Аннотация: The main objective of a life support system for space missions is to supply a crew with food, water and oxygen, and to eliminate their wastes. The ultimate goal is to achieve the highest degree of closure of the system using controlled processes offering a high level of reliability and flexibility. Enhancement of closure of a biological life support system (BLSS) that includes plants relies on increased regeneration of plant waste, and utilization of solid and liquid human wastes. Clearly, the robustness of a BLSS subjected to stress will be substantially determined by the robustness of the plant components of the phototrophic unit. The aim of the present work was to estimate the heat resistance of two plants (wheat and lettuce) grown on human wastes. Human exometabolites mineralized by hydrogen peroxide in an electromagnetic field were used to make a nutrient solution for the plants. We looked for a possible increase in the heat tolerance of the wheat plants using changes in photosynthetically active radiation (PAR) intensity during heat stress. At age 15 days, plants were subjected to a rise in air temperature (from 23 В± 1 В°C to 44 В± 1 В°) under different PAR intensities for 4 h. The status of the photosynthetic apparatus of the plants was assessed by external 2 gas exchange and fluorescence measurements. The increased irradiance of the plants during the high temperature period demonstrated its protective action for both the photosynthetic apparatus of the leaves and subsequent plant growth and development. The productivity of the plants subjected to temperature changes at 250 W m-2 of PAR did not differ from that of controls, whereas the productivity of the plants subjected to the same heat stress but in darkness was halved. The heat resistance of the reproductive organs of 25-day-old plants was significantly lower than that of 15-day-old plants subjected to similar light and temperature conditions.

Аннотация: The usage of chlorophyll fluorescence induction (CFI) for estimating various types of plant resistance (primary, general, initial, adaptive) to stress factors is reviewed. The necessity of ontogenetic approach (considering the age-specific properties of the photosynthetic apparatus) in determining general and adaptive resistance of plants to prolonged action of stress factors by the CFI method is argued. In the plant Cucumbis sativus L., the possibility is shown of using age-specific qualitative and quantitative traits of leaf CFI (changes in the shape of chlorophyll fluorescence induction curves and in the dynamics of CFI parameters in the course of leaf ontogeny) for comparative study of differences between fully active and stressed plants. Possible criteria are suggested for estimating the effect of outer stress factors by the presence or absence of a steady-state phase in the dynamics of CFI parameters during leaf ontogeny. It is also suggested to use the duration of the steady-state phase following the termination of leaf growth (estimated by the dynamics of the slow phase of CFI as the ratio of fluorescence intensity at the peak P and the steady-state fluorescence intensity, FP/FS, or as the viability index Rfd) and the variability of CFI parameters during this period as qualitative estimates of plant resistance to prolonged action of stress factors.

Leaf age -- Photosystems 1 and 2 -- Radiation colour -- Specific leaf growth rate
Аннотация: The review deals with objective reasons that limit the use of chlorophyll fluorescence induction kinetics (Chl FIK) method in plant ecology. Based on the ontogenetic approach (analysis and comparison of the dynamics of the Chl fluorescence ratio Fp/Fs and physiological characteristics of plant leaves in ontogeny) possible criteria for the estimation of general plant resistance of photosynthetic apparatus (PSA) to prolonged stress affects are proposed. One of these criteria is the presence or absence of a steady-state phase in the dynamics of Chl fluorescence ratio Fp/Fs (or Rfd) of plant leaves after they stop growing. We also propose to use the duration of the steady-state phase and variability of Chl fluorescence ratios Rfd and Fp/Fs in this period for quantitative assessment of plant PSA resistance to prolonged stress during plant leaf ontogeny.

Chlorophyll fluorescence -- Leaf -- Ontogeny -- Stress -- Cucumis sativus
Аннотация: The causes that limit the applicability of the chlorophyll fluorescence induction method to evaluating the state of the photosynthetic apparatus of leaves under long-term stress were analyzed. It was substantiated that it is necessary to use an ontogenetic approach, which consists in more accurately taking into account the age state of the plant leaves studied. Comparison of the calendar and ontogenetic methods for determining the leaf age by the example of cucumber plant under controlled conditions revealed significant differences in the results of evaluating the photosynthetic apparatus of plant leaves by the chlorophyll fluorescence induction method in two variants with contrasting illumination conditions (in white light at 400-700 nm and in stressful red light at 600-700 nm). It was shown that, under long-term stress, the unequivocal interpretation of the chlorophyll fluorescence induction parameters in evaluating the photosynthetic apparatus of plants depends significantly on the choice of the ontogeny period of the leaves of plants being compared and on the accuracy of determining their age. Аннотация: The effect of elevated temperatures of 35 and 45В°C (at the intensities of photosynthetically active radiation 322, 690 and 1104 ?mol-m-2-s-1) on the photosynthesis, respiration, and qualitative and quantitative composition of the volatiles emitted by wheat (Triticum aestuvi L., cultivar 232) crops was investigated in growth chambers. Identification and quantification of more than 20 volatile compounds (terpenoids - ?-pinene, ?3 carene, limonene, benzene, ?-and transcaryophyllene, ?- and ?-terpinene, their derivatives, aromatic hydrocarbons, etc.) were conducted by gas chromatograph/mass spectrometry. Under light intensity of 1104 ?mol-m-2-s-1, heat resistance of photosynthesis and respiration increased at 35В°C and decreased at 45В°C. The action of elevated temperatures brought about variations in the rate and direction of the synthesis of volatile metabolites. The emission of volatile compounds was the greatest under a reduced irradiation of 322 ?mol-m-2-s-1 and the smallest under 1104 ?mol-m-2-s-1 at 35В°C. During the repair period, the contents and proportions of volatile compounds were different from their initial values, too. The degree of disruption and the following recovery of the functional state depended on the light intensity during the exposure to elevated temperatures. The investigation of the atmosphere of the growth chamber without plants has revaled the substances that were definitely technogenic in origin: tetramethylurea, dimethylsulfide, dibutylsulfide, dibutylphthalate, and a number of components of furan and silane nature. Аннотация: The effects of elevated temperature (35 and 45В°C) on photosynthesis, respiration, and both the qualitative and quantitative compositions of volatile emissions (VE) of wheat (Triticum aestuvum L. cultivar 232) cenoses at light intensities of 70, 150, or 240 W/m2 of photosynthetically available radiation (PAR) were studied. At a PAR of 240 W/m2, the thermal stabilities of photosynthesis and respiration increased at 35В°C and decreased at 45В°C. Elevated temperatures nonuniformly changed the rates and direction of VE syntheses. In this process, the highest increase in VE evolution was observed at 70 W/m2; the lowest, at 240 W/m2 and 35В°C. In addition, the concentrations and composition of VE during the repair period differed from the initial values.

Аннотация: The current lithospheric geodynamics and tectonophysics in the Baikal rift are discussed in terms of a nonlinear oscillator with dissipation. The nonlinear oscillator model is applicable to the area because stress change shows up as quasi-periodic inharmonic oscillations at rifting attractor structures (RAS). The model is consistent with the space-time patterns of regional seismicity in which coupled large earthquakes, proximal in time but distant in space, may be a response to bifurcations in nonlinear resonance hysteresis in a system of three oscillators corresponding to the rifting attractors. The space-time distribution of coupled MLHВ >В 5.5 events has been stable for the period of instrumental seismicity, with the largest events occurring in pairs, one shortly after another, on two ends of the rift system and with couples of smaller events in the central part of the rift. The event couples appear as peaks of earthquake 'migration' rate with an approximately decadal periodicity. Thus the energy accumulated at RAS is released in coupled large events by the mechanism of nonlinear oscillators with dissipation. The new knowledge, with special focus on space-time rifting attractors and bifurcations in a system of nonlinear resonance hysteresis, may be of theoretical and practical value for earthquake prediction issues. Extrapolation of the results into the nearest future indicates the probability of such a bifurcation in the region, i.e., there is growing risk of a pending MВ ?В 7 coupled event to happen within a few years. Аннотация: The localization of the key photoreductive and oxidative processes and some stress-protective reactions within leaves of mesophytic C3 plants were investigated. The role of light in determining the profile of Rubisco, glutamate oxaloacetate transaminase, catalase, fumarase, and cytochrome-c-oxidase across spinach leaves was examined by exposing leaves to illumination on either the adaxial or abaxial leaf surfaces. Oxygen evolution in fresh paradermal leaf sections and CO2 gas exchange in whole leaves under adaxial or abaxial illumination was also examined. The results showed that the palisade mesophyll is responsible for the midday depression of photosynthesis in spinach leaves. The photosynthetic apparatus was more sensitive to the light environment than the respiratory apparatus. Additionally, examination of the paradermal leaf sections by optical microscopy allowed us to describe two new types of parenchyma in spinach-pirum mesophyll and pillow spongy mesophyll. A hypothesis that oxaloacetate may protect the upper leaf tissue from the destructive influence of active oxygen is presented. The application of mathematical modeling shows that the pattern of enzymatic distribution across leaves abides by the principle of maximal ecological utility. Light regulation of carbon metabolism across leaves is discussed. В© 2010 Springer-Verlag.

Аннотация: Optical remote methods were used for experimental determination of values of the spectral brightness coefficients (SBC) of tomato plants, grown under artificial lighting, throughout the growth period. Based on simple criteria of the ratios of the SEC it was demonstrated that it is possible to determine the physiological stress state and biological productivity of plants. The possibility of early diagnosis of the productivity of tomato plants was demonstrated.

Аннотация: The use of mineralized human wastes as a basis for nutrient solutions will increase the degree of material closure of bio-technical human life support systems. As stress tolerance of plants is determined, among other factors, by the conditions under which they have been grown before exposure to a stressor, the purpose of the study is to investigate the level of tolerance of chufa (Cyperus esculentus L.) plant communities grown in solutions based on mineralized human wastes to a damaging air temperature, 45 °C. Experiments were performed with 30-day-old chufa plant communities grown hydroponically, on expanded clay aggregate, under artificial light, at 690 ?mol m-2 s-1 PAR and at a temperature of 25 °C. Plants were grown in Knop's solution and solutions based on human wastes mineralized according to Yu.A. Kudenko's method, which contained nitrogen either as ammonium and urea or as nitrates. The heat shock treatment lasted 20 h at 690 and 1150 ?mol m -2 s-1 PAR. Chufa heat tolerance was evaluated based on parameters of CO2 gas exchange, the state of its photosynthetic apparatus (PSA), and intensity of peroxidation of leaf lipids. Chufa plants grown in the solutions based on mineralized human wastes that contained ammonium and urea had lower heat tolerance than plants grown in standard mineral solutions. Heat tolerance of the plants grown in the solutions based on mineralized human wastes that mainly contained nitrate nitrogen was insignificantly different from the heat tolerance of the plants grown in standard mineral solutions. A PAR intensity increase from 690 ?mol m -2 s-1 to 1150 ?mol m-2 s-1 enhanced heat tolerance of chufa plant communities, irrespective of the conditions of mineral nutrition under which they had been grown. © 2014 COSPAR. Аннотация: Effects of Americium-241 (241Am), alpha-emitting radionuclide of high specific radioactivity, and tritium (3H), beta-emitting radionuclide, on luminous bacteria Photobacterium phosphoreum were compared. Bioluminescence intensity served as a marker of bacterial physiological activity. Three successive stages in the bioluminescence response to 241Am and 3H were found under conditions of lowdose irradiation: (1) absence of effects, (2) activation, and (3) inhibition. They were interpreted in terms of bacterial response to stressfactor as stress recognition, adaptive response/syndrome, and suppression of physiological function (i.e. radiation toxicity). Times of bioluminescence activation (TBA) and inhibition (TBI) were suggested as parameters to characterize hormesis and toxic stages in a course of chronic low-dose irradiation of the microorganisms. Values of TBA and TBI of 241Am were shorter than those of 3H, revealing higher impact of alpha-irradiation (as compared to beta-irradiation) under comparable radiation doses. Increases of peroxide concentration and NADH oxidation rates in 241Am aquatic solutions were demonstrated; these were not found in tritiated water. The results reveal a biological role of reactive oxygen species generated in water solutions as secondary products of the radioactive decay. The study provides a scientific basis for elaboration of bioluminescence-based assay to monitor radiotoxicity of alpha- and beta-emitting radionuclides in aquatic solutions. © 2014 Versita Warsaw and Springer-Verlag Wien.

Аннотация: The effects of elevated temperature (35 and 45degreesC) on photosynthesis, respiration, and both the qualitative and quantitative compositions of volatile emissions (VE) of wheat (Triticum aestuvum L. cultivar 232) cenoses at light intensities of 70, 150, or 240 W/m(2) of photosynthetically available radiation (PAR) were studied. At a PAR of 240 W/m(2), the thermal stabilities of photosynthesis and respiration increased at 35degreesC and decreased at 45degreesC. Elevated temperatures nonuniformly changed the rates and direction of VE syntheses. In this process, the highest increase in VE evolution was observed at 70 W/m(2) and 35degreesC; the lowest, at 240 W/m(2). In addition, the concentrations and composition of VE during the repair period differed from the initial values.
