Evidence for two abrupt warming events of SST in the last century / C. A. Varotsos [et al.] // Theoretical and Applied Climatology. - 2013. - P1-10, DOI 10.1007/s00704-013-0935-8 . - ISSN 0177-798X
Аннотация: We have recently suggested that the warming in the sea surface temperature (SST) since 1900, did not occur smoothly and slowly, but with two rapid shifts in 1925/1926 and 1987/1988, which are more obvious over the tropics and the northern midlatitudes. Apart from these shifts, most of the remaining SST variability can be explained by the El Nino Southern Oscillation and the Pacific Decadal Oscillation (PDO). Here, we provide evidence that the timing of these two SST shifts (around 60В years) corresponds well to the quasi-periodicity of many natural cycles, like that of the PDO, the global and Northern Hemisphere annual mean temperature, the Atlantic Multi-decadal Oscillation, the Inter-Tropical Convergence Zone, the Southwest US Drought data, the length of day, the air surface temperature, the Atlantic meridional overturning circulation and the change in the location of the centre of mass of the solar system. In addition, we show that there exists a strong seasonal link between SST and ENSO over the tropics and the NH midlatitudes, which becomes stronger in autumn of the Northern Hemisphere. Finally, we found that before and after each SST shift, the intrinsic properties of the SST time series obey stochastic dynamics, which is unaffected by the modulation of these two shifts. In particular, the SST fluctuations for the time period between the two SST shifts exhibit 1/f-type long-range correlations, which are frequently encountered in a large variety of natural systems. Our results have potential implications for future climate shifts and crossing tipping points due to an interaction of intrinsic climate cycles and anthropogenic greenhouse gas emissions. Аннотация: Biodegradation of film specimens from polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHAs) of two types - poly-3-hydroxybutyrate (PHB) and poly-3-hydroxybutyrate-co-3- hydroxyvalerate (PHBV) - was analysed in different environments: tropical sea waters of the South China Sea (Nha Trang, Vietnam) and soils in the environs of Hanoi (Vietnam), Nha Trang (Vietnam) and Krasnoyarsk (Siberia, Russia). In seawater, the mass loss of the specimens of both types was almost equal. However, in tropical soils, PHB degraded quicker than PHBV. In the Siberian soil, the degradation rate of the PHBV was generally higher than that of PHBV. Analysis of molecular mass of PHA specimens showed its decreasing during biodegradation. In the tropical sea conditions, PHA degrading microorganisms were represented by bacteria of Enterobacter, Bacillus and Gracilibacillus genera. Among PHA degrading bacteria, Burkholderia, Alcaligenes, Bacillus, Mycobacterium and Streptomyces genera were identified in Vietnamese soils, and Variovorax, Stenotrophomonas, Acinetobacter, Pseudomonas, Bacillus and Xanthomonas genera in Siberian soils. Micromycetes of Gongronella, Paecilomyces, Penicillium and Trichoderma genera exhibited PHA degrading activity in Vietnamese soils, and Paecilomyces, Penicillium, Acremonium, Verticillium and Zygosporium genera - in Siberian soils. Аннотация: The biodegradation patterns of two types of PHA, a 3-hydroxybutyrate (3-PHB) polymer and a 3-hydroxybutyrate and 3-hydroxyvalerate (3-PHB/3-PHV) copolymer, were studied in tropical marine environments (Dam Bay, South China Sea, Nha Trang, Vietnam). No reliable differences in the degradation of 3-PHB and 3-PHB/3-PHV were revealed. It was shown that the degradation process depended mainly on the shape of a polymer product and its production method: the degradation of polymer films was found to be more active than that of molded solids. A decrease in the molecular mass of both types of PHA was detected in the course of the degradation of PHA samples. However, the degree of PHA crystallinity did not change; that is, the levels of degradation of both the amorphous and crystalline phases of PHA were almost the same. Among microbial PHA degraders, three bacterial strains, Bacillus sp. IBP-V002, Enterobacter cloacae sp. IBP-V001, and Gracilibacillus sp. IBP-V003, were identified based on the results of morphological, biochemical, and molecular phylogenetic analyses. The ability of the representatives of the genera Gracilibacillus and Enterobacter to degrade PHA was revealed for the first time. В© 2011 Pleiades Publishing, Ltd.

Аннотация: Biodegradability patterns of two PHAs: a polymer of 3-hydroxybutyric acid (3-PHB) and a copolymer of 3-hydroxybutyric and 3-hydroxyvaleric acids (3-PHB/3-PHV) containing 11 mol% of hydroxyvalerate, were studied in the tropical marine environment, in the South China Sea (Nha Trang, Vietnam). No significant differences have been observed between degradation rates of 3-PHB and 3-PHB/3-PHV specimens; it has been found that under study conditions, biodegradation is rather influenced by the shape of the polymer item and the preparation technique than by the chemical composition of the polymer. Biodegradation rates of polymer films in seawater have been found to be higher than those of compacted pellets. As 3-PHB and 3-PHB/3-PHV are degraded and the specimens lose their mass, molecular weight of both polymers is decreased, i.e. polymer chains get destroyed. The polydispersity index of the PHAs grows significantly. However, the degree of crystallinity of both PHAs remains unchanged, i.e. the amorphous phase and the crystalline one are equally disintegrated. PHA-degrading microorganisms were isolated using the clear-zone technique, by inoculating the isolates onto mineral agar that contained PHA as sole carbon source. Based on the 16S rRNA analysis, the PHA-degrading strains were identified as Enterobacter sp. (four strains), Bacillus sp. and Gracilibacillus sp.В© 2010 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Аннотация: Frozen samples of common fish species, sea trout (Salmo trutta), from Norway and Siberia, herring (Clupea harengus pallasi), rock sole (Lepidopsetta bilineata) and cod (Gadus morhua maris-albi), collected from a wholesale market in Krasnoyarsk city (Siberia, Russia) were analyzed. Special attention was paid to long-chain essential polyunsaturated fatty acids: eicosapentaenoic, 20:5?3 (EPA) and docosahexaenoic, 22:6?3 (DHA). Heat-treatment (cooking and frying) did not in general significantly decrease the contents of EPA and DHA compared to raw fish species, except for a modest reduction in Norwegian trout during frying. Boiled trout appeared to be a more valuable fish dish for obtaining the officially recommended appropriate daily intake of EPA + DHA for humans. Herring and sole had intermediate values, while boiled cod had a comparatively low value. В© 2006 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Аннотация: Continuous monitoring of phytopigment concentrations and sea surface temperature in the ocean by space-borne methods makes possible to estimate ecological condition of biocenoses in critical areas. In the papers of the authors (Shevyrnogov A.P., Vysotskaya G.S., Gitelzon J.I. 1996) existence of zones, which are quasi-stationary with similar seasonal dynamics of chlorophyll concentration at surface layer of ocean, was shown. Results were obtained on the base of processing of time series of satellite images SeaWiFS. It was shown that fronts and frontal zones coincide with dividing lines between quasi-stationary areas, especially in areas of large oceanic streams. The usage of the seasonal dynamics gives a possibility to circumvent influence of high-frequency component in investigation of dynamics of spatial distribution of surface streams. In addition, an analyses of unstable ocean productivity phenomena, stood out time series of satellite images, showed existence of areas with different types of instability in the all Global ocean. They are observed as adjacent nonstationary zones of different size, which are associated by different ways with known oceanic phenomena. It is evident that dynamics of a spatial distribution of biological productivity and sea surface temperature can give an additional knowledge of complicated picture of surface oceanic layer hydrology. Аннотация: The work presents the data on the spatial distribution of temperature anomalies in the Global Ocean, based on the long-term measurements with the AVHRR satellite equipment. It is noteworthy that such results can be only obtained by using long time series of satellite images. To obtain them by ship-borne methods is actually impossible. The proposed anomaly criterion is equal to a difference between minimum/maximum and average temperature, normed for the mean square deviation. The difference is calculated from the whole time series (with regard to a season). Based on this criterion, anomalies can be distinguished on the background of usual seasonal dynamics at various absolute values of deviations of the measured parameter. Besides, rare, single, fluctuations can be also revealed. Based on the proposed criterion, connected zones have been defined. These zones occur almost in every part of the Global Ocean. The data obtained have been analyzed in association with the CZCS (1978-1986) and SeaWiFS satellite images in order to compare them with the areas of anomalous dynamics of chlorophyll concentration and the regions quasistationary in the seasonal dynamics of chlorophyll. Anomalies in the temperature dynamics are of exceptional importance for the formation of climatic deviations; they affect the ocean-atmosphere interaction and reflect variations in the hydrological structure of the surface waters. The work presents a comparison with the dynamics of chlorophyll concentration distribution determined from the SeaWiFS data for the Atlantic Ocean. В© 2003 COSPAR. Published by Elsevier Ltd. Аннотация: Variability of chlorophyll concentration in the ocean is one of the most important components of the primary production process on the planet. To preserve the biosphere and to make appropriate use of it, it is imperative to have a deep insight into the long-term dynamics of the primary production on the planet. To investigate the dynamics of chlorophyll concentration based on satellite data, the Institute of Biophysics (Russian Academy of Sciences, Siberian Branch) has developed a geoinformation system. It was used to detect the areas in the global ocean that are quasistationary in relation to seasonal dynamics of chlorophyll concentration. Areas such as these, found in the Indian Ocean, are described in this work. These areas form the basis for the analysis of long-term dynamics of chlorophyll concentration. In these quasistationary zones systematic monitoring of phytopigment concentration is conducted by space-borne and marine craft. The work presents long-term satellite-based data on the space distribution of anomalous deviations of chlorophyll concentration in the ocean. An anomaly criterion is proposed and maps of Pacific Ocean areas with a high probability of anomalies are presented. В© 2004 Taylor and Francis Ltd.

Аннотация: The work presents long-standing CZCS-satellite-based data about spatial distribution of anomalies in chlorophyll concentration and temperature of the ocean. An anomaly criterion is proposed. Maps of Atlantic ocean areas with elevated probability of anomalies are given. Properties of anomalous zones in different parts of the Atlantic ocean are discussed. Satellite-based maps of anomaly coefficients for chlorophyll concentration and temperature in the Atlantic ocean have been shown to feature substantial differences, the zones of elevated anomaly of chlorophyll concentration and temperature - to be close only in the vicinity of the Amazon outflow into the Atlantic ocean. Along with fundamental knowledge about dynamics of biological phenomena in the ocean the methods described may be used to reveal deviations due to anthropogenic impact. The methods presented may be used to process SeaWiFS prograna data. The data derived may be used to analyze long-standing time series to estimate randomness of cunent changes. В©2002 COSPAR. biological rhythm -- bioluminescence -- diurnal variation -- Barents Sea -- Russian Federation
Аннотация: Characteristics of the diurnal rhythm of the bioluminescence field are analyzed on the basis of experimental data obtained in the region around Kamchatka peninsula (50В°3 1'N; 163В°50'E). The feasibility of reconstructing the nocturnal structure of the bioluminescence field by measurements made at other times of the day has been demonstrated. Diurnal rhythm parameters for the bioluminescent field of several other studied areas of the ocean have been defined. The temporal parameters feature linear latitudinal dependence. At the equator the boundaries of morning and evening transition periods are 05:06 to 07:30 and 17:48 to 19:54 hrs, respectively. In the Barents Sea in spring these boundaries are 02:42 to 04:06 and 19:48 to 21:12 hrs. Boundary times of diurnal rhythm do not deviate from the linear regression by more than 10%.

Frontal zones -- North Atlantic oscillation -- Sea surface temperature gradients -- South oscillation - El Ninjo -- Thermohaline circulation -- Variability of gradients
Аннотация: AVHRR MCSST data for the periods 1982-2000 (mean weekly data) were used to calculate mean gradient fields in the ocean for different periods of time. Three-month averaged sea surface temperature gradients (SSTG) and their mean seasonal variations have been studied for 25 points in the large-scale oceanic fronts zones. Major oceanic fronts in the Atlantic and Pacific have been identified and compared in literature. In the North Atlantic and Pacific, the areas under study were the North Polar Front and Subpolar Fronts. In the South Atlantic and Pacific we studied the region of the Antarctic Circumpolar Current (ACC) and the fronts formed by this current, known as the South Polar Front, and the Subantarctic Front. SSTG were also calculated for El Nino (Southeast Pacific) and Benguela Current (Southeast Atlantic). In warm periods seasonal SSTG in the North Atlantic markedly increased and exhibit some interannual cycles. The correlation between the North Atlantic Oscillation index and seasonal SSTG for a single point in the Gulf Stream zone can be the key point for evaluation of heat transfer by the currents to the coast of East Europe. In the Southern Atlantic, the SSTG values are low during the cold period (summer in the southern hemisphere) in the ACC zone and increase in the warm season (winter in the southern hemisphere). It also exhibits interannual cycles. In the Northwest Pacific for some points in the Subpolar Front the SSTG values are high in the cold period (winter). Here at seven points in the spring of 1993 and 2000 the calculations disclosed significant increase of the gradient. In these years, the anomalous SSTG in Subpolar Front and South Polar Front were found to vary synchronously in both hemispheres, with maximum intensity in spring (North Pacific) and in summer (South Pacific). Mean annual SSTG in the El Nino zone and south oscillation index have been found to exhibit some correlation. Major jet currents periodically form high-gradient temperature fields and from the temperature satellite data we can derive information about variation in the large-scale fronts in the Global Ocean. AVHRR -- frontal feature -- global ocean -- sea surface temperature -- spatiotemporal analysis
Аннотация: Satellite monitoring of large-scale ocean fields allows collection and analyse of information on dynamics processes in various areas of the ocean. Investigation of the World Ocean processes involves the determination of space-time changes of sea surface temperature (SST). Water temperature of the ocean is one of major characteristics of surface water masses. Distribution of water temperature depends not only on regional climate peculiarities but also on formation of high gradient temperature zones. These zones emerge due to interaction of different current structure, circulation and eddies. Some more important characteristics of such zones are space dimensions and time of existence (lifetime). Space-time scales of the above structure have not been investigated in detail. The aim of the paper is to study space-time changes of the surface temperature frontal zones and frontal partitions in the ocean by AVHRR satellite information.

Аннотация: For analytical purposes bioluminescence can be used in three main ways: 1. luminescence measurement of bioluminescent system components isolated in vitro; 2. determination of luminous organisms' reaction to the in vivo test-action; 3. measurement of bioluminescence in marine ecological systems. The majority of the reports of this Symposium are dealing with the first two topics. The aim of our presentation is to draw attention to the third one. The possibilities of bioluminescent analysis are wider than its traditional scheme of applications in the laboratory, when the emitting system is withdrawn from a native source and is placed in a cuvette of the light measuring device. The reverse scheme is also possible, i.e. the device can be introduced into light emitting system such as a marine biocenosis--the community of the sea inhabitants--where we obtain a highly sensitive and rapid means of gaining the information on the vital activity of marine ecosystems, i.e. their spatial structure, rhythms, man's influence upon them, etc. The present communication will consider the possibilities of this form of bioluminescent analysis.

Аннотация: Bioluminescence in the sea pansy Renilla involves two distinct proteins, a Ca2+-triggered coelenterazine-binding protein (CBP), and Renilla luciferase. CBP contains one tightly bound coelenterazine molecule, which becomes available for reaction with luciferase and O-2 only subsequent to Ca2+ binding. CBP belongs to the EF-hand superfamily of Ca2+-binding proteins and contains three "EF-hand" Ca2+-binding sites. The overall spatial structure of recombinant selenomethionine-labeled CBP determined at 1.7 angstrom, is found to approximate the protein scaffold characteristic of the class of Ca2+-regulated photoproteins. Photoproteins however, catalyze molecular oxygen addition to coelenterazine producing a 2-hydroperoxycoelenterazine intermediate, which is stabilized within the binding cavity in the absence of Ca2+. Addition of Ca2+ triggers the bioluminescence reaction. However in CBP this first step of oxygen addition is not allowed. The different amino acid environments and hydrogen bond interactions within the binding cavity are proposed to account for the different properties of the two classes of proteins.

Аннотация: Several flavoproteins and cytochromes that occur as major components in extracts of the yellow bioluminescence Y1 strain of the murine bacterium Vibrio fischeri have been purified and characterized with respect to their mass (SDS/PAGE) and matrix-assisted laser-desorption/ionization MS), chromatographic properties, N-terminal sequence, and spectroscopy (absorption, fluorescence emission and anisotropy decay). The investigated proteins were as follows: yellow fluorescence protein (YFP) with bound riboflavin, FMN or 6,7-dimethyl-8-ribityllumazine; a blue fluorescence protein (BFP) with bound 6,7-dimethyl-8-ribityllumazine, riboflavin, or 6- methyl-7-oxo-ribityllumazine; thioredoxin reductase with FAD as ligand; and two c-type diheme cytochromes, c551 and c554. We present evidence that the riboflavin-bound YFP has an N-terminal sequence corresponding to that published for the dimeric YFP. We show that an equilibrium replacement of the riboflavin can be made with excess lumazine derivative and that lumazine- bound YFP has different bioluminescence properties to those of the lumazine protein from Photobacterium leiognathi. BFP is a different protein again, and in the bacterial lysate it occurs in multiple forms, ligated to either riboflavin, lumazine, or t he 7-oxolumazine derivative. The N-terminal sequence for BFP-shows similarities to those of the YFP proteins and to lumazine protein and riboflavin synthase from Photobacterium. BFP in any form has no bioluminescence or riboflavin-synthase activity. A 70-kDa fluorescent flavoprotein with FAD as ligand has an N-terminal sequence highly similar to those of thioredoxin reductases from Haemophilus influenza and Escherichia coli. Cytochrome contaminations in previous preparations of YFP have been removed and an identified as the two c-type cytochromes c551 and c554. Both inhibit the NADH-induced bioluminescence in the reductase/luciferase system with the luciferase from P. leiognathi and V. fischeri. The N-terminal amino acid sequence of the cytochrome (c551) corresponds to a diheme cytochrome c4. The spectral properties of c554 are similar to those of other c5 cytochromes, and both c554 and c551 have absorption spectra similar to those of the respective cytochromes from the gram-negative bacteria Pseudomonas and Azotobacter.

Аннотация: Zooplankton carcasses are ubiquitous in marine and freshwater systems, implicating the importance of non-predatory mortality, but both are often overlooked in ecological studies compared with predatory mortality. The development of several microscopic methods allows the distinction between live and dead zooplankton in field samples, and the reported percentages of dead zooplankton average 11.6 (minimum) to 59.8 (maximum) in marine environments, and 7.4 (minimum) to 47.6 (maximum) in fresh and inland waters. Common causes of non-predatory mortality among zooplankton include senescence, temperature change, physical and chemical stresses, parasitism and food-related factors. Carcasses resulting from non-predatory mortality may undergo decomposition leading to an increase in microbial production and a shift in microbial composition in the water column. Alternatively, sinking carcasses may contribute significantly to vertical carbon flux especially outside the phytoplankton growth seasons, and become a food source for the benthos. Global climate change is already altering freshwater ecosystems on multiple levels, and likely will have significant positive or negative effects on zooplankton non-predatory mortality. Better spatial and temporal studies of zooplankton carcasses and non-predatory mortality rates will improve our understanding of this important but under-appreciated topic.

Аннотация: We have recently suggested that the warming in the sea surface temperature (SST) since 1900, did not occur smoothly and slowly, but with two rapid shifts in 1925/1926 and 1987/1988, which are more obvious over the tropics and the northern midlatitudes. Apart from these shifts, most of the remaining SST variability can be explained by the El Nio Southern Oscillation and the Pacific Decadal Oscillation (PDO). Here, we provide evidence that the timing of these two SST shifts (around 60 years) corresponds well to the quasi-periodicity of many natural cycles, like that of the PDO, the global and Northern Hemisphere annual mean temperature, the Atlantic Multi-decadal Oscillation, the Inter-Tropical Convergence Zone, the Southwest US Drought data, the length of day, the air surface temperature, the Atlantic meridional overturning circulation and the change in the location of the centre of mass of the solar system.
