Аннотация: The source of radioactive contamination of the Yenisei River floodplain, including contamination with transuranic elements, is the Mining-and-Chemical Combine of the Russian Ministry of Atomic Energy, which has for many years been producing weapons-grade plutonium. Transuranic elements have been detected not only in the soil and sediment of the river but also in the biomass of aquatic plants. This work is an investigation of accumulation and release of 241Am by a submerged macrophyte of the Yenisei River (Elodea canadensis) in laboratory experiments. In 2000-2003, laboratory experiments were carried out with biomass of E. canadensis Mich. and filtered river water. The samples were collected from the Yenisei River upstream of the discharge of the Combine's radioactive effluent. The experiments showed that 241Am is accumulated by Elodea biomass: the activity concentration of 241Am can reach 3280 В± 240 Bq/g, with the concentration factor for 241Am 16 600 В± 2200 l/kg. Results of chemical fractionation have proved that in the course of 241Am accumulation by Elodea biomass, 241Am tightly bound to biomass increases from 11% to 27% of the total 241Am in the biomass. Release of 241Am from the decaying Elodea biomass has been evaluated experimentally. By the end of the experiment (lasting up to 127 days), the Elodea plants had lost up to 65% of their initial 241Am activity and the rate of 241Am release into the water environment reached 23 Bq/day. Аннотация: One of the ways of solving the problem of the human liquid wastes utilization in bioregenerative life support systems (BLSS) can be the use of halophytic vegetable plant Salicornia europaea capable of accumulating sodium chloride in rather high concentrations. Since the most specific higher plant function in BLSS, which at present cannot be substituted by physicochemical processes, appears to be the biosynthesis of a wide spectrum of nutritive substances necessary for a human, the object of the given work was the investigation of the S. europaea productivity, biochemical and mineral composition when grown under close to optimal BLSS vegetative component conditions. As the use of human urine after its preliminary physicochemical processing is supposed to be the mineral solution basis for the S. europaea cultivation, it is necessary to clear up the effect of reduced nitrogen on plants growth. Ground research was carried out. Biochemical composition of the S. europaea edible part showed that crude protein was contained in the highest degree. At that the content of crude protein (24% per dry weight) and cellulose (4.7% per dry weight) was higher in the plants grown on solutions containing amide nitrogen in comparison with the plants grown on solutions with nitrate nitrogen (15.4%-3.1% correspondingly). The water-soluble sugar contents were not high in the S. europaea edible part and depending on the nitrogen nutrition form they amounted to 1.1% (amide nitrogen) and 1.5% (nitrate nitrogen). The polysaccharide number (except cellulose) was rather higher and varied from 7.7% to 8.2%. Although the lipid content in the S. europaea plants was relatively low (7% per dry weight), it was shown that the plant lipids are characterized by a high nonsaturation degree mainly due to alpha linolenic and linoleic acids. Nitrogen nutrition form did not significantly affect the S. europaea productivity, and dry edible biomass of one plant was 8.6 g. Sodium and its concentrations predominated in the plant mineral composition and amounted in average to 9% per dry weight. Thus the S. europaea being the vegetable plant it can be the source of several biochemical substances and essential fatty acids. The present work also considers the influence of nitrate and amide forms of nitrogen on S. europaea biochemical and mineral composition. В© 2008 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Аннотация: Use of halophytes (salt-tolerant vegetation), in a particular vegetable Salicornia europaea plants which are capable of utilizing NaCl in rather high concentrations, is one of possible means of NaCl incorporation into mass exchange of bioregenerative life support systems. In preliminary experiments it was shown that S. europaea plants, basically, could grow on urine pretreated with physicochemical processing and urease-enzyme decomposing of urea with the subsequent ammonia distillation. But at the same time inhibition of the growth process of the plants was observed. The purpose of the given work was to find out the influence of excessive quantities of some mineral elements contained in products of physicochemical processing of urine on the production process and NaCl accumulation by S. europaea plants. As the content of mineral salts in the human liquid wastes (urine) changed within certain limits, two variants of experimental solutions were examined. In the first variant, the concentration of mineral salts was equivalent to the minimum salt content in the urine and was: K - 1.5 g/l, P - 0.5 g/l, S - 0.5 g/l, Mg - 0.07 g/l, Ca - 0.2 g/l. In the second experimental variant, the content of mineral salts corresponded to the maximum salt content in urine and was the following: K - 3.0 g/l, P - 0.7 g/l, S - 1.2 g/l, Mg - 0.2 g/l, Ca - 0.97 g/l. As the control, the Tokarev nutrient solution containing nitrogen in the form of a urea, and the Knop nutrient solution with nitrogen in the nitrate form were used. N quantity in all four variants made up 177 mg/l. Air temperature was 24 В°C, illumination was continuous. Light intensity was 690 ?mol/m2s of photosynthetically active radiation. NaCl concentration in solutions was 1%. Our researches showed that the dry aboveground biomass of an average plant of the first variant practically did not differ from the control and totaled 11 g. In the second variant, S. europaea productivity decreased and the dry aboveground biomass of an average plant totaled 8 g. The increase of K quantity in the experimental solutions resulted in an elevated content of the element in the plants. The increase of K uptake in the second experimental variant was accompanied by a 30-50% decrease of Na content in comparison with the other variants. Comparative Na content in the other variants was practically identical. N, Mg and P content in the control and experimental variants was also practically identical. The increase of S quantity in the second experimental variant also increased S uptake by the plants. But Ca quantity, accumulated in aboveground plants biomass in the experimental variants was lower than in the control. NaCl uptake by plants, depending on the concentration of mineral salts in the experimental solutions, ranged from 8 g (maximum salt content) up to 15 g (minimum salt content) on a plant growth area that totaled 0.032 m2. Thus, high concentrations of mineral salts simulating the content of mineral salts contained in urine did not result in a significant decrease of S. europaea productivity. The present work also considers the influence of higher light intensity concentrations on productivity and NaCl accumulation by S. europaea plants grown on experimental solutions with high salt content. Cucumis sativus -- Dark respiration -- Helianthus annuus -- Line-structured spectrum -- Lycopersicon esculentum -- Photosynthesis -- Plant resistance -- Red light -- Respiration in light
Аннотация: Tomato (Lycopersicon esculentum Mill), sunflower (Helianthus annuus L.), and cucumber (Cucumis sativus L.) plants were grown under red or white light at a radiance of 115 W/m2 under controlled conditions. The red spectra were characterized by either two well-distinguished spectral lines (RL1) or only one (RL2). Apparent photosynthesis (Pa), gross photosynthesis (Pg), dark (Rd), and light (R1) respiration, the content of pigments, and the biochemical composition of plants were estimated. Enhancing the destructive red light influence led to a rise in the Pa/R1 and Pa/Pg ratios and to a decrease in chlorophyll a, nitrate, and reduced nitrogen. RL1 was more inhibitory for plants than RL2. It is concluded that declined energy efficiency of respiration contributes to the destructive effect of RL in sunflower and cucumber plants. The rearrangement of metabolic processes, at which energy efficiency of respiration is maintained, is responsible for adaptation of tomato plants to red light. The obtained results allow one to outline the ways to study the species-specific mechanisms of plant responses to prolonged RL action.

NaCl salinization -- Photosynthetically active radiation -- Productivity -- Salicornia europaea -- Types of nitrogen nutrition -- Salicornia europaea
Аннотация: Effects of various combinations of nutrient solution salinity (0.3, 171, and 342 mM NaCl), photosynthetically active radiation (PAR) of 600 or 1150 ?mol/(m2 s), and type of nitrogen nutrition (amide-N or nitrate-N) on the productivity and the content of accumulated mineral nutrients and free amino acids were studied in Salicornia europaea plants. At PAR of 600 ?mol/(m2 s), plant productivity increased with elevation of salinity level; at 1150 ?mol/(m2 s), the maximum productivity was observed in the plants grown at 171 mM of NaCl. The content of free amino acids in shoots, regardless of PAR, decreased with growing salinity level, whereas Na content, on the opposite, increased. Glutamic acid, rather than proline, was shown to be the main organic osmolyte in this plant species. Comparison of the productivity of plants grown on solutions with amide (urea) or nitrate nitrogen showed that higher biomass accumulation was achieved in the former case. Аннотация: Plant productivity of a common glasswort Salicornia europaea L. was investigated in relation to the type of nitrogen nutrition and as a function of macronutrient concentrations mimicking the mineral composition of human urine. The source of nutrient nitrogen had no substantial effect on productivity of Salicornia europaea. In plants grown on media with amide as a nitrogen source, the content of nitrogenous substances, including glutamic and aspartic amino acids, was higher than in plants grown with nitrate. In plants grown on media with mineral composition analogous to that of human urine, the shoots accumulated Na and K in almost equally high amounts, on the background of high and nearly equal Na and K concentrations in the nutrient media. Аннотация: The study addresses the effect produced by different inorganic salts and detergents (SDS, Triton X-100, the Tween series) on the ATP-dependent bioluminescent reaction catalyzed by the luciferase of the new earthworm species Fridericia heliota (Annelida: Clitellata: Oligochaeta: Enchytraeidae). It has been shown that the effect of divalent metal salts on luminescence is determined by the action of cations. Three of them - Mg2+, Mn2+ and Ca2+ - can stimulate luciferase activity at concentrations varying within a wide range, and Mn2+ can act as a 100%-effective substitute for Mg2+ in F. heliota luminescence reaction in vitro. The inhibitory effect of monovalent metal salts on luminescence is largely determined by the action of the anion part of the molecule. The effectiveness of the inhibitory effect of anions increases in the following order: {Mathematical expression}. Of the sodium salts, dodecyl sulfate, which is an anionic detergent, produces the strongest inhibitory effect on luciferase. On the contrary, nonionic detergents produce a stimulatory effect on the F. heliota luciferase. The action of the most effective of them - Triton X-100 - is determined by its ability to reduce the actual concentration of lipid inhibitors in the reaction mixture. В© 2006 Elsevier B.V. Аннотация: The use of mineralized human wastes as a basis for nutrient solutions will increase the degree of material closure of bio-technical human life support systems. As stress tolerance of plants is determined, among other factors, by the conditions under which they have been grown before exposure to a stressor, the purpose of the study is to investigate the level of tolerance of chufa (Cyperus esculentus L.) plant communities grown in solutions based on mineralized human wastes to a damaging air temperature, 45 °C. Experiments were performed with 30-day-old chufa plant communities grown hydroponically, on expanded clay aggregate, under artificial light, at 690 ?mol m-2 s-1 PAR and at a temperature of 25 °C. Plants were grown in Knop's solution and solutions based on human wastes mineralized according to Yu.A. Kudenko's method, which contained nitrogen either as ammonium and urea or as nitrates. The heat shock treatment lasted 20 h at 690 and 1150 ?mol m -2 s-1 PAR. Chufa heat tolerance was evaluated based on parameters of CO2 gas exchange, the state of its photosynthetic apparatus (PSA), and intensity of peroxidation of leaf lipids. Chufa plants grown in the solutions based on mineralized human wastes that contained ammonium and urea had lower heat tolerance than plants grown in standard mineral solutions. Heat tolerance of the plants grown in the solutions based on mineralized human wastes that mainly contained nitrate nitrogen was insignificantly different from the heat tolerance of the plants grown in standard mineral solutions. A PAR intensity increase from 690 ?mol m -2 s-1 to 1150 ?mol m-2 s-1 enhanced heat tolerance of chufa plant communities, irrespective of the conditions of mineral nutrition under which they had been grown. © 2014 COSPAR. Аннотация: Light intensity and nitrogen concentration of nutrient solution are considered crucial for the contents of vitamin C and nitrate in cultivated leaf vegetables. We here investigated the effects of various combinations of light intensity (60,140 and 220 mu mol m(-2) s(-1)) and nitrogen concentration (7,15 and 23 mmol L-1) of the solution on the growth, photosynthetic characteristics, vitamin C and nitrate content of lettuce. Our results demonstrate that the lettuce had the largest dry biomass at the high illumination of 220 mu mol m(-2) s(-1) and low nitrogen of 7 mmol L-1. The higher light and low nitrogen also contributed to the accumulation of vitamin C and decrease of nitrate in lettuce leaves. The effect of nitrogen supply on chlorophyll concentrations was more efficient under low light than high illumination. Our results reveal that there was an obvious interaction between light intensity and nitrogen available for the photosynthesis, yield and quality of lettuce. This study provides valuable insights into the combinational regulation of light intensity and nitrogen supply for improving growth and nutritional quality of vegetables grown in greenhouse and plant factory. Аннотация: The present study describes construction and investigation of experimental formulations of ammonium nitrate embedded in a matrix of degradable natural polymer poly-3-hydroxybutyrate [P(3HB)] and P(3HB) blended with wood flour shaped as tablets, some of them coated with P(3HB). Kinetics of ammonium release into soil as dependent on the composition of the polymer matrix was investigated in laboratory experiments. The rates of fertilizer release from formulations coated with a biopolymer layer were considerably (two months or longer) slower than the rates of fertilizer release from uncoated formulations, while release from polymer and composite (polymer/wood flour) formulations occurred with comparable rates. The use of the experimental formulations in laboratory ecosystems with wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) was more effective than application of free ammonium nitrate. The advantage of the slow-release fertilizer formulations is that they are buried in soil together with the seeds, and the fertilizer remains effective over the first three months of plant growth. The use of such slow-release formulations will reduce the amounts of chemicals released into the environment, which will curb their accumulation in food chains of ecosystems and mitigate their adverse effects on the biosphere. © 2017 American Chemical Society.

Аннотация: The current investigation deciphers aggregation pattern of gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) and lipid-treated AuNPs when subjected to aqueous sodium chloride solution with increasing ionic strengths (100-400 nM). AuNPs were synthesized using 0.29 mM chloroauric acid and by varying the concentrations of trisodium citrate (AuNP1 1.55 mM, AuNP2 3.1 mM) and silver nitrate (AuNP3 5.3 mu M, AuNP4 10.6 mu M) with characteristic LSPR peaks in the range of 525-533 nm. TEM analysis revealed AuNPs to be predominantly faceted nanocrystals with the average size of AuNP1 to be 35 +/- 5 nm, AuNP2 15 +/- 5 nm, AuNP3 30 +/- 5 nm, and AuNP4 30 +/- 5 nm and the zeta-average for AuNPs were calculated to be 31.23, 63.80, 26.08, and 28 nm respectively. Induced aggregation was observed within 10 s in all synthesized AuNPs while lipid-treated AuNP2 (AuNP2-L) was found to withstand ionic interferences at all concentration levels. However, lipid-treated AuNPs synthesized using silver nitrate and 1.55 mM trisodium citrate (AuNP3, AuNP4) showed much lower stability. The zeta potential values of lipid-treated AuNPs (AuNP1-L-1x/200, -17.93 +/- 1.02 mV; AuNP2-L-1x/200, -21.63 +/- 0.70; AuNP3-L-1x/200, -14.54 +/- 0.90; AuNP3-L-1x/200 -13.77 +/- 0.83) justified these observations. To summarize, AuNP1 and AuNP2 treated with lipid mixture 1 equals or above 1x/200 or 1x/1000 respectively showed strong resistance against ionic interferences (up to 400 mM NaCl). Use of lipid mixture 1 for obtaining highly stable AuNPs also provided functional arms of various lengths which can be used for covalent coupling.

ESKAPE -- Bio-hybridization -- Silver nanobactericides -- Phytogenic -- Bactericidal activity
Аннотация: The rapid expansion of drug-resistant pathogens has created huge global impact and development of novel antimicrobial leads is one of the top priority studies in the current scenario. The present study aims to develop bio-hybridized nanocellulose films which comprise of phytogenic silver nanobactericides. The nanobactericides were synthesized by treating 1 mM silver nitrate with aqueous extract of Chamerion angustifolium which reduced the metal salt to produce polydispersed nanobactericides which were tested against the members of ESKAPE drug-resistant communities. The synthesized silver nanobactericides were subjected to characterization with UV-visible spectra which displayed maximum absorbance at 408 nm. The bio-molecular interaction of phyto-constituents to mediate synthesis and stabilization of nanobactericides was studied with Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) which depicted functional groups associated with nanobactericides. The crystalline nature was studied with X-ray diffraction (XRD) which showed Bragg's intensities at 2 theta angle which denoted (111), (200), (220), and (311) planes. The morphological characteristics of silver nanobactericides were defined with transmission electron Microscopy (TEM) image which displayed polydispersity of silver nanobactericides with size ranging from 2 to 40 nm. The synthesized nanobactericides showed a significant activity against MRSA strain with 21 mm zone of inhibition. The minimal inhibitory concentration of silver nanobactericides to inhibit the growth of test pathogens was also determined which ranged between 0.625 and 1.25 mu g/ml. The silver nanobactericides were bio-hybridized onto nanocellulose films produced by Komagataeibacter xylinus B-12068 culture strain. The films were dried to determine the mechanical properties which showed increased in Young's modulus and tensile strength in comparison with control bacterial cellulose films. Overall, the results obtained in the present investigation are promising enough to report bactericidal activity of bio-hybridized nanobactericidal films against ESKAPE. These communities are reported to cause severe threats to all forms of lives irrespective to their habitats which can lead to huge economical crisis.

Аннотация: The purpose of the present study was to investigate the efficacy of the experimental formulations of the metribuzin (MET) and tribenuron-methyl (TBM) herbicides embedded in the matrix of degradable poly-3-hydroxybutyrate blended with wood flour in field-grown tomato and beet crops infested by weeds. There is a necessity to develop environmentally friendly and effective means to protect plants because of the shortcomings of the free herbicide forms such as the environmentally unsafe spray application of solutions and suspensions of the widespread metribuzin and tribenuron-methyl herbicides, removal from soil during watering events and rains, and transport to natural aquatic environments, where the herbicides accumulate in the trophic chains of biota. Free TBM is also rapidly inactivated in soil and metabolized to nontoxic products in plants. The efficacy of experimental formulations of metribuzin and tribenuron-methyl embedded in the matrix of degradable poly-3-hydroxybutyrate blended with wood flour was tested in field-grown tomato and beet crops infested with weeds. Application of metribuzin resulted in the highest productivity of tomatoes (2.3 kg/m(2)) and table beet (3.4 kg/m(2)), improved biometric parameters of tomato fruits and beet roots, and caused reduction in nitrate nitrogen concentrations in them. The mode of herbicide delivery did not affect sugar contents, but application of both metribuzin and tribenuron-methyl induced a 1.7-fold and 1.4-fold, respectively, increase in vitamin C concentrations in tomato fruits and beet roots relative to the vegetables grown on the subplots treated with free herbicides and the intact plants. Embedded herbicides can be used as preemergence herbicides in the field.

Adenosine 5'-triphosphate -- Carbodiimides -- Ethylene diamine -- Flavin mononucleotide -- Metal-enhanced bioluminescence
Аннотация: Metal-enhanced bioluminescence (MEB) is a complex photophysical event which manifests itself in manifold luminescence enhancement and depends on many parameters. The parameters include the distance between the luminescent source and the nanomaterial surface, the size and shape of nanoparticles, localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) peaks of the nanomaterial and the dielectric constant of the surrounding medium. Studying distance-dependent MEB in the presence of linkers of specified length may provide new insights into luminescence enhancement. In this regard, the present investigation is aimed to understand the role of ethylene diamine as a potential linker in model systems for distance-dependent metal-enhanced bioluminescence (MEB) with gold nanoparticles (AuNPs). Four different types of AuNPs (AuNP1, AuNP2, AuNP3, AuNP4) were synthesized by varying the trisodium citrate (TC) and silver nitrate (AgNO3) concentrations with maximum absorbance values of 0.99, 1.24, 1.21 and 1.38 respectively and the corresponding LSPR peaks (?max) of 520 nm, 535 nm, 525 nm, and 525 nm. Luminescence enhancement up to 1.44-fold was observed when ethylene diamine (ED) was used as a linker in the presence of 1-N-(3-dimethylaminopropyl)-N'-ethylcarbodiimide (EDC), ATP and AuNP1. The sample consisting of FMN, EDC and AuNP1 showed 1.3-fold luminescence enhancement. It was noted that AuNPs synthesized using AgNO3 as an additional component did not enhance luminescence in all the investigations. The suggested technique of using linkers of predetermined lengths may also prove fairly effective for studying other parameters which can influence MEB and cause sensitivity enhancement of luminescence-based biosensors. © Siberian Federal University.
