    Fatty acid analyses reveal high degrees of omnivory and dietary plasticity in pond-dwelling tadpoles / M. R. Whiles [et al.] // Freshwater Biology. - 2010. - Vol. 55, Is. 7. - P1533-1547, DOI 10.1111/j.1365-2427.2009.02364.x . - ISSN 0046-5070

Аннотация: 1. Understanding the trophic relationships of consumers is central to ecology, but constructing meaningful food webs is often difficult because of a lack of detailed information on consumption versus assimilation and high degrees of omnivory.2. We used fatty acid analyses to examine the trophic relationships of three common larval anurans (Pseudacris crucifer, Lithobates catesbeianus and Lithobates clamitans) that are often classified as grazers or detritivores. Tadpoles and potential food sources were sampled in four ponds in southern Illinois and analysed for fatty acid composition. Single linkage cluster analysis was then used to compare fatty acid profiles among tadpole gut contents, tadpole muscle tissues and available food resources.3. Diets varied among species and within species among ponds, but organic sediments consistently contributed most to the fatty acid composition of the gut contents of all species. Fatty acid profiles also indicated that larval insects and phytoplankton were consumed by both L. catesbeianus and L. clamitans in one pond, while L. clamitans and P. crucifer consumed mainly periphyton along with sediments in another pond, and these diet differences appeared linked to physical differences among ponds, with periphyton and/or phytoplankton contributing more to tadpole diets in less shaded ponds.4. The fatty acid composition of muscle tissues of L. clamitans, the dominant tadpole in these systems, indicated that plant detritus and bacteria, which were the dominant components of organic sediments in the ponds, were common components of the assimilatory diet.5. Results demonstrate the utility of fatty acid analyses for assessing both consumption and assimilation. The tadpole assemblages we examined derive much of their energy from heterotrophic and allochthonous sources and exhibit high dietary plasticity. This information will allow for more accurate and comprehensive assessments of trophic interactions in freshwater habitats, as well as aid in amphibian conservation, management and captive propagation efforts. Аннотация: Mathematical model is constructed for studying the effect of photosynthesis stimulation in cyanobacteria after their passing through crucian intestines on cyanobacteria biomass changes after bio-manipulations. At good agreement of model and natural data an explanation is found for observed differences in the influence of planktivorous fish on the two species of cyanobacteria. The calculations showed that one of the reasons for appearance of the peak of water blooming with a species Microcystic may be direct metabolic influence of planktivorous fish. Elimination of crucian from the pond will not affect the level of water blooming with Anabaena species.

Аннотация: Using 16S rRNA gene sequence analyses we investigated the bacterial diversity of winter bacterioplankton of two eutrophic Siberian reservoirs. These reservoirs show similarity in phytoplankton community composition in spring and autumn but tend to differ in summer in exhibiting cyanobacterial bloom. Forty-eight unique partial 16S RNA gene sequences retrieved from two libraries were mostly affiliated with the class Actinobacteria, ? subdivision of the class Proteobacteria, and the phylum Cytophaga-Flavobacterium-Bacteroides. The clone library of the pond exhibiting summer cyanobacterial bloom showed more diversity in sequence composition. A significant number of bacterial 16S rRNA gene clones were closely related to freshwater bacteria previously found in different aquatic ecosystems. This finding confirms the assumption that some bacterial clades are globally distributed.

    Metal Concentrations in the Ecosystem and Around Recreational and Fish-Breeding Pond Bugach / M. I. Gladyshev [et al.] // Water Resources. - 2001. - Vol. 28, Is. 3. - P288-296, DOI 10.1023/A:1010400807660 . - ISSN 0097-8078
Аннотация: Data of two field studies were used to analyze the concentrations of Na, K, Ca, Mg, Fe, Mn, Zn, Cu, Al, Cr, Ni, Cd, and Pb in the water, bottom deposits, zoobenthos, fish, and macrophytes of the Pond Bugach and in the soils near the pond. It was established that the majority of metals in the soils and bottom deposits correlate and their concentrations are governed by the universal geochemical factors of the region. The heavy metals were recognized that originate from anthropogenic sources and their concentrations were found to exceed the maximum admissible values for different components of the ecosystem. Five types of heavy metals migration were recognized in the soil-bottom deposits-zoobenthos-fish chain and in macrophytes. Statistically significant difference was found to exist between the concentrations of some heavy metals in the muscles of fish species with different food types (crucian carp and perch) as well as between the correlations of metals. The recorded concentrations were compared with the concentrations of metals measured in the last decade in other limnetic ecosystems in Siberia, Europe, North America, and China.

Аннотация: During three field seasons (June-September) of 1997-99 contents of Na, K, Ca, Mg, Fe, Mn, Zn, Cu, Al, Cr, Ni, Cd, and Pb were determined in compartments of ecosystem (surrounding soils, bottom sediments, water, zoobenthos, macrophytes, and fish) of a fish and recreation pond situated at the edge of Krasnoyarsk City (Siberia, Russia). Contents of most parts of metals in soils, water, and macrophytes significantly correlated with each other. As concluded, their contents were determined by natural, general, geochemical peculiarities of the region. Heavy metals, contents of which were higher than federal upper limits of concentration, were revealed. In muscles of fish with different feeding spectra - crucian and perch - concentrations of some metals differed significantly; correlation graphs for metals also had different structures. Comparison of our data with those on diverse aquatic ecosystems of Siberia, Europe, North America, and China published in the last decade was carried out. It was concluded that a distribution of heavy metals in the compartments of an aquatic ecosystem presently have to be determined for each particular water body until general regularities are discovered.

Аннотация: A set of bioluminescent tests was developed to monitor water quality in natural and laboratory ecosystems. It consisted of four bioluminescent systems: luminous bacteria, coupled enzyme system NADH:FMN-oxidoreductase-luciferase and triplet enzyme systems with alcohol dehydrogenase and trypsin. The set of biotests was applied for a small forest pond (Siberia, Russia), laboratory microecosystems polluted with benzoquinone and a batch culture of blue-green algae. Thereby effects of natural water compared to those of models of heavy pollution and "bloom" of blue-greens on the bioluminescent tests were revealed. The set of biotests was not affected by a natural seasonal variability of water quality in the unpolluted pond, but responded to the heavy pollution and the "bloom" of blue-greens. The set of biotests could be recommended as the alarm test to control the acute toxicity of natural water bodies. В© 2001 Elsevier Science Ltd.

Аннотация: Using experimental microecosystems the kinetics of phenol disappearance in small forest pond waters (Siberia, Russia) in the summer of 1995-96 were investigated. Despite of high variability of components of the ecosystem (plankton biomass and species composition) and two pronounced 'blooms' of green algae Volvox aureus the same kinetics of the disappearance took place over the investigated period. Half-lives of the pollutant depended on water temperature only. A comparison of the self-purification of the pond with that of the Krasnoyarsk reservoir, 'blooming' with blue-greens was carried out. Half-lives in the pond were significantly lower than that in the reservoir. During the periods of 'blooms' of the green algae in the pond the concentrations of inorganic nutrients were comparatively high and the phenol-degrading bacteria likely were not limited by these nutrients, in contrast to the periods of 'bloom' of the blue-green algae in the reservoir.

    Dynamics of algal biomass and composition of extracellular free fatty acids in experimental microecosystems / N. N. Sushchik // Biology Bulletin. - 1998. - Vol. 25, Is. 6. - P611-616 . - ISSN 1062-3590
Аннотация: The dynamics of biomass and species composition of microalgae and of composition of extracellular free fatty acids was studied for 98 days in laboratory experimental ecosystems inoculated with water from a forest pond. The microecosystems were kept at two temperature levels: 14-17 and 22-25В°C. During the experiment, a community of planktonic microalgae with the predominance of diatoms was succeeded by a community consisting mostly of green, filamentous algae. The succession of species composition of the algal community was accompanied by changes in the composition of extracellular free fatty acids. Variations of temperature did not markedly affect either the species composition of the microalgal community or the ratio of unsaturated to saturated free fatty acids. Аннотация: In this paper, the influence of the extent of openness of ecosystem that is defined by the dilution rate, which characterizes the extent of flowage of the pond, on the intensity of the biotic circulation in ecosystems with different regulation types, number of trophic links and extent of closing has been investigated. We considered open systems, we took into account the return of the limiting substances, such as nitrogen and phosphorous, into the cycle by degradation of detritus and products of vital functions of consumers. It was shown by the numerical calculations that the increase of the dilution rate in without recycle ecosystems leads to increase of the net primary production up to the maximum value corresponding to the two-link trophic chain (biogenic substance and producer) and then, to gradually decrease. The residual concentration of biogenic limiting substances monotone increases. Net primary production and residual concentration of biogenic limiting substances in systems with recycle with even number of links behaves similarly to that in without recycle ecosystems. In the systems with recycle with the odd number of links that values lies on the stable level. We showed that in wide range of the dilution rate the recycling of the ecosystem can highly increase the net primary production and reduce residual concentration of biogenic limiting substances. The influence of the dilution rate on numbers of links that may exist in the system was analyzed. В© 2005 COSPAR. Published by Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Аннотация: Comparison study data on the hydrochemical parameters, bacterio- and phytoplankton, and reduction-oxidation characteristics of two ponds in Krasnoyarsk are presented. These water bodies are of interest due to the fact that the ecosystems of these natural model objects respond to eutrophication in different ways. It is assumed that the reason for this difference is in the hydrophysical characteristics depending on the morphology of the basins of the water bodies rather than in the hydrochemical characteristics.

Аннотация: The authors investigate seasonal dynamics of number of alive and dead zooplankton individuals, their vertical distribution and the rates of sedimetation using special staining. Seasonal dynamics of natural mortality (ageing, parasites, diseases, toxic substances) was calculated. The mortality was maximal in the middle of a summer (the period of zooplankton depression) and minimal - at the beginning and at the end of summer. The method was compared with traditional method of mortality calculation that includes death from predators. It was shown that zooplankton depression in the middle df summer was caused not by press of predators but by other reasons.

As concluded, their contents were determined by natural, general, geochemical peculiarities of the region. Heavy metals, contents of which were higher than federal upper limits of concentration, were revealed. In muscles of fish with different feeding spectra-crucian and perch-concentrations of some metals differed significantly; correlation graphs for metals also had different structures.

Forty-eight unique partial 16S RNA gene sequences retrieved from two libraries were mostly affiliated with the class Actinobacteria, beta subdivision of the class Proteobacteria, and the phylum Cytophaga-Flavobacterium-Bacteroides The clone library of the pond exhibiting summer cyanobacterial bloom showed more diversity in sequence composition. A significant number of bacterial 16S rRNA gene clones were closely related to freshwater bacteria previously found in different aquatic ecosystems. This finding confirms the assumption that some bacterial clades are globally distributed.

Аннотация: We studied non-consumptive (non-predatory) mortality of Daphnia and Cyclops vicinus during four sampling seasons. Mortality estimations were based on live/dead sorting using special staining and measurements of sedimentation rates for dead individuals, depended on wind speed. Original equations were used for calculations. The estimated specific non-consumptive mortality never had biologically senseless negative values, which were often obtained on the basis of the other ways of mortality estimations, and was in a good agreement with other components of population dynamics. As found, the non-consumptive mortality was the important, often the determinant component of the zooplankton population dynamics.

Аннотация: A new method of estimating non-predatory mortality of zooplankton based on live/dead sorting and sediment trap measurement is described. Preliminary results on Daphnia cucullata and Daphnia longispina are given. Estimations of average non-predatory mortality demonstrated a significant contribution of this kind of mortality to total mortality.
