Аннотация: This study is devoted to investigating the content of uranium isotopes in water of the Yenisei River and its tributaries within the territories affected by the operation of Rosatom plants (mining chemical combine, and electrochemical plant). Long-term monitoring of the 238U content by mass spectrometry carried out in two institutes of the Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences first revealed the multiple excess of 238U over the background content in different areas of the Yenisei River basin, such as the region of the Yenisei River near the effluents of the mining and chemical combine (MCC), and the territories of the Bol'shaya Tel' and Kan rivers. In these regions, the 238U content in water reaches 2.1-4.0 ?g/l, which exceeds its content upstream from the MCC (0.3-0.6 ?g/l) by almost an order of magnitude. The studies of the isotopic composition of uranium in water samples, which were carried out at the Institute of Inorganic Chemistry, Siberian Branch, Russian Academy of Sciences, showed the presence of a technogenic isotope of uranium 236U in the samples from the Bolshaya Tel' River and revealed the deviation of the isotope ratio 238U/ 235U (167 В± 3 and 177 В± 3) from the equilibrium natural ratio ( 238U/ 235U = 138). These facts attest to the technogenic origin of part of the uranium in water of the Bol'shaya Tel' River connected with the activity of MCC. The excess uranium content in the Kan River requires additional studies to ascertain the fraction of uranium of technogenic origin connected with the activity of the electrochemical plant (ECP) (Fig. 1, Table 4). Аннотация: The spatio-temporal organization of the bacterial community inhabiting the chemocline of the stratified meromictic Lake Shunet (Khakassia, Russia) was investigated from May to September 2005 by means of microscopy, analysis of photosynthetic pigments, and PCR-DGGE with subsequent 16S rDNA analysis. The samples were collected with a multisyringe stratification sampler, sampling being performed every 5 cm. It was demonstrated that, during the period of investigation, there were no large changes in the bacterial community of the chlemocline, at least among the detected forms. During the whole period of study, purple sulfur bacteria related to Lamprocystis purpurea (Chromatiaceae) were predominant in the chemocline. Beneath the layer of purple bacteria, green sulfur bacteria were revealed that were phylogenetically distant from strain ShNPel02, which was previously isolated from this lake. Development of phytoflagellates of the genus Cryptomonas was observed in the upper zone of the chemocline. In the chemocline of Lake Shunet, the numbers of picoplankton cyanobacteria of the genus Synechococcus increased from May to September. It was demonstrated that the application of universal bacterial primers for DGGE resulted in the same qualitative distributional pattern of predominant species as microscopic studies. Аннотация: A new method is proposed to evaluate the interaction coefficients in microbial communities interacting due to physical-chemical environmental factors. This method differs from the classical one suggested by E.P.Odum. Redefinition of the interaction coefficients allows the evaluation of the experimental (actual) and theoretical values of the coefficients for the hypothetical interaction layout. The interaction layout is considered to be a set of factors, the values of their transformation ratios and the form of dependence of a population's specific growth rate on these factors. A comparison of theoretical and experimental values of interaction coefficients enables us to assess the adequacy of the hypothetical interaction scheme in the microbial communities. The aim of the work is to test the suggested method on a natural algal-bacterial community of Shira Lake (Khakasia, Russia), which has been the object of detailed and concerted limnological studies and for which detailed data are available. Feedback coefficients of phyto- and bacterioplankton and the coefficients of influence of phytoplankton on bacterioplankton have been defined. Dominance of negative experimental IC values has been experimentally shown, which is indicative of the negative feedback in bacterio- and phytoplankton links of Shira Lake and of negative interpopulation (phytoplankton on bacterioplankton) interactions. The considerable differences observed between the experimental and theoretical coefficients indicates inadequacy of the assumed interaction layout of the community under study. Further investigations are needed to provide a precise sketch of the interactions.

Аннотация: Microbial polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHAs), because of their well studied complex physiology and commercial potential, are vehicles for carbon and potential storage reduction for many microbial species. Even with the wealth of studies about microbial PHAs in the scientific literature, polymer accumulation and degradation are still not comprehensively understood. Poly(3-hydroxybutyrate) (P3HB) granule formation and polymer mobility were studied here in the bacterium Ralstonia eutropha strain B5786 in autotrophic cultures. Electron microscopy studies revealed decreasing cell size concomitant with enlargement of size and number of intracellular granules, and inhibition of cell division during intracellular polymer production. Activities of key P3HB biosynthetic enzymes demonstrated correlations with each other during polymer accumulation, suggesting an intricately regulated P3HB cycle in autotrophically grown R. eutropha cells. Аннотация: The kinetics of polyhydroxyalkanoate (PHA) degradation in natural environment in two water reservoirs having various ecological characteristics was studied. It was shown that biodegradation of polymer essentially depends on the environment temperature and inorganic composition of water. The processes of polymer degradation under aerobic and anaerobic conditions were compared. The polymer degradation was slower under anaerobic conditions. Copyright В© 2008 WILEY-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. Аннотация: Samples of olyhydroxyalkanoates (PHAs), polyhydroxybutyrate (PHB) and copolymers poly(hydroxybutyrate-co-hydroxyvalerate) (PHBV) with 4 and 18 mol% hydroxyvalerate, synthesized by the bacteria Ralstonia eutropha B5786, were investigated. PHA films in contact with blood did not activate the hemostasis system at the level of cell response, but they did activate the coagulation system and the complement reaction. To detect biologically-active components in the PHAs, a detailed analysis of the composition of the polymers was conducted. Gas chromatography-mass spectrometry revealed long-chain fatty acids (FAs) in the tested PHAs. Their total concentration in the polymer ranged from tenths of mol% to 2-3 mol%, depending on the purification method. C16:0 constituted the largest proportion, up to 70%. Of the long-chain hydroxy acids, only ?-OH-C14:0 was detected and it did not exceed 0.06 mol%. The analysis of the hemocompatibility properties of the PHAs purified by a specialized procedure, including the quantitative and morphological estimation of platelets adherent to the surface of polymer films, the plasma recalcification time and complement activation studies, indicated that PHB and PHBV can be used in contact with blood. It has been found out that the lipopolysaccharides of bacteria producing PHAs, which contain mostly long-chain hydroxy acids, can be the factor activating the hemostasis systems. Thus, the technology of PHA purification must satisfy rather stringent specific requirements.

Chlorophyll fluorescence -- Gross primary production -- Periphytic microalgae
Аннотация: Periphyton (epilithon) gross primary production (GPP) was estimated using the DCMU-fluorescence method in the Yenisei River. In the unshaded littoral zone, chlorophyll a concentration (Chl a) and GPP value varied from 0.83 to 973.74 mg m-2and 2-304,425 O2 m-2 day -1 (0.64-95 133 mg C m-2 day-1), respectively. Positive significant correlation (r=0.8) between daily GPP and periphyton Chl a was found. Average ratio GPP:Chl a for periphyton was 36.36 mg C mg Chl a m -2 day-1. The obtained GPP values for the Yenisei River have a high significant correlation with values predicted by a conventional empirical model for stream periphyton. We concluded that the DCMU-fluorescence method can be successfully used for measuring of gross primary production of stream phytoperiphyton at least as another useful tool for such studies.     Metal Concentrations in the Ecosystem and Around Recreational and Fish-Breeding Pond Bugach / M. I. Gladyshev [et al.] // Water Resources. - 2001. - Vol. 28, Is. 3. - P288-296, DOI 10.1023/A:1010400807660 . - ISSN 0097-8078
Аннотация: Data of two field studies were used to analyze the concentrations of Na, K, Ca, Mg, Fe, Mn, Zn, Cu, Al, Cr, Ni, Cd, and Pb in the water, bottom deposits, zoobenthos, fish, and macrophytes of the Pond Bugach and in the soils near the pond. It was established that the majority of metals in the soils and bottom deposits correlate and their concentrations are governed by the universal geochemical factors of the region. The heavy metals were recognized that originate from anthropogenic sources and their concentrations were found to exceed the maximum admissible values for different components of the ecosystem. Five types of heavy metals migration were recognized in the soil-bottom deposits-zoobenthos-fish chain and in macrophytes. Statistically significant difference was found to exist between the concentrations of some heavy metals in the muscles of fish species with different food types (crucian carp and perch) as well as between the correlations of metals. The recorded concentrations were compared with the concentrations of metals measured in the last decade in other limnetic ecosystems in Siberia, Europe, North America, and China.

    Ontogenetic approach in fluorescence studies of the photosynthetic apparatus of plants under stress / T. V. Nesterenko, A. A. Tikhomirov // Biophysics. - 2005. - Vol. 50, Is. 2. - P314-319 . - ISSN 0006-3509

Chlorophyll fluorescence -- Leaf -- Ontogeny -- Stress -- Cucumis sativus
Аннотация: The causes that limit the applicability of the chlorophyll fluorescence induction method to evaluating the state of the photosynthetic apparatus of leaves under long-term stress were analyzed. It was substantiated that it is necessary to use an ontogenetic approach, which consists in more accurately taking into account the age state of the plant leaves studied. Comparison of the calendar and ontogenetic methods for determining the leaf age by the example of cucumber plant under controlled conditions revealed significant differences in the results of evaluating the photosynthetic apparatus of plant leaves by the chlorophyll fluorescence induction method in two variants with contrasting illumination conditions (in white light at 400-700 nm and in stressful red light at 600-700 nm). It was shown that, under long-term stress, the unequivocal interpretation of the chlorophyll fluorescence induction parameters in evaluating the photosynthetic apparatus of plants depends significantly on the choice of the ontogeny period of the leaves of plants being compared and on the accuracy of determining their age. Carbon dioxide -- Closed ecological system
Аннотация: The soil-like substrate (SLS), which is a potential candidate for employment in closed ecological systems, has been tested. CO2 exchange, composition and numbers of soil microflora have been examined in .wheat-SLS. system. The results produced have been compared to analogous characteristics of .wheat-neutral substrate. system. A hydroponic method was used under wheat growing on the neutral substrate (expanded clay aggregate). Plants for both studies were grown in closed environment from seed to physiological maturity. In the .wheat-SLS. system, the net photosynthetic rate of canopy was positive in the course of 6.55 days after planting. The net photosynthetic rate of canopy in .wheat-neutral substrate. system was positive in the entire course of vegetation. According to calculations in the course of vegetation, photosynthesis has withdrawn 3.28 kg m-2 CO2 from the .wheat-SLS. system and 3.40 kg m-2 CO2 from the .wheat-neutral substrate. system. On the SLS dominant among bacteria were the spore-forming bacteria from Bacillus genus, among fungi . from Trichoderma genus. In the hydroponic cultivation on neutral substrate dominant were bacteria from Pseudomonas genus, most commonly found fungi were species from Fusarium and Botrytis genera.

Аннотация: An experimental model of a biological life support system was used to evaluate qualitative and quantitative parameters of the internal mass exchange. The photosynthesizing unit included the higher plant component (wheat and radish), and the heterotrophic unit consisted of a soil-like substrate, California worms, mushrooms and microbial microflora. The gas mass exchange involved evolution of oxygen by the photosynthesizing component and its uptake by the heterotroph component along with the formation and maintaining of the SLS structure, growth of mushrooms and California worms, human respiration, and some other processes. Human presence in the system in the form of "virtual human" that at regular intervals took part in the respirative gas exchange during the experiment. Experimental data demonstrated good oxygen/carbon dioxide balance, and the closure of the cycles of these gases was almost complete. The water cycle was nearly 100% closed. The main components in the water mass exchange were transpiration water and the watering solution with mineral elements. Human consumption of the edible plant biomass (grains and roots) was simulated by processing these products by a unique physicochemical method of oxidizing them to inorganic mineral compounds, which were then returned into the system and fully assimilated by the plants. The oxidation was achieved by "wet combustion" of organic biomass, using hydrogen peroxide following a special procedure, which does not require high temperature and pressure. Hydrogen peroxide is produced from the water inside the system. The closure of the cycle was estimated for individual elements and compounds. Stoichiometric proportions are given for the main components included in the experimental model of the system. Approaches to the mathematical modeling of the cycling processes are discussed, using the data of the experimental model. Nitrogen, as a representative of biogenic elements, shows an almost 100% closure of the cycle inside the system. The proposed experimental model of a biological system is discussed as a candidate for potential application in the investigations aimed at creating ecosystems with largely closed cycles of the internal mass exchange. The formation and maintenance of sustainable cycling of vitally important chemical elements and compounds in biological life support systems (BLSS) is an extremely pressing problem. To attain the stable functioning of biological life support systems (BLSS) and to maintain a high degree of closure of material cycles in them, it is essential to understand the character of mass exchange processes and stoichiometric proportions of the initial and synthesized components of the system. Аннотация: Polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA) of ?3 family are of crucial physiological importance for the most animals and they are an essential and deficient component of human nutrition. These compounds are most effectively synthesized by some groups of algae, hence, aquatic ecosystems are considered to be the main source of these PUFA for human nutrition. Factors controlling the content and distribution of ?3 PUFA in freshwater organisms of basic trophic levels and determined PUFA final production in freshwater ecosystems are considered in the review. PUFA biosynthesis is known to be tightly related to basic fatty acid metabolic pathways. Hence, fatty composition and the PUFA content of major freshwater hydrobiont groups, including bacteria, algae, invertebrates and vertebrates, and environmental and population age effects are described. The peculiarities of PUFA transfer between organisms of various trophic levels are discussed. The essential ?3 PUFA is one of the important parameter of food quality of aquatic consumers and they can determine the rate of energy and matter transfer between producers and primary consumers and, as a result, in a whole freshwater food chain. Analysis of PUFA content and its regulation in biomass of various fish populations indicates that freshwater ecosystems are of the same value in respect of PUFA sources as marine ecosystems. Despite the great practical importance, the studies focused on production and whole pools of ?3 PUFA in different freshwater ecosystems are still scarce and need to be continued.

    Ecological biophysics and its role in study of aquatic ecosystems / I. I. Gitel'zon [et al.] // Biophysics. - 1993. - Vol. 38, Is. 6. - P1099-1108 . - ISSN 0006-3509
Аннотация: A concept is formulated on ecological and biophysics as a scientific discipline which studies physical processes and phenomena resulting from the functioning of live supra-organism systems. Three main directions of ecological biophysics are defined: creation of methods of monitoring ecosystems on the basis of probing biophysical fields (fields of bioluminescence and fluorescence); mathematical and physical modelling; and study of the role of live organisms in hydrophysical processes on the ecosystem scale. Examples are given of the realization of the ecologo-biophysical approach in research into the ecosystems of the world ocean, Lake Baikal and the Dnieper and Yenisei reservoirs. В© 1994.

Аннотация: For systematic human Mars exploration, meeting crew safety requirements, it seems perspective to assemble into a spacecraft: an electrical rocket, a well-shielded long-term life support system, and a manipulator-robots operating in combined "presence effect" and "master-slave" mode. The electrical spacecraft would carry humans to the orbit of Mars, providing short distance (and low signal time delay) between operator and robot-manipulators, which are landed on the surface of the planet. Long-term hybrid biological and physical/chemical LSS could provide environment supporting human health and well being. Robot-manipulators operating in "presence effect" and "master-slave" mode exclude necessity of human landing on Martian surface decreasing the level of risk for crew. Since crewmen would not have direct contact with the Martian environment then the problem of mutual biological protection is essentially reduced. Lightweight robot-manipulators, without heavy life support systems and without the necessity of returning to the mother vessel, could be sent as scouts to different places on the planet surface, scanning the most interesting for exobiological research site. Some approximate estimations of electric spacecraft, long-term hybrid LSS, radiation protection and mission parameters are conducted and discussed. В© 2002 COSPAR. Published by Elsevier Science Ltd. Аннотация: Model experiments in phytotrons have shown that urea is able to cover 70% of the demand in nitrogen of the conveyer cultivated wheat. At the same time wheat plants can directly utilize human liquid wastes. In this article by human liquid wastes the authors mean human urine only. In a long-term experiment on "man-higher plants" system with two crewmen, plants covered 63 m2, with wheat planted to - 39.6 m2. For 103 days, complete human urine (total amount - 210.7 1) wassupplied into the nutrient solution for wheat. In a month and a half NaCl supply into the nutrient solution stabilized at 0.9-1.65 g/l. This salination had no marked effect on wheat production. The experiment revealed the realistic feasibility to directly involve liquid wastes into the biological turnover of the life support system. The closure of the system, in terms of water, increased by 15.7% and the supply of nutrients for wheat plants into the system was decreased. Closedness of biological turnover of matter in a man-made "man - higher plants" ecological system might involve, among other processes, direct utilization of human liquid wastes by plants. The amount of urine comprises 15-20% of the total amount of water cycling within the system including water as part of food, household, hygiene and potable water necessary for man. What is more, it they contains most nitrogen-bearing compounds emitted by man, almost all of the NaCl and some other substances involved in the biological turnover. Human liquid wastes can be utilized either by preliminary physical-chemical treatment (evaporating or freezing out the water, finally oxidizing the organic matter, isolating the mineral components required for plants, etc.) and further involvement of the obtained products or by direct application into the nutrient solution for plants. The challenge of direct utilization is that plants have no need of Na+ and Cl-, and also the organic forms of nitrogen emitted by man cannot fully meet the demand of plants forthis element. Besides, hygienic and/or psychological reasons make it desirable to avoid direct use of liquid wastes in the nutrient solutions that would have direct contact with edible part of plants (tubers, roots, bulbs). Feasibility of direct utilization of liquid wastes by plants in a closed "man - higher plants" ecosystem has been experimentally studied on wheat - grain culture as a model plant with the edible part in the form of seeds spatially dissociated with the nutrient medium. The wheat covered 60-65% of the area under higher plants. The studies have been carried out in "Bios-3"experimental facility described in detail elsewhere (Lisovsky, 1979; Gitelson et al., 1989). Аннотация: Artificial, closed ecosystems are potentially useful tools with which to explore ecosystem interactions, allowing investigations of the biology, physiology and biophysics of complex communities. They can also be used to evaluate the long-term effects of environmental constituents that are usually present at very low concentrations. The introduction of humans into such systems extends their usefulness even further, allowing the study of the influence of the environment on people, and the effects of people on the environment. Because of the great potential of such systems in adding to human knowledge, and their considerable expense, it is appropriate that such activities be international studies. The Institute of Biophysics of the Russian Academy of Sciences (Siberian Branch) has established, The International Research Center for Closed Ecosystems (Biospherics). It is located in Central Siberia near Krasnoyarsk on the Yenissei river, and is open to all interested investigators. В© Copyright 1994 Society of Automotive Engineers, Inc.

Аннотация: The life support systems (LSS) for long-term missions are to use cycling-recycling systems, including biological recycling. Higher plants are the traditional regenerator of air and producer of food. They should be used in many successive generations of their reproduction in LSS. Studies of influence of microbial associations on germination of wheat seeds and on growth of seedlings under impact of heavy metals are necessary because of migration of heavy metals in LSS. Microbial associations are able to stimulate growth of plants, to protect them from pathogenic organisms and from toxicity of heavy metal salts. The goal of this work was to investigate effect of microbial associations on the germination of wheat seeds and on the growth of seedlings under impact of different concentrations of ZnSO4. The results of investigations showed that:(1)Zinc salt had an adverse effect on germination of wheat seeds, beginning with concentrations of 8 MPC (Maximum Permissible Concentration) and higher.(2)Microbial associations (concentrations -104 to 107 cells/ml) were able to decrease (partly or completely) the adverse effect of ZnSO4 on germination of wheat seeds.(3)Concentrations (104-107 cells/ml) of microbial associations were able to decrease partly the adverse effect of zinc salts (intervals: from 1 to 32 MPS{cyrillic}) on the growth and development of wheat plantlets during heterotrophic phase.(4)The root system of plants was more sensitive to the adverse effect of ZnSO4 than shoots of plants. Biospherics -- Biotic turnover -- Limiting substance -- Natural and artificial ecosystems -- Biogeochemistry -- Ecosystems -- Mathematical models -- Artificial ecosystems -- Energy fluxes -- Biospherics
Аннотация: The main unifying feature of natural and artificial ecosystems is their biotic turnover (cycling) of substances which is induced with energy fluxes. A new integrating scientific discipline - Biospherics - studies biotic cycles (both in experiments and in mathematical models) of different degree of closure and complexity. By its origin, Biospherics is to be connected with extensive studies of Biosphere by Russian academician Vladimir Vernadsky. He developed and used "empirical generalizations" based on innumerous observations, comparisons and reflections. His "bio-geo-chemical principles" of Biosphere and ecosystems development have more qualitative than quantitative nature. Quantitative criteria to evaluate the efficiency of natural and artificial ecosystems are to take into account energy fluxes and their use in ecosystems of different types. At least, three of them are of value for estimation of natural and artificial ecosystems' functional activities. Energy principle of extensive development (EPED), energy principle of intensive development (EPID) and main universal (generalized) criterion (MUC). The last criterion (Principle) characterizes the specific cycling rate of limiting chemical elements in multi-organism systems, developing under external energy fluxes. Its value can be a quantitative measure of effectiveness for every ecosystem functioning, including our global Biosphere. Different examples of these (above-mentioned) integrated criteria actions are presented and analyzed in the paper. В© 2007 COSPAR.

Аннотация: The anthropogenic impact on the Earth's ecosystems are leading to dramatic changes in ecosystem functioning and even to destruction of them. System analysis and the use of heuristic modeling can be an effective means to determine the main biological interactions and key factors that are of high importance for understanding the development of ecosystems. Cycling of limiting substances, induced by the external free energy flux, and trophic links interaction is the basis of the mathematical modeling studies presented in this paper. Mathematical models describe the dynamics of simplified ecosystems having different characteristics: 1) different degrees of biotic turnover closure (from open to completely closed); 2) different numbers of trophic links (including both "topdown", "bottom-up" regulation types); 3) different intensities of input - output flows of the limiting nutrient and its total amount in the system. Adaptive values of the changes of lower hierarchical levels (populational, trophic chain level) are to be estimated by integrity indices for total system functioning (e.g. NPP, total photosynthesis). The approach developed can be used for evaluating the contributions of lower hierarchical levels to the functioning of the higher hierarchical levels of the system. This approach may have value for determining biomanipulation management and their assessment. В© 2003 COSPAR. Published by Elsevier Science Ltd. All rights reserved.
