Аннотация: A short survey and critical analysis of previously proposed criteria for growth control of populations of microorganisms in the chemostat are presented. Based on the analysis of a mathematical model of the steady-state of a microbial population in the chemostat, an adequate control criterion is suggested, along with a method to identify the corresponding regulating factors. The new control criterion is expressed as a product of the factor transformation coefficient and the biomass sensitivity coefficient (SC) with respect to the change of the factor at the chemostat inlet (referred to in the sequel as the biomass SC). The control criterion determines the strength of the control exerted by this or that factor. The method of determination of the regulating factors consists in experimental determination of the real SCs for factors and the biomass and in calculating on this basis the corresponding ideal SCs for constant factor transformation coefficients. The ideal SCs are shown to add up to an integer value, a constraint that we call "quantization" relationships. Such relationships are used to test the completeness of the drawn list of control factors. The proposed method was applied to our own and literature data.

Аннотация: Three levels of chemical communications involved plankton Crustacea are considered: 1) Influence of zooplankton excretion on phytoplankton; 2) Influence of zooplankton excretion on the individuals of the same or other species of the same trophic level; 3) Influence of chemical cues released by predatory zooplankton and fish on herbivorous zooplankton. The data on the influence of excreted cues on some physiological (growth, reproduction, feeding, etc.) and behavioural (vertical and horizontal migrations) characters of planktonic crustaceans are presented. Ecological role and chemistry cues responsible for the interactions of different trophic levels can be different. It is considered that chemical communications in aquatic ecosystems can be provided with: 1) Species-specific cues that strictly influence particular biological functions (communication system of feromone type); 2) Non-specific cues that strictly influence particular functions (system of regulator, that act at the whole ecosystem as the hormonal system of an organism). 3) Non-specific substances with broad (non-specidic) influence - toxic substances of "biocondition substances" according to classification of Novikov and Kharlamova (2000).

Аннотация: The usage of chlorophyll fluorescence induction (CFI) for estimating various types of plant resistance (primary, general, initial, adaptive) to stress factors is reviewed. The necessity of ontogenetic approach (considering the age-specific properties of the photosynthetic apparatus) in determining general and adaptive resistance of plants to prolonged action of stress factors by the CFI method is argued. In the plant Cucumbis sativus L., the possibility is shown of using age-specific qualitative and quantitative traits of leaf CFI (changes in the shape of chlorophyll fluorescence induction curves and in the dynamics of CFI parameters in the course of leaf ontogeny) for comparative study of differences between fully active and stressed plants. Possible criteria are suggested for estimating the effect of outer stress factors by the presence or absence of a steady-state phase in the dynamics of CFI parameters during leaf ontogeny. It is also suggested to use the duration of the steady-state phase following the termination of leaf growth (estimated by the dynamics of the slow phase of CFI as the ratio of fluorescence intensity at the peak P and the steady-state fluorescence intensity, FP/FS, or as the viability index Rfd) and the variability of CFI parameters during this period as qualitative estimates of plant resistance to prolonged action of stress factors.

Аннотация: The review deals with objective reasons that limit the use of chlorophyll fluorescence induction kinetics (Chl FIK) method in plant ecology. Based on the ontogenetic approach (analysis and comparison of the dynamics of the Chl fluorescence ratio Fp/Fs and physiological characteristics of plant leaves in ontogeny) possible criteria for the estimation of general plant resistance of photosynthetic apparatus (PSA) to prolonged stress affects are proposed. One of these criteria is the presence or absence of a steady-state phase in the dynamics of Chl fluorescence ratio Fp/Fs (or Rfd) of plant leaves after they stop growing. We also propose to use the duration of the steady-state phase and variability of Chl fluorescence ratios Rfd and Fp/Fs in this period for quantitative assessment of plant PSA resistance to prolonged stress during plant leaf ontogeny.

    Role of essential fatty acids in trophometabolic interactions in the freshwater ecosystems (a review) / N. N. Sushchik // Zhurnal Obshchei Biologii. - 2008. - Vol. 69, Is. 4. - С. 299-316 . - ISSN 0044-4596

Аннотация: Polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA) of ?3 family are of crucial physiological importance for the most animals and they are an essential and deficient component of human nutrition. These compounds are most effectively synthesized by some groups of algae, hence, aquatic ecosystems are considered to be the main source of these PUFA for human nutrition. Factors controlling the content and distribution of ?3 PUFA in freshwater organisms of basic trophic levels and determined PUFA final production in freshwater ecosystems are considered in the review. PUFA biosynthesis is known to be tightly related to basic fatty acid metabolic pathways. Hence, fatty composition and the PUFA content of major freshwater hydrobiont groups, including bacteria, algae, invertebrates and vertebrates, and environmental and population age effects are described. The peculiarities of PUFA transfer between organisms of various trophic levels are discussed. The essential ?3 PUFA is one of the important parameter of food quality of aquatic consumers and they can determine the rate of energy and matter transfer between producers and primary consumers and, as a result, in a whole freshwater food chain. Analysis of PUFA content and its regulation in biomass of various fish populations indicates that freshwater ecosystems are of the same value in respect of PUFA sources as marine ecosystems. Despite the great practical importance, the studies focused on production and whole pools of ?3 PUFA in different freshwater ecosystems are still scarce and need to be continued.

Аннотация: This work is a review of the results of biomedical studies of polymer devices (films, fibers, microparticles, 30 implants) made from resorbable PHAs synthesized by the bacterium Wautersia (Ralstonia) eutropha 65786, using the technology developed at the Institute of Biophysics of the Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences. Two types of PHAs - polyhydroxybutyrate (PHB) and a hydroxybutyrate/hydroxyvalerate copolymer (PHB/PHV) - have been proven to be biocompatible in vitro in cultures of fibroblasts, endothelial cells, hepatocytes, and osteoblasts, and in short- and long-duration experiments on animals. Polymer films and membranes have been found to be usable as scaffolds for functioning cells and monofilament suture fibers - for stitching muscular-fascial wounds and in abdominal surgery. Ectopic bone formation assay and experiments with the model of segmental osteotomy showed that 30 PHB and PHB/HA implants can be used for reparative osteogenesis. The paper reports beneficial results of using polymers to repair bone defects in oral surgery. Copyright В© 2008 WILEY-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. KGaA.

Global carbon cycle -- Siberian boreal forests -- mathematical modeling -- atmospheric boundary layer budget method
Аннотация: Difficulties in estimating terrestrial ecosystem CO2 fluxes on regional scales have significantly limited our understanding of the global carbon cycle. We present a method of using tall-tower-based CO2 concentrations for estimating CO2 fluxes over a forested region. With long-term measurements of the CO2 mixing ratio at a 300-m-tall tower, regional CO2 fluxes were estimated for several months, from the first obtained data. Estimates of a monthly-integrated surface CO2 flux over the region were obtained by the analysis of average gradients and estimates of the rate of vertical mixing between the atmospheric boundary layer (ABL) and the free troposphere. For the comparison of the ABL budget method and field measurements a zero-dimensional mathematical model of the ecosystem of Siberian boreal forests was used. The model is a system of ordinary differential equations with additional conditions superimposed on the parameters. The main occurring processes are described - photosynthesis, respiration, seasonal changes of active phytomass, water balance of trees, the influence of light, humidity, and temperature on photosynthesis and respiration. ecology -- sustable development
Аннотация: Since almost any waste recycling requires non-zero resources, almost any technology exerts non-zero impact on the biosphere. Therefore, there is an objective of finding technological configuration providing a minimal harmful effect on the biosphere. Correct assessment of the harmful effect requires as broad a framework of consideration as possible. A comparison of ecological impacts of gasoline and electric vehicles was conducted as an example of applying this approach. The contribution of technological processes involved into production, usage, and disposal of vehicles was taken into account. Comparison of the total environmental impact of the vehicles has led to a result that differs radically from widely distributed points of view about the environmental benefits of electric vehicles. It indicates that the use of the proposed approach can significantly change perceptions about the environmental and economic efficiency of various industrial products and processes. Аннотация: In this review we summarize the progress made towards understanding the role of protein-protein interactions in the function of various bioluminescence systems of marine organisms, including bacteria, jellyfish and soft corals, with particular focus on methodology used to detect and characterize these interactions. In some bioluminescence systems, protein-protein interactions involve an "accessory protein" whereby a stored substrate is efficiently delivered to the bioluminescent enzyme luciferase. Other types of complexation mediate energy transfer to an "antenna protein" altering the color and quantum yield of a bioluminescence reaction. Spatial structures of the complexes reveal an important role of electrostatic forces in governing the corresponding weak interactions and define the nature of the interaction surfaces. The most reliable structural model is available for the protein-protein complex of the Ca2+-regulated photoprotein clytin and green-fluorescent protein (GFP) from the jellyfish Clytia gregaria, solved by means of X-ray crystallography, NMR mapping and molecular docking. This provides an example of the potential strategies in studying the transient complexes involved in bioluminescence. It is emphasized that structural studies such as these can provide valuable insight into the detailed mechanism of bioluminescence.

Аннотация: The bioluminescent jellyfish has contributed two famous proteins to modern science: green fluorescent protein or GFP, which finds wide use as a probe in cell biology studies, and aequorin, which has been used for intracellular calcium measurement for more than 30 years. More recently, obelin, a protein from the bioluminescent hydroid and also in the family of what are called "Ca2+-regulated photoproteins", has been shown to have very attractive properties both in general applications and for basic structural biology investigations. Аннотация: Calcium-regulated photoproteins are bioluminescent proteins that are responsible for the luminescence of marine coelenterates. A photoprotein molecule is a stable enzyme-substrate complex consisting of a single polypeptide chain and an oxygen-preactivated substrate, 2-hydroperoxcoelenterazine, which is tightly but noncovalently bound with the protein. Bioluminescence is triggered by Ca2+ and results from decarboxylation of the substrate bound with the protein. This review considers the current information about the structure of photoproteins, the mechanism of the bioluminescent reaction, the function of particular amino acid residues of the active center in catalysis and the formation of the emitter, and the use of photoproteins in bioluminescent microanalysis.

Redescription of Fridericia heliota (Annelida, Clitellata: Enchytraeidae), a luminous worm from the Siberian taiga, with a review of bioluminescence in the Oligochaeta / E. Аннотация: The Siberian enchytraeid Fridericia heliota Zalesskaja, 1990 has so far been known only through a paper in Russian briefly describing its luminescence and the major external and internal morphological features. The present study expands that preliminary description, amending it as regards the chaetal formula, the clitellar pattern, the form of the nephridia and the occurrence of glands at the spermathecal orifices, and providing a more comprehensive taxonomic characterization of the species. More detailed information is also given on its habitat and geographical range as well as on its unusual luminous properties. In F. heliota, the production of light is confined to the body wall with a pattern corresponding to that of the epidermal gland cells, although it does not involve discharge of luminous mucus. This contrasts with observations on other enchytraeids and on the oligochaetes in general. Records of luminosity in the Oligochaeta are reviewed with comments.

Аннотация: The foreign and Russian literature devoted to studying the effect of enhancing the growth of colonies of the cyanobacterium Microcystis aeruginosa Kutz em. Elenk. after their passage in a viable state through the digestive tract of filter-feeding aquatic animals (planktivorous fish, daphnia, and bivalves) has been analyzed. The main mechanisms of this effect are considered. Its role in the functioning of eutrophic reservoirs is discussed. The prospects and the need for further studies of the effect of enhancing Microcyctis growth after its viable passage through the digestive tracts of filter-feeding animals are shown for the development of a complete theory of the functioning of aquatic ecosystems.

RELIABILITY
   SPACE

Аннотация: This paper is devoted to the consideration of possible viewpoint on CELSS development and design. If the aim to create practically applicable CELSS is accepted then the task to optimize the process of CELSS research and development in terms of minimum cost, hours, maximum applicability, scientific contribution, etc. becomes actual. Requirements of applicability and scientific significance are synergetic since understanding of general properties of CELSS gives an ability to create CELSS for different applications. To accomplish the task three main groups of parameters have to be optimized: i) configuration and operating parameters of developing CELSS itself, ii) organizational management of research and development of CELSS; iii) features of an area where CELSS is planned to be used (space missions, terrestrial applications, or biosphere investigation) and where requirements to CELSS characteristic come from. Given paper is a brief review presented some attempts to arrange mentioned above into some set of formalized and interacting criteria, and some progression of research stages derived from these criteria.
