for long-term missions are to use cycling-recycling systems, including biological recycling. Higher plants are the traditional regenerator of air and producer of food. They should be used in many successive generations of their reproduction in LSS. Studies of influence of microbial associations on germination of wheat seeds and on growth of seedlings under impact of heavy metals are necessary because of migration of heavy metals in LSS. Microbial associations are able to stimulate growth of plants, to protect them from pathogenic organisms and from toxicity of heavy metal salts. The goal of this work was to investigate effect of microbial associations on the germination of wheat seeds and on the growth of seedlings under impact of different concentrations of ZnSO4. The results of investigations showed that:(1)Zinc salt had an adverse effect on germination of wheat seeds, beginning with concentrations of 8 MPC (Maximum Permissible Concentration) and higher.(2)Microbial associations (concentrations -104 to 107 cells/ml) were able to decrease (partly or completely) the adverse effect of ZnSO4 on germination of wheat seeds.(3)Concentrations (104-107 cells/ml) of microbial associations were able to decrease partly the adverse effect of zinc salts (intervals: from 1 to 32 MPS{cyrillic}) on the growth and development of wheat plantlets during heterotrophic phase.(4)The root system of plants was more sensitive to the adverse effect of ZnSO4 than shoots of plants. Аннотация: The inhibition of bacterial luminescence has been used in testing industrial enterprises sewage. The toxicity of the sewage is less than the total toxicity of separate components due to neutralization of quinone products of polyphenol oxidation in the reactions with the other phenol components of sewage. Toxicity increase is due to their influence on the cell membrane. Studies of cell ultrastructure confirm this fact. The studied mechanism of the complex effect allowed a more accurate forecast of the ecological situation during the discharge of phenol compounds and metals. It also showed the necessity of taking into account the complex effect of sewage components on contaminant discharge into water reservoirs.

Аннотация: The study addresses the effect produced by different inorganic salts and detergents (SDS, Triton X-100, the Tween series) on the ATP-dependent bioluminescent reaction catalyzed by the luciferase of the new earthworm species Fridericia heliota (Annelida: Clitellata: Oligochaeta: Enchytraeidae). It has been shown that the effect of divalent metal salts on luminescence is determined by the action of cations. Three of them - Mg2+, Mn2+ and Ca2+ - can stimulate luciferase activity at concentrations varying within a wide range, and Mn2+ can act as a 100%-effective substitute for Mg2+ in F. heliota luminescence reaction in vitro. The inhibitory effect of monovalent metal salts on luminescence is largely determined by the action of the anion part of the molecule. The effectiveness of the inhibitory effect of anions increases in the following order: {Mathematical expression}. Of the sodium salts, dodecyl sulfate, which is an anionic detergent, produces the strongest inhibitory effect on luciferase. On the contrary, nonionic detergents produce a stimulatory effect on the F. heliota luciferase. The action of the most effective of them - Triton X-100 - is determined by its ability to reduce the actual concentration of lipid inhibitors in the reaction mixture. В© 2006 Elsevier B.V. The effect is shown to depend on the nature of cations rather than anions, The type of the effect (activation, inhibition, and absence of the effect) is determined by the structure of the; cation, the nature and occupancy of its external orbitals, and charge. The results were interpreted on the basis of the hypothesis that upper electron excited states of the emitter are involved in the bioluminescence process. Based on thermodynamic calculations, the type of the effect was related to the energetic characteristics of the cation, Presumably, the mechanism of action of cations is determined by their involvement in the formation and deactivation of electron excited states in the bioluminescence process.

Аннотация: During three field seasons (June-September) of 1997-99 contents of Na, K, Ca, Mg, Fe, Mn, Zn, Cu, Al, Cr, Ni, Cd, and Pb were determined in compartments of ecosystem (surrounding soils, bottom sediments, water, zoobenthos, macrophytes, and fish) of a fish and recreation pond situated at the edge of Krasnoyarsk City (Siberia, Russia). Contents of most parts of metals in soils, water, and macrophytes significantly correlated with each other. As concluded, their contents were determined by natural, general, geochemical peculiarities of the region. Heavy metals, contents of which were higher than federal upper limits of concentration, were revealed. In muscles of fish with different feeding spectra-crucian and perch-concentrations of some metals differed significantly; correlation graphs for metals also had different structures. Comparison of our data with those on diverse aquatic ecosystems of Siberia, Europe, North America, and China published in the last decade was carried out. It was concluded that a distribution of heavy metals in the compartments of an aquatic ecosystem presently have to be determined for each particular water body until general regularities are discovered.

Аннотация: The study addresses the effect of abiotic (medium salinity and copper ions) and biotic (interactions between populations) factors on the formation of structured communities by binary associations consisting of halotolerant bacteria (Alcaligenes sp. 1-1 or Acinetobacter sp. 1-19) and a wild-type B. subtilis 2335 strain or a transgenic strain. The results showed that 250 mg l(-1) of copper ions inhibit formation of biofilms by monocultures of the tested strains. Binary associations of the strains were more resistant to high concentrations (250 mg l(-1)) of copper ions. At the lowest NaCl concentration (0.05% and 2.5%) and in the presence of copper ions, bacilli seemed to help halotolerant bacteria survive. Under increased salinity and in the presence of copper ions, structured communities developed due to halotolerant bacteria. Coexistence under stressful conditions was beneficial for the both groups of bacteria.

Аннотация: The concentrations of nutrients in water and the total concentrations of metals were determined in water and bottom sediments of four lakes in Ergaki Ridge, which differ in their geographic, morphometric, and hydrophysical characteristics. By the concentration of all examined metals in water and bottom sediments, the lakes can be divided into two groups. The first group includes lakes Oiskoe and Svetloe, which feature large size and depth, while the second group includes small and shallow lakes Raduzhnoe and Karovoe. The concentrations of metals are compared with data obtained for different lakes of other mountain regions and with standards established for their concentrations in water and sediments. The concentrations of Zn and Cu in the sediments of Lake Svetloe were found to exceed the threshold, introduced by international standards, below which no impact on biota is recorded. © 2015, Pleiades Publishing, Ltd.

Аннотация: Long-term monitoring of the abundance and spatial distribution of 18 widespread species of Odonata has made it possible to assess their contribution to the export of aquatic productivity that entered the Barabinsk forest-steppe ecosystem. The annual emergence of Odonata varies from 0.8 to 4.9 g/m2 of the land area and from 2.3 to 13.3 g/m2 of the water area, which is 4–5 times larger than that in Diptera. The total flux of organic matter from water to terrestrial ecosystems remains relatively stable (sixfold interannual variability) irrespective of large interannual variations in the abundance of separate species (e.g., 42-fold interannual variability in Libellula quadrimaculata). The metal content was determined in nine Odonata species. Export of metals by dragonflies decreases in the series K > Na > Mg > Ca > Fe > Zn > Cu > Mn > Pb > Ni > Cr > Cd. Therefore, odonates appear to be quantitatively and qualitatively important providers of aquatic resources to the forest-steppe landscape of Western Siberia. © 2016, Pleiades Publishing, Ltd.

Аннотация: Upon binding their metal ion cofactors, Ca2+-regulated photoproteins display a rapid increase of light signal, which reaches its peak within milliseconds. In the present study, we investigate bioluminescence kinetics of the entire photoprotein family. All five recombinant hydromedusan Ca2+-regulated photoproteinsaequorin from Aequorea victoria, clytin from Clytia gregaria, mitrocomin from Mitrocoma cellularia and obelins from Obelia longissima and Obelia geniculatademonstrate the same bioluminescent kinetics pattern. Based on these findings, for the first time we propose a unanimous kinetic model describing the bioluminescence mechanism of Ca2+-regulated photoproteins.

Аннотация: Experimental data have been presented on the influence of silver on the viscosity and thermal conductivity of a dispersion of diamond nanoparticles. A stable dispersion (5 wt %) of detonation nanodiamond particles has been used in the experiments. Silver ions have been introduced electrolytically into the dispersion of diamond nanoparticles. Silver concentration was not higher than 0.05 wt %. Аннотация: Optically enhanced biosensing strategies are prerequisites for developing miniature and highly sensitive multiplexed analytical platforms. Such smart biosensing systems are highly promising for use in the fields of biomedicine and environmental monitoring. Optical signal enhancement during bioassays is attributed to the complex opto-electronic interactions of incoming photonic signals at the nanomaterial interface. Research on the use of metals other than gold and silver for such purposes tends to extend the spectral window to observe luminescence enhancement effects. Such manifold increase in luminescence may be explained by the principles of plasmon coupling, directional emission led high collection efficiency, Rayleigh scattering and related opto-electronic events. The present review begins with a mechanistic description of important phenomena associated with metal-induced luminescence enhancement, particularly focusing on the origin of metal-enhanced luminescence. This review further analyses the hybrid nanostructure capabilities responsible for maintaining unique opto-electronic properties during bio-functionalisation. Current research trends in this area, future scope of this field for designing useful bioassays and concluding remarks are then discussed. (C) 2017 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Аннотация: The present study describes production of bacterial cellulose composites with silver nanoparticles and antibiotics and compares their properties. Bacterial cellulose (BC) composites synthesized in the culture of the strain of acetic acid bacterium Komagataeibacter xylinus VKPM B-12068 with silver nanoparticles, BC/AgNps, were produced hydrothermally, under different AgNO3 concentrations (0.0001, 0.001, and 0.01 M) in the reaction medium. The presence of silver in the BC/AgNp composites was confirmed by elemental analysis conducted using scanning electron microscopy with a system of X-ray spectral analysis. Analysis showed that the average atomic number of silver particles in composite samples depended on the concentration of AgNO3: as AgNO3 concentration in the reaction solution was increased, silver content in the composites increased from 0.044 to 0.37 mg/cm2. BC composites with amikacin and ceftriaxone were prepared by immersing dry BC films in solutions containing different concentrations of the antibiotics. The surface structure and properties and physicochemical and mechanical characteristics of composites were investigated using SEM, DSC, X-ray analysis, the system for measuring water contact angles, and electromechanical tensile testing machine. The disk-diffusion method and the shake-flask culture method used in this study showed that all experimental composites had pronounced antibacterial activity against E. coli, Ps. eruginosa, K. pneumoniae, and St. aureus, and the BC/antibiotic composites were more active than BC/AgNp ones; S. aureus was the most susceptible to the effect of BC composites. No potential cytotoxicity was detected in any of the BC/AgNp composites in the NIH 3T3 mouse fibroblast cell culture, in contrast to the BC/antibiotic composites. These results suggest that BC composites constructed in the present study hold promise as dressings for managing wounds, including contaminated ones. © 2017 Elsevier Ltd
