Аннотация: The experiments in which phosphorus radionuclide was added to samples of algobacterial community of the Yenisei River taken near the production area of the Mining-and-Chemical Combine (Zheleznogorsk) made possible determining the uptake rates and coefficients of radionuclide accumulation by microorganisms. Radios between processes of adsorption and accumulation of phosphorus radionuclide by components of water seston (suspended matter) have been determined. The portion of the specific radioactivity of phosphorus adsorbed by unit mass of seston (and algae) has been found to be not more than 7% of the activity accumulated by algal cells.

Аннотация: In 11 lakes from cold and warm regions we studied the content of highly unsaturated fatty acids (HUFA) in seston (<130?m) and crustacean zooplankton using gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. An increase of temperature correlated with a decrease of HUFA content in zooplankton. A multivariate canonical correlation analyses revealed, that the decrease of HUFA content was related with a decrease of per cent of copepods in zooplankton communities, which are known to have higher HUFA levels in their biomass, than cladocerans. This means that temperature primarily affected the HUFA levels indirectly, via changing of taxonomic structure of zooplankton community, while the homeoviscous adaptation of zooplankton individuals had comparatively lower importance. As found, water temperature was better predictor of HUFA contents of zooplankton, than the fatty acid composition of seston. Thus, it can be predicted, that a probable climate warming will decrease the content of the essential HUFA in freshwater zooplankton with possible negative consequences for animals of higher trophic levels. Аннотация: It is shown that in the area inhabited by a colony of the common heron in a high-trophic shallow lake a number of structure parameters of plankton undergoes changes similar to those observed at anthropogenic eutrophication and indicating an increase in biogenic and organic load. At the same time a number of changes is revealed that are usually not registered when human influence increases. The composition and content of polyunsaturated fatty acids in seston and zooplankton show that diatoms and detritus of land genesis play relatively smaller role in the zooplankton nutrition in the lake area influenced by the birds. The zooplankton developing in this zone is a better food rich in essential docosahexaenoic acid necessary for the growth and development of the fish. В© 2011 Pleiades Publishing, Ltd.

Аннотация: During two sampling seasons we analyzed on weekly basis fatty acid (FA) composition of seston fraction <130?m and zooplankton fraction >130?m, and compared them using a multivariate canonical correlation analysis (CCA). Besides, we evaluated a possible impact of water temperature and inorganic nutrients on FA composition of the seston and the zooplankton. In spite of significant differences in percentages of several individual FAs, we found very strong canonical correlation (cross-correlation, 1-week lag) between FA composition of the seston and the zooplankton. The most important factor, providing the overall canonical cross-correlation between FA profiles of the seston and the zooplankton fractions was eicosapentaenoic acid (20:5?3, EPA). FA composition of the zooplankton fraction had comparatively poor correlations with taxonomic composition of the zooplankton. Thus, seasonal variations of FA composition of the zooplankton were determined primarily by seasonal changes in FA composition of the seston, rather than by taxonomic differences of FA profiles between rotifers, cyclopoids and cladocerans. FA composition of the seston was strongly affected by its taxonomic composition, namely by that of phytoplankton. According to CCA, the highest factor loadings pertained to diatoms interacting with their marker acids, including EPA, and cyanobacteria and greens, interacting with their marker acids. Ciliates and small rotifers composed considerable and sometimes major part of the seston biomass, but according to CCA their contributions to seasonal variations of the total FA profile of the seston were insignificant. This finding indirectly support the conclusion of the other authors, that the main source of FAs presented in ciliates and rotifers must be sought in algae and that they do not modify FA composition of food consumed, apart from repackaging it.Water temperature was the principal environmental parameter which drove the overall variations of FA composition. Factor loadings for the inorganic nutrients were comparatively negligible. The main contribution in the seasonal variation of FA composition of the seston was given by negative interaction between water temperature and percentage of EPA in the seston. Аннотация: Specific growth rates (based on biomass increment in unit time) of Daphnia fed natural reservoir seston from a eutrophic Siberian reservoir were studied during four vegetation seasons in a laboratory flow-through system. Concentrations of particulate C, N, and P in reservoir seston <115 ?m were comparatively high, 1.9, 0.2, and 0.05 mg l-1, respectively; maximum C:P ratio was 259 mol:mol. According to conventional thresholds, concentrations of elements and their stoichiometry did not limit the growth rate of Daphnia. Eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) in seston significantly effected the growth rates at concentrations up to ?13 ?g l-1 (regression ANOVAR F-test value was 7.91), but not above this concentration. Thus, we consider this concentration of EPA in seston <115 ?m to be the limiting concentration of EPA for the growth of Daphnia (longispina group), i.e., below this concentration EPA was the best single predictor of the growth of Daphnia. Аннотация: The elemental and fatty acid composition of seston was studied for 3 years, from May to October, in a small Reservoir. Under comparatively low C:P ratio, multivariate canonical analysis revealed no straightforward simple correlations between phosphorus and single ?3 PUFA species, but complex significant interaction between elemental composition (stoichiometry) of seston and total sestonic ?3 PUFA as a whole. Since sestonic C, P and N were found to originate mostly from phytoplankton, the contents of particulate elements and PUFA were attributed to single species in periods of their pronounced dominance. Phytoplankton species of genera of Stephanodiscus, Peridinium, Gomphosphaeria, Planktothrix and Anabaena in periods of their pronounced dominance had relatively constant species-specific elemental and PUFA composition. Phytoplankton species significantly differed in their elemental and PUFA composition, as well as in ratios of C:N, N:P, PUFA:P and partly C:P that indicate food quality for zooplankton. Hence, there were no phytoplankton species of clearly high or low nutritional value. All of phytoplankters, or at least detritus, that originated from them, may meet specific elemental and biochemical requirements of specific groups of zooplankton. Dividing phytoplankton on basis of their elemental and biochemical composition, i.e., nutrition quality, into large taxa (cyanobacteria, diatoms, etc.) appeared to be too coarse for assessing nutritional value for zooplankton. Аннотация: Dependence of specific integral population growth rate or specific production rate of populations with random size and age structure on elemental and essential fatty acid composition of natural seston was studied in a laboratory flow-through system using a multiple regression. Under a comparatively high content of particulate phosphorus (P), the best single predictor of the growth appeared to be content of eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA, 20:5?3), as it was found earlier for somatic growth of even-aged populations of Daphnia. Regression equation with two independent variables, EPA and particulate nitrogen (N), gave a significantly better fit for the population growth as the dependent variable than the equation with EPA as the single independent variable. Interestingly, there was no significant correlation between N as the single variable and the growth. The essential ?3 fatty acid and N appeared to be complementary indicators of the food quality, which probably limited different constituents (reproductive and somatic) of the integral population growth under the high content of particulate P. Аннотация: 1. We studied variation in the composition of fatty acids in the seston of a small freshwater reservoir with changes in phytoplankton composition during four growth seasons. We focused on the dynamics of the ?3 fatty acids because of their potential importance for zooplankton nutrition. 2. Total diatoms were related to the 20:5?3 fatty acid (eicosapentaenoic, EPA) content in seston. Among two dominant diatom genera, Cyclotella was not associated with EPA content. In contrast, there was a significant correlation between Stephanodiscus and the percentage contribution and content of EPA throughout the study. Hence, freshwater diatoms can differ strongly in content of the essential EPA. 3. We considered abundant cyanobacteria as a potential source of 18:3?3 fatty acid (linolenic, ALA) to aquatic food webs. Among four dominant cyanobacteria species, two (Anabaena flos-aquae and Planktothrix agardhii) showed significant correlation with the ALA content of the seston, while the other two (Aphanizomenon flos-aquae and Microcystis aeruginosa) did not. 4. Dinophyta had a relatively high level of 22:6?3 (docosahexaenoic, DHA) for freshwater species and can be also a source of EPA to aquatic food webs. 5. Our results show that various species of diatoms as well as cyanobacteria can be of contrasting nutritional value for zooplankton because of their different content of the essential PUFAs. Diatoms, which are low in EPA, could not be considered as a valuable food, while some field populations of cyanobacteria might be valuable sources of essential ALA.

Аннотация: We studied fatty acid (FA) composition in samples from bodies and intestinal contents of the littoral amphipod Gammarus lacustris Sars, from the Bugach freshwater reservoir. Simultaneously, samples of seston and bottom sediments were also collected from the reservoir during early August. There were no differences in FA composition of gut contents, seston and sediments of pebbly bottom. Seston was the main food source of Gammarus but some FAs Gammarus got from sediments. The FA composition of G. lacustris and seston from the Bugach freshwater reservoir were compared with those of the animals from the saltwater Lake Shira (Siberia). While FA composition of the two Gammarus populations differed significantly, those of seston were practically similar: the composition of long-chain unsaturated fatty acids, 20:5?3, 22:6?3 and 20:4?6, were significantly higher in animals from saline Shira Lake, whereas 16:1 and 16:0 were higher in the freshwater populations of amphipods from the Bugach freshwater reservoir. Taking into account the relevant literature data, we hypothesise that this difference in C16 acid might be a distinguishing characteristic of FA composition of freshwater and saltwater crustaceans.

Аннотация: 1. We studied the composition of fatty acids (FAs) in the seston from two small freshwater reservoirs (Bugach and Lesnoi) with distinct periodicity of domination by cyanobacteria and eukaryotic algae during the growth season. 2. The diatoms in the both reservoirs were characterised by a high content of 14:0 and C16 unsaturated acids, whereas that of the essential FA 20:5?3 [eicosapentanoic acid (EPA)] was low. The correlation between this polyunsaturated FA (PUFA) and diatom biomass was not significant in either reservoir. The percentage of 20:5?3 in seston significantly correlated with the biomass of euglenophyta in Bugach and dinophyta in Lesnoi. Hence the diatoms, usually referred as a valuable food for zooplankton, were not an important source of the essential PUFA in these systems. 3. The dominant cyanobacteria in Bugach, and the green algae in Lesnoi, both contained the same marker acids: 18:3?3 and 18:2?6. Hence, a discrimination between these two phytoplanktonic groups on the basis of FA biomarkers may be difficult in some cases. 4. We found no significant correlation between the content of 20:5?3 in seston and the biomass of the dominant daphniids in either reservoir. This is contrary to expectations, based on the literature, that EPA is generally important. Rather, the biomass of the two dominant Daphnia species in Bugach correlated strongly with the content of 18:3?3 in the seston. The cyanobacteria were a probable source of this ?3 FA for Daphnia. We conclude that EPA is not always important for Daphnia populations although, in such cases, some other PUFA (e.g. 18:3?3) might be related to their growth.

Аннотация: We studied the gut contents of Gammarus lacustris from the littoral of Shira lake, a Siberian salt lake, by microscopic analysis in conjunction with measuring of fluorescence of chlorophyll and composition of fatty acids. Gammarus ingested primarily fresh seston, probably settled on the bottom. Additionally, the amphipods obtained essential polyunsaturated fatty acids of ?3 family by selectively consuming bottom sediment particles. A considerable part of the ingested seston comprised cells of Botryococcus sp., which passed the intestinal tract in living form and their photosynthetic activity increased. This viable gut passage was likely one of the causes of bloom of Botryococcus in the littoral. Unlike a number of literature data, there was no selective digestion of any fatty acid species, including polyunsaturated acids, in the intestinal tract.

Shunet, in Southern Siberia (Russia), was studied with the underwater video recording system and using vertical hauls. In both lakes, during summer stratification, Gammarus was distributed non-homogenously, with a stable peak in the metalimnion. The average depth of Gammarus population in the pelagic zone was significantly correlated with the depth of the thermocline. Gammarus abundances obtained using vertical plankton hauls with net were quite comparable with those obtained from video records. The peak abundance of Gammarus in the pelagic zone of the lakes observed with underwater video amounted up to 400 individuals m-2, while the peak animal densities in the metalimnion reached 50 ind. m-3. The data are compared with previously published abundances of Gammarus in the littoral of Lake Shira. Both littoral and pelagic can be equally important habitats for amphipods in meromictic lakes. The absence of fish in the pelagic zone, high oxygen concentration, low water temperature, increased seston concentration, elevated water density in the metalimnion and the anoxic hypolimnion can be the most probable combination of factors that are responsible for the peak of Gammarus in the metalimnion of these lakes. Аннотация: Food spectrum of microzooplancton in fresh-water ecological systems is lowly studied area. However, these organisms play very important role in transfer of substance and energy in water reservoirs. Traditional method of analysis of food in the microzooplancton does not makes it possible to determine real assimilation of organic substance. Therefore, biochemical methods have been developed which are based on analysis of compositions of fatty acids of organic substance. This leads to determining of the food assimilation. Fatty-acid compositions of lipids allow specialists to determine specific groups of organisms such as bacteria, microalgae etc. Data of the analysis are presented.

Аннотация: During two vegetation seasons (2004-2005), we compared feeding spectra of Arctodiaptomus salinus (Calanoida, Copepoda) populations inhabiting two neighboring salt lakes, Shira and Shunet, Khakasia, Russia, using fatty acid (FA) trophic markers. Sestonic FA composition in two lakes moderately differed, whereas levels of diatom FA markers were higher in Lake Shunet and of Cyanobacteria and green algae markers in Lake Shira. In general, markers in storage lipids-triacylglycerols (TAG) of A. salinus-reflected the differences in sestonic composition of the two lakes. Nevertheless, TAG fraction was also enriched by FA trophic markers of the minor components of seston, which were selectively ingested by the animals. In Lake Shira, A. salinus had significantly higher concentrations of bacterial FA markers in TAG. In Lake Shunet, TAG of A. salinus contained significantly higher relative amounts of 18:4?3, 18:5?3 and C22 polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA), which indicated marked contribution of cryptophytes or (and) flagellates into the diet. Laboratory experiments showed feeding on Cryptomonas and sulfur purple bacteria in Lake Shunet and ciliates and colonial picoplankton in both lakes, and generally confirmed the differences in FA trophic markers in A. salinus between the lakes. The two populations of A. salinus markedly differed in levels of essential long-chain PUFA, eicosapentaenoic (EPA) and docosahexaenoic (DHA) acids, although the levels of these FA in seston were quite similar between the two lakes. The higher levels of the essential ?3 PUFA in A. salinus in Lake Shunet may be an adaptive response of the animals to a vertical stratification of physico-chemical conditions and significantly higher salinity levels at the boundary of adjacent bottom layer in this lake. Аннотация: The data set obtained in 19 experiments aimed at studying the growth of Daphnia of the longispina group on natural seston of the Bugach water reservoir (Krasnoyarsk) was used to analyze the relationship between the parameters of somatic and generative growth of the studied animals and the amount and quality of food. Depending on the quality of the seston, two models of the development of Daphnia were proposed. It was demonstrated that, despite the existing positive correlation between somatic and generative growth, a noticeable fraction of the variations of the specific rate of generative production is determined by external factors of the environment, such as the relative content of N and ?-linolenic acid (N: C and ALA: C) in seston. Аннотация: In this work we experimentally estimated the capacities of the key components of the Yenisei River (Russia): particulate suspended matter (seston), diatom microalgae, and submerged macrophytes for accumulating Am-241 from water. In our experiments large particles of seston (>8 mu m), comparable in size with diatoms, took up most of americium from water. The accumulation of americium by isolated diatom algae (Asterionella formosa and Diatoma vulgare) was lower than by total seston. The concentration factors (CFs) of Am-241 for seston of the Yenisei River in our experiments were (2.8-6.9).10(5); for diatoms -(1.5-4.2)-10(4). The Us for aquatic plant Elodea canadensis were within the same order of magnitude as those for diatoms. Activity concentration and CFs of Am-241 were nearly the same in experiments under dark and light conditions. This is indicative of an energy independent mechanism of americium uptake from the water by diatoms and submerged macrophytes. (C) 2009 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Аннотация: Depths of thermocline and the redox zone, concentrations of dissolved and suspended carbon, and nitrogen and phosphorus in seston were measured in the pelagial of the saline meromictic Lake Shira (southern Siberia) in different years (2007-2011); the relationship of the values for those parameters with air-temperature variations was assessed. Positive correlations between both air temperatures in the previous year and the depth of the redox zone in winter and air temperature in April and the thermocline depth in summer were revealed. In the mixolimnion, the ratio of total nitrogen to total phosphorus almost always exceeded the Redfield ratio (16: 1); seston deficiency both in nitrogen and phosphorus was monitored in different seasons and at various depths. The amount of seston in the mixolimnion in summer almost doubled the amount of seston in winter and was directly related with the depth of the thermocline. In the monimolimnion, seston was rich in nitrogen and phosphorus. The amount of seston in the monimolimnion varied in different years and depended both on the air temperature in the previous year and the size of the zone.

Аннотация: We have studied the fatty acid (FA) contents and composition of cladocerans and copepods from warm and cold lakes. We have found no significant differences in FA percent levels and per carbon contents of cladocerans from warm and cold lakes or of copepods from warm and cold lakes. A discriminant analysis showed that all cladocerans differed from all copepods mainly due to the content of docosahexaenoic acid. Compared to cladocerans, copepods had significantly higher levels of all C22 polyunsaturated FA. Thus, we conclude that cladocerans and copepods in all environments had comparatively invariant taxon-specific compositions and contents of long-chain highly unsaturated fatty acids (HUFAs). According to HUFA content, all studied copepods can be regarded as a valuable food for fish.

While FA composition of the two Gammarus populations differed significantly, those of seston were practically similar: the composition of long-chain unsaturated fatty acids, 20:5omega3, 22:6omega3 and 20:4omega6, were significantly higher in animals from saline Shira Lake, whereas 16:1 and 16:0 were higher in the freshwater populations of amphipods from the Bugach freshwater reservoir. Taking into account the relevant literature data, we hypothesise that this difference in C16 acid might be a distinguishing characteristic of FA composition of freshwater and saltwater crustaceans.
